"mornings on 2" starts right now. well, good morning to you. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm tori campbell. it's tuesday august 2nd. developing news in the east bay. there's been police activity at two crime scenes in san leandro this morning. ktvu's allie rasmus was first at interstate 580. she's now live at a neighborhood minutes away. so are the two crime scenes connected? >> reporter: that's what we're still trying to figure out. we're on east 59th. the alameda county sheriff investigators in the last 15 minutes extended the crime scene. they were doing this to investigate a shooting. they've extended the area. the walgreens store is on the other side of that salmon-

colored house you are looking at. this entire area roped off is all part of an investigation into a shooting that happened this morning. if we pan across the street, you can see some of the evidence markers lining the street. there's also alameda county investigators. we've seen them collecting evidence. newschopper2 was over the scene. we do know one person was shot. we don't know their condition or their involvement in the shooting. we also don't know what exactly led up to the shooting. the officers say they can't release any information to me right now. we're waiting for the alameda sheriff investigators. one thing we're trying to confirm, is the shooting investigation you see on east 14th street is connected to another criminal investigation earlier this morning. that one was taking place on westbound 580 at 150th avenue.

that's where we were just before 5:00 this morning. we know that investigation is also with regards to a shooting. but again, we don't know if that investigation is connected to the shooting that happened in walgreens. we can tell you the two scenes are about a mile and a half apart. earlier this morning, there were two lanes westbound 580 closed off to traffic for about an hour. alameda county sheriff deputies towed away a car as part of the evidence. back out here live in san lee an dre on -- san leandro, we're trying to figure out if this shoot something connected to the crime on westbound 580. we'll continue to gather evidence and bring you more information as it becomes available. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. a registered sex offender is suing the city of elk grove right near sacramento so he can stay in his parents' house that's near a neighborhood

mark. the michael escobar -- michael escobar says an ordinance that bans him a certain amount of feet from a park violates his civil rights. he served nine years for sexually molesting a child. as part of his parole, he wears a tracking device to monitor where he is. >> i don't have any problem, you know, with the monitors that we wear. that's great stuff. in fact, the monitor helps me probably more than it helps them because now i know they know where i am all of the time. >> he said he would be homeless if he moves. the city is denying thal gations and are -- the allegations and are asking the court to throw out his lawsuit. 7:04. fenton's creamery, the historic ice cream shop in oakland is considering expanding into la fayette. but there could be a snag. jade hernandez is live to tell

us what might hold up the move. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. parking in this area, plaza way, is an historic area of downtown which was meant for horses and buggies back in the day. not cars. and the number of parking spaces fen ten's would -- fenten's would need needs to expand. city council members and city commissioners are exploring the possibility of a new location along plaza way. the issue, the area has fewer parking spaces for what a city requires for a business these days. they need 15 parking spots. right now they only have 12. there are ways to involve this problem. but city county members and city commissioners are looking to find out how other owners feel about the options.

tonight, first of several meetings will be held at 10:00 -- at 5:00 tonight. la fayette city councilman, mike anderson, spoke with us in the past half-hour and he says he's ready to hear what people think. >> all i've heard is a lot of people were kind of excited about it. but what we have to do is make sure her not going to damage to the other viabilities of the damage in the area. >> reporter: fenten's like the idea of moving to this area. the public is invited to the meeting tonight at the city offices of along mount diablo boulevard. muni ambassadors in the southeast part of san francisco, well, they are here to say. the 12-member team of ambassadors finished a year- long pilot program to improve the safety along the third street at number 9 san bruno

