it could be coggie but it's mainly foggy. am i going to sal or pam? >> pam, thank you. tonight family and friends will hold a vigil for the good samaritan known as brother john. 29-year-old paris powell was shot and killed while serving food to the homeless. jade hernandez joins us with the emotional reaction from the widow. >> reporter: we're at the place where the deadly shooting has took place. you will also see where there are candles still burning for the 29-year-old good samaritan that was gunned down on wednesday. paris powell's wife wanted us to call her lollly. she still has a bullet lodged in her shoulder. we spoke to her and you can see she is a woman trying to wrap

her head around the thing she has lost. her 29-year-old husband paris powell was known as brother john. powell, lollly and their two children were serving food to the homeless. paris, lollly, and one of their daughter's was hit. lolly was shot in her left shoulder. the bullet went through singing her hair. four months pregnant she says she is still in shock. >> i keep wracking my brain who could do this and why? i want the person to be caught. i want him to be caught. i mean, he didn't deserve it. >> reporter: a vigil for lolly's husband of two years is schedule tonight. the oakland police chief and city's major called this deadly

shooting senseless. powell's family said he did not have any ties to gangs or a criminal past. reporting live in oakland jade hernandez. today prosecutors are expected to release critical new evidence in a mysterious cold case in the south bay. janeen harms disappeared ten years ago this week. she is presumed dead but her body has not be found. charges of the main suspect was dropped in 2007. harms brother shot and killed nesmaey and killed himself this past february. there could be a rug linked from harms found linked to fibers found in nest may's jeep. naso says he's not been able to access his bank accounts and can't find a private lawyer who is willing

to work for free. naso should not receive public aid because he has $1 million in liquid assets. the 77-year-old murder suspect made a lot of money during his many years as a freelance photographer. a family member has identified the two bodies found in santa clara county this week as a father and son. the deaths are being investigated as a possible murder, suicide. now according to the san jose mercury news investigators believe ed dow shot his 22-year- old andrew at their home before turning the gun on himself. he was a prominent developer and andrew was a college student that was fighting cancer. friends and family of the two uc berkeley grads being held in prison in iran are holding a patrol test today in new york to demand their release. this sunday will be two years to the day that shane bauer and

josh fattal were taken captive. it's also the same day the two are scheduled for a court hearing. the court prosecutor said last month that a hearing could be made about the two. vote canceled last night. boehner canceled the vote after it became clear he did not have enough votes even from his fellow republicans to es to get -- from his fellow republicans to get it passed. meanwhile they are about to take up a bill stz created by harry reid. >> discusses are up to find a way forward. how would you harmonize with what reid has come up with and boehner? >> lawmakers will work through the weekend to try to reach an agreement. the treasury department says the u.s. will run out of money to pay its bills on tuesday. the citizens commission in charge of creating political districts in california votes

this morning on the final versions of new redistricting maps. political experts that have studied the maps say democrats stand to gain because of the states changing demographic. voters took the job of redistricting away from legislatures and gave it to a 14-member citizens commission. the new districts will be used in states for the next ten years. we have posted a link to the new maps on our website. just go to ktvu.com and click on web links. the california supreme court is not wasting any time on considering the state ban on same sex marijuanas. they will hear the case on september 6th. the justices will decide if sponsors of proposition 8 have enough to defend themselves in court. schwarzenegger and brown refused to challenge a federal court ruling striking down the ban. the state is accessing a program to eradicate illegal

marijuana. in the past 2 years the campaign has cut down more than 20 million plants including $4.3 million last year. but the bay citizen reports the program will be eliminated due to budget cuts. we are learning this morning that at least one marijuana farm has been found in the east bay park where someone shot at a regional parks officer earlier this week. swat teams searched the park on tuesday and wednesday. police say they found shell casing from the shooting and a marijuana grow site. it's still unclear if the shooting and growth site are unrelated. an update to a story we have been following for several months. the oakland tribune reports that the alameda firefighters union warned the city about taking away the water rescue program. a man took his own life after wading into the waters off of

crown beach. firefighters didn't try to save him because they said they didn't have proper certification. they have since certified 20 firefighters for water rescues. th last of four big cat walks is set to go into place. you may have noticed the other three as they are visible for drivers on the bay bridge. a fourth is expected to go up in the next couple of weeks. the cat walks are used by iron workers to build the new cable of the bridge. stringing the cable will take a year and the bridge is set to open in two years. let's check in with sal for a look at traffic. hi sal. >> traffic is doing very well. we have road work out there that you should watch out for including 680 and contra costa county. and parts of 880 in oakland. first let's take a look at east shore freeway. you can see traffic is moving along nicely if you're driving

