for ken wayne. the search for a missing two- year-old girl and her father is still active tonight, six days after they were last seen in the sacramento area. more from berkeley with the latest details on that amber alert. >> reporter: well, just over an hour ago, ken, i received two e- mails from a pair of fbi investigators telling me that there are no major updates in this investigation. but they say that investigators are still actively searching, an amber alert is still very much in effect here. over the interstate 80 here, they are in effect . it has the most important details of the vehicle the police say the father could be driving, a green toyota, 3 xrm 111 is the license plate number. mourad samaan was supposed to return madeline samaan-fay to her mother, but never showed up. the mother called authorities tuesday to report the girl

missing. mourad samaan learned that the girl's mother would be getting custody, he is egyptian, and speaks spanish, madeline samaan- fay weighs 50 pounds, there are signs above many of the freeways above the state, and drivers say they're watching closely for the pair. >> i didn't get the full details, but hopefully seeing the amber alerts on the freeway, we'll kind of get in the loop. i'll watch out for her. >> again, that vehicle description is a 1998 green toyota fore runner, 3 xrm 111 is the california license plate. investigators are worried the father may be trying to leave the country with the little girl, so they are regularly watching the airports looking for the pair, live, berkeley, channel 2 action news. developing news right now, substantial fire is burning,

flames breaking out at about 2:30 this afternoon near the lake in napa county near knoxville road. live now, pictures from news chopper 2. cal fire is responding right now, saying the smoky fire has consumed about 100 acres but they say it is not threatening any structures right now. reporting now, very hot and dry there. 96 degrees and 14% humidity with gusts of about 16 miles per hour may be blowing smoke towards the northeast, as well as interstate 505. we'll of course bring you many more details on this fire, happening right now near the lake in napa county, all the details tonight on the 10:00 news. and a car wash and barbecue held in oakland today to raise money for the family of the three-year-old boy killed by gunfire in oakland on monday. >> our baby.

>> organizers hope their show of support will help carlos' nava's family and send the message that violence is not wanted on the street. >> i hope to stop the violence, because like i say this was an innocent child. he didn't do anything to anybody, he doesn't deserve this. but like i say we're all here to support him and his family. >> his father was on hand, thinking people for their help. lawrence denard of oakland has been charged with his murder, the car wash and fundraiser starts tomorrow at 64th and national boulevard from 11- 7:00. and a mystery tonight in hayward. firefighters respond to what they thought was a retained fire, instead finding a woman's burning body. more on the scene, we learned it may not be a crime? john? >> reporter: heather this is the spot where the woman's body burned last night. you can see burn marks on the pavement and concrete wall. they're trying to find a

suspect. the police rushed here at industrial park and hayward at about 10:00 last night. it was first reported as a -- as a structure, but investigators found a burned body . >> it could be a drug deal gone wrong. >> reporter: one spokesperson was not surprised by the death. >> you have to accept it sometimes and see it for what it is. and then if you don't -- it eats at you. >> reporter: less than 50 yards from where the body burned up is this dumpster, where i found a bag that appears to be evidence, including burning clothing and cash, so i called police, and they responded quickly. then came a crime scene technician. investigators are not talking today but we met a friend who lived with the woman at the hotel. she says the woman was 29, named brandy, and left a piece of paper with numbers and names on it in the room.

>> when i got home, one girl who called me told me she had priors on setting herself on fire. >> reporter: with say they have not ruled -- police say they have not ruled outside side. >> i think somebody else did it. i don't think she did it. >> i talked to the coroner's official this afternoon. they have not identified the woman yet, but say there is no obvious trauma behind the burns. and it has been a violent 24 hours in oakland with five separate shootings and two deaths across the city. just after 12:40 a man was shot to death in the fruit vale district, another man wounded by gunfire a block away. later, a man walking on fifth avenue and 18th street was shot in the neck during a drive by attack. later, a 17-year-old boy was hit in a drive by, this time on lake shore avenue. the police have identified the

second man shot to death in the ring of violence. ra zz o was driving on maddux drive, when he was hit, crashing his car more than a block away from where he was shot. no arrests were made yet in the shootings. the homicides bring to the number killed in oakland, 75. and the family whose child was mauled by the pit bull says he doesn't blame the child, it was a freak accident. he said the pit bulls were loving animals. he found his wife, darla in the home with bite marks on her face and arm. one of the couple's dogs was nearby. police shot the dog later. they did not determine why the dog attacked. they are doing further studies. and representative bachmann can celebrate a win today in the iowa straw poll. more on the first test for

republican contenders, craig? >> reporter: and good evening to you, ken, it is certainly a mock election but certainly gives ideas to the candidates. as you said, michelle bachmann from waterloo, iowa, coming out on top, very happy, thanking the supporters, getting on the bus, going out for a little while. she is back here for a few minutes right now, but will be in iowa tomorrow, as will rick perry, who will also run. the numbers here showed up as 17,000, with the total ballots cast today. >> craig, i know there were 17,000 votes cast today. bachmann getting 28% of those. how significant of a victory if you want to call it is this for bachmann? >> reporter: well, it is a big victory. you know she is from iowa, she needed a victory, she has --

