a quiet bay area neighborhood is the scene of a horrible death. as a woman is killed by the family dog. good evening everyone i'm healther holmes in tonight for julie haener. and i'm frank somerville. it's a horrific a call as police will ever get. a 911 call from a man who said his dog killed his pregnant wife. debra villalon live in pacifica now where that tragedy unfolded this afternoon, debra. >> reporter: this couple wasn't known well. moved in just months on this

quiet street and neighbors say it was a quiet household until today. greg napora left for work at 8:00, came home at noon and sometime in between his pregnant wife darla was mauled by one of their two pet pit bulls. >> found the dog hovering over his wife. she had major trauma to her body and face. >> reporter: bitten dozens of time, not breathing on her living room floor. firefighters tried to give her cpr. and while there, the dogs attacked firefighters. many didn't know they were there, had never seen the pit bulls outdoors. >> those dogs were dangerous. i wouldn't have one and i wouldn't want my family around

them. >> reporter: but the naporo's nearest neighbor said their dogs were always well behaved. >> if the dogs were ever barking, she would call them off and they always responded very well. >> reporter: for this distraught husband, it came out of the blue. >> we were able to give him a change of clothing and have some relatives respond and we were able to interview him. right now he's with family. >> reporter: a second pit bull not part of the attack was taken from this home to animal control for now. the dead dog will get a necropsi tomorrow for possible clues as to why it attacked. we're live in pacifica, debra villalon, channel channel 2

news. a man pled not guilty to charges that he hit and run after hitting 9-year-old ryan white along mission street. white and his family had just watched the phillies play at at&t park. vargas had been free on bail but today the judge raised bill from 65,000 to $465,000 and afterward vargas was taken to jail. new at 10:00, b.a.r.t. police credit a show of force for heading off a show of violence. sheer manpower wasn't the only tactic b.a.r.t. used, eric rasmussen has the story. >> reporter: a few hours ago b.a.r.t. confirmed it cut off all cell phone service for everybody at the station here below me around the time that protest

was expected to happen. it could have made a real emergency even worse. with a small army of police on the platform at b.a.r.t. civic center station and even more officers on stand by aboveground. authorities shut down a protest before it everyone started. the goal to repeat a repeat of this scene last month when another protest over the shooting of hill quickly got out of hand and disrupted service system wide. this time, the disruption didn't happen although we found a man who said he was there for the protest. >> reporter: what is going on? where is everybody? >> we never know. they might be here, they might not. >> reporter: but one thing we noticed was a lack of cell phone service. >> i'm scared now. >> reporter: especially when people realized it was not a normal outage. >> if you don't have cell service and something happens,

name on the ballot. he was joined by joana ruiz. earlier this week, ed lee threw his hat into the ring. in all more than 30 candidates are running for mayor in november. the financially strapped u.s. postal service is warning of more cut backs that includes reducing it's work force by 20%. the moves would require conflicting approval. union opposition is expected. the usps says it needs to cut 120,000 jobs by 2015. and it is considering closing as many as 3,700 postoffice. in the past few year, the postal service has lost $50 million and mail service has dropped by 20%. the u.s. labor department reported an unexpected decline in first time jobless claims today. those seeks unemployment benefit hit a four month low of

mosaic of what's out there. >> reporter: just as block busters were down for the summer, the time of the year may be contributing to the volatility with constitutional investors taking vacation and specklators running the market, the swings are more pronounced. the asian markets have been trading for five hours but so fast there are no moves. the nikkei is down .3%. the hang seng is up 1%. close to one out of five high school students dropped out last year according to the report released. in all 94,000 students didn't get a diploma. that's about 18%. san francisco had a

considerably lower rate of 11%. the state says these new numbers can't be compare to past years because it's using a new more accurate formula. we posted a link to the state's data base, look for the web link section. you can see the drop out rates for different school districts. marijuana may be the largest cash crop here in california but a judge ruled today that it is not an agriculture crop. a judge ruled that a medical marijuana crop cannot be ground on land that's ruled for agriculture. the judge ruled marijuana has never been classified as a crop or a horticultural product. the new $150 fee goes for local fire prevention programs. the governor says the money should fund calfire. if a change isn't made, the

an arrest tonight in the drive by shooting in oakland that left a little 3-year-old boy dead. amber lee tells us what led investigators to their suspect and why the police chief hopes it'll be a catalyst for change, amber. >> reporter: heather news of the arrest is bringing people down to this memorial. we want to bring you a closer look of this sad reminder of why this tribute is here. this is a bullet hole from monday's shooting on this iron gate. this afternoon the city leaders made the announcement the community had been waiting to hear. >> the alameda county district attorney's office filed charges against lawrence denard. >> reporter: the 26-year-old convicted felon had been charged with the murder of 3- year-old carlos nava and the attempted murder of two others. police are still looking for a

second suspect. a family member told us the boy's parents want justice but right now, they are still grieving. >> it's so much hurt that my cousin and his wife, they just can't comprehend that right now. >> reporter: police say there's an average of three shootings every 24 hours on the streets of oak land. chief anthony batts says he hopes carlos murder is a catalyst for change. batts says witnesses led in investigators to denard. >> this should be the rallying cry for this city to turn itself around. >> reporter: police say they recovered several handguns. several neighbors told us they find some comfort in knowing there's been an arrest. >> there's one less person on the street that's you know

killing innocent people. >> we live in this community and this shouldn't be going on. i'm just glad the person got caught. >> reporter: the man who killed carlos will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. if convicted, denard faces 40 years in prison. more details now on lawrence denard we checked his arrest record and it shows that in 2004 he was arrested in oakland for robbing a street vendor. that same year denard was arrested for illegal possession of a shotgun. we've also learned denard dropped out of the school of social justice in 2004. ktvu spoke by phone today to dodson. he is one of the persons that got shot in the drive-by shooting.