80s. fairfield travis air force base west southwest at 28. vacaville has a west, southwest at five. the sea breeze is much stronger than it was at 24 hours ago. low clouds and fog starting to lift a little bit. they have been suppressed down to 1,000 feet. that will change knew. a weak system is moving in now. so low clouds. some fog too. very, very windy on the orinda side of the caldecott. sunny and breezy. temperatures i don't think they will change too much by the coast and bay. if anything they may cool off by a degree or two. instead of the mid 90s and now we are seeing upper 80s and low 90s. it might take a day for low counties to cool off. few clouds on saturday.

good morning. have a bigger fog bank today and a much more pronounced sea breeze. that means temperatures will be in the 70s for many. coast, bay, most of the peninsula. still some 80s inland but we are getting out of the 90s now. temperatures cool down a little bit. time is 4:42. and city leaders in galveston, texas are preparing for tropical storm don to make landfall. that is expected late today or early tomorrow. right now don is moving over the central gulf of mexico. the national hurricane center says the storm is expected to weaken as it moves toward texas. but they say city leaders should be ready. >> it's a time to looks at the evacuation plan today. if it's not this storm there could be one in the next couple

of weeks. >> it could dump 3-5 inches of rain in and around the galveston area. that is welcome news as much as 90% of texas is dealing with a drought. iranian leaders say it's too early to tell if rebels blew up a vital gas line. it halted all gas shipments from iran to turkey. no one was hurt in the blast but kurdish has sabotaged pipelines. investigators released a final report detailing the 2009 crash of an air france jet. 228 people died when that plane went down in the atlantic ocean. the report blames pilot error for causing the crash. the crews pilot scheduled to come out of a high altitude stall and that doomed the fight. i want to take you to norway this morning.

they are holding memorial services marking a week since the attacks. here's a live look this morning in oslow. this is the first of the victims. now in a speech a labor party leader said the gunman attacked norway's core values. now police this morning are interrogating suspects for a second time. although he refuses guilt, he does admit to bombing government buildings and shooting up an island youth camp last friday. investigators questioned breivik for seven hours last saturday. an awall soldier has admitted to planning an attack outside of fort hood, texas. investigators said he had weapons and enough explosions to make at least two time bombs. they believe he was planning to set them off outside the base.

he went missing earlier this month after he was recommended for a court-martial on sr. child pornography charges. funeral services will take place today for the marin county sheriff deputy killed off duty more than a week ago. he was killed while trying to so a domestic dispute. he was unarmed when the exboyfriend shot and killed him. today's funeral starts at 11:00 a.m.. that service is open to the public. family and friends of michelle le will hold a fundraiser car wash tomorrow for the missing nursing student. she was last seen two months ago at the hayward, kaiser hospital. the car wash will begin at noon tomorrow. proceeds will be donated to the reward fund which suntly stands

-- which currently stands at $100,000. san francisco police say they have recovered the gun at a center of a controversy. an amateur video shows the weapon at the scene of the shooting and the bay view district nearly two months ago. blood testic tests later showed that 19-year-old kenneth wade harding killed himself with his own gun while running away from police. police greg sur says officers were able to track down that gun with outside help. >> they were able to identify a person on saturday that we believe knew the whereabouts of the gun and through interview and negotiation we are able to get the gun back. >> critics say the new finding is part of a police cover up. yesterday, they held a noontime rally to demand an independent investigation. today lieutenant governor gavin newsom will unvail his plan for helping boost california out of its economic

slump. the new mayor is about to debate this program. one focus is expanding exports and having a state agency handle global trade issues. california is one of 15 states that does not have an export agency. today the federal government will release its report on economic growth between april and june. analysts forecast it will show the economy grew at an annual rate of 1.7%. the growth rate was 1.9% for the first three months of the year. even if things pick up this year growth in 2011 will be slower than the expansion that we had last year. a modesto mother is facing child endangerment charges after police pulled over the u- haul truck she was driving and discovered three children in the back. jennifer nolan was arrested wednesday night. police say there was a man and two-year-old child in the front seat with know lap.

