morning. ktvu allie rasmus joins us live from san bruno. >> reporter: the crews haven't arrived just yet. we are told they will be arriving here shortly. they have ordered pg&e to do this excavation work. it's part of their investigation into what may have caused the pipeline disaster. but the pipeline they want to take a closer look at is right here next to us. under ground behind this fenced off area. we have a closer up look of who it looks like down here. you can show you that video. this is where they removed an all the foot section of pipeline. this particular pipeline you are looking at hasn't been used in more than 50 years. it's not the pipeline that ruptured in the explosion. this one has been connected to the one that exploded. investigators plan to run a camera through the old pipeline. they are going to take a closer look at it to see if the way it may have been welded or cruxed

may offer clues to the san brew knee pipeline ex-- san bruno pipeline explosion. it destroyed 38 homes. many people in the area had months of counseling. it's expected to complete its investigation into what happened later next month. and back out here live once again you are taking a look at the area where they removed an eight foot section of pipe here. and we are told that crews will be back again this morning. sometime in the next hour or so. we will be here on the scene. we will be gathering more information for you and check back with you in a half hour from now. live in san bruno allie rasmus. new this morning the two uc berkeley graduates could soon be on their way home. shane bauer and josh fattal have a court hearing tomorrow. the fact the hearing coincides with the second anniversary of their arrest is a good sign. they could actually be free. he says prisoners are also

there is a $25,000 reward in the case. powell's wife was overwhelmed with emotion during last nights vigil for her husband. she was barely able to speak. a church leader lead dozens of people in prayer and powell's realtives wore white t-shirts baring his photo. they can't believe that someone would take the life of a man that put himselfs in front of others. >> he would come out here and give. he gave three days a week. ministered to them. talked to them. >> ktvu viewers are coming to the families aid. lone tree cemetery is offering a burial plot. powell's family has expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and donations from the community. for the first time the man wrongly accused in the beating of giants fan bryan stow is going public.

they exonerated giovanni ramirez. he released a statement saying he's upset about the grief and embarrassment his family has been put through. >> the country has learned a lot of lessons in the arrest of giovanni ramirez. >> los angeles police arrested ramirez in may and found a gun inside of his apartment. it was a violation of his patrol. as a result a judge sent him back to prison for ten months. earlier this week his attorneys filed a request to get him released. bryan stow still remains hospitalized at san francisco general. a ct scan shows excess fluid building up around stow's brain. they are waiting to see if he can absorb the fluid of his own. hikers that went over the yosemite park water fall is having their own safety check. they slipped and fell more than

300 feet to their deaths. the families claim the guardrail and warning signs are not enough to keep people safe. yosemite park officials said last week they do not plan on any safety changes. a health alert regarding tainted turkey meat. they have found salmonella in ground turkey. investigators have been unable to track down the specific food company or brand. people have suffered abdominal cramps or fever within three days of eating the food. internal temperatures must reach 165 degrees. new this morning a plane from new york crash lands. the caribbean airlines jet overshot the runway and snapped into two. the plane carried 140 passengers. there are no reports of any deaths. the cause of the crash is under investigation but it was rainy at the time. an investigation is under

this morning your current temperature is 57 san rafael and santa rosa. upper 50s san francisco. 60 degrees in oakland. concord checking in at 59 degrees. livermore outside your door 59 degrees as well. i want to show you this wide view of the satellite and radar. a couple things to talk about. the moisture that is migrating north. more so tomorrow. may see a little bit of a cloud pile up over some of our southern mountains. we are talking south eastern monterey. & curran county may see some of this. meanwhile we have the trough sitting here. it will deepen over the next couple of days. we know trough means cooler air. we are expecting temperatures to cool slightly for today. more so by monday. your forecast here first i want to point out the clouds over us. this morning burning off by 10:00 or 11:00 looks like backing off along the coast. could hang tough through parts of the afternoon.