80 santa clara. 60s and 70s along the san mateo coast. santa cruz eeked out a 73. overall, it just doesn't look like much is happening. very quiet pattern. >> okay. thank you, steve. the u.s. senate is scheduled to vote on the debt ceiling legislation in just two hours. that's after it passed in the house last night. emily schmidt is live in washington, d.c. where the down- to-the-wire vote is about to take place. >> reporter: good morning. president obama needs to have a bill on his desk before the end of the day to beat the debt deadline. all eyes are on the senate to try to make it happen. this is the sound of a debt ceiling on its way to being raised. the ayes are 269. the nays are 161. the bill is passed without objection. >> reporter: house speaker john boehner delivered the news last night as the house passed the

the bipartisan. it was a plan with plenty of opposition. >> this is the wrong approach for our economy at the wrong time. it goes against our basic values, but supporters said default for the u.s. just wasn't an 0 option. this -- an option. this would affect all people if we defaulted. >> reporter: one of the yes votes proved especially emotional. arizona representative gabrielle giffords cast her first vote since being shot in the head in january.

is suspicious. >> until we determine the cause and manner of her death, we are just going forward with a suspicious death but we're treating it as a criminal investigation based on what we know at have juncture. top national security officials could be on a hiring spree this week at a computer hacker conference in las vegas. 10,000 people are expected at the event this year. officials hope to enlist the best and brighters to help protect the u.s. against cyber attacks. it's an odd mix because many of the people who go there might seem like anti-government types. the entrance fee is $150 in cash. there's no registration, no credit cards and no names are taken. a british newspaper owned by rupert murdoch is reporting

a cyber attack. a group is claiming responsibility. hackers took readers' names, addresses, birthdays and phone numbers and also redirected readers to a fake story. some new reports from syria this morning. the government troops are cracking down on protests in the city of hama. [ sound of gunfire ] >> they say government troops are shooting at anybody out in the streets. it appears the crackdown is aimed at protests during ramadan. well, the red cross says it's distributing food to 160,000 victims in somalia but

many more people need help. the people there lined up -- look at these pictures -- lining up for buckets of rice and beans that could last for a month. but the red cross says they are dealing with familiar mon. the red cross -- fact mom -- fathom. israel's prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, is reportedly ready to have peace talks. back in may, the president suggested a deal be negotiate based on the pre1967 borderline. once the border lines are established, the debate moves on to how to share jerusalem and the fate of the refugees. it's been nearly a month since a fishing boat capsized.

during a day-time robbery is safe right now. kraig debro is live where it all started. kraig, there are plenty of unanswered questions stilled ising this case, right -- still surrounding this case, right? >> reporter: that's right how did he get away? was he let go? did he escape? i called the cell phone number of the business owner that all started here at al's barbershop. we know there was a robbery here and we know there was a kidnapping. but how the kidnapper got away from an armed and dangerous man is still unknown. it all started at 3:15 yesterday afternoon. a man entered al's barbershop but he was not looking for a haircut. >> he entered the business, ordered the owner on the floor

and robbed him of the register and personal blockings, including a -- belongings, including car keys and a cell phone. >> reporter: as ford was returning, the man with the sawed-off shot gun and all of al's money and property was leaving. al spoke with us on the condition that we not record his face. >> at that point, he told the boy to get in the car, start the car up and drive him and he said if i made any move he would kill the son. >> reporter: al describes the son as a little brother and was extremely concerned for his safety. the suspect took off in the yukon. police have the car now and are processing it. the suspect is still on the loose. he's described as a 25-year-old black main, wearing a blue shirt, and a knitted cap.

again, many unquestions -- unanswered questions. one of the key witnesses in the bryan stow beating case has died. mathew lee was with stow the night he was attacked. according to the "l.a. times" lee died sunday from an allergic reaction to getting -- to eating nuts that are in a salad. it's not clear how his death might affect the prosecution's -- prosecution's case. meantime, yesterday, louie sanchez asked for his bail to be reduced. the judge postponed the request. yesterday, the prosecution also released new details of the attack. prosecutors say sanchez surprised stow from behind and punched him in the side of the head. stow's friends told authorities he immediately lost consciousness and fell to the ground. the small community of oakley is sending bills to

