heartbreak and sympathy in a coastal community, the aftermath of a fatal dog attack that killed a pregnant woman. good afternoon, i am tori campbell. we will get to that attack in a moment. first breaking news. terminal one at the oakland airport was closed down for a time this morning. ktvu went out to cover this

breaking news story and we are hearing there has been a change in the past couple of minutes. >> reporter: yeah, good news in the last couple of minutes but as these things happen it takes a while to get back to normal. you can see people lined up at terminal two which is receiverred for southwest airlines but they were funneling people over there to check in. take a look at the video we shot from chopper 2 this morning. it started at 10:15. that is when a passenger going through terminal 1 through a checkpoint was stopped for what appeared to be a suspicious package. they closed that checkpoint and moved the passengers over to terminal two to be checked through for their flight. some of those passengers were confused and said they were told the planes themselves p not being allowed to taxi up to

the gate. we had not heard of delays but that would indicate there must have been delays. the bomb squad was called in and you can see that from the video we shot from chopper 2. we talked to a spokesperson from the bomb squad who described package as this, he said it contained liquid and cables coiled around and something that could look like a starter or igniter. without being very specific about what it really was. he said it was not a bomb. the starter igniter could have been a pump or an air mattress. the passenger trying to bring those on board was detained but again not a bomb. the terminal was opened at 11:38 this morning, so just about 20 minutes ago as we were leaving terminal one we saw a bomb sniffing dog coming down and as things were winding down, so hopefully things will be back to normal here soon at oakland international airport but certainly if you have a flight or picking someone up it

is worth calling to make sure about the delays. noel walker, ktvu channel 2 news. >> it is a dog attack that shocked a community. a pit bull malls his pregnant owner. tara moriarty says this is the first time such an attack has happened in 25 years. >> reporter: that's correct. we spoke to the captain and he says investigators are waiting to the autopsy results on the victim and the dog in order to get a better idea how it played out. an hour and 1/2 ago her husband came about the house to pick up things. neighbors keep stopping by the home with flowers, candles and well wishes. yesterday morning craig left for work and when he came home for lunch he found his pregnant wife bitten and dying on the living room floor, the bloody pit bull hovering over here.

>> this was one of those bloody scenes we respond to, she did have a lot of trauma. she was not responsive. she was not breathing. >> police shot and killed the pit bull after it lunged at them. the examination will reveal it if had rabies or a condition that led it to attack its owner. we spoke to one owner. she says she is relieved no neighborhood children were ever attacked. >> i walk there with my -- with my -- my son. he-0 there is always, you know, strollers, because it is a very you know young family neighborhood. >> many believe this incident could lead to a law requiring pit bull owners to neuter their pets. this particular dog was not neutered. it is a law that already exists in san francisco but not in san mateo county. live at pacifica, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> an alameda county judge was scheduled this morning to sentence the man who confessed

to shooting and killing oakland journalist chauncey bailey. he agreed to a plea deal in which he would be sentenced to 25 years. in exchange he testified that the former owner of your black muslim bakery ordered the 2007 murder. in june a jury convicted him and another man of murdering him. the judge planned to hold a hearing today on a motion for a new trial. their attorneys say broussard lied. the suspect arrested to the shooting death of a 3-year-old boy was supposed to enter a plea but that has been delayed. jade hernandez joins us live to explain what the suspect is now focusing on. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon. we are told by his family he is working on getting an attorney. he was supposed to enter a plea today but that has been delayed. we are live in oakland. police say they have the evidence to prove lawrence denard was the shooter in a

deadly drive by on monday near 64th and international, something his family denies. >> that is a lie. he never was a member of a gang. that is a lie. oakland don't got gangs. they are just making out of that right now to make it be something. >> his family says their cousin was not there, didn't pull the trigger and would not kill an innocent boy. they can't say where he was or who he was with on that day, but they do deny what police are calling a gang feud which lead to the shooting. >> somebody is yelling. he is like, he is whining, got this, and oh, yeah, we going to make sure he is gone. no way they don't want to see him walking the streets in oakland or nothing lake that. >> reporter >>: one of the victims i shot yesterday who can be seen in this video is in surgery. he told me he could not tell say who the shooter was, only

