they're lives but they are not being put to use. >> reporter: this is the turn out jacket that firefighters wear. they can often collect cancer causing particles and they have to get it clean. last december, channel 2 reported that the san francisco fire department had received five new industrial strength washing machines that push out toxins from firefighters clothing. the money was donated by the firefighters cancer prevention foundation. today we found them on an upper shelf in a warehouse most still in their boxes. >> it's a little frustrating and i want to get things going so we can actually have those washing machines. >> reporter: lieutenant anita p eranti is a cancer survivor. >> i was swearing in, i was

saying protect me from fire, please stay safe. but i never thought about cancer. until i was in the oncology waiting room. >> reporter: fire department officials say they have been unable to install the washers because the wiring in the aging fire houses will not support them. >> if we paid for installations for these machines to these stations, that would exceed the amount of money that we have in our budget for each station. >> reporter: currently firefighters send their uniforms to a cleaning service in lodite for decontamination. firefighters say they prefer the unused washing machines. >> the best thing to do is find the money and install that equipment as soon as possible. >> reporter: that could be at least two years away. reporting live in san francisco, rob roth ktvu channel 2 news. a san francisco man who was

known to generations of kids simply as santa has died. john tumi was santa claus at macy's. last year he gained attention after macy's fired him after what it called an inappropriate joke. tumi was found dead in his hotel room. the cause of his death has not yet been known but he was said to have respiratory troubles and diabetes. a defense attorney today said the death of a san francisco man who's burned body was found in a park was a horrible accident. 23-year-old freddy aldwel was found june 10 in buena vista park. today diaz pled not guilty to his death. the attorney says diaz panicked and set the body on fire. the coroner has not yet released the official cause of

death. the man charged with killing four northern california women has been told he must pay for his own lawyer. a marine county superior court judge told joseph naso he must use part of his $1 million in assets to defend himself. the 77-year-old had decided to defend himself but then changed his mind. janine harms is presumed dead even though her body has never been found. charges against maurice nesme were dropped in 2007. inspectors were expected to share evidence. but they are not telling us they won't discuss it. it's believed that the fibers could belong toe a persian rug that went missing from nesme's home. tom vacar is live at the work site now with that and the

next steps in an unusual excavation project going on there, tom. >> reporter: let's go right up to the mass cam, when we go up there what you see is that there's a crane in place where these folks are going to tie on to this spike that they're going to cut away sections, they're going to haul it away to examine its welds. what pg & e has gone is saying that the project that was supposed to be over today won't be over until tomorrow. >> we're unearthing a piece of pipe at the cpucs request. taking a look at it. reviewing the pipe and running a camera through a pipe that was abandoned in 1956. >> reporter: investigators want to look at the welds to see if they're defective. for six years up until 1956

this section of pipe was connected to the one that blew up. >> this work is directed by the cpuc. >> reporter: while this investigation continues up here, over here something very important is about to happen. a crater where the explosion originally occurred will soon be covered and closed. no longer an open sore for all to see. back live on the mass cam. after this 8-foot section is removed a major task of course, a robotic camera crew is going to bring in their equipment to bring in detailed pictures of this 8-foot length. reporting live from here in san bruno. tom vacar, ktvu channel 2 news. investigators today said a fire in walnut creek started in or near a stove but was not cooking related. the fire last friday destroyed eight units in one building and caused $2 million in damage.

13 residents were safely evacuated. fire investigators are checking that stove to see if perhaps it malfunctioned. hopes were dashed for a final debt deal when the senate quickly killed a measure. the house had just passed and then sent over the measure which was authored by republican speaker john boehner. it would have raised the debt ceiling and cut spending but would have required another debt limit debate next year. the senate voted 59-41 to kill the measure. congress plans to work all weekend on an alternative to meet tuesday's debt ceiling deadline. a senate commission approved a draft version of new california district maps and already there's talk of a lawsuit to overturn them. >> unless there was some error in the way that the calculation took place on the districts that was sufficient to warrant a review, i can't think of anything that we haven't already talked about that would consider changing. >> but the state republican

party claims the bipartisan's commission decisions were not transparent. observers say the gop could lose two or three congressional seats. if the maps are approved, the bay area may see some major changes. the state senate district currently held by mat desanio -- pleasanthill and martinez voters would join a district that includes fairfield, vallejo, napa and davis. martinez voters will be split in redrawn congressional districts, some will join richmond, walnut creek and danville. the rest a north bay district that stretches into lake county. san ramon will join the tri valley and southern alameda county. another district that includes eastern parts of contra costa county, northern san joaquin county will lose pleasanton. a citizen panel may have approved this redistricting plan, but some politics are

meat. for the more adventurous there's garlic watermelon and garlic ice cream. the event is expected to attract 100,000 people over the weekend. >> it's very, very family oriented and we want to bring the kids so they can enjoy it. and the food is great. who doesn't like garlic? >> reporter: garlic lovers got into the spirit of thing wearing garlic hats and even entire costumes. the event has three stages and 40 different acts and a childrens area and back out here live you can see i have these three little chocolate garlic frogs. and i'm going to taste one. i don't know how it tastes. hang on a second. it's actually pretty good. it has sea salt on it and it's surprisingly good. they are like $2 for three of