partly cloudy skies expected for the second half of the day. i also want to point out the moisture you see here. it looks like yosemite south is where we will see the possibilities. as we move through sunday even waking up sunday morning we have clouds over us and we've got that moisture. dancing around it looks like again south eastern monterey. seeing some of this and then that will pretty much be about it. could be a little muggy in some areas. especially for the south bay. today we have the morning clouds. we have the afternoon sea breeze. temperatures very similar to yesterday. slightly cooler in some spots. take a look at this 75 expected for nevada today. 68 in borkly. upper 60s and low 70s. 75 for fremont. mid 80s livermore concord. 78 expected in san jose. another cool day for the coastline. half-moon bay 69 degrees. 70 san mateo. low and mid 60s for the city of san francisco.

your extended forecast there temperatures don't budge a whole lot. we cool a little bit monday into tuesday. and it looks like our inland spots will continue with this nice warm yet unseasonally mild weather as we roll into the first half of next week. we'll have more on the thunderstorm risk over the sierra. even a flash flood watch to talk about. time now 7:10. let's give you a live look outside at some of the traffic. that is 101 in marin county. things looking smooth both north and southbound. ther up north on 101 we are getting a report of a grass fire near dry creek road. and also a report of a collision in the northbound direction of east baker aver in santa rosa. chp is responding to both of those incidents. a portion of 101 in san jose will be shut down tonight for overnight construction starting at midnight. two lanes of the north and southbound directions will be closed between mclaugh lin

avenue and tolely road. highway patrol is assigning more officers to catch drivers speeding on the bay bridge. i want to give you a live look at the span right now. chp says its sensors have detecting more and more drivers speeding up as they approach the s curve. officers say they are seeing an average increase of ten miles an hour. especially during off peak times. cal tran tends to schedule its maintenance work during off peak hours. that is creating concerns for the workers out there. the crack down is expected to last through late august. ac transit bus fairs are going up on monday. they need to generate more money due to the tough economy. fares for seniors and those that are disable willed incross for a nickel. the adult fare will go up 20- cents to $4.20. putting the nation's debt problems into perspective.

democrats voted against a republican debt ceiling plan. it wasn't enough to stop the gop from getting enough votes to pass it. the plan raises the government's borrowing limit in two stages. the second contingent on congress passing a balanced budget amendment. >> this house has acted. and it is time for the administration and time for our colleagues across the aisle put something on the table. tell us where you are. >> reporter: and shortly afterwards the senate did just that and rejected the measure. democratic leaders introduced their own plan which calls for a larger debt limit increase giving the government enough cash to pay the nation's bills through the end of next year. >> the american people want us to work this out and we have tried. we have given. we have compromised. it was just no give on the other side. >> reporter: in three hours the senate begin debate on the democratic proposal. the house has already vowed to vote it down. for now, the deadlock continues. live in washington, carroll han

ktvu channel 2 news. >> and so we wait. time now is 7:16. the sign of the times apples has more cash than the u.s. government. in its latest earning statement the cupertino based company says it has more than $76 billion. apple ceo steve jobs says last year he likes keeping lots of company cash on hands for strategic opportunities in the future. the debt show down in washington, d.c. is continuing to cause wall street worries causing the worst week for the markets in a year. the dow jones dropped 96 points yesterday to close at 12, 143. that was the sixth straight decline. the nasdaq fell nine points to 2,056. they are wondering whether they should move their money out of stocks and mutual funds. many are afraid the government could default. the debt crisis on capitol hill is weighing heavily on troops in afghanistan.

they are wondering if they will get their paychecks. during a visit to afghanistan today the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff told a group of soldiers he doesn't know. he says he believes troops will eventually get paid but acknowledges waiting for that money would be difficult for troops which live paycheck to paycheck. california presidential primary is moving from february to june next year to save the state money. governor brown signed a bill yesterday making that official. it's expecting to save california $100 million. the move means a statewide primary will take place on the same day back in 2008. california tried to increase its political cloud by moving its presidential primary to super tuesday in february. a new political ad targeting identity theft is hitting bay area radio and already generating controversy. >> i just got back from the super market and the pushy signature gathers are back. >> i even read the names and addresses on petitions were sent to other countries. including india.

