off again. >> reporter: hayward police arrested vargas an hour later. san francisco police say he tested over the legal limit for alcohol. ktvu has learned vargas just graduated from a business administration degree from cal state and is enrolled in graduate courses there for the fall. >> he's a really good guy. so i am actually very shocked. >> reporter: at san francisco county jail today john paul newan told us vargas' parents asked him to visit his son. >> his parents, you know live in mexico city. sent him away to college to the u.s. so you know he doesn't have too many friends up in the bay area so i am glad that his family considers me as one of his good friends. vargas has been booked under felony hit and run. he's under psychiatric observation in the jail. learn what his friend says vargas was doing in san francisco before he allegedly hit those two people and fled

the scene. david stevenson, ktvu news. the giant-philly game is set to start in about two hours. an enthusiastic bunch of fans from the philadelphia area are here for the game. but cheering on their team has become almost secondary after the crash last night that critically injured 9-year-old ryan white. coming up you will hear from san francisco mayor ed lee and from philadelphia phillies manager charlie manuel who has a message for the white family. the search is on for a boy kidnapped. you may have seen the amber alerts. the child was abducted in atascadero. janine de la vega is live there now at the command center. janine police say the suspected kidnapper left a note behind. >> reporter: that's right, she did leave a clue and right now police are here on the scene

when sheriff's deputies are standing by. this is the area, one of the areas where they searched. they've been searching all day for 4-year-old jeremy guthrie. they came up empty-handed. it all went urpd under way at the baptist church that also serves as a homeless shelter. this woman 53-year-old annette hail kidnapped him last night or early yesterday morning. authorities say hail had an argument with the boy's mother. when his mother woke up she left a rambling note under his pillow. >> at 7:30 the alarm was triggered which at point in time a witness was reported to have heard a little boy say i don't want to go or something similar to that. >> reporter: a statewide amber alert was issued. police do not believe that hail

has access to a car and that she may be using public transportation. today close to 70 police officers, sheriff's deputies, the chp and fbi searched on foot and in the air. they did a good search of the entire city focusing on vacant houses and abandoned lots since hail is known to frequent those types of areas. roughly 100 volunteers also joined this massive search handing out flyers. hail does have a criminal record which is mostly petty theft and domestic violence charges. they believe she has a history of mental illness which is why they believe jeremy guthrie could be in grave danger. she's a white female, she has a darker complex. she's 5'5-inches tall. 200pounds and she is known to wear her hair in a bun. now police and sheriff's deputies say they plan on conducting a search until 9:00 p.m. tonight when it gets dark. they say if they still come up empty-handed they plan on starting back up again at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning.

reporting live from atascadero, janine de la vega, ktvu news. it was a wild ride on wall street as investors bought and sold setting a record place for 2011. more than 8 billion shares changed hands. the most since may of last year. the markets ended on a mixed note with the dow up 60 points. the nasdaq down 23. ktvu consumer editor tom vacar has been talking to traders here in the bay area and has their perspective on this wild ride, tom. >> reporter: the question becomes is the stock market in place for you to put this? the dow jones industrial average widely whip sawed up as much as 70 points down as much adds 200. >> the market opened higher, crashed down lower been the first hour.then it rallied back, then had another crash

and then we closed up. >> reporter: to the bad big jitters continue over the shaky u.s. economy. yesterday's mini crash scared a lot of investors to sell. today there were bargains to be had. >> a lot of people are saying, wait a minute, these are great value is. v alue -- values. we would have bought them at current levels, these are great buys. >> reporter: and they bought them. >> yeah that's what happened. we still have a long way to climb. >> there's a lot of low price stocks out there but there's also a lot of fear that we could be going lower. >> reporter: two women who we randomly met on the street talked about that fear. >> the average person is not putting their money in stocks. it's probably trying to figure out if they can put it in a sock at home or something. >> maybe we have to put our money under the mattress or something. it's probably just as good to put it there as long as you have a good lock on your door.

