hurt someone else. she says she's also coping with the loss and gathering her strength knowing that she has to be strong for her children. the family will hold a candlelight vigil at the sight of the shooting. the chief of police in oakland are promising that his officers are going all out to stop criminals like those who attacked the powell family. >> i want to give a message, one of the message i wanted to give is that the oakland police department is coming. >> reporter: chief anthony bats told us officers just arrested 25 people for parol violations. he called them some of the most problematic people in the city. he vowed to use 30 newly police officers to increase patrol. as customerred filed out of a cafe with their hands on the

air. the customers didn't want to go on camera but told ktvu they knew something wasn't right when a man quickly walked in. took off his jacket and bought an ice tea. they described the man as african american and all the customers as asian. >> a lot of times we see when suspects are fleeing from us, they will run into and try to blend in with the crowd. now we have all these innocent persons thrust into the situation and has the potential for violence. >> reporter: police arrested the man and say they found a gun inside his backpack. a second suspect was also arrested about a block away from the cafe but police wouldn't say what he was arrested for. the race for san francisco mayor added two more names today to an already crowded field. david chu delivered his paper. his campaign already has a mascot, chubaca. and supervisor john avalos also delivered signatures.

this means there are now about 30 candidates running for mayor of san francisco. the mayor to get on the november ballot is august 12. current mayor ed lee now says he is considering entering the race. lee took over for gavin newsom in february when newsom became lieutenant general. b.a.r.t. - - san francisco police say they have recovered the gun seen in this amateur video. police say the it's the gun that killed harding jr. during a shoot out in the bay view district. >> they encountered a very, very dangerous criminal and the story ended the way that it ended. >> reporter: the coroner drew

fire when they announced that harding shot himself. investigators got a crucial lead this weekend. >> they were able to identify a person on saturday that we believe knew the whereabouts of the gun and through interview and negotiation we were able to get the gun back. >> reporter: suhr says the department delayed revealing the discovery until tests were completed. >> we got ballistic confirmation this morning that that gun is an exact match for the bullet taken out of mr. harding. >> reporter: police critics say the newest findings is part of a cover up. >> i don't believe nothing they say until they show us something. >> reporter: the lawyer for kenneth harding's family tonight told us they are quote stunned and shocked and don't know what to believe. the attorney is asking the police department to release

all evidence so the family can order their own investigation. san francisco's fugitive recovery enforcement team arrested 40 people yesterday and police tell us many of the arrests were for drug, weapons and parol violations. it was the first time in two year, san francisco police have conducted a city wide operation because of budget cuts and staffing shortages. the department says it will try to do similar operations once a month. the woman accused of breaking into jeopardy host alex trebek's san francisco hotel room appeared in court today. 56-year-old lucinda moyer is accused of stealing jewelry and cash. moyers has two previous convictions for burglary which makes her eligible for the state's three strikes law if she is found guilty again. i'm going to have tomorrow's forecast and it does include a bit of a warm up. i'll show you which cities will

after nearly drowning in a swimming pool. jana katsuyama is live in san jose where neighbors learned one simple class made all the difference. >> reporter: julie, that's right. some people tonight are concerned about this 8-foot fence that you see behind me. last night a man had to scale over it to get to the father and daughter that needed help here. and residents want to make sure firefighters don't have that same problem when seconds count. >> reporter: john bale has spent the last hours telling curious neighbors and reporters what happened when he heard screams for help. he came and saw a man and his daughter unconscious. the girl's father was giving her a shoulder ride. friends and other family members could see and hear them from the hot tub. but suddenly they both lay

daughter were under water for less amount of time and they are said to be doing fine tonight. fire officials are recommending people who have concerns, the american red cross officers cpr classes and often times it's free and that proved to be valuable in last night's incident. reporting live from san jose, j janine de la vega. two brothers were arrested last night at the miami airport following a scuffle. they were asked to get off the plane after one of them did not follow flight crew instructions. the plane returned to the gate and that is when things got heated. >> they were sitting there arguing with the captain. they did not want to leave and they did not want to get off the plane. then one of the guys punched the captain right in the eye right here on his face. then that's when the captain backed up and all the other guys from the airplane started getting in on it.

>> reporter: passengers stepped in and subdued the man identified as 29-year-old luis baez and his brother jonathan. they are now facing a variety of charges. the plane eventually made it to san francisco two hours late. 34-year-old paul hoa is in critical condition after being crushed between a delivery truck and a loading dock at the prison on wednesday morning. he was rescued by fellow inmates in the prison fire department who administered first aid. the san francisco man is serving a seven year term for drug sales and possession. the findings of a state audition were found unwarranted and inflammatory. the audit shows the system spends fewer dollars per student with the greatest number of black and latino students. yudoff says the discrepancy is based on the location and types

associates of them driving their car. in oakland i'm john sasaki. east bay regional park police say they located a marijuana plantation today near where a gunman opened fire on an officer earlier this week. this is video from tuesday's search for the shooter who still hasn't been shot. police say the marijuana growing operation was discovered through aerial surveillance of the san leandr watershed. at this point they're still not sure whether the shooting is connected to that or other time of illegal activity in the area. b.a.r.t. staff members have rejected a proposal to allow bikes on its trains during rush hour. riders are allowed to bring their bikes in the last train during rush hours. the san francisco bicycle coalition says b.a.r.t. is missing out on new riders and increased revenue. and as you would expect this time of night, the fog is

