good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. it's saturday, august 6th. a very foggy morning in parts of the bay area today. let's checks in with rosemary for a look at how it will shape up. >> good morning. in addition to that fog out there, we have drizzle once again. and i wish i could say we've got changes in store, but little change we're going to be very similar to how we were yesterday. so starting with the am clouds this morning, we'll be clearing back to the coast. forecasted highs just like what we saw for our friday afternoon, upper 50s, low 60s for the coast, some of our warmest areas only hitting the low 80s, which means we'll be struggling to warm near normal again. we do have an eventual warm-up in the forecast. we'll show you if we'll see if in time nor the weekend coming up. we start with news from afghanistan, u.s. government officials say 31 u.s. special operations forces were killed after the helicopter they were in was attacked.

it happened in the province the taliban is already claiming responsibility, saying it brought down the helicopter with a rocket. nato confirmed the overnight attack and added that there was enemy activity in that area. nato is still investigating the cause as the recovery operation at the site is now underway. this morning's attack makes it the highest number of american casualties recorded in a single incident in a war now approaching the 10-year mark. in our economy watch, we are following reaction to standard & poors decision to downgrade the country's credit rating. the credit agency maid the announcement last night, saying the debt deal passed by congress doesn't go far enough to address the country's debt problem. s&p also said it's pessimistic about congress and the administration bridging political differences to handle the debt. overnight asian leaders reacted cautiously. >> the downgrade is really a

lose-lose situation. the u.s. suffers and asia suffers too. we downgrade and interest rate we have to rise because that's now a plus, it's not triple m anymore. >> s&p is one of major three credit rating agent significance the other two said they plan to keep their triple- a rating for the united states. the credit downgrade could increase interest rates on everything from mortgages to credit cards. rise in credit card interest rates would affect shoppers. economists also warn that inflation could go up making a shopping spree more expensive even if you don't use credit. >> we all do better than we think we're doing, in terms of how we live in our lifestyles. maybe that just needs to come down a bit. >> the u.s. credit downgrade is likely to compact consumer confidence. a survey shows it increased in

july after going down the month before. s&p cited political gridlock between republican and democratic lawmakers as one reason for the credit downgrade. and in this morning's online video address, president obama called on congress to work even closer after its summer recess. >> both parties share responsibility for our progress. moving our economy and our country forward is not a democratic or a republican responsibility. it is our responsible as americans. >> the president taped this online video address yesterday, before news of the credit downgrade was released. congress has never been more unpopular. that according to a poll from the new york times that shows 82% of americans now disapproval of the way congress is handling its job. only 14% approve. in regard to the recent debt ceiling debate, 72% of those polled disapprove with the way republicans handled negotiations, while 66%

disapprove of the way democrats handle the negotiations. at a time when some parents are struggling to make ends meet, some bay area schoolchildren are getting a little help as they prepare for the first day of school. ali rasmus joins us from san francisco, where they're preparing for school supply giveaway today. and this comes at a good time, doesn't it? >> that's right, because school supplies are more expensive according to a survey from huntington bank. the cost of school supplies for kids through k through 6th grade is about 12% more than a year ago. for middle schoolers it's 25% compared to a year ago. but today's school supply giveaway is organized by the salvation army in san francisco. you can see they've got their backpacks set up here. they'll be giving this out to 1500 kids p if you look inside you can see some of the supplies they have. they've got folders, notebooks, ruler, glue stick. but they've also got some other types of school supplies, the not so traditional stuff, stuff that is just as essential. laney is the spokesperson for the salvation army.

