well, good morning to you. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori cam be. it's friday, august 5th. wall street is reacting positively to the new jobs report fromup. the dow jumped 150 point -- from july. the dui jumped 150 points -- the dow jumped 150 points. allie rasmus is live with more. and this comes after the massive drop. >> reporter: that's right. within the first five minutes of the opening bell, we saw the dow go up 150 points. but since then, it's come down quite a bit. taking a look at the trading floor of the san francisco offices of the new york stock exchanges, just in the last few minutes we've been seeing and hearing some -- a lot of activity, some explanations,

some shouting going on, people running across the floor. as run broker told me the hope here this morning was a relatively positive jobs report was going to stop the bleeding that happened yesterday. it was the worst day in two years, with a -- with a 500- point drop. the labor report added that employers added about 17,000 jobs. but traders and brokers here -- they are not able to talk to us this morning. they are really in the thick. things are really busy. >> this is an incredible economy. it's very resilient. so i think as long as you can get some of the entitlements under control, we'll be fine. >> reporter: and just another update, the nasdaq's down about

injured a 9-year-old baseball fan from philadelphia. it happened at mission and new montgomery shortly after the little boy last last night's giants/phillies' game. kraig debro has more. >> reporter: good morning, this is mission and this is new montgomery crossing you right here. now according to the family members, they were crossing mission street going northbound. according to a cousin of the 9- year-old boy, whose name is ryan white, the family is visiting philadelphia. they just attended the game and the boy is a huge fan of the team. >> gee. >> yeah. hayward. >> from the time i jumped, he's hitting my cousin and knocking him into the car. >> reporter: the initial report came in around 10:30, the family who is crossing the street, ryan who is 9. mr. woody hootenned a the parents of the -- hooten and the parents of the boy, and one of the witnesses we have say the driver turnedded around to survey -- turned around too survey the damage -- to survey the damage. somebody got a license plate number and they put out on all points bulletin. the suspect was stopped in hayward. they did a breathalyzer that we spoke to said he appeared to be

intoxicated. woody's cousins say the result result -- the results of the cat scan are back now and that ryan -- those tests were ryan. he doesn't believe ryan has any brain damage so he will be able to make up a good recovery to say the least. reporting live in san francisco, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you. 7:05. police in mountain view say a very brave 15-year-old boy scared off some armed robbers but they are not recommending how he did it. they say he was visiting a friend when his friend's father came home. three robbers followed the man inside. one of them had an automatic weapon. as those robbers couple offed with the father, the teenagers picked up a bb gun and pointed his weapon. the robbers then backed out of that apartment. police tried to track counsel the robbers with police dogs.

they did pick up a scent but they later lost it. a confirmation from the governor of chile is raising the reward money. the man was walking with his fiancee when two men confronted him ated ady lied and emerson -- adddy lied and emerson -- adelied and emmerrer isn't. the reward is -- and emerson. the reward is now $20,000. 39-year-old richard shueman of santa rosa was first arrested for allegedly pushing and choking his wife on july 19th. he posted bail but was arrested again on july 26th for violating a restraining order. his wife says he wanted her to

recant statements about the first incident. shueman is out on bail again but is also on -- but is also on administrative leave. a preliminary hearing is set for august 18th. police in her due lease are investigating a hate crime. sara davis said she went to her car and found a two-foot wide swastika carved into the wood of her toyota prius. police say they know of no other recent hate crimes in the neighborhood. they are asking anyone with information to give them a call. >> jean -- oakland's mayor jean quan is willing to discuss a teen curfew. an though any batts has been asking for this curfew ever since he took office. the city of oakland, they've

never had such a curfew -- and such a curfew. authorities in the east bay are trying to figure out how a 21-year-old inmate escaped from the courthouse e was in a private holding area -- courthouse. he was in a private holding area where he was able to sneak away from deputies and escape. he was found three hours later near his home in hayward. this was about ten miles away. officers want to know if this mistake was because of -- because of a human error or some type of design in the courthouse courthouse. let's check in with sal. >> let's go to the bad part.