he is denying he was the target. >> i am 36 years old man, i'm not in gangs. >> hudson had a message to the family of 3-year-old carlos nava. >> i am sorry that it happened, but if there's anything i can do for the family i will try to help them. >> reporter: hudson is facing more surgery but he says he's fortunate the bullet missed his major organs. this is the scene at 64th avenue and international boulevard. some of the video is just too graphic for us to air. you can though see two of the victims on the sidewalk and the crowd that gathered near by. the videographer smith says the

shooting motivated him to help nava's family. a block party is now being planned and all of the proceeds will go to the nava family. >> when i was filming the little boy his face was like what? what happened? what's going on. >> reporter: five more americans were killed in afghanistan today, they died in a roadside bombing on the southern part of that country. two nato soldiers were also killed in other attacks and we're getting the first pictures of some of the wreckage of that helicopter that shot down saturday. coalition forces took away all the large pieces of wreckage when they recovered the bodies. the flags are flying in half staff for all of the service

governor perry announced that he was going to announce this weekend. it was a level of intensity we've seen. it's been a while since they debated. they got on stage, eight gop candidates went after each other. eight gop candidates strike a feisty tone in tonight's republican race. >> she led the effort over obama care. we got obama care. she led the effort against tarp, we got tarp. it's not her spine we're worried about it's her record of results. if that's your view of effective leadership with results, please stop because you're killing us. >> reporter: it's clear that topic number one is the country's economy, the country's credit downgrade and

leading up to. >> reporter: as craig mentioned another republican is about to enter the race, texas governor rick perry staff says he will make the announcement on saturday. the two term governor is planning a rally in south carolina on the same day that all the current candidates will be competing on that iowa straw poll. governor perry is expected to tout his fiscal conservative values. president obama hit the road and expressed his frustration with republicans in congress. the president went to michigan. the current credit downgrading could have been avoided if congress had been willing to compromise says the president. and he says voters can do something about the political climate in washington. >> you've got to tell them you've had enough of the

a key figure in the killing of oakland journalist chauncey bailey set to be sentenced tomorrow. broussard pled guilty to killing bailey and another man. as part of the plea deal in the case he agreed to testify against yusuf bey iv and antwon mackey. broussard is scheduled to get a 25 year sentence. the last three members of super economy have been announced. they are democratic house members on the economy. each party has three members from both the senate and house on that committee. the bipartisan committee has three weeks to announce a plan for the next three years. the court agreed today to hear the case and issue a

decision by mid-january, it also issued an order preventing the state from moving ahead with its plan to take almost $2 billion away from agencies. san jose is among a group of cities fighting that new law. if you're thinking of buying a home or looking to refinance, mortgage rates hit a nine month low this week. freddie mac says the average rate for a 30 year fix loan dropped to 4.32% down from 4.39%. a 15 year fix is now at 3.5% the lowest on record. the lowest rate is as a result of concern that the u.s. economy is slowing down. exports from california increased in june compared to the previous year marking the 20th straight month that's happened. exports totaled $13.8 billion up 13% from last year. after adjusting for inflation, exports are at prerecession levels. pg & e's effort to detect

gas leaks went high tech. pg & e tried out a new aerial technology. it uses gas levels read from a helicopter. a review of the study will be completed by next month. pg & e says if the technology is proven reliability it could be used regularly by the end of year. there are big problems for san francisco's plan for the america's cup. that's what some residents told city leaders today. >> reporter: key details activists say are just wrong with the draft environment impact report. hundreds of extra visitors could hurt the bay area. the report doesn't contemplate crowds here at coit tower. really, can you imagine a better place to watch a

san francisco game company zynga has released financial records. zynga is known for its popular games on facebook. they acknowledge an accounting mistake and a $1 billion line of credit. estimates of zynga's value have ranged from 5 billion to $11 billion. zynga added 300 employees in the last four months. fox news is reporting that general motors is going ahead with an all electric cadillac after canceling the project last year. it would be the first all electric coupe to be produced. models would go on sale in 2013 and 2014. they would issue a more

returned her kids this afternoon. they were dropped off unharmed at their grandmother's house three days after they were taken. hernandez and a female accomplice are still on the run and they may be headed to mexico. police say they have run out of leads in the killing of a homeless man. the body of harikara was found in an abandoned building. today police made one last plea. the killing could become a cold case if no one steps forward. in news of the world tonight, british prime minister david cameron promised tough measures to prevent further rioting. he is looking to limit the use of social media sites. the prime minister also said he would ask police here in the

his injuries after falling at yosemite park. so far this year 14 people have died at yosemite, this latest victim is not included in the count because he died at the hospital. the number of antibiotic resistant salmonella cases from tainted turkey continues to rise. the center for disease control says there has now been 107 confirmed cases. six of those cases were in california including the only death. a 65-year-old woman from northern california. nearly 40% of those who became ill were sick enough that they required hospitalization. your grocery bill could be a little smaller by the end of year as farmers prepare for a major fall harvest. the u.s. department of agriculture says food prices have risen by as much as 40% this year amidst concern that the hot weather may impact the harvest. turns out that farmers planted

one of the largest crops since world war ii which is expected to cause prices to ease. a test of the fastest aircraft ever to be built did not go well today. this is the hyper sonic technology vehicle ii after it launched this morning lost contact. but nine minutes of data were recovered. the falcon is designed to fly 19,000-miles-an-hour. this is something you probably haven't seen before and you won't see again. the shuttle's discovery and endeavour facing each other. nasa was moving the shut shuttles to get them ready for their future. discovery will go to the smithsonian and endeavour to los angeles. fog already pushing back into the bay. that signals a temperature