what kind of stuff are the kids getting that they need? >> we've got backpacks pre- filled with up to 14 different items as essential basics they need for back-to-school. in addition, we're seeing that schools are now requiring kids have things like flash drives, so we are providing those to the kids as well. in addition to a payless gift card. so kids can go back to school with good new shoes and 3 everybody likes new shoes for school, that sorts of thing. >> how get is the need to now compared to a year ago? were there more applicants for this year's giveaway? >> we're still in a very difficult economic economy, and we have seen an increase in the number of families that registered for this event. we've heard stories that folks are still struggling to find jobs, and when parents have to weigh the cost of food, shelter and that sort of thing, school supplies don't always take the highest priorities. so we hope that this will alleviate that burden on to the parents and kids can go back to school feeling good, knowing they do have new good school

supplies to use. >> laney, thank you for talking to us. in event starts at 9 this morning, but we're told families do start lining up early around 8:00 so we should start seeing some people filing in here, a little later this morning. one other thing to point out, this is a pre-registered event. you can't just drop in. they've taken the applicants ahead of time and they've arranged for everyone to get one of these backpacks ahead of time. so it's just a sign of the need there is out there according to laney, about 1500 kids will will be getting the school supplies. ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. gas prices could tumble 20 cents by the end of this month, the reason the price for oil continues to follow. it's now $87 a barrel. right now triple-a says the prices for a gallon of regular unlead indeed san francisco is dollars 3.89. in oakland and san jose, the price is 9 cheaper. san francisco police say too many pedestrians are getting

injured in traffic related accidents south of market. so starting monday the department says it will increase patrols in the area around fifth and market. officers on cars, motorcycles and on foot will be looking for people violating traffic laws. the campaign will get a head start today at 9 a.m. volunteers will be handing out fliers to raise pedestrian awareness. the crackdown comes just two days after a hit-and-run driver struck a nine-year-old boy visiting from pennsylvania. on thursday night san francisco police say 21-year-old andrew vargas drove the wrong way up new montgomery and hit ryan white. the young boy and his family had just left the giants- phillies game at at&t park. this morning white remains in critical condition while vargas has been booked into jail. the suspect's family asked one of his bay area friends to pay vargas a visit. >> his parents live in -- city to college in the u.s., so

tonight have too many friends in the bay area so i'm glad they consider me a good friend. >> he is under psychiatric observation and could have his first court hearing on felony hit-and-run and dui charges on tuesday afternoon. some oakland police officers laid off and rehired are back on the streets this morning. ktvu had the only news crew there monday as the police chief greeted 25 returning officers. most of returning officers are start their assignments today, after a week of training. police union says the city was able to rehire the officers in part because current officers agreed to pay 9% into their pensions. santa clara police do not have any suspects in the stabbing at a bingo game night. a security camera took this footage of 66-year-old sam nicholas outside the american legion of honor. or hall, rather. two men approached nicholas and demanded he turn over the bag he was carrying.

>> covered with blood, and [not understandable] >> i looked out the big window and seen two people with guns in their hands. and i seen someone -- they were beating someone on the ground. >> nicholas only had paperwork, no cash. he talked to us on the phone from his hospital bed and says he hopes doctors will let him return to the bingo hall next week. he had 1100 dollars stolen last year. the club uses bilgeo money to send disadvantaged kids to camp. the coroner is trying to identify a body found burning inside a car. firefighters made the discovery yesterday near nick's cove. the car was fully engulfed in flames. it is still unclear how that person died. investigators are now using dental records and dna to try to identify the individual. the coast guard is asking for help to find a bay area sailor who may be lost at sea. family members say 62-year-old chris of concord left the bay

on july 25 together onboard his 27-foot sailboat amber. the plan, to sail south to san diego. his son contacted the coast guard on august 1, when it was clear his father never made it to san diego. the coast guard is now asking the public to contact them with any information they may have about the sailor's whereabouts. good morning to you! we are waking up with, well, more of the same. take a look at what is happening out there this morning. the gray skies, the fog, even drizzle around the bay and coast this morning. current temperatures in the 50s. 55 san francisco. upper 50s napa as well as fairfield. 59 degrees in concord. the onshore breeze a little stronger through the delta this morning. fairfield reporting gusts every 30 miles per hour. concord a little breezy. the rest of us dealing with light winds but that onshore gradient could mean cleaning will be just slightly slower