>> who know what is they did with it. >> that radio ad is from californians against identity theft. they are warning the public about -- keep some issues away from voters like antiunion measures. >> what you are being asked to sign is your name and address. for many people that is in the phone book already. >> the man behind the ads say they are designed to stop antiunion initiatives. u.s. immigration immigrants have raid the the university of northern virginia. northern virginia is an unaccredited for profit college with mostly students from india. the school has 30 days to conform with federal rules over student visas. no one has been arrested. and northern virginia remains open. last january immigration agents rated a school that had a similar business model.

the government called trivalley university sham university. authorities accused schools admitting foreign students and collecting tuition while not requiring them to attend classes. the school was shut down over allegations of visa fraud. someone has stolen a cash say of high power weapons. the atf says 24 assault rifles were taken from a supply warehouse. they have recovered one weapon and made few arrests. the government is offering a $10,000 reward leading to additional arrests. the army private facing federal bond making charges remains behind bars this morning after an outburst at his first court appearance. it happened yesterday in waco, texas. 21-year-old abdu refused to

yosemite national park is getting a makeover. the park service approved plans to thin out some of the trees that obstruct views of the water falls. no rare trees are going to be cut. park officials point out the valley floor actually has more trees than when it first became a park in the 19th century. in the end tropical storm don petered out.

penguin chicks will go on display today. they hatched in may. but they are now ready to join the other zoo's penguins and that brings the total there to 49 which is the largest group of penguins of that kind in north america. a daughter fighting for her life after a car accident. >> i still cry every day it has been two years. i cry every day. >> this mornings young woman's mother is asking for help to keep her treatment going. and an 11-year-old crime fighter helps stop a group of crooks in the middle of a crime. why police say he may have stopped a nation-wide crime spree.

digging down to take a closer look. the work in san bruno as the search for answers for the deadly explosions continues. the focus is on a section of pipe once connect to the same pipe that exploded last september. we have more from the site. alley, is there any signs of the crew? >> reporter: no, the crews have not arrived yet but because they have not arrived we can give you good look at what they are looking at. you can see the hole in the

ground where crews have removed an 8-foot section of old gas line. they did that removal work yesterday around 7:30 and the crews will be back to do additional work, investigators had planned to use an older pipeline that hadn't been used since 1956. they are being ordered to do this investigating work and it is part of the investigation into what might have called the pipeline explosion. investigators want so see if the old pipe may offer them any clues. the explosion killed 8 people and destroyed 38 homes and maybe neighbors that survived have gone through months of counseling and therapy to deal with the trauma. natsb is supposed to complete their investigation next month. to recap, we know investigators have removed the section of pipeline that they have been

working on for the last day or so. we don't know if they have run a camera through the old pipeline, second component of the work. that's one of the things we will ask crews when they arrive. we will have another report for you at 8:00. a san francisco man accused of set fire to another man's body remains behind bars. david munoz diaz pleaded guilty to murder and arson. he says the man died doing sex and he panicked and torched the body to hide the evidence. the coroner has yet to determine the death. the victim worked in a restaurant. police say his phone and wallet were missing. a millionaire accused of serial murders will have to pay for his own lawyer. the judge turned down his request for a public defender.

he said he couldn't access money but prosecutors argued that he has a million dollars in liquid assets. he decided his first lawyer and decided to defend himself and later requested a lawyer to help him because he can't do the legal work from jail. a fundraiser is scheduled today for missing nursing student michelle lay. she was last seen two months ago at the kaiser hospital. proceeds will be put in a reward fund. a mother is helping the public to help in her daughter's help to survive. a fundraiser will be held for 20-year-old jessica hughes. two years investigators say someone slammed into her bw beetle as she was driving to church in san jose and suffered a traumatic brain injury and nearly died. she is a special rehab facility in new jersey. although jessica cannot speak right now, her mother says she

knox. a police detective that conducted the investigation can testify in the appeals case. court appointed experts had contested her findings claiming investigation committed glaring errors such as using dirty glove and possibly contaminating evidence. knox was convicted of sexually assaulting and murdering british student amanda coucher. the media is under scrutiny, murdock is saying to preserve and maintain any documents related to phone hacking or bribery. the directive came down yesterday. murdock closed down his world of the news tabloid in britain earlier after it was hit with phone hacking and bribery accusations. a southern california congressman says the noise in la is bad enough and howard burrman props a limit to chopper traffic.

