news in oakland, a house caught fire at 3:00 this morning. paul chambers just arrived on the scene, paul? >> reporter: the house is up and around the corner from where we are. you really can't see it here but there are crews still here out on the scene in oakland hills. it was a two-alarm fire and if you can take a look at some video here, a family of three were inside the home and a fire broke out which was converted to a living space. they heard crackelling and saw an orange glow outside her window. she got her family out and that's when they saw the orange glow and the fire. >> my brother was with his girlfriend and they ate dinner with us so i don't know if my brother is still in there.

young. >> he survived by two children, ables 4 and 6. family members tell us he and his father were shouting and waving to the men on board the yacht but they never veered. it appears to be an accident and they plan to interview the father today. overnight, response to a hostage situation in sunny dale neighborhood, no hostages were ever found. they received a call shortly after 9:00 last night. the call you are told -- caller told him and said his relatives were being held hostage in his home. police were unable to reach them and brought in a s.w.a.t. team and crisis negotiators. at midnight they finally got ahold of the family, police searched the home and found no suspects and the incident is

still under investigation. two people are wanted in palo alto, both suspects are 18 years old from east palo alto. they are suspected for breaking into the school and stealing two mac book laptops. both have been recovered and three others schools have been burglarized and they are under investigation. it is 100-year-old city hall building following a bold crime. one man tried to steal huge brass railings from outside the entrance. it happened monday morning and there is clear evidence it was not successful. they found the railing ripped off its anchor bolts and on security tape it caught the crime in progress. >> he was ripping it back and

forth like this. i'm not sure what type of tool he used. >> reporter: they also plan to keep a close eye on other brass in other buildings around the state. >> he was going home without some of his cash and without some of his hair. the 34-year-old victim was walking at 10:00 monday night. a group of four to six men knocked him to the ground and stole some of his cash. one of the assailants took out a pocket knife and chopped off some of his hair. they are described as being in their 30s and wearing dark clothing. they are looking at designs for proposed cell phone antennas around the city. people are describing them as huge and unsightly. they sit on top of utility polls around the city.

no decision is expected to be made today. well the runways at san francisco airport will soon be longer. it is designed to reduce damage to planes should they over shoot the runway. all four will be extended and the airport spokesperson says construction will be completed by 2015. the work is not affected to affect flight. president barack obama is urging them to take time out of their vacation and 70,000 who are furloughed and are not being paid. it is costing them $30 million a day. democrats object to the funding

. an attempted murder charge has been dropped against a san francisco worker. he was accused of shooting a customer in the back last february. the two got into an argument after he kicked the victim's dog. he will now stand trial in assault and in an unrelated matter, the dog died after being run over pie a car. -- by is a car. over six police officers are accused of beating a homeless man to death. the july 5th incident was caught on cell phone video. 32-year-old thomas kelly suffered from schizophrenia. they are calling for the police chief to resign and the six officers are on unpaid leave.