than friday. by 9:30, 10:00, inland areas beginning to see that sunshine. but it is over the east bay as well as the peninsula, through 10 and 11:00, even noontime before it finally is clearing out of the bay area. but we've got it over the coast, and those low clouds are expected to continue their pile- up off the coast for today. satellite view, not as clear as we see sometimes but that trough remains off the northwest coast. that's going to be the call for the weekend. so today very similar to yesterday, come sunday even slightly cooler than today. and then we begin a warming trend monday, tuesday, it's going to be a gentle warm-up. but the second half of the week we will eventually get back to some summer-like heat. in the meanwhile, we've got temperatures below average and we're looking pretty nice for the valley. take a look at santa rosa today, 80 degrees expected. 78 for son soma. mid-70s around kentfield. upper 60s for the east bay. 68 berkeley. 69 in oakland. inland areas, going to be nice

and warm. 83 for walnut creek and danville. into the santa clara valley, upper 70s. 78 for san jose. low 80s morgan hill. 68 san bruno. mid-60s san francisco. and along the coast we just can't find beach weather. 59 degrees for pacifica this afternoon. a cool 60 at half moon became. extended forecast here, slight little dip for tomorrow. then we begin to bounce back monday, tuesday, wednesday, finally getting back not upper 80s, perhaps low 90s by midweek wednesday for our inland areas. giants are at it again this afternoon. we have your forecast coming up. thank you, rosemary. now let's look at traffic. this is a live camera shot of the golden gate bridge. at this hour it's 7:13, you can see that it's fogged in. traffic pretty light going in both directions and as rosemary said, that giants game coming up at 1:00 at at&t park, lot of traffic expected to be coming to the city for that for sure.

residents say there is no electricity and medical supplies are running out. scary moments on a flight from paris to chicago. more than 200 passengers and crew had to evacuate on emergency slides. a passenger caught the chaos on his cell phone camera. the american airlines plane landed at chicago's o'hare airport just after 2:00 yesterday afternoon. passengers said the plane hit the ground hard and fishtailed, at least one tire caught fire during landing. >> i didn't want to panic so just -- signaled not to come over. there's a fire under the plane! >> flight attendants told all 220 passengers to leave their luggage behind and evacuate the plane on the slides. eight people were treated for minor injuries. federal officials are inspecting the boeing 767 to figure out how the fire started. a nigerian man accused of trying to blow up an airliner

now wants his trial moved. the lawyer for the man says his client cannot receive a fair trial in michigan. he is charged with trying to ignite explosives hidden if his underwear on a plane approaching detroit christmas day 2009. some of the nearly 300 people onboard jumped on him and put out the flames. he contends he has -- was never read his miranda rights and was drugged while being interrogated. the trial is set to begin october 4. a u.s. soldier accused of killing afghan civilians sentenced to three years of confinement after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in a deal with prosecutors. army specialist adam winfield was among five soldiers initially charged with murder. prosecutors say the civilian deaths were staged to look like combat casualties. win field says he was pressured into taking part. the man prosecutors say was the ringleader faces a court- martial later this year.

a sentencing phase for a texas polygamist resumes today. warren jeffs was found guilty of sexually assaulting dozens of underage brides and faces up to 119 years in prison. he stormed out of his sentencing hearing yesterday after declaring god promised a whirl wind every judgment if he wasn't set free. the judge is allowing him to return any time he chooses. jeffs' attorney says he does not know if his client will show up this morning. almost six years after hurricane katrina, a federal jury has convicted five new orleans police officers in connection with deadly shootings in the chaos after the storm. chris guitterez has details of the case. >> reporter: five new orleans police officers, three of them sergeants, convicted of deadly shootings on a bridge after hurricane katrina. federal prosecutors calling it a critically important verdict. >> public officials and especially law enforcement officers, will be held accountable for their acts. >> and the aftermath of hurricane katrina, there was lawlessness in new orleans and