she didn't tell them that there were other children in the cargo area. police say nolan told them the kids were back there because there wasn't enough room in the back. >> aside from common sense there are a number of state laws that require people more specifically kids to be properly restrained in certain places within the vehicle. that is usually the passenger compartment. >> the children were not hurt. and they were taken away by child protective services. the other child -- three of them were hers. the other child was picked up by his mother. an important change to a popular painkiller. the reason tylenol now says you should take fewer pills to ease your pain. and the operation under way to determine the seismic safety of a california nuclear plant but why not everyone is happy about it.

welcome back to the morning news. pg&e is beginning to get ready to do its in-depth studies. the studies involve heavy trucks that will use sound generating air guns to map the seismic faults in the region. they will lower the guns on the pavement and sensors will record echoes. they will spend five minutes doing that then go 100 to 300 feet down the road to do it again. >> it's like when the recycle trucks come through your neighborhood you know it's there. you know it's out there but it's not in front of your house for too long. >> some officials are not happy

with the program. john san & johnson is changing the maximum daily dose of one of its popular projects. they are changing the labels on the extra strength tylenol packages to show six pills are the most an adult can take in one day. that is down from eight. tylenol will be in stores sometime this fall. the company says it wants to reduce the risk of overdoses which can happen if people are also taking prescription medications that contain the same activity ingredients. bart riders will not be able to bring their bikes on trains. bart rejected the proposal saying there is not enough room to accommodate bikes during the morning and evening rush hours. the san francisco bicycle coalition says bart is missing out on new riders and increased revenue. i wonder how many people will be effected by that. >> i think a lot of people like doing that. more people are riding their

bikes these days. good morning, everybody. let's take a look at what we have now. traffic on the golden gate bridge looks good as you head on down toward the toll plaza. may be a little fog but not as much as we've had other days this week. i don't think it will be a big deal for you here. let's move along and take a look at the san mateo bridge. that traffic is nice heading out to the high-rise. this mornings commute is moving along very nicely on westbound 92 to san mateo bridge and before the dumbarton bridge. if you are driving to the south bay we're off to a nice start there on all the major freeways. it's 4:54 let's go to steve. all right thank you. there has been some talk. not crazy talk but talk. maybe some tropical moisture to get in here. mainly effects sierra, nevada. you can see in the last two. if the high kept building in i would say yeah. but i don't think it will

amount to too much. if you see clouds off in the distance that's what it is. tropical moisture wrapping back around. there is a lot of fog and it's on the increase. 57 fairfield. 57 concord. low 60s livermore, mountain view, and san jose. 55 seems rather popular here. oakland, san rafael, and napa. your friday morning super. santa rosa today starting off mostly cloudy. 55. we'll go 65 at noon. and 78 today for a high. temperatures below average. a lot of low clouds and fog have been banking up in the north bay keeping temperatures in the 70s. if you watch and i hope you do you know i hang my hat on that. that is the key for the sea breeze. if it's not there, than we will be warm to hot inland. when it's this strong with gusts to 30 that tells me everything we need to know. temperatures will be coming

down inland. they have been in the 60s but i don't think that will change. a little system just clipping the sea right there. that helps. that help kind of knock the high out of here. it built in and yeah it's going to back off now. the fog is increasing. the wind is picking up. warm inland. but cooler. i mean not the mid 90s. now it's upper 90s. it's -- no fog out there. it's starting to lift. when fairfield has a gust of 30 they are hard pressed to get over 90 degrees. antioch 92. morgan hill coming down a little bit. santa rosa 78. oakland 70. and the city much of the coast had 60s all week long. that will not change. maybe a few high clouds. i will mention that friday into saturday. i think after that we see night and morning low clouds. a little cooling trend. >> okay. time now is 4:56.