>> reporter: there's also the coffee can, the hole in the wall or the refrigerator. over the long haul the market pays of course you have to have the fortitude. consumer editor, tom vacar, ktvu news. there was better news for americans looking for work. the labor department says employers added 117,000 new jobs this month. the unemployment rate also edged down just slightly dropping from 9.2% to 9.1%. president obama welcomed the new jobs numbers today he spoke at an event. president obama said america needs to create more jobs to make up for the jobs lost during the recession. he also outlined a number of steps to get americans working again. >> extending the payroll tax credit put $1,000 in the pockets of the workers.

putting construction workers back to work rebuilding america. >> reporter: the president urged members of congress to make those initiatives a priority when they return from their summer recess. among all this volatile economic news, researchers searchers report a surge in anti depressant drugs. there's particularly attention being paid to those doctors writing those prescriptions. michelle bachmann campaigned in iowa telling voters she is not afraid to stand up for herself. >> behind this dress is a titanium spine. i developed that spine growing up with three brothers and no sisters. >> reporter: bachmann also said

that the stocks decline was a stinky deal. former minnesota governor tim pawlenty was in mason city today. >> barack obama promised hope and change, and now people are wondering, they're hoping they don't lose their house or have to change their address. it's getting that bad. pawlenty trailing his republican opponents on the polls. but says it's not too late. will he or won't he. the head of san francisco police union says lee may announce on monday if he will run for mayor. his tone has changed recently. david stevenson asked the mayor this morning about the possibility of entering the race. >> i am meeting family this weekend. i've got a lot of people to talk with about this decision. and i look forward to it. >> the deadline for candidates to enter the race is august 12th. the field is crowded with more than 30 people seeking san

francisco's top office at city hall. it took less than 30 seconds today for the senate to resolve the two week faa shut down and sent thousands of people back to work. >> no objection. hearing no objection. so order. >> reporter: congress is technically on summer break but the senate used a procedure that did not require lawmakers to be present to cast their votes. they approved a house passed measure to temporarily extend funding for the faa. the shutdown affected more than 200 airports nationwide. that includes a new air traffic control tower under construction at oakland and projects at sfo to refurbish a taxi way. passengers were rerouted from philadelphia after they found a threatening note. the plane was isolated on the tarmac and the tsa asked the 157 passengers and six crew members to get off and wait in

the terminal while security crews checked the plane. the fbi is in charge of this case and is not comments on the specifics of the threat. this is chicago's o'hare airport. passengers had to evacuate from the plane while a tire caught fire while landing. american says it's working with the ntsb and faa to determine a cause. authorities say a 65-year- old woman from northern california is the only person to die from tainted ground turkey. sacramento county health officials released the victim's age and sex late yesterday but not her name or when she died. a salmonella outbreak that has sickened 77 people has been linked to ground turkey produced by cargill. the company was asked to recall 36 million pounds of meat. we are just getting breaking news into our newsroom. we have just learned that the 4- year-old who was reported missing, kidnapped from

breaking news coming into the newsroom. we just learned minutes ago a 4- year-old little boy kidnapped from a shelter in atascadero has just been found. let's go to janine de la vega live in atascadero. this is true janine? tell us about the little boy. >> reporter: just minutes ago police came to us and said they found him. this is very good news. we're going to get the scoop from the police chief himself. this is chief steve gisselle

with atascadero police department. tell us what did you find out? >> reporter: we've been looking for little jeremy all day long today. we have over 100 volunteers and about 65, 70 law enforcement officers from across the country including the fbi: just minutes ago we received an update that apparently the suspect somehow garnered a cell phone and called police. apparently realizing that we were looking for her actively. and let us know where little jeremy was and he, he ended up being in an abandoned ford dealingship in town in atascadero. he was located there inside the building alone. he's now being medically cleared. >> reporter: do we know his condition or how he's doing? >> the word i have is he seems to be in good health and that's really. this just came across we're still flushing all that out. >> and where's the, the suspect

anette hail right now? >> annette hail is still missing. she does have an arrest warrant with a $100 million bail. >> reporter: the search is still on for this suspect anette hail. i asked the chief right before we went on the air if jeremy's mother even knows since this is breaking news. they're not sure if she knows. they're about to break the news to her. we believe she is still inside the church behind me the first baptist church which also serves as a homeless shelter and that's where he was kidnapped from. but good news, 4-year-old jeremy guthrie has been found. >> thank you, janine. a contra costa county man says he's counting his blessings tonight even though he lost some prized possessions last night during a grass fire.