deadly shootings on the bridge less than a week after the storm. ronald madison, 40, and 17-year- old james burset were shot and killed by police and four others wounded. his mother expresses her grief. >> they put the twinkle of my eye and blew out my cancel. but it's going to be all right because justice has been served. >> defense attorneys arguing people shot at police during katrina's chaos to protect themselves they returned fire. the sergeants and two officers all found guilty of civil rights violations in the shootings and trying to cover it up. they face possible life sentences. the sergeant also found guilty. >> rampages by police, especially during the most difficult times we face, are inexcusable. >> u.s. attorney generic holden also issued a statement saying he hopes the verdict will help

restore public trust in the new orleans police department all five officers are facing life terms. they're scheduled to be sentenced in december. it's called a back-to- school terror plot. three louisiana teenagers are in jail this morning accused of planning a shooting spree for their first day of school on monday. the three 15-year-old boys attended lakeshore high school in st. tammany parish outside new orleans. police say the boys plan on arriving on campus monday and opening fire. at least one student and one teacher were on a hit list confiscated by police. >> more than one student came through to administrators, they'd seen some things online they were worried about and went to administrator and said this is what we have. and of course we immediately turned it over to law enforcement. >> the boys planned on ending the assault by taking their own lives. as a precaution, extra security will be in place for the first day of classes on monday. an unexpected flood in the southeast. >> whoa!

at least one person is dead and two neighborhoods remain evacuated this morning after massive flooding in north carolina. this is happening in charlotte. at least three inches of rain fell yesterday, causing rivers and creeks to overflow their banks. first responders had to use boats to save some stranded residents. one woman lost everything she owned. >> all my friend, my deep freezer, wash machine, dryer, everything is gone. >> police say one woman died in the flood and another is missing after shoplifting from a burlington coat factory. investigators say the two women ran into a creek to get away

but were swept away by the water. and the water proved to be too much for a charlotte hotel. heavy rain caused a pipe to burst at the embassy suites sending water rushing inside. there are no reports of any injuries. one of san jose's most popular summer spots is now closed. the fountains at ceasar chavez park is usually where children can cool off in the summer heat. but city officials say the fountain failed recently, causing flooding in its underground vault. crews need to repair the equipment and complete a health inspection before reactivating the fountain water jets. and not too hot recently down there, had a little mild temperature. rosemary is joins us to give us a look at the details. rosemary. >> yes, playing in the fountains could be chilly and in addition to the gray, you may have those windshield wipers working if you're getzing outdoors early. it's a bit soggy. we've got drizzle and mist out there, even some pretty dense fog reported in some spots.

a big giveaway about to get underway shortly. hundreds of bay area schoolchildren are headed to san francisco for an event that should make their first day of school a little easier. good morning, everyone. welcome back to mornings on 2. it's saturday, august 6th. we will get to that supply giveaway. but first an update on the overnight news in afghanistan. 31 u.s. special operations forces were killed after the hop teenager they were in was attacked. just minutes ago, president obama issued his first response. he says his thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those who perished. the taliban is already claiming responsibility saying it brought down the helicopter with a rocket. a recovery operation at the site is underway. this morning's attack makes it the highest number of american casualties recorded in a single incident in the afghan war.

the new school year is just around the corner and some students in san francisco are getting help preparing to go become to class. ali rasmus joins us now at the back-to-school give away set to start this morning. ali. >> reporter: we're at the salvation army warehouse in san francisco, and the organization has pre-registered about 650 families to take part in this school supply giveaway. so that's between 1300 to 1500 kids. they're going to be getting backpacks like this. some are pre-stuffed with all the typical school supplies, rulers, notebooks, some colored pencils. but we're also learned that some school districts here in san francisco are asking kids to come prepared with flash drives. so the organizers will be giving kids that as well. but before they get their school supplies, the point here organizers say is to make this a fun experience for kids. so they've got games and kind of a carnival-like atmosphere set up for them. they'll be doing bean bag games, go fish, golf, also a shelf in the other room with a

bunch of books so kids can pick out books for themselves as well. organizers say this kind of event is essential as we head into the school year. we all know these are tough economic times, and according to a study from huntington bank the cost of school supplies is more expensive. the cost of school supplies is up 12% from a year ago. for middle schoolers up 25% from a year ago. >> rising costs of school supplies in addition to all other things that families need to survive, school supplies aren't always the highest priority for parents when they're struggling between food, shelter, bills, all those different things. >> now you are looking at video from last year's event. today the event starts at 9 a.m. but we're told some of the families start lining up here as early as 8:00. again, kids will be getting the school supplies, backpacks, and