francisco. san francisco mayor race is always a drama and ed lee has until august 12th and it looks like the honeymoon is over for ed lee, his rivals are sort of ganging up questioning some of the campaign issues going on with his supporters. ed lee has very high profile supporters, rose peck and the chinese chamber of power house and she has been doing work behind the scenes call progress for all and that has raised questions or allegations that she has been pressuring people and one of the city contractors employees to work on behalf of ed lee. some of the rivals are already working to get some answers to these questions and ed lee is getting pressure to run and he would be the front-runner and a lot of people think he will jump into this one. >> you have this run ed run campaign where they have been

walking around getting signatures and senator finestine. this is not a not crowded field. you got a lot of people running for mayor of san francisco. is this more people feeling the threat of his campaign or do you think this is something going on that wasn't up to par? >> there is a lot of questions here absolutely but you are absolutely right, this is a crazy race. you got 30 candidates, about nine of them being considered top tier. certainly ed lee is the top of the tier if he gets in and there's a lot the stakes for other candidates. city attorney ed reverera, there's a lot of names. this is always a drama and more so and with the progress for

all and with the ed run ed campaign, that has created more news. people think ed lee would be the strongest candidate and he said he wouldn't run and his rivals would use that against him. >> i do want to ask you one last question on the debt ceiling, do you think this will come down to the 11th wire or do you think we will spill over the edge. >> one trillion dollar question. republicans and the tea party are just throwing this into a total tizzy. so much is at stake for california when you are talking billions of dollars in federal funds and everyone is holding their breath and it is hard to predict. the tea heart has conducted how it will come out. >> we could talk about everything going on around the

country. thank for joining us. newsome introduced a plan saying that the state must make itself competitive to stop businesses from shipping jobs to other states. >> the state of utah opened up an office in the state of california to recruit businesses. austin city in texas is opening up an office in california to take jobs and we are sitting here getting poached. some of the goals for the next 180 days is to create a model for state issues and rejuvenate manufacturing and bolstering education and to have action teams to follow through. the city of alelo, after three years of cuts and layoffs, the u.s. bankruptcy court gave approval to their plan to exit court protection and it includes cutting

interest payments and reducing benefits to retirees. they declared chapter 9 bankruptcy in 2008 after tax revenue plummeted with the housing crash and some people are hoping for a treasure start. the city leadership, they still have tough decisions to make but i think they are trying to do the best they can, especially in the area of public safety. the bankruptcy judge is expected to sign off on the final agreement next week. a second target store is coming to san francisco. the san francisco planning commission has approved a new store, target plans over to take over the site of the former mervin store. the 120,000 square foot space will open in august of 2012. washing machines continue

to gather dust. the department received five new industrial spaced washing machines but they spin so fast they have cancer causing particles but the washers are sitting in a warehouse because of the electrical wiring in the firehouses can't support them. >> it is frustrating and i want to get things going so we can have the washing machines. i never thought about cancer in washing machines. firefighters currently send their dirty gear to a service in lodi. the city will renovate many of san francisco's firehouses and improvements will include upgrading the wireing to accommodate the washing machines and that could take at least two years. the special deal a world- famous band is now offering to

a glass of lemonade cost a kansas businessman $10,000. it was all for charity. george holland passed off a giant check to children running their own lemonade stand in wichita in hopes of raising money for tornado victims in missouri. beside the $10,000 donation the stand has managed to raise 3400 extra dollars. san francisco will celebrate the grand opening of a new library.

airlines plane broke on landing in gyyana. the plane overshot the runway in rain early this morning, barely missing a 200-foot ravine. several people were hurt, but the extent of injuries is not clear. the plane left new york late last night and made a stop in trinidad before flying into guyana. at least four people are hurt in oakland after four separate shootings. one man was shot in the foot just after 8:45 last night, then walked to a dui check point to get help. around 9:15 last night, police found a male juvenile with a gunshot wound at east 15th street and 12th avenue, and then just before 2:00 a.m., two gunshot victims were found near fenom and 65th avenue. no one is in custody for any of the shootings. last year's deadly pipeline explosion continues. that is where ktvu is live this

