of gold, craig. >> reporter: thank you, claudine, this is the memorial program they are handing out for the officer shot and killed last week, actually taking place around the corner there at the veteran's memorial. friends, family and law enforcement saying goodbye. a procession lead the hearse down south, inside the body of jim jim mathisson. when he lost his life he wasn't on duty, he was helping a friend. >> this is an emotional day. >> reporter: he got a call from a friend, she needed a help removing a boyfriend from her home. that man shot him to death when

he arrived. the woman's brother shot him, who was a parolee who had been booked into jail many times. >> if he could tell you to quit crying. suck it up buttercup was one of his favorite sayings. >> the marine county law enforcement community turned out in masse. she got into law enforcement at a late age, age 40. he had worked construction before that. his friends told mathisson law enforcement could be a good fit for his personality. but deputies say the unpredictability of domestic violence can overwhelm anybody, that is what happened to him last week. he was not duty but he died anyway. >> domestic violence cases are much more dangerous than many

of the other types of calls we respond to certainly because there is so much emotion involved. >> when he gave his life or lost his life he was doing exactly what he would do for anybody else. >> he preceded everybody into the building. we will have more later. kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. >> well, family and friends will hold a vigil tonight for the good samaritan known as brother john. paris powell was shot early wednesday morning while serving food to the homeless in east oakland. he later died of his injuries, his wife was injured in that same attack and last night she showed us the badge from the gunshot wound, threat bullet is still lodged in her upper arm but she says her emotional pain is far greater than her physical pain. >> i keep wracking my brain who could do this and why, i want the person to be caught, i want them to be caught.

i mean i mean, he didn't deserve it. >> the couple's daughter was also hit but not seriously hurt. they have arrested twomore suspects in the stabbing of a suspected gang member. they took cortez into custody now they have arrest two more. a citizens commission proved a new district based on last year's census. the 14 member citizens redistricting commission unveiled its first draft last month. a ballot measure set up the commission to take the process out of the hands of the legislation. because of demographic shifts the new districts favor democrats, republicans say they might sue because the district maps are not transparent enough. for more go to ktvu.com and

click on the politics tab. president obama says there are several ways to solve the debt ceiling crisis but it has to be a partisan solution and it has to happen fast. the president is urging democrats and republicans in the senate to come together on a plan that can pass the house and one that he can sign. he spoke at the white house as a bill written by house speaker john boehner failed to muster enough votes by gop members who say the bill does not go far enough. >> the debt ceiling does not determine how much more money we can spend. it simply authorizes us to pay the bills we already have racked up. it gives the united states of america the ability to keep its word. >> boehner is revising his bill to raise the debt limit and cut spending along with a requirement that during a second debt ceiling increase congress submit a balanced budget. harry reid is also pushing forward on a rival measure and a showdown vote on sunday. a fund-raising car wash is

warehouse in oakland. firefighters say it was tough getting inside this building because it was secure. one firefighter cut his hand and the warehouse was filled with equipment. >> we have got to the point of origin, by our certains a small area of fire but sort of in the back corner which is why it took longer. >> they boarded up the building after they were done. damage is estimated at $70,000. sea lions in trouble. they know of two in desperate need of help but finding them is not easy. allie rasmus joins us with what they are dealing with and the efforts underway to help them. >> reporter: it was tourists who first spotted these two sea lions earlier this month,

spotted across the bay from where we are standing. we are in sausalito and they were spotted on the floating docks. and they coulding tangled with a fishing line. >> this is fish in line. >> reporter: experts showed us exactly what the two sea lions are in tangled in. it is wrapped around their necks. they are trying to capture them so they can bring them to the center and nurse them back to health and release them. it is not keeping them from swimming. they are still mobile and able to function but officials say if the sea lions continue to grow that will just keep digging into them and could reach a point where they could be strangled. since they were first spotted they have tried to capture them 4 times. part of the challenge is the fact that these sea lions have

been spotted hanging out on the floating docks. >> what happens is when you go up to them all they have to do is just dive off into the water, once these animals are in the water that is their natural habitat, right? once they are in the water humans are no match for them because they swim so fast and they dive, so that makes it a challenge. >> reporter: now jim oswald with the marine mammal center says they are going to be in a in a holding pattern. they don't want to chase them because that can make it worse so they will wait a couple of days until they are spotted again, hopefully they will be spotted on a beach and not the floating docks so it is easier to get to them. allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. >> that stranded whale is showing a small sign of improvement. we have been watching the female gray whale stranded in

the river near the oregon border for a month now. marine biologist says white spots of fungus on her skin do appear to be fading, but there is nothing to eat, her calf swam back to the sea and experts hope she is going to do the same. >> he is back and it is kept secret until now. rosemary will tell us if we will see the sun, and for a while this morning the cable car line was out of commission, the reason why ahead.

cal trans is getting ready to install the 4th and final cat walk on the bay bridge in the next few weeks, three are already in place and workers will use them later this year to begin installing the cables for the new eastern span of the bay bridge, that should take a year. the new span is scheduled to be finished in two years, expect to see more highway patrol officers on the bridge. the chp says it is increasing patrols particularly heading

kentucky where he faced a possible court-martial on child porn charges. family and friends of the two uc berkeley grads detained in iran are holding a protest today to demand their release. this sunday is going to mark two years that shane bower and josh vital were arrested. their families hope they will be released at that time. a federal judge this morning ordered a transcript of richard nixon's watergate testimony to a grand jury be made public. he gave the testimony in june of 1975, 10 months after he resigned as president. history anies sueed to have it made public and the judge said the historical significance outweighs the need for secrecy