these chocolate garlic frogs. the festival will be open tomorrow and sunday. janine de la vega. >> she's brave out there tonight. if you want more information on the garlic festival just go to our website ktvu.com and look under the weekend special tab. you will also find directions on how to get there. law enforcement officials say more than 100 people are now in custody after a two week operation to uproot illegal pot farms. today a u.s. attorney said drug agents seized 400,000 plants for more than 50 marijuana farms. a bay area county wants to crack down on recycling theft. alameda county supervisors are considering an ordnance to fine people who are caught taking bottles and cans out of curb side containers. stealing recycling is already illegal. but adding a fine could help reduce the problem. fines would start at $100 for a first offense and go up to $500. some oakland teenagers are

there were tears and laughter at a memorial service in san rafael for slain marine county deputy. mourners remembered jim matheson as someone who could do anything large or small for those he cared about. >> my dad was a hand who held his children in the highest bracket of his love, his wife, his way of life, his job then his home. >> reporter: friends say it suited matheson because his friend say it was always his nature to serve those in need

lock then making their way in four minutes later. it's unclear if they stole anything. police are in investigating it as a vandalism case. ktvu's health and science editor john fowler is live now in rio vista with a look at why some are questioning whether this will work, john. >> reporter: we're on the delta and the plant is the water hiasins with jams the water ways as well as intakes, those bugs were intentionally released here. for the last decade, delta slews have choked with water hiasins a beautiful but insidious invader from south america. we found these crews spraying herbicide. clearly a monumental task the plant is almost unstoppable. >> it will completely take over the slew. it'll be nothing but a solid

mat of water hiasins. >> reporter: ricky carter and salvador nolasco are trying to beat the heat. heat that fuels the hiasins growth. >> every other day it doubles or triples in size. >> reporter: ranchers spend $1,500 every week just in this small slew keeping hiasins in check. state ag officials released thousands of these plant hoppers imported from the amazon. they suck is sap from this plant. they've tried this before and ricky doesn't think it'll work. >> it didn't get rid of it in the amazon, it won't get rid of it here. >> reporter: others worry that the bug may develop a taste for california crops. reporting live, john fowler, ktvu channel 2 news.

a state audition of the university of california calls for the system to make its budget process more accessible to the public. the audit found uc san francisco received the most money for people at $65,000. and uc santa barbara the least. because ucsf serves medical students those programs cost more. >> if you're up front about how you allocate your funding and what your methodology is. hopefully those questions will be answered. the former ceo of a fremont high tech company has pleaded guilty to security's fraud. nabs issued $25 million worth of stock to cover a phony death then funneled the shares to family and friends. nab facing up to 45 years in

prison when he is sentenced in november. and welcome back on this friday afternoon. your weekend in view and we've got some fog at the cost and we have warmer daytime highs to talk about tomorrow afternoon. we'll come in real close and boy i will tell you it's been a down jacket afternoon out there in the avenues of san francisco, daly city, out toward the marina green, it is cool. it's foggy. it's just not what you always  want to see. below sunshine to be nice. fog comes back tonight, this perspective from the north town. a spotty drizzle in the forecast, and we have a burst of drizzle. all along the highway into the cliff house. we have a lot of drizzle in the marine headline. and more drizzle out toward chrissy field. but that's just the way it's been all week. we've had drizzle and a lot of fog. same tomorrow, same again on sunday. really the only thing changing the forecast will be some high clouds coming in from the south. and we'll show you that in a moment. but first the fog footprint as it lays out saturday morning.

looks just like it did this morning and yesterday morning and the morning before that. this pattern i said it on monday, subtle changes. at best. day-to-day very little, very small difference. which is fine, it's been kind of nice. but if you're out in the avers and -- out in the avenues and you would like to see the sun, it's going to try to pop out. you can see stinson beach you're going to be in the fog. you can see it, you'll be able to see it just offshore. talk about those thunderstorms they're firing off from mammoth lake to bear valley. tomorrow, more of that tropical moisture moves north. chance for scattered thunderstorms. watch them fire off in the loop. in the afternoon, 4:00, 5:00, 6:00 in the afternoon starts getting warm. they pop off. moisture is in place. you're not going to see it overnight it needs that daytime heating. tomorrow afternoon they pop up again. watch what happens sunday, a lot more moisture comes in. this is when we could see or

so they can illude the rescuers. >> reporter: it's too dangerous to try to grab the seals at pier 29. they're hoping for land rescue. the raiders lose arguably their best player. also the rush is on as the niners get ready for their first game in just two weeks from now.

mark is off tonight, fred inglis is filling in. we all knew it was going to happen, but it's a big loss for the oakland raiders. >> we all knew that raiders namdi asemguah was leaving the raiders, but no one thought he was going to philadelphia. the crown jewel takes a pay cut after earning nearly 50 million in 2010. namdi has never reached the postsystem in eight years of oakland, and the phillys are play off and super bowl contenders. new head coach jim harbaugh held his first practice. the all prolinebacker practice willis is still on this team.