morning, and where pg&e crews unearthed an 8-foot section of pipe overnight. >> reporter: 10 minutes ago, i heard a pg&e spokesman who said work crews will start arriving in the next 20 to 30 minutes. this is where they will be working, all happening in this hole you see in the ground right beside us. yesterday, work crews removed an 8-foot section of pipe in this ground that you're looking at. that pipe had been connected to the one that exploded back in september. now, that 8-foot section was taken out yesterday around 7:30, but crews will be back this morning to break off the seal of an old pipe that hasn't been used in 50 years. the pipe you're looking at, you can see the seal on it looks pretty old. they will break that open and then run a camera through it inside the pipeline to see how it was constructed or welded, to offer any clues about the san bruno pipeline explosion. workers got here on thursday. they have been doing the excavation work since then. people living in the area say they don't mind the construction

good morning, san rafael. a gloomy start to your morning. afternoon sunshine expected for your neighborhood. well, in the end, tropical storm don just petered out. south texas farmers and ranchers hoped don would bring much-needed rainfall. instead, the area received less than an inch of rain and strong breezes. don never did turn into a hurricane, just becoming a weak cluster of storms. while mother nature spared the south, it pounded the midwest. torrential rains triggered flooding in savanna, illinois. entire neighborhoods had to evacuate. it is deja vu for residents there, as powerful storms flooded that town last year. >> it's so much, and then to have it wiped out last year and now basically start over. >> nice to see the neighborhood joining together to help each

other out, borrowing each other's pumps and flashlights. >> leaders say they are worried about the frequency and location of the flooding. some homes were foreclosed and others remain vacant after last year's floods. the army private facing federal bomb-making charges remains behind bars this morning after an outburst at his first court appearance. it happened yesterday in waco, texas. 21-year-old naser abdo refused to take the stand -- refused to stand, rather, when the judge entered the room, then yelled a reference to the army psychiatrist charged with killing 13 people at fort hood two years ago. someone has stolen a cache of military weapons. the atf says 26 ak-74 rifles and sniper rifle were taken from a supply warehouse two weeks ago. so far, investigators have recovered one weapon and made a few arrests. the government is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to additional arrests.

the atf won't say whether those already in custody are military or civilians. the trial of casey anthony cost florida taxpayers almost $700,000. that's according to new calculations from the agencies involved. prosecutors are now seeking reimbursement from anthony. a hearing is scheduled for late august where a judge will decide how much of the bill anthony must pay. she was acquitted earlier this month of murdering her 2-year-old daughter caylee, but she was convicted of lying to detectives about her missing daughter. casey anthony was released from prison two weeks ago. her whereabouts are unknown. today, prosecutors at amanda knox's appeal trial are dealing with forensic experts who say some of the key dna evidence to convict knox was unreliable and possibly contaminated. knox was convicted in the 2007 death of her roommate meredith kercher. much of today's debate centered around a kitchen knife

prosecutors believed was the weapon. they maintained knox's dna was on the handle and kercher's on the blade, but independent experts told the court this week the knife was not properly kept, saying the dna on the blade was below the minimum necessary for tests to be considered reliable. california's presidential primary is moving from february to june next year to save the state money. governor brown signed a bill yesterday, making it official. it's expected to save california $100 million. the move now means the state-wide primary and presidential primary will take place on the same day. back in 2008, california tried to increase its political clout by moving its presidential primary to super tuesday in february. a new political ad targeting identity theft is hitting bay area radio, and it's already generating controversy. >> i just got back from the supermarket and those pushy signature gatherers are back. >> i even read names and addresses on petitions were sent to other countries, including india! >> who knows what they did with it! >> that radio ad is from

californians against identity theft. they are warning the public about signature gatherers for ballot measures and propositions. critics claim the ads are a move to keep some issues away from voters, like antiunion measures. >> you're being asked to ask on a ballot measure is your name and address. for many people, that's in the phone book already. >> the man behind the ads denies they are designed to stop antiunion initiatives before they ever make the ballot. california's political districts have been redrawn. the california citizens redistricting commission finished its work yesterday. redistricting takes place every 10 years to reflect changing census data. this year, changes will likely eliminate some republican legislative seats, which is causing some controversy. the commission will accept public comment for the next two weeks, when minor changes can be made. the final vote will be taken on august 15. you can take a look at the maps for yourself to see how the redistricting impacts where you live. just click on the state politics tab of ktvu.com.