david stevenson says that it could have been worse. >> reporter: he's grateful because had the fire gone just a few more feet away it could have been a lot worse. >> but you can see the fire was just so fast and so hot. that it was just a miracle that it didn't get over into here. >> reporter: just after 1:30 yesterday afternoon, fire crews were notified there were five fires burning along these railroad. although the cause is still unknown. just before the fire broke out a freight train had just passed through the area. daryl hardy was at a local store when he got a call to come hope. >> the breeze runs east, if the breeze would have gotten these willows it would have burned the whole house. >> reporter: including his business. hardy runs a farm with 200 chickens, he also runs this

stand. hardy immediately jumped on his tractor to create fire breaks. >> once i got here out here on the tractor, the bees were gone. i knew that was a lost cause. >> reporter: and across these tractor, bill bradley lost his classic car and heavy equipment that he uses for his hauling business. still with all of this destruction, hardy is extremely grateful. >> very fortunate it didn't get to the willows and it didn't harm no one. no one was hurt. >> reporter: and hardy brought containment boxes for the bees to live in for the meantime. he plans to bring bees back. san jose police say a fatal stabbing early this morning was a result of domestic violence. the man himself called 911 around 2:30 a.m. from the park kealy luxury

apartments. neighbors say they heard the couple fighting then the woman pleading with the man not to hurt her. police arrived and found the woman stabbed to death. police arrested the man who appears to be her boyfriend. >> there was a relationship between the two, so we're calling it a domestic homicide. vallejo police say an 84- year-old woman smashed her car into the lobby of a bank yesterday afternoon. it happened at the us bank branch at tennessee and amador streets. police says there were about 20 people inside the bank. one person was seriously hurt. two others suffered minor injuries. >> the driver had mistakingly put her foot on the gas instead of the break. again she's 84 years old so she was confused. and crashed through the doors and through a pillar. >> reporter: vallejo police are now trying to decide whether to file charges against the driver. it's also possible she could lose her driver's license.

yesterday here at 5:00, our chief meteorologist told us to expect a warm up and it really kicked in today. >> it was very noticeable at the beach and now at the coastline where it was cool with a lot of fog. mostly in the inland bay valleys, five to 10 degrees warmer. there's still fog at the coast. certainly word has been, that is the fog footprint for the afternoon the last week or so. you can see it already stretching across the bay and making it's way toward berkeley. that's an indication. despite the warm up today we're going to see a big push of fog again tonight. if you're out at the ballpark. heading out to the ballpark watching the giants play it's going to be cool out there. there's how it looked this afternoon. you did see some clearing a little bit of white fog in the distance. the fog a big player in the forecast the next couple of days. if you're going to the ball game tonight, they're playing all weekend out there. patchy fog and breezy with temperatures just in the upper 50s. it's going to be a cool one. if you watch any of the games

u.s. soldiers will soon get a break from those long deployments. soldiers have been on a constant cycle of deployment with short stints at home. during that time the rates of divorce, suicide and drug use soared. president obama says he's welcoming returning heros and helping hundreds of veterans find work. >> right now we spend a long time preparing them for service, but we spend less time

returning them to work. >> president obama is helping returns veterans. the president said u.s. companies need to value the experience of veterans. mr. o obama also said he wants to give private-sector incentives. companies that hire unemployed veterans will receive a $2,400 break on their taxes. that would jump to $4,800 for hiring veterans who have been out of work six months or longer. and $9,600 for a wounded warrior. a disabled vet. finally the president threw down the gauntlet to firms, he

to watch his team was hit in a hit and run. we'll get back to that story. but we have breaking news. the woman who kidnapped a 4- year-old boy has been arrested. we told you just 15 minutes ago that jeremy was found after hail called police to tell them that he was at an abandoned car dealership. the young boy jeremy is said to be fine. in just the past few minutes we learned that hail was found just a short time after the boy was located. this is a live look at the scene, that is the church where the shelter is located. this is where the boy, his mother and hail were staying. our janine de la vega is live at the scene. you see there police talking with crews. she's going to have an update for us on all these new developments coming up in about 30 minutes on ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00.

