pictures this morning. i will show you what is going on on highway four. things are look pretty good. it's nice clear weather. you don't have to worry about visibility problems on your drive in from concord. this is a look at oakland commute northbound and southbound 880 that strong looks very nice coming through the main part of oakland. this morning if you are on 80 westbound let's say you are coming in from richmond, it is a very nice drive so far. all the way to the bay bridge toll plaza. let's go back to the desk. topping our news this morning san francisco police are investigating a hit and run that critically injured a nine- year-old boy. it happened last night. ktvu kraig debro has been talking with family members to a family member and witnesses and joins us from the scene. >> reporter: thanks, pam. in talking to the cause of the

nine-year-old boy he had ha cat scab and had no brain damage and expects the child to recover. according to the cousin of the nine-year-old -- they were crossing when it happened. the hit and run suspect is now in custody. police arrested him in hayward. it started at the intersection though. the cousin of the boy says the family was walking northbound. the driver was going eastbound. >> the nine-year-old was a little out ahead. i see to my right the guy come flying through a red light after dodging around a car that was waiting there and by the time i jumped back, he is hitting my cousin and knocking him into the car. >> reporter: he says his nine- year-old cousin was pinned briefly between the suspects vehicle and the parked vehicle. he didn't stop.

one of our witnesses said the suspect turned around and started back up mission in the westbound direction. sfpd put on the be on the lookout for a white toyota suv. hayward police spotted and stopped the vehicle. driver is being detained but their latest press release did not say if he is being arrested. multiple witnesses said he appeared to be intoxicated. this happened around 10:30. we have to check with pd to see what time the vehicle was stopped in hayward. the selloff continues for stock markets around the world this morning. right now most of the benchmarks across europe are down by more than 2%. overnight in asia most of the same. taiwan saw the biggest fall finishing the trading day off

more than 5.5% as investigators react to the steep drop on wall street. if you missed it, the dow jones dropped more than 500 points basically wiping out all of its gaining for the year so far. what happened? a lot of the concern about debt across europe. there is also a lot of concern about the continuing jobless rate here in the united states. there is more than -- more than 2.5 million people that will run out of their unemployment benefits by the end of the year. now this morning all eyes on the monthly jobs report for july. most analysts believe the u.s. gained between 75 and 90,000 jobs last month and the unemployment rate remained at 9.2%. that could be enough to ease panic. they add if the report is better than that, it could boost the markets today. right now the futures indicate a lower opening not a huge drop but a lower opening and that

now engineers believe moisture may have effected the entire circuit board. new this morning, a man is in custody for the stabbing death of a woman in san jose. police were called to an apartment just after 2:30 this morning. they say they immediately took a 48-year-old man into custody as a suspect. officers then entered the apartment and found a woman with multistab wounds. she was pronounced dead at the scene. police are still look for the motive. a search is under way for two men that tried to lure young children into their cars near gilroy's elementary school. it doesn't appear the two incidents are related at this point. they do say a man in his 20s tried to lure a young boy and two girls away from their home. a similar incident happened on

miller last week. here's a sketch of the suspect. 30 years old with a goatee and short balding his hair. his car is a dirty 1990s honda with a black roof and modified exhaust. fire investigators still don't know what caused five fires near train tracks. they say a freight train is likely responsible. the fire started yesterday in the town of knightsen. it burned mostly grass. neighbors received an emergency phone call ordering them to stay inside because of the smoke. >> east contra costa has been going through the same cuts as everyone else as other agency our district only has six engines on duty. we had to ask for a lot of help. >> one man lost a classic car

and heavy equipment. another neighbor lost 22 beehives worth as much as $1,000 each. family members of minh says his spirit won't be released until that boat is turned over. they were tossed into the bay after their boat collided with bigger boat preponderate father survived. he declined to talk to investigators yesterday. they didn't find any sign of drugs or alcohol on the yacht. the investigation could take several more weeks. a week after his death a friends of a long-time santa clause will host a wake. 69-year-old was found dead in his residential hotel room last friday. he was a long-time santa at the union square macy's until he

once again. inland will be warmer for the afternoon and our weekend very similar to what we have seen lately. imagine her surprise two s16 fighter jets intercepted a plane flown by a 75-year-old woman. when the jets intercepted the plane she turned around. the woman was flying the plane by herself and wasn't aware she was in restricted air space. today the senate will approve legislation to end a two-week partial shut down of the federal aviation administration. the shut down has cost the government $30 million a day in uncollected airline ticket taxes and sidelined 4,000 faa employees. because the senate is on vacation, the bill will be passed through a special procedure called anonymous consent. it's only a temporary funding extension through mid september. this morning president obama will outline a new

initiative to help unemployed military veterans find work. the proposal would give companies that hire an unemployedet van a $2500 tax credit. it would be higher for disabled veterans or forthose out of work for more than six months. serial killer ted bundy has been dead for 22 years now. now the fbi wants to find out if he is responsible for cold cases dating back to the early 1960s. today the fbi will enter bundy's dna profile into its index system. they built a profile from a vile of his blood found at at a florida evidence lab. he confessed to 30 murders before his 1989 execution. investigators long believed he is responsible for other deaths. a texas jury will begin deliberating today to decide the fate of a polygamist leader warren jeff.

he was convicted of child sexual assault charges. hi assaulted a 12-year-old girl and impregnated a 16-year-old. he acted has arizona own attorney during the trial and says he was a victim of religious prosecution. he faces up to life in prison. people living in oakland have launched a new campaign against the world's oldest profession. last night dozens marched through city streets determined to take back their streets from prostitutes. aggressive streetwalkers are destroying their neighbors and vow to call police the moment they see a prostitute hooking up with a customer. amber lee talked to one young woman who said she has no choice to work the streets. >> why are you doing this? >> pay the bills. >> reporter: how do you protect yourselves out here? >> that woman told us she is a 21-year-old single mom with no high school diploma or job skills. she has a part-time retail job

but that is not enough to support her children. a retired high school teacher is expected in court today after being accused of sexually abusing a student. the oakland tribune reports police arrested 72-year-old james reese on wednesday. investigators say he abused a former student at irvington high in fremont around a three- year span. he taught for ten years before retiring last year. he's facing several felony charges including sexual assault and kidnapping. police in palo alto have released photos of suspected gang members. cardenas and silva wanted for killings. last night the police chief held a town hall meeting to discuss this problem.

however, some community members are concerned that police the police response may be causing even more problems. >> you cannot allow these police officers coming from different jurisdictions coming into east palo alto and the east palo alto police department pulling people over due to the war on drugs. >> we had a spike on violence. you responded. we responded. we have a lot more things to do. >> there have been six homicides in east palo alto this year. right now the time is 4:49 and more oakland police officers could rejoin the department than previously thought. ktvu was there on monday as chief anthony bass welcomed 25 police officers. eight more officers are set to return in the weeks ahead. that is according to the oakland tribune. chief bass tells the paper that there are signs that the application for a grant could