he had dreads, one of the victims named the driver, not the shooter. they found another witness who identified denard as the shooter but his fame family continues to support. >> i feel sorry for the baby and the baby's kids because i got kids so i feel sorry for them but you are incident until you are proven guilty. >> he was arrested at an apartment where they recovered several guns. he waived his rights and gave a statement denying his innocence. denard is expected to enter his plea august 29th. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> after a roller coaster week stocks were on another miniroller coaster today but they are up again. a live look at the big board the dow is up 147 at 11,290. the nasdaq is up 19. s&p is up eight. the dowd a briefly turned negative earlier today after a dismal survey on consumers

feeling about their personal finances and the economy was released. but what has helped put stocks in positive territory today is the latest report on retail sales. the commerce department reported a half percent increase in sales in july, which is the best showing since march. nine out of 13 categories showed a gain in sales with electronics, furniture, autos and gas at the top. sales for may and june were also revised upward, which could be a sign the economy is not quite as weak as previously believed. a federal appeals court  this morning struck down the provision in president obama's healthcare reform plan that requires most americans to carry health insurance or face penalties. a three judge panel of the 11th circuit court of appeals in atlanta ruled the so-called individual mandate is unconstitutional. the administration is likely to ask for the full court of appeals to hear the case. most observers believe the u.s.

supreme court will eventually decide the issue. bart continues to warn commuters to be alert for possible disruptions by protesters in the coming hours or day. we are learning bart is going high tech in efforts to head off more rowdy protests over a recent failed police shooting of a man armed with a knife. late yesterday bart shut off cell phone service to everyone inside the station. officials want to avoid a repeat of a protest a month ago that disrunted the entire system. more bay area people are taking public transit, the reason may be higher gas prices. cal train ridership was up 12% in june compared to a year ago. bart saw an increase of 8%, ridership for the valley transportation authority is up more than 7%. 11 agencies were surveyed. ac transit and santa cruz met throw were metro were the only ones that reported a decline

pg pg&e is still working on a power outage there where a truck slammed into a pole. that shut down the road and knocked out power to 3800 customers. they have restored power to all but a few and will finish around 2:00. the truck will be removed and the road re-opened after that. the driver suffered min error injuries. police are going over video in their search for gunmen who stormed into an armored car warehouse last night. the robbery happened before 11:00 p.m.

and the warehouse on north point parkway west of stoney point road. police are releasing few details but do say they are not sure how many robbers there were in spite of earlier reports there were two. they say they got away with some money but won't say how much and locked the steel doors behind them trapping two employees inside, one of them called 911. >> we had to free the employees because the doors were locked, secured and once we did we found they were unharmed. >> the sonoma county alliance has offered a reward for information on the robers. police have not released a description. a florida judge is ordering casey anthony out of hiding and back to orlando for probation. she has received death threats since he was acquitted but today a judge said she must return to orlando for probation in a check fraud case.

her attorney objected saying he already served probation during her time in jail but the judge disagreed. she must begin her probation in two weeks. authorities say they will keep her address private. the white house claims that comments by gop presidential candidates at last night's debate prove they are not on the side of the working class public. eight presidential hopefuls tried to distinguish themselves at iowa state university but all deliver the same message against president obama's handling of the economy. today the white house is rebuking them all for saying they would refuse a deal on tax increases, even if they were outweighed by spending cuts 10- 1. the debate also got testy. >> you said the era of small government was over. that sounds a lot more like barack obama if you ask me. >> she said he has got a titanium spine, it is not her

spine we are worried about, it is her results, please stop because you are killing us. >> one man that could shake up the race is rick perry, he is expected to announce tomorrow. today we will learn how california students are performing. the department of education is releasing the results of its tested. they measure how well students in grades 2 threw 11 perform in math, reading, writing, science and history. those test results come on the heels of a new report about california's high school graduation rate. 94,000 students did not get a diploma last year, that is 18% in the bay area. oakland had a drop out rate of 37, santa clara 17% and san francisco 11%. the state says this new numbers cannot be compared to past years because it is using a new more accurate formula. before the first day of school on monday san francisco