now to the breaking story we had for you last night. tonight there's an outpouring of support for a boy that was hit in a hit and run. mike mibach spoke to the manager of phillies who has a special manager for ryan. >> reporter: the crowd already starting to gather here outside the ballpark at second and king for game two of this four game set. tonight we had philly fans including ryan white who came to watch his team. they are philly fanatics, die hard that are outside the ballpark. and they say they are pulling for fellow fanatic ryan white and so too is the philly skipper. >> if you travel from philadelphia to l.a. to see them play you have to be

a fanatic. i would like for someone to bring him around and let me meet him sometime. >> news traveled pretty well. i'm not surprised families come out here. my family would always travel. it's a shame that would have to happen to a fan. >> reporter: his cousin spoke to ktvu this morning about the incident. >> from the time i jumped back, he was hitting my cousin and knocking him into the car. >> it is tragic. i think it is a hit and run. >> reporter: san francisco mayor ed lee said he was hoping to visit the young boy at the hospital. >> people have to, just have to be more responsible for this to turn into a criminal element. it's not just an accident, someone was fleeing the incident. that's just horrible. >> reporter: tonight it was a sentiment being expressed by both philly and giant fans. >> it's a shame. it's too bad we do not control these drunk drivers a little bit better. >> reporter: the giant's organization says it will have a moment of acknowledgment for

ryan white before the game. as for the case involving giant fan bryan stow the suspect in his beating are due in court next wednesday. stow remains hospitalized with a brain injury. earlier this week he underwent a scan and mri. the suspects on the screen here louie sanchez and marvin norwood face mayhem and other charges. sanchez requested his bail be reduced that issue will be taken up at the arraignment for both men which is scheduled for next week. opponents of the smart meters have launched an effort against the sheriff's. the group called stop meters said the sheriff is not doing enough to enforce the ban. the utility is also moving forward with a plan to allow customers to opt out of having the meters installed. this was graduation day at the san francisco fire academy. and as ktvu's jade hernandez

reports it was a long time coming. >> reporter: this was the first graduating class of new recruits since 2005. last year 70 firefighters retired. as important as this was to the fire department, it was the personal for maryland bart. >> a lot of people wanted to be where i am right now and i feel extremely lucky. >> reporter: how proud are you of your mother today? >> this much. >> reporter: there was pride, the former 911 dispatcher knew she had to find a way to in her words earn a coveted spot with the department. >> i came in contact with a lot of sf firefighters that came through our department. and just seeing how much they enjoyed their job, how much they love their job, they always had smiles on their faces. they were so excited about what they were doing. and that prompted the urge to do this a long time ago for me. >> reporter: san francisco fire chief white says this class of graduates is special for

several reasons. there's five women, graduates age in range from early 20s to one firefighters who is 50. and this is the first time in six years 35 new recruits have left the academy. the chief refers to staffing levels at lean. she would like 100 or so more but what she's focusing on today is the positive. >> very diverse backgrounds from people who worked in retail, people that are were accountants. people who worked in civil engineering. but my feeling is that they are all valuable to the department. and people who are bilingual. >> each recruit had to complete 14 rigorous weeks of training. in san francisco, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. the peace corp. today condemned alleged sexual abuse by one of its volunteers. authorities arrested jesse osmond yesterday in connecticut on federal charges of sexually abusing children. he molested five girls under