u.s. immigration agents have raided a virginia college. a government is threatening to strip the college the right to admit foreign students. the school has 30 days to conform with federal rules over student visas. no one was arrested and northern virginia does remain open. last january, immigration agents raided a pleasantton school that allegedly had a similar business model. the government called tri valley university sham university. authorities accused the school of admitting foreign students and collecting tuition while not requiring them to attend classes. the school was shut down over allegations of visa fraud. time now is 8:20. it's an unusual dress that made headlines last year. lady ga ga's meat ensemble at the mtv music awards, and how it's going to be preserved forever. planning your day? we have your numbers for you, coming right up. a live look outside our doors,

washington. just three days remain before the country runs out of money to pay its bills. ktvu's carol hahn is live in our washington, dc newsroom, as lawmakers remain deadlocked. carol? >> reporter: good morning, claudine. let me take you live to the u.s. capitol right now, where you can see for yourself it's been a fairly quiet morning. that's about to change. in half an hour, lawmakers in the u.s. house head back to work after the drama last night. >> the bill is passed. >> reporter: that's when every single lawmaker from the bay area, all democrats, voted against the republican debt ceiling plan, but it wasn't enough to stop the gop from getting enough votes to pass it. the plan raises the government's borrowing limit in two stages. the second contingent on congress passing a balanced budget amendment to the constitution. shortly afterwards, the senate rejected it and democratic leaders introduced their own plan. it gives the government enough money to pay the nation's bills through the end of next year, and republicans are already panning it. >> our democratic friends here in the senate have offered no

an update to the overnight plane crash good guyana. this picture is just into the ktvu newsroom. the crash happened after the caribbean airlines plane couldn't stop for some reason. we're now being told 157 passengers were on board the plane. there were no fatalities, but several are hurt. the extent of injuries is not clear. the plane left new york city last night and stopped in trinidad before flying to guyana. a millionaire accused of serial murderer in the bay area will have to pay for his own lawyer. a marin county court turned down his request for representation. the 77-year-old fired his first lawyer and decided to defend himself, but he later requested an attorney to help him because he says he can't do the necessary legal work from jail. the man accused of setting fire to another man's body at a san francisco park has pled not

street. he delighted children for 20 years at macy's union square, but the store fired him last year for making an inappropriate joke. he played santa down the street to raise money for a toy drive. john cooney was 62 years old. he died of natural causes. he was the leader of the police department, chief anthony bass joins us this morning. thank you for joining us. i want to talk about the former interim police chief over in san francisco. you brought him on board recently to be your deputy chief. was he knocking on your door? were you knocking on his? you've taken a little heat from the union regarding the process you went about this. >> it was a mutual agreement or attachment. i asked jeff to come over and i've known him for a number of years, asked him to look at our crime analysis. we don't have a system that is

as efficient takes should be. he said he was open to it. i was open to it. we went forth. we obeyed all the policies and rules. i think the union wanted to have more influence. >> because of his total in san francisco, he was the interim chief there. is there any reason you're bringing him over, possibly setting him up to be the next chief of the oakland police department, whenever you may depart? >> no, not at all. jeff has no interest in being chief. if he wanted to be chief, he would have done that in san francisco. he has an interest to stay in law enforcement. because of budget cuts, he was reduced to civilian supervisor in san francisco. he wants to come back to be an officer. his family is here, rooted in the bay area. he wants to get back into a police department and we can use him. chief, i want to take you back to march 2009, when the department lost -- six, seven months later, you decide to become the chief of the department out of really what you said was that story of that day at the funeral, you felt the department needed someone to be there, to lead them at the time.