officials are sending out a message for parents, make sure your kids show up for class. absentism has dropped but they remind children it is illegal to keep children out of school. they sent a thousand letters out to parents whose kids had a high rate of absentism last year. a few hours ago a school system received a big check from the big lots discount chain as one of 35 winners in a video contest. this is a video submitted by the elementary school for the lots to give video contest. it is one of 116 entries from across the nation and one of 30 to win second place. 1 parent put the whole thing together. >> i have been doing a project filming the kids throughout the year and so we edited some film together and then we had a real need for our school to have a

those higher clouds wrapping back around giving us partly sunny skies but there is plenty of fog and low clouds and some of those higher clouds as well, west-southwest fairfield 16 but again it was stronger yesterday, temperatures a few locations above, a few below. a lot of 70s. santa rosa did dip to 49 this morning. i mean that is a little bite to the morning air. that is cold. otherwise upper 50s and 60s, hayward was 60, still now at 66. mid-70s for some so temperatures close to yesterday, maybe 1 or two degrees warmer for inland areas. a lot of these clouds may put the cap on the additional warming because they are thickening up from southern california but the key though this system right up there is very strong for this time of year. it is going to by late saturday into sunday sweep into the north and lift that fog and cool down the inland areas but today a thick morning fog gave way to mostly sunny partly cloudy skies put the cooling

trend started yesterday. today is kind of the tweener day or push or just in between but it looks like conditional coolic and further cooling will continue sunday, monday, and tuesday and most of next week, maybe a little bump by the middle. a little breezy at times, fog away from the coast. but more closer to it. 90 clear lake but 60s, 70s elsewhere or very very low 80s, temperaturings slightly below average to near inland but still lower close to the bay. those are your temperatures, upper 80s towards antioch and brentwood. 77 san jose, 77 santa clara. same for spail 0 alto, 73 san mateo, a lot of 50s 60s on the coast dealing with that big fog bank. a cooling trend into the weekend tori and then early next week as well. >> all right. sounds good. >> thank you. >> we just learned a man who

walked away from his home after waking up from a coma. he was unsteady and had trouble speaking. police say he was located overnight. he was considered an at risk missing person because he suffers from a seizure disorder. some green jobs came to san jose today. the solar panel manufacture sole focus cut the ribbon for its new headquarters. sole focus has installed panels in the united states and europe. clean technology is one of the growth areas so solar companies are an important part of our future and we have some of the leading companies here and adding to that today. >> the new sole focus headquarters employs 90 people in a 44,000 square foot building. scuba divers in monterrey

the breaking economic news just coming in, the italian government approves new austerity measures to balance its budget by 2013, hoping to calm the fears over the european debt crisis. the markets like look they are ending the week on a positive note, the dow up 128, nasdaq up 19, s&p up 7. hundreds of thousands of postal workers may soon be out of a job. the u.s. postal service is considering cutting as many as 120,000 positions. postal officials say they need to cut more than 30% of its staff by 2015 in order to be viable. last year the postal service lost more than $8.5 billion. thousands of music fans are flooding into golden gate park now in san francisco for this year's outside land festival. the festival started at noon

today. crews spent most of year making final preparations for the popular festival. organizers expect as many as 180,000 people to attend. we have a list of performers and a schedule of events on our website, ktvu.com, just click on the local music tab. the annual san jose jazz summerfest starts tonight ab continues tomorrow and sunday. 10 stages are set up around the downtown area. admission is $15 tonight and $20 for tomorrow or sunday. the festival opens at 5:00 p.m. the outside lands festival and the san jose jazz jazz festival are just two of the events this weekend. the 49ers kickoff their preseason tonight in new orleans against the saints. this follows last night's return of the silver and black to oakland.