the age of 6 at a center that helps aids victims. the peace corp. says it supports vigorous prosecution of osmond. warren jeffs walked out of his sentencing hearing this morning in protest. cameras were not allowed in court when jeffs read a statement he said was from god. he faces a sentence of life in prison. the judge ordered two lawyers who had been jeff's stand by council to represent him and the hearing continued. we have more breaking news to tell you about. this is concerning the economy. credit rating agency s & p has downgraded the u.s. debt from triple a. that is the first downgrade in u.s. history. this news just crossing the wires. there's concern that could affect consumers interest rates from everything from housing, to new car loans to credit cards. it's not clear when that will happen. but america's credit rating has been downgraded from s & p

retailers hope that busy businesses pick up as children are getting ready to go back to school. families will spend an average of $360 on back to school shopping this year. retailers say they usually get 16% of their annual income during this sales period. honda is recalling 1.5 million vehicles in the united states because of an issue with the transmission. the recall affects 2007 to 2010 crvs. elements and four cylinder accord. the company said today a transmission shaft bearing can be damaged when the car is shifted too quickly. honda says no injuries or deaths have been recorded because of this problem. if you have a 2008 chrysler mini van you will want to listen to this. the company has issued a second recall for more than 360,000 of

those mini vans. chrysler says the dodge caravan air bags may deploy unexpectedly. chrysler wants to expect and replace those chips. there is word from the web tonight that apple has gotten a preliminary injunction against two business in new york. details are scarce but computer world.com reports the case appears to involve trademark infringement. possibly the same problems raised with those counter fit stores in china. the judge has scheduled a hearing on the matter on august 12th. older men and women appear to have different views about the benefits of exercise. researchers at baylor university studied 38 adults. none had exercised regularly before the study. men said they were more

them and injurying four others. someone then shot and killed the bear. this happened earlier today. a string of violence between norway and the north pole. about 80 people were camped in tents as part of a group from british school expedition. according to the father of one of the injured students. trip wires were supposed to fire bullets and scare off any bears. >> this time it didn't happen apparently. and one of the other chaps came out with a rifle and tried to kill the polar bear and didn't do it. and this leader then tried to kill the polar bear. and just before he killed it apparently the polar bear mauled him and he's real little really bad. >> reporter: two of the four injured teens are in serious condition. let's turn our thoughts back now to our bay area weather.

>> it's going to be a great weekend. much like the weather we had the last few weeks. the fog at the cost. the mild to warm temperatures inland. but not 90s, it's 80s. we go outside because there's lots of low clouds and marine layer to talk about. it's already at the mouth of the golden gate bridge. at the ballpark right now it's kind of breezy. the giants are playing the phillies tonight. it's going to be a bit chilly. they were warmer and significantly warmer than yesterday. as much as 10 degrees warmer. temperatures tomorrow about the same maybe a slight bit cooler in some places. the forecast for the weekend and more of the same. you know a lot of fog and low cloud early morning clearing. then a little bit of warming next week. none of this is huge. so tomorrow morning, and really through the weekend saturday and sunday morning: there's your fog. as you get into the afternoon both saturday and sunday because of this guy, we're going to see a good strong sea breeze up to 25 miles per hour

and just mild inland temperatures. this has been a dominant weather feature in our west coast weather for the last eight months. maybe everyone longer. i haven't gone back that far but this is doing all of the cooling and keeping the fire danger along, keeping the air quality real good. it's also keeping temperatures certainly on the lower ends. there's your coverage in the morning. back to the coast like today. it'll burn back quickly like it did yesterday. you're starting to see reds in the valley. you see the greens and blues along much of the bay. those yellows are 70s and 80s in the orange. you're kind of up out of it when you're in clear lake. fairfield you're out there too in the mid-80s. 76 in vallejo. in the bay, you see how much cooler it is. once you hop over those hills it gets warm. not hot it gets warm. you can take these temperatures, they're going to be warm on saturday. sunday a few degrees cooler.

this is a photo of myrtle rose and her late husband william. 75-year-old myrtle said she thought the two f16 jets circling her plane thought they wanted to check out her plane. she didn't know that the president was present and the air space had been shutdown.