flash drives and a gift card so they can have a new pair of shoes to start the school year. help is on the way for more than 12,000 schoolchildren in the south bay. volunteers have been stuffing backpacks with supplies for the past three weeks. this is the 15th year of the backpack giveaway. organizers started the campaign as part of her masters in business administration project. >> years ago i realized if you took homework home and were in third grid and didn't have pencils and scissors at home, you couldn't do your project. and there's a lot of that thing even from kind gotten on. >> companies helping with the effort include high-tech giants such as google and hewlett- packard. organizers will distribute the backpacks in about a week. pg&e says don't be alarmed if you smell gas in pockets of san jose and fremont today. crews will be out venting natural gas as part of the pressure test.

the natural gas should dissipate quickly and is not considered harmful. but if you're concerned, pg&e says you can call the number there on your screen. pg&e will release natural gas in mountainview on monday. two of california's largest newspapers are going after the state a system blame they're trying to find out how much lawmakers are spending on their office budgets. the sacramento bee and the los angeles times filed a joint lawsuit yesterday after the assembly refused to make the budget public. the newspapers asked to see the budgets when the speaker took office finding a way from a southern california a systemly man. he says he lost the funding because he voted against the state budget plan earlier this year. legislative analysts say california is going to have a tough time reducing the state's overcrowded prisons. california is currently under orders by the u.s. supreme court to do so. governor jerry brown wants to move thousands of inmates from state prisons to county jails. but the legislative analysts

office says that plan won't meet the deadline in two years. the state does have the option of asking for an extension. a new state law bans jurors from texting, tweeting or using their smart phones to research cases or communicate with others about them. the judicial council says use of electronics is becoming a threat to the justice semel a juror who is found using electronic or wireless devices face a misdemeanor. that law takes effect in january. a 15-month-old richmond girl has drowned after falling into a family swimming pool. the toddler's mother called 911 yesterday afternoon. police say the mother was watching several children and briefly lost track of the girl. the child went into the backyard, child the ladder to the pool and fell in. she was rush to the hospital where she later died. students can get vaccinated against whooping cough for free today. a new state law requires students entering 7 through 12th grades to show proof of a

whooping cough vaccine. students have 30 days from the first day of school to comply with the law. and the booster shot can cost more than $60 at some pharmacies. but again it's free in sonoma county today and next saturday. today's vaccination clinic runs from 10:00 this morning until 2 in the afternoon. food stamp use is up across the country, but right here in the bay area not everyone is taking part. advocates say only half the people who qualify for food stamps are actually getting them. they say it's damaging the economy because for every dollar someone spends in food stamps, advocates claim $1.80 in economic activity is activated. >> we really have chosen to do this the hard way, and unfortunately it's against the clients and come up against in wall of bureaucracy.

>> advocates estimate alameda county is missing out on almost $107 million in federal help. about $93 million are going union justified in san francisco and contra costa county it's close to $90 million. fresh and easy is recalling its organic baby spinach. the product could be contaminated with listeria. that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections. fresh and easy says no illnesses have been reported. the recalled spinach has been an enjoy by date of august 1. new research is emphasizing the ponce of a good diet. a study from the albert einstein college of medicine in new york shows brain cells responsible for controlling hunger actually start to eat themselves when the bod goes without food for several hours. although the study was performed on mice, human biology mimics that of mice. by studying brain functions, scientists hope to development treatments to combat obesity