drivers who are under the influence and cause accidents that need an -- that need an emergency response. the amounts of the invoices are around $3 0 to $790. the costs are for breath, urine tests, the cost for analyzing the evidence, the cost of removing vehicles and for writing up reports. mills peninsula medical center has notified some of its patients, medical records have

been stolen. the hospital says it has fired an employee that stole the records on 1500 patients. only 15 contains is numbers and addresses. this theft was found in june but it occurred between 2009- 2010. mills says it doesn't appear the records were used to steal identity but they are offering to pay for a year of protection of their identities for anyone whose records were stolen. sergeant william died on sunday when insurgents bombed his vehicle in the province. he immigrated to san francisco from nicaragua when he was 10. he worked with at-risk kids after school. he served in iraq in 2008 before being deployed in afghanistan. a family friend cannot believe

is being praised this morning as a hero after rescuing a 3- year-old girl. her grandmother was in the -- her grandfather was in the water with her. one minute she was seen on his shoulders, the next thing, they were both under the water. >> i'm kind of proud. my mom and dad are prod of me -- brought of me. >> after that, a woman helped rescue the 69-year-old grandfather. he's still in the hospital in critical condition. the girl is now conscious and talking again. the search continues for sea lions entangled in san

francisco. rescuers have spent the last week looking for them. pg&e is continuing pipeline testing in wake of the san bruno disaster. it will soon take place in burlingame, san mateo and hillsborough. the testing involves filling a pipeline with water to look for leaks. a community meeting about the testing will take place at 5:30 tonight at the crystal springs golf course in burlingame. another meeting is set for tomorrow in san mateo. and "the chronicle" is reporting that a year-end deadline to test all 152 miles of its pipeline may not be reached. in fact, so far, only one- quarter of the 152 miles has been testified or replaced -- tested or replaced.

right now the dow is currently down 43, at 12,089. nasdaq is down 4.5. s&p is down almost 7. one of the reasons, there are new signs americans are spending less and saving more which is actually bad news for the economy. this morning, the commerce department reported spending fell 2/10. that's the biggest drop in two years. it comes as consumer prices are slipping slightly.

personal income inched up 1/10, the weakest increase since last november. in just a few minutes we're expecting to get a first report on july auto sales. we're hearing there will be a slight increase. but most consumers are worried about jobs and economies and are staying out of showrooms. ford is recalling their f- 150, f-250 and the lincoln pickup from model years 1997 to 2004. all of the recalled trucks were sold in cold-weather states where salt is used on the roads and that could destroy the metal strap that hopes the tanks in place. new legislation in congress could help those who have seen

their credit scores drop because of medical bills. a proposed bill would require the three major credit bureaus would remove forwards of medical debt within $2500 within 45 days of it being paid off. currently, a single medical debt can knock about 50 points from an average credit score, even -- even if the bet was paid off years ago. researchers found people with vascular risk factors had smaller brains and diminished brain function later in life. they are hoping the information will encourage people with the risk factors to seek treatment earlier. this morning, family members and friends are mourning the death of a young woman who died after falling 600 feet from

welcome back to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. it's tuesday august 2nd. we begin with developing news in the east ba. police have just informed us that two crime scenes in san leandro this morning are connected. allie rasmus, what have you found out? >> reporter: well, tori the two investigations are, in fact, row -- are, in fact, related. it started at 159th avenue. the area you see here behind this is blocked off. the alameda county sheriff's lieutenant said a man was shot

in this area this morning. he appeared to be running away from the driveway. let's go to newschopper2. what they found was a marijuana grow in the back yard of one of the homes here. now, the man who was shot running away from this home jumped into a car, according to police, three other people inside, and that car was stopped by sheriff deputies about a mile and a half away from here on westbound 580. the gunshot victim was taken to the hospital. he has non-life-threatening injuries. he was hit in the lower extremities. after that car was towed away, sheriff deputies returned to the home where the shooting happened and that's where they found the drugs at the scene. >> there's marijuana found down the driveway. there's marijuana plants growing outside. their relation to the shooting investigation is still unknown.
