begin with a stunning blow to the u.s. forces. the taliban claims its insurgents used a rocket to bring down the chinook helicopter. it happened -- it happened about 60 miles south of kabul. the navy confirms the 32 s.e.a.l.s who died by long to the same unit who killed osama bin laden. none of the men on that mission died. it's the deadliest single losses for u.s. forces in afghanistan since the war began in 2001. >> translator: too early to say if this was from a strengthening taliban force. there has to be an investigation. the white house released this photo of president obama getting the news at camp david today. the president said his thoughts an prayers go out to the -- and prayers go out to the families

who perished. more details now. navy s.e.a.l.s. are known for their intense training to carry out missions under extreme conditions all over the world. they are especially trained for sea-to-land operations, undergoing survival courses so grueling that 80% of s.e.a.l. candidates drop off. s.e.a.l.s. also get training for other operations before they graduate. some 70 troops in afghanistan returned to the bay area. they landed at travis air force base in fairfield just after 5:00. the personnel are members of the 615th contingency response wing. they are back from weeks of deployment at a base in romania. among other duties, they helped coordinate the flow of

equipment in afghanistan. much more on this coming up on the 10:00 news tonight. new at 6:00 tonight, about 90 minute the ago, police shook -- minutes ago, police took a shooting suspect in a shooting that shut down an oakland street. this all happened around 4:30, at 42nd and helen street. residents say streets were coming from a home that's also a day -- they were coming from a home. john sasaki is live at oakland headquarters where we're learning two of the victims are women. john? >> reporter: police have had a long time trying to solve the 66th killing of the year. it happened this morning and they stayed on the case with no sleep until late this afternoon. chards of glass littered the

street in east oakland. remnants of the deadly shooting that happened at 1:30 this morning. they ran into two rival groups, there was a dispute. they began shooting each other. and they are innocent bystanders shot in the -- caught in the crossfire. >> reporter: the victims were attending -- heading to a club. so you don't believe they were involved? >> oh, definitely not. they were innocent bystanders. >> reporter: one woman suffered a minor gunshot wound to the hand. >> it appears to be multiple shooters. we can't say how many were shooting. it's under investigation. i'm gonna ask for a lot of citizen assistance.

>> reporter: i talked briefly with candy's mother and her aunt. they came to talk to headquarters. both declined to comment to us but they were obviously devastating. there is a 15,000 -- $15,000 reward offered in this case. the 9-year-old boy from pennsylvania who was struck by a hit-and-run driver after a giants' game remains in critical condition. san francisco police say ryan and his family were leaving at&t park thursday night when the boy was hit by 21-year-old andrew vargas. vargas is expected to have his first court hearing on dui and hit-and-run charges on tuesday. in san jose, police are searching for suspects in an early-morning brawl that led to four men being stabbed. officers say the four were stabbed during a fight at south 9th at about 2:45. non. injuries appears to be life- threatening. family and friends of the two uc berkeley graduates held

in iran are awaying -- are awaiting word for a verdict. iran's foreign minister said he hopessed verdict will re-- he hopes the verdict will lead to the release of the two men. they say they accidentally crossed into iran while hiking. they were arrested with sarah shourd. she was released. tonight, the united states is in uncharted territory, facing the first credit downgrade. it's not sure how this will affect the u.s. federal government. some experts say it could lead to -- higher interest rates on mortgage rates, loans and credit cards if investors decide to sell off u.s. treasuries. standard & poor's blame congress. >> this was something really beyond our expectations.

>> analysts believe the u.s. can remain the aaa rating it's held since 1917 but it will take some time. meantime, americans appear to be on a credit card spending spree. the federal reserve says americans charged and borrowed more money in june than any month in almost four years. experts say borrowing usually means consumers are feeling flush but in this case they may people may be using credit to tide them over during tough times. for the latest on the credit situation, be sure to visit our website, ktvu.com, and click on the wall street stab. rangers of yosemite park have recovered the body of a man who has been missing since last month. they say the man crossed the guardrail at the top of the guardrail with two friends on july 20th. all three were pulled over the cliff by swift waters.

the bodies of the other victims have not yet been recovered. the search guard is searching for a missing sailor from the east bay. officials say this man of concord began sailing from alameda to san francisco almost two weeks ago. his son contacted officials earlier this week when he couldn't reach his father on the phone. now to a black party with a purpose. ktvu's mike mibach was at the first-ever event in richmond designed to quell the violence. >> hercules. >> i think it will help the community together, keep the community together. >> reporter: they say the inaugural richmond party was hosted by the baptist church. >> in my church, i stress, united we stand. divided we fall.