and overeating. san jose this morning, starting out with a gray skies and our weather pattern is going to persist. living inland you might be shouting hurray because it's been awfully nice there. along the coast, cloudy if cool. our winds light at this hour, calm, east southeasterly breeze in san jose. a fairfield that wind, 20 miles per hour gust to go near 30 so that delta brose stronger than it was yesterday. and we're watching some of the clouds push in through the delta as well. fairfield dealing with mostly gray skies and concord dealing with a southerly breeze, about 10 miles per hour. so we do expect the fog and clouds to burn off for most areas once again. could be a little bit of a later clearing because of a stronger onshore breeze this morning. 57 degrees santa rosa now. 56 in san francisco. even dealing with a little bit of drizzle in some areas upper 50s, low 60s. but it feels cool out there even a little moist. so for this morning, and

through the afternoon, we will continue to watch the clouds burn away slowly. but we're looking at temperatures below average along the coastline. it's going to be cool, another mild day in the bay, and our inland spots going to be warm, a little breezy as well. for the afternoon we're expecting wind from 15 to 25 miles per hour. so for the afternoon, be prepared for that. if i run you through the afternoon, by 9:30, 10:00 we see the burnoff. very similar to yesterday but could take a little longer. here we are, noontime finally clearing the east bay, then for the afternoon it's going to hang along the coastline and temperatures will only manage upper 50s, low 60s for areas around pacifica and half moon bay inland spots, a nice day. 77, napa 80 degrees for santa rosa, 76 vallejo. inland east bay, 82 concord, 84 antioch. upper 60s for berkeley, oakland, low 70s into hayward. 75 expected fremont today. the peninsula going to be a mild one, 74 redwood city. 70 in san mateo and further

the real casey anthony is still waiting to find out if she have to report to an orlando probation office for her check fraud case. a judge ruled yesterday he needs more time to make that decision. anthony has been in hiding since getting out of prison. a four-year-old boy is back with his mother after being kidnapped in a central coast. the child and his mother were staying at a church shelter in atascadero. the mother got no a fight why another shelter rest den, and 52-year-old annette hale took the boy, triggering an amber alert. nearly 70 police officers and 100 volunteers participated in a ground and air search. then yesterday evening, police received an non-anonymous call from a woman they believe was hale, telling them the boy was at an abandoned car dealer shupp. officers found the boil and the boy and hale, who was hiding in the bushes. >> we were so rejoicing. it's unusual for these things to come out well.

of those who perished. the attraction happened and the taliban is claiming responsibility saying it brought down the helicopter with a rocket. a recovery operation is underway. this morning's attacks may set the highest number of american casualties in a single accident in the afghan war. we're following reaction to standard and poor's decision to downgrade the countries' credit rating. the credit agency made the announcement last night, saying the recent debt deal passed by congress does not go far enough to address the countries's debt problem and it is pessimistic about congress and the administration bridging political differences to handle the debt. overnight, asian financial leaders reacted cautiously. >> the recent downgrade is really a lose-lose situation. the u.s. suffers and asia suffers too. with the downgrade, interest rate will have to rise because

struggle to make ends meet. ali rasmus is live in san francisco, where hundreds of children will get free school surprise today. ali. >> reporter: it's organized by the salvation army in san francisco, and organizers want to make this a fun experience for the kids. so they accept a carnival-like atmosphere. before the kids get their school supplies they'll play games, there's a shooting game, bean bag toss, old-fashioned popcorn machine. and two warehouses full of stuff. go fishing, some golf here on our left and in this room, they have a face painting table and also a book table where kids can pick up a book and stuff it in their backpacks, before they head out here. we have some video of what this event looked like last year when it was full of kids getting their school supplies. organizers with the salvation army say there are two things different about the event this year. for the first time, they have a waiting list of families waiting to receive the school supplies. and there are about 100 kids on

that waiting lust because the demand was so high. it's also the first year the salvation army has had to buy a majority of these school supplies themselves. and they explained why. >> probably 95% of our items are purchased this year. normally, what happens is corporates give us their binders, pencils, pens, papers, but because of the economy and they're having such a hard time they don't have excess like they used to. >> once the kids get through all the fun and games, this is what they get it walk away with, a backpack pre-suffered with notebooks and folders. just colored pencils. they're also giving the kids flash drives because now a lot of schools are asking kids to come prepared with flash drives, and they're giving the kid a gift card so they can go buy some new shoes. but this event is pre- registered, there's 650 families signed up for it so between 1300 and 1500 kids are going to be coming through here and getting their school