shows veterans are still having a much harder time finding jobs. in about 45 minutes, president obama will unveil some sweeping new initiatives to try to help him. alison burns is live in our washington, d.c. newsroom with the challenge he is issuing employers across the country. >> reporter: that's right. president obama will be directly challenging u.s. companies to hire 100,000 unemployed hearts or their spouses in the next two years. and he's proposing a big incentive. it's called the returning heroes hiring tax credit. $2400 for employers who hire a veteran who has been unemployed for just a few months. $9600 to hire a long-term unemployed or disabled veteran. we learned this morning the unemployment rate for veterans is 13.3%. that's more than 4 percentage points higher than the

unemployment rate nationwide. >> this should be a shock to everyone. 300,000 veterans who served in afghanistan and iraq are unemployed. >> we'll have live coverage in about an hour. breaking news. just within the past ten minutes, we found out the u.s. senate approved legislation to end a two-week partial shut down of the federal aviation administration. now, that shut down has cost the government about $30,000 a day in taxes. it's also furloughed workers, including right here in the bay area. this is a temporary funding extension, only through the middle of september. well, republicans on

morning's jobs report. >> good morning. certainly investors around the world watched as our opening bell rang around about -- rang about and hour ago. [ opening bell ] >> after the 500-point drop many looked for the selling to continue but had this morning's monthly unemployment report was a welcomed surprise. more jobs were created last month than economists expected. and surprisingly the unemployment rate dropped to 9.1%. on that news, the dow shot up about 150 points. but that did not last long. if you look at today's chart, it really look the more like a richter scale. weigh want to know how we're doing. right now, the dow jones is up about 3 points. it has been down, though, in the last half-hour. now you can see it's turning down again. a lot of this volatility has to

do with the job market. the volatility in the markets and the number of people continued out of work continue to hurt consumer confidence which in turn means people are not spending money and, of course, consumer spending accounts for about two-thirds of economic activity. a lot of volatility continues. we went to the stock exchange to hear from the pros, what they are saying, they are saying, yes, we have a little bit of good news.

but overall, the economic picture's not changed and it's not very good. back to you. >> thank you, pam. overnight news at 7:32. san jose police are very busy investigating an early-morning stabbing death of a woman. jade hernandez is live at the apartment building where this happened and you've been talking with neighbors. >> reporter: we have. we're learning a lot from neighbors, dave. we're live. you can see police are still out here this morning, a neighbor told us that the woman killed and the man taken into custody right here at the complex new each other and moved into the complex recently. police are not saying much about this investigation right now. they have said that officers arrived to find a woman stabbed to death inside an apartment around 2:30. officers arrested a man found outside. we just spoke to a woman who lives two apartments away from the deadly stabbing took place. here's what neighbors had to say about their this morning. >> there was screaming of noen,

the argument could escalate so fast. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:34. new this morning, police say an 84-year-old woman drove her car into the lobby of a vallejo bank. it happened yesterday at the u.s. bank at tennessee and amador streets. we took this video of the crash scene just a few minutes ago. police say there were about 20 people in the bank at the time of the accident. one person was seriously hurt. two others suffered minor injury. it's still not clear what led up to the crash. police are trying to decide whether to cite the driver. people living in oakland have launched a new campaign against the world's oldest profession. last night dozens marched, determined to take back their streets from prostitutes.

national average. in its first press conference as defense secretary, leon panetta reacted to the deep cuts mandated by the debt deal passed by congress. he says his department can deal with the $400 billion in cuts in the deal but he warranted against a further wound of -- round of cuts that would kick in if a special committee cannot come up with other ways to result the deficit. >> if it did happen again, it would result in a further -- in a further round of very dangerous cuts, cuts that would do much damage to our security, our troops and their families

as allie rasmus tells us live now, most of the gains are gone. it's been up and down and alley, what do you know now? >> reporter: well, it's been a roller coaster ride out here. we're on the san francisco trading floor of the new york stock exchanges office in the -- stock exchanges office. you can see and hear a lot of activity. there's a lot of traders out here. they are monitoring the situation closely just within the last ten or 15 minutes we've heard a lot of shouts of excitement and i spoke to one of the analysts and he said when the market opened, the general mood was one of apprehension. the dow had a bad day with the drop. now, today, in the first half- hour after the opening bell at