the airport back as early as next year but environment impact studies and other issues will postthat date back to at least 2013. the county will continue to run the airport until then. we are learning more tonight about an army private who has admitted to plotting a terrorist attack on fort hood texas. abdo was arrested yesterday during a traffic stop in texas near fort hood. the fbi says it found an article on bomb making from an al-qaida website in his motel room along with shotgun shells, gun powder and a uniform with fort hood patches. a gun shop owner provided a tip. >> he selected six canisters of smokeless gun powder, placed them on the counter and then asked the manager what is smokeless powder. if you don't know what it is, why in the world would you buy that much? >> the suspect had been awol from his postat fort campbell, kentucky. military police say they found

six people are in the hospital tonight, one of them in critical condition after a tow truck smashed right into a japanese fast food restaurant in l.a.'s korea town. the fire department says the truck caused so much damage to the building that they had to evacuate a dental office on the second floor. at this point the cause of the crash is still under investigation. there was a major pot bust in the central valley as sheriff's deputies raided an elaborate 60-acre pot farm. this farm was surrounded by a 6- foot fence blanketed with plastic and topped with barb wire. deputies arrested 60 people and brought in a bus to take them away. police have not yet put a price

argentina at least 15 are dead and many injured after a dispute between protesters and officials. right now there are more than 200 active fires in russia and a heat wave there is sending temperatures well over 100 degrees in some locations. there are also concerns the heat and fires could wipe out crops and then create a food shortage. and in china, families of the victims of deadly train crash are leaving flowers at the accident site. the crash on saturday killed at least 39 people. a lightning strike caused the signals to malfunction. the company that designed the equipment is taking responsibility. and some of the victim's families are demanding money. a judge tentatively ruled

that a law on contributions is unconstitutional. the decision by a santa clara superior court judge is expected to become finalized next month. the city of san jose is considering whether to appeal. a former girlfriend of governor jerry brown is writing a book. the book will be called heart like a wheel. that's also the name of one of her most famous songs. she dated jerry brown during his first term. and chief meteorologist bill martin is looking ahead to the weekend forecast in six months, what we can expect for friday, saturday and sunday.

repairs have begun on docks damaged by a tsunami that surged through the santa cruz harbor back in march. but ktvu's robert handa tells us why the bill will be much higher than original estimates. >> reporter: a new dock is being assembled this week at the santa cruz harbor to replace the one known as u dock that was torn apart by the march 11 tsunami. crews expect the new dock to be ready in about three weeks. the 1.3 million repair project is a relief to many boaters and visitors who still remember seeing old sections sections of the old dog being swept away. >> we're excited, we like to see work being done here. >> it has power, it has water, it has a fire system.

on the side of the ship. so the navy has trained dolphins to put a marker on anyone who tries to get too close. a beeper then goes off. dolphins are far more reliable than under water sonar say trainers. >> she can do it at great ranges with 100% reliability. >> the dolphin then races back to the ship where she gets a reward and some affection from her handlers. and according to a report released bid realty track today, during the first six months of this year, foreclosures went down in 178 of the 211 largest metropolitan areas. california remains among the hardest hit states, in fact, california is home to seven of the last 10 metro areas with the highest foreclosure rate. las vegas has the highest foreclosure rate in the country. bank of america will take part in a program to help

troubled homeowners in california. the program is run by the state housing agency. b of a services more than 2 million mortgages in the state. since 2008 it is estimated that 1.2 million home owners in california have lost their homes to foreclosure. the risk of stroke for new mothers is on the rise. strokes jumped by 54% in the last 15 years or so. researchers believed the increase is due to higher rates of obesity and diabetes which puts even more stress on a pregnant woman's body. the highway patrol and lucielle packered showed up to show how quickly a child left

in a car can turn deadly. and the pog is rolling back in the -- and fog is rolling back in the coastline. very similar to last night's footprint. what we will see is that fog thickening up within the next hour. you will start to see that fog spilling into walnut creek here soon. these are the current temperature, you can see it's still warm. temperatures are going to come down tonight, overnight lows being in the low 50s. tonight the fog develops just like last night. tomorrow is the day a lot like today. slightly warmer in some of those inland bay valleys. a lot warmer as you get into the inland bay valley. the weekend cool coast, warm to hot inland. that's no surprise. so plenty of clouds out there this afternoon. the fog really starting to spill in. as it does, we're going to find temperatures in the morning hours in the 50s. you wake up the fog is pretty much all around the bay.

but by mid-morning it's gone and the heat from the valley starts to move west. as it does, temperatures start to pop. so tomorrow will probably be the warmest day of the week. with temperatures into the low 90s, mid-90s in some locations. far inland valleys, most of us around the bay 80s tomorrow. a nice day. fine air quality, and not as high fire danger as you would expect this time of year. some clouds are going to filter. it's sort of the north american monsoon. it's not a big plug of nature but it's enough that we could see a few thunderstorms the popping off the spine of the sierra nevada. the forecast for fog, there it is, that's nothing. you know it's going to be a pretty warm day just by virtue of that. the reason i show it to you is, when you see a little one like this you say, oh kwraeu yeah, it's going to be a warm untoday. i put the temperature forecast using colors. you can see the cool right here

san francisco firefighters spent part of the day clearing out an old fire house of toys for children. the fourth street fire station has housed the union's toy drive since 1974 but now it needs a seismic retrofit. the toy drive was almost left homeless. the fire department said it didn't have enough space. but the academy of pediatrics is letting them use a warehouse for free. a good night for the giants and tim lincecum actually feeling better. >> quick healer after the bout with the flu.