good morning to you! live from emeryville this morning, a gloomy start to the day, afternoon sunshine and mild temperatures on the way. a hiker found out the hard way that you don't mess with a mother grizzly. 15-year-old was hike alone yesterday in montana when he stumbled on to a mother bear with an older cub. the hiker says the momma bear bit him on the arm, leg and foot but he was able to walk away and call for help. rangers have closed a trail to investigate the incident. they say bear attacks at glacier national park are very rare. the u.s. government has issued a travel warning for americans in syria. the state don't accuse the syrian government of killing 2,000 people in uprisings since march and at least 24 civilians were killed by security forces

two neighborhoods remain evacuated this morning after massive flooding in charlotte, north carolina. at least three inches of rain fell yesterday, causing rivers and creeks to overflow their banks. first responders had to use boats to save some stranded residents and one woman says she lost everything she owns. >> all my computers, my deep freezer, wash machine, dryer, everything is gone. >> police say one woman died in the flood and another is missing after shoplifting from a coat factory. investigators say they ran into a creek to get away, but were then swept away by the water. and the water proved to be too much for a charlotte hotel. heavy rain caused a pipe to burst at the embassy suites. sending water rushing inside. no one was injured. in the south bay, they're still dealing with record heat. the dallas/fort worth area has spent 36 straight days at 100 degrees or above. the record is 42 days, set in

the kids to go fishing, some golf over there, and this room they have a table for some face painting, kids will be able to get their faces paint. and before they leave they can pick out a book before they head out. we have video of what this event look looked last year when the two warehouses were full of kids. they had about 650 families last year, about 1300 kids come through. the same number of families and kids are coming to this year's giveaway. but organizers say there's definitely more of a need this year. this is the first year they have had to set up a waiting list for families needing school supplies for their kids. there are 50 families and about 100 kids on that waiting list. >> it's a shore sign that there's definitely a need for this type of distribution, and there's an increased demand in san francisco of folks still struggling to make ends meet. and this is one example. >> once the kids get through all the games. , this is what they get, a

packard. organizers will distribute the backpacks in about a week. a south bay man remains in the hospital this morning, victim of a robbery outside a bingo game. this is 66-year-old stan nicholas at the santa clara american legion hall. a charity bingo night had just ended when two men approached nicholas demanding he turn over bag he was carrying. >> covered with blood, and -- [not understandable] everybody thought it was a gunshot wound. >> i looked out the big window and seen two people with guns in their hand. and i seen someone beating someone on the ground. >> nicholas says he only had paperwork and no cash on hand. he did talk to us on phone from his hospital bed and says he hopes doctors will let him return to the bingo hall next week. he says he had 1100 dollars stolen last year, the club uses bingo money to send disadvantaged children to camp.

a 15-month-old girl has died after falling into a family swimming pool. police say the mother was watching several children and briefly lost track of the girl the child went into the become yard, climbed the ladder to the pool and fell in. she was rushed to the hospital, with are she later died. a four-year-old boy is back with his mother after being kidnapped in the central coasted. the child and his mother were staying at a church shelter in atascadero. the mother got into a fight with another shelter resident and police say 52-year-old annette hale then took the boy, triggering an amber alert. nearly 70 police officers and more than 100 volunteers participated in the ground and air search. and yesterday evening, police received an anonymous call from a woman they believe was hale, telling them the boy was at an abandoned car dealership. officers found the boy and hale, hiding in the bushes.

we continue to follow that helicopter crash in afghanistan, which killed 31 troops overnight. we told you just about eight minute ago that sources are telling the associated press the majority of those u.s. forces killed are from navy seal team six. that is the same team that carried on the the raid that killed osama bin laden in may. overnight afghanistan's president said 31 u.s. troops were killed in that crash and it appears the helicopter was shot down during a rocket attack. this morning taliban is claiming responsibility. craigslist may help save