6:30. the dow shot up about 150 points. it's just been see sawing up and down -- see-sawing you and down since then. and as of right now, the dow is down about 40 minutes. nasdaq is also down, about 20 minutes. this is in spite of the relativery positive news that came ut -- relative -- of the relatively positive news that came out. corporate profits are up but unemployment is still high. despite the labor report, the reality is a lot of people are still out there looking for work. >> you -- you see this 9% unemployment, you see slow growth in the unemployment. >> reporter: now the

icu. i just went in there to try to get information about his condition. i have some informs information. i just talked with dangerfield and he says the suspect is 21 years old. i don't know a city or an address. he also said in addition to ryan white there was another person injured during the hit hit and run this all happened around 10:30. he says a white suv and we've just learned it was a pickup truck, a toyota tundra, ran the light, hit the vehicle and the collision pinned the boy against a parked car for a while. without backing up suv continued eastbound on mission. >> he was not sober and he -- he came back around to the scene of the crime obviously

american companies to employ 100,000 veterans and their spouse the next few years. he's offering big incentives. mike mullin is making opening comments, and president obama will be speaking any moment now talking about this morning's labor department report and the stubbornly high unemployment rate for veterans. it's at 13.3% more than 4 percentage points higher than the unemployment rate. to try to turn that return, president obama is proposing a tax credit. $2400 for hiring veterans out of work for a few months. $9600 to hire a long-term unemployed or disabled veteran. president obama will also be announcing a new traffic stores to help veterans transfer the training and skills they learned from the military into jobs in the private sector.

million private sector jobs in all. we have to create more jobs than that each month to make up for the more than $800 -- for the more than million jobs the recession created. we need to build a several- cycle when the companies are growing and the economy is growing. we know that. that will take some time. what i want the american people around parters in around the world to know is this -- we're going to get through this. things will get better. the process was delayed. if we want our businesses to have the confidence they need to get cash off the sidelines an invest and hire, and we gotta do better than that.

20 minutes ago. we can show you that there's some officers out on the scene. you can see the apartment in question where this deadly stabbing happened last night. you can see it's still roped up and some officers are down the way. we're live at the kylie park apartments in san jose. a neighborhood told us the young woman killed and the -- and the man taken into custody now each other. officers arrived to find a woman stabbed to death inside an apartment around 2:30 this morning. officers arrested a 48-year-old man found outside without issue. we spoke to a neighbor and she said she called 911 but wish she could have done more. here's how she described what she heard. >> heard a bunch of -- you know, just commotion, commotion

found him about three hours later, year his home in hayward, about ten miles away. officers are trying to determine if his escape was due to human error or a design flaw in the courthouse so they can prevent this from happening again. in sonoma county, a chp officer is out of jail after being arrested twice for charges of domestic violence. 39-year-old richard shueman of santa rosa was first arrested for allegedly pushing and choking his wife on july 19th. now he posted bail but was arrested again on july 26th for violating a restraining order. his wife says he wanted -- he wanted her to recant statements about that first incident. shueman is out on bail again but he's also on leave from his job. a preliminary hearing is set for august 18th. police at hercules are investigating what they are calling a hate crime against a jewish woman. sara david said she went to her car wednesday morning and found

amadore streets. police say there was were -- there were about 20 people in the bank. one person was seriously hurt. two others suffered minor injuries. just a couple of months -- moments ago vallejo police gave us new details about the crash. >> the driver had mistakenly put her foot on the gas instead of the brake. again, she's 84. so she was confused and crashed through the doors and a pillar -- pillar. >> police are deciding whether to cite her. it's possible she could lose her driver's license. a retired teacher was in court. he was arrested on wednesday -- wednesday. investigators say he abused a former student at irvington high for three years.

norton taught there. norton faces seven felony charges, including sexual assault and kidnapping. a trial is now underway for six people involved in a shooting on a bus in philadelphia. surveillance videos were presented as evidence in the courtroom yesterday. one woman said it all started when he hit sized a woman on the bus for spanking her child. she said she then made a phone call, got off and that's where two men opened gunfire. 13 shots were fired but no one was hit. police in palo alto have released photos for two suspected gang members wanted for questioning in recent homicides. the two men are suspected in two killings in east palo alto and one in colorado. those killings in east palo alto follow a very violent year in that city. last night the chief police

a british tourist was fatally mauled by a polar bear in norway. four others were hurt. a helicopter had to be flown in. the men were part of a tour group of about 80 people. one person in the group shot and killed the bear after the attack. there have been warnings about these bear attacks after several were spotted in the area. a sonoma county man attacked by a pig has been released from the hospital.