will do all the sunday shows tomorrow. if she did them, and didn't get this today it would be what went wrong? but the momentum, she needs cash, plenty of it down the row. you know ron paul came 250 votes behind, and tim pawlenty as well, a strong showing, who is from iowa. and strong support, a lot of attention focused on these three candidates, now they come out on the top of the straw poll and are trying to get the headlines back from rick perry, who announced he is getting back in the race, never a dull moment. >> well talking about rick perry throwing his hat in the race, his name was not on the ballot there in iowa. but he did have a showing, did he not? >> reporter: absolutely, came in 6th. 718 votes, a straw poll, they had a write-in portion, 1700 votes, a very strong showing,

can. several people are recovering tonight after a crash in sonoma county. the chp says two pickup trucks collided head-on on lakeville highway, near old lakeville road in petaluma. the accident shut down lakeville road for more than two hours. officers say alcohol may have been a factor in that crash. the search continues tonight for a man involved in a home invasion robbery in san rafael. shortly after the robbery on c- way yesterday, the homeowner called police describe all four suspects. officers spotted the four in a car, matching the robbers' descriptions, officers arrested them and found a third hiding under a car. the police are looking for the fourth suspect, an african- american male, 20-25 years old,

5'10" with a nearly bald head. and more than 200 volunteers stand out all over oakland to paint murals and work in the parks, why their effort is needed more. >> grab shovels and work. >> reporter: one at a time, they pitched in. >> and we're helping the community, and it is hard work. >> reporter: many of the volunteers here live in oakland, and they want to help to improve their cities. >> not like everything is going to change overnight, but add a little more pride in the neighborhood. >> reporter: the tree planting area here is one of 25 different sites in the city where they have volunteer efforts like this. it is part of a coordinated effort they're calling throw down for the town. they are working together to mobilize the efforts. >> there is mural painting and senior citizen volunteering. >> reporter: in some cases it is work that oakland city employees used to do before the

recession. >> the volunteers across the street, that was a tree division. we don't even have a planting crew anymore. >> reporter: she is the oakland park survivor, saying the volunteers help. >> for the moment it is a good bandaid, maybe it can get us through the really hard times. >> reporter: and it is not just a once a year effort. she says that neighbors clean up this park every other weekend. some volunteers say the reality of budget cuts and bad economy have spurred them to action. >> we have to live here before we could afford to sell, and move. now we can't. so we have to make it work. >> we're a community. we have to share the work and put a little ourselves into it. >> reporter: he says it is a lesson he wants his son to learn and live by as well. in west oakland, ktvu. and san francisco families preparing kids for school next week got a little help today at a backpack giveaway in the

neighborhood. they handed out 300 backpacks, all filled with papers and pencils and other supplies. the parents were given more information as there were school uniforms for the children. for the past eight years, the magic back-to-school celebration helped families prepare the children for school. and kidnappers in pakistan have grabbed an american executive. several gunmen got into the home of warren weinstein last night, taking advantage of a tradition of offering wine and field. he works for a company, je austin, no group has claimed responsibility yet. the pakistan taliban recently kidnapped a swiss couple. but the investigators say most of them are carried out by gangs hoping to collect a large amount of money ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ cuba is celebrating castro's 85th birthday today. the former leader did not show up last night for a special concert in his honor. and neither did the current

jose, 80s, the live camera looking at this towards the san francisco bay. it is just beautiful, haze out there and a breeze, but san francisco right now checks in at 63 degrees. our forecast story is this. for tonight, mostly clear skies, a bit of a breeze out there. tomorrow, some morning fog and temperatures are coming down a few degrees for the second half of the weekend. next week, though, a nice rebound in temperatures. next week, could see dense fog, clear skies right now, but overnight the fog regroups, coast side, could see a shallow layer pushing back into the bay. overnight areas, 50s, san jose dropping into the 40s the past two weekends, likely the first thing sunday. outside tomorrow, as you can see we'll have a sun and cloud mix, starting out with partly cloudy skies, temperatures not warming up too much, mainly in the low 60s for afternoon highs. torrowhe area of low pressure is moving in, we'll

bring in cooling. tuesday, wednesday, high pressure rebuilds from southern california, and with that we'll warm up our numbers, especially inland. talking about a few neighborhoods approaching the 90-degree mark. here is the forecast model showing you that the shallow marine layer, pushing back into the bay, pulling back near the coast into the afternoon hours, partly cloudy skies for the beaches, more sunshine around the bias bay, as well as the inland spots. 50 degrees tomorrow morning, patchy fog, winds pick up, tomorrow afternoon, 60s, 70s, 80s, santa rosa, 82, oakland at 70, these neighborhoods, most temperatures are coming down about four-eight degrees for the highs today. san jose, 66, and the extended forecast, temperatures about the same into monday as well.