>> reporter: a similar block party was being held. the july 18th homicide happened right next to the park right when a block party was being held. >> i'm not gonna say it's getting better. but i'm not gonna say it's getting worse. >> reporter: what she will say, block parties like this do work. she's not alone. >> we're taking the risk and we just want to be a positive role to the community. >> it's part of the answer. i mean, it's not gonna be the thing that fixes all of the problems. >> reporter: heather not only lives in richmond she's a spokesperson for chevron. >> bit by bit we're working together as a whole community to work on these issues and that's ultimately what is gonna prove successful. >> reporter: success on the streets of north richmond.

that's the goal. now the community hopes to achieve it. new mothers and their babies took part in a nationwide sin dro newsed nursing event -- synchronized nursing event. they came together, to remove the stigma of breast-feeding in public. >> we're just looking for support. where we can sit down and have a conversation with somebody else and breast-feed our baby andis no big deal -- and it's no big deal. >> today's event helps wrap up world breast-feeding week which ends tomorrow. women across san francisco came together in a march against sexism [ chanting ] >> the ray was held at delores park this afternoon. no matter what people are wearing, women do not reserve

to be raped, they rallied. >> so this is to change the collective mindset of our cult chur. >> the event stems from an incident in toronto where police officers advised women to change how they dress so they are not victimized. since then, women have marched in other areas. hundreds got help today taking the financial sting out of buying school supplies. turning to divine intervention to fix the nation's woes but not everyone is happy about this. how a simple wash means thousands of food for the bay area.

volunteers were out in san francisco this morning hoping to reduce the number of pedestrian accidents. >> we have very high fatality and injury incidents in our intersections in this city. and when you compare it to nationwide, it's really shocking. >> the volunteers handed out fliers at the corner of 5th and market streets. they say last year more than 200 people were hurt in accidents in the south market area, the highest rate in all of the city. starting monday, san francisco police will increase patrols in that same area, around 5th and market. officers on car motorcycles and

on foot will patrol the area. the average family will spend $500 on supplys for school -- supplies for school. allie rasmus has more about how the need has grown. >> reporter: when the kids came in, it was all fun and games but for their parents, this outing at the salvation army was essential. >> it's a big help. a real big help for us. and now my daughter will start school on the 15 and have everything she needs. >> reporter: others, say the -- organizers say the need this year is greater. this is the first time in 13 years they had to set up a waiting list. >> there is an increased demand in san francisco. folks are still struggling to

make ends meet. >> kleenex, paper for the printers, it adds up when you see all of the things we need. >> reporter: and this year, the several had to buy 95% of these -- the salvation army had to buy 95% of these supplies because donations are done. >> normally what's, corporate give uses -- gives us their pencils and papers. but they don't have the access like they used to. >> it's nice to know that people still help us because of the bad situation right now. >> reporter: like many older students today she's aware of the struggles the parents face and coming here reminds here they are not alone. san francisco parents are taking advantage of the vaccine clinic that was held today on oak street. a new law requires students across the state from 7th

through 12th grade to show prove of having the vaccine. students have 30 days from the first day of school to comply with the new law. friends after missing san francisco man fanned out across the city today hoping to find some sign of him. 29-year-old maurice james was last seen on sunday. he's described as 6 feet tall, 155 pounds. he was last seen wearing a red t-shirt and they plan 20 keep on searching until -- plan to keep -- plan to keep on searching. ♪ >> about 30 -- about 30,000 christens gathered -- christians at the reliant arena for prayers.

sunny skies and 73. forecast story for tonight is this, partly cloudy skies. fog will be increasing. tomorrow for your sunday. some more numbers inland. and the extended forecast, we'll bump up the numbers bisters and wednesday into next week. tomorrow morning the -- morning, most of the bay area starting out around 52 to 55. we've been talking about the fog it seems like forever and this cool system is moving in from the north and as a result, not much change for your sunday. patchy fog, on the col side for the coast -- con the cool side for the coast -- on the cool side. we'll call it nice with temperatures back in the lower 80s. wind speed is still a factor, to around 20 miles an hour from the southwest. here's the forecast models, showing you the fog.

and then still a bit stubborn. 1:00 tomorrow and then there's the eventual fog. tomorrow's forecast at 7:00. 53 to 5. fog and drizzle. still some patchy fog at 12:00. and then the upper 50 the all the way to the lower -- 50s all the way to the lower 80s. the warmest locations inland, in the lower 80s. san jose around 77. half moon bay at 60. san francisco in the lower 60s and at the ballpark for tomorrow afternoon, partly cloudy skies. a bit of a breeze out there with temperatures right around 60 degrees at first pitch. here is a look ahead to your five-day forecast -- and temperatures warming up a little bit as we do head into monday and then the warming trend continues for tuesday and wednesday. this is not a major deal. but be approaching the