here you are. october of 2009, almost two years from when you actually were hired on. do you still feel that passion and that's the reason why you're staying in oakland? >> the passion is not only for the officers, but for the residents and the citizens. here in oakland, you have some of the nicest people, some of the most wonderful people. i spent last night out at the event and people were talking, and this town, this city deserves a lot better, so we're going to try our best to make it a good place. and you talked about the people of oakland and the community. do you still feel there's a disconnect between your department, the officers, and the community from when you took the job in october of 2009 and today? >> i think we have work to do, but i think the gap has been closed. we are working very closely with the community. we're taking steps to get closer. i think what you're seeing is people are giving us better information, coming forth, and that's trust. i think we continue to build trust in this community, but we do have ground to make up. >> you recently reorganized the department. quickly, how's that going so far? >> i think it's not a pansy yeah

for the organization. we're making the organization the most efficient way we possibly can and to build capacity in our homicide unit, capacity in our property crimes unit, and to make sure that we have more supervision on the streets and to have more folks, efficient approach to solving crime. you thought about heading down to san jose-- >> why do you have to bring that up, mike? >> well, it's kind of my job. i'm sorry. >> san jose is in the past, in the rear view mirror. my focus is here in oakland and staying through the life of my contract and doing a good job for oakland. >> and looking forward to the raiders season. >> amen, mike. >> thanks for taking the time. >> thanks, mike. a fund-raising car wash is scheduled today for missing nursing student michelle lay. she was last seen two months ago at heyward kaiser hospital. the car wash will begin at noon

at the sizzler. proceeds will be donated to the reward fund, which currently stands at $100,000. a south bay mother is asking the public to help in her daughter's fight to survive. a fund-raiser will be held today for 20-year-old jessica hughes. two years ago, investigators say someone slammed into her vw beetle as she was driving to church in san jose. she suffered a traumatic brain injury and nearly died at the scene. jessica is currently at a special rehab facility in new jersey. although jessica can't speak right now, her mother says she is still hopeful one day her daughter will talk. >> i know the statistics, i know all that, but it's like you do whatever it takes, and to give her the best chance possible, you know. like i said, she says my daughter, she's my best friend. >> today's walk a-thon raises money for a year of treatment. registration begins this morning at 9:00 at valley christian school. find out more information at our website and clicking on web

links, near the bottom of the home page. only on 2, specialized washing machines designed to prevent cancer among firefighters continues to gather dust. last december, we reported the san francisco fire department received five new industrial strength washing machines. they spin so fast, they push out toxic particles from firefighters' clothing. cancer prevention foundation for firefighters donated the money, but the washers now sit inside a warehouse because the electrical wiring in the city's aging fire houses cannot support them. >> it's frustrating, and i want to get things going so we can have those washing machines. when i was swearing in -- i never thought about cancer until i was in the oncology waiting room. >> firefighters currently send their dirty gear to a cleaning service in lodi for decontamination. the city says it will renovate many of san francisco's 43 fire houses. improvements will include upgrading the electrical wiring

to accommodate the washing machines, but that could take at least two years. time now, 8:50. an 11-year-old boy is being credited for helping bust a coast-to-coast crime spree, stretching from los angeles all the way to new jersey. wharton, new jersey police say four people stopped on the street wednesday afternoon and lifted up their car hoods, making it look like they had engine trouble. the group then approached a 93-year-old woman and asked her for help. >> two females approached her, said, you know, our car's broken down, could we get a glass of water, something like that. as they distract this woman, the two males slip into the house, grab a pillowcase, throwed with jewelry. >> the 11-year-old saw the robbery and told his grandfather who called police. investigators say the group had pulled similar robberies across the country. the world champion giants are looking to bounce back after an extra inning loss in cincinnati. eli whiteside got the 8th inning double. aubrey huff came around all the way from first to tie the game at 3-3. giants did have a chance to go

tomorrow. it is the 34th running of the san francisco marathon. the loop course starts at the fair building, goes along the embarcadero, over the golden gate, all the way back to -- it is the 13th largest marathon in the country. the elite runners begin at 5:30 tomorrow morning. there are a few new additions at the san francisco zoo, but the penguin chicks were born two months ago. why they are just now joining their feathered friends.

two popular visitors to san francisco's pier 39 may be in serious trouble. tourists certainly loved to snap pictures of sea lions, however, pictures recently taken show a pair of sea lions tangled in fishing lines. you can see the lines appear to loop around the necks of a 400-pound adult and a 200-pound juvenile. the marine mammal center has been looking for those two sea lions for weeks. searchers plan to wait until the two wade ashore, and then they will rescue them. 25 sea lions last year with caught in fishing lines or nets. penguin chicks will go on display today at the san francisco zoo. the baby penguins were taken to fish school so they could learn to swim and eat from a human hand, but now they are ready to
