demonstration last hunt points out the dangers protests pose to passengers. >> our job isn't to censor people. >> reporter: she calls the decision a drastic overreaction. >> i know we want our passengers safe and i am an advocate for that always. but what we did was cut off our nose despite our face. >> reporter: again, another live luke at ktvu's live view camera. there you see protesters. they are holding signs that are mentioning stolen lives and talking about how they are concerned about the shooting that took place and bart reaction to it. we have learned the aclu was set to meet with bart to end cell phone censorship and bart's operator are calling for a state investigation into the safety protocol and sitsm failures. protesters are gathering at the

civic center platform. we will be monitoring and let you know if it results in a interruption of service. david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. thehooker group made good on its threat. it says bart violated free speech protections and the group hacked into a bart website and posted contact information for 2,000 bart customers. ktvu's maureen naylor examined that group and learned interesting information, she will have that at 5:30. our coverage continues as david stevenson mentioned, you can track changes on our website, www.ktvu.com, click on the bay area tab. >> reporter: residents are evacuated and a neighbor is on edge after a gas leak in oakland. ktvu's paul chambers is live with what caused this leak.

>> reporter: people have mixed emotions, some are upset, can't get to their cars, inside their hopes, other are happy to be okay. they hoped to have this wrapped up an hour ago but listen, you can hear gas coming from the exposed pipe. there is also debris being -- coming out of the ground. here is what we know, 2:15 this afternoon a pg&e contractor was working, while working he struck and cut a gas line. it's unsure what hit that line and the leak caused for evacuations from the area. >> the gas smell is very strong. very strong. and my wife, she has asthma and she can barely take it. so it's bad. it's bad. >> i mean, how can they dig and not know where the pipes are and how deep and where they are

hit and killed him. police and the fbi arrested him on information provided by oakland police. >> he is still in las vegas. we don't have abexact date as to when he will return to california. >> they are not disclosing what the information is that led him to torrance but he is believed to have been the driver. police are dealing with a new surge of violence. three shootings in four hours. we took pictures for you here last night. the victim was shot in the head but is alive. this is at 12 and east 22 street. rob roth is live where residents are praying for their safety. >> we are standing outside the community center where parents have begun gathering inside to discuss ways to help build a stronger community which they are hoping will bring an end to

new figures suggest if you have a dog you should keep it on a short leash. a stolenpet pet, there has been an increase in dog left it.

so far this year 224 dog owners reported their pets stolen. up from 150 pets last year. they receiverred reports of stollen dogs. some bank customers may have trouble getting cash in certain areas of san francisco. ktvu's alex savage tells us why one bank decided to close atms earlier in the evening. >> reporter: some customers don't like this idea. if it's after 8:00 at night, don't bother putting your card into this wells fargo machine because it will be closed. it is shutting down certain atms in the interest of safety. >> reporter: if you need to take cash out of this atm, do it early. they are closing certain machines at night to keep

customers safe. >> safety thing but it's too early to be closed for other people that are out and doing stuff. >> reporter: this atm at mission and 16th street closes at 11:00. the one at mission and 22, shuts down at 8:00. some people say that's too early. >> it is a pain. we hang out here all the time. you go out with your friends and you want to get money and they are closed. >> reporter: it's up to customers to be cautious she says. >> you have to be aware. usually if i am at the atm i make sure no one is behind me. >> reporter: a spokeswoman said the company looked at crime statistics for the areas around its atm and that's how they decided to close certain machines earlier. some say no matter what the hours are they like to swipe during the day. >> i get my money during hours

inside the bank. i don't need a lot of money after 11:00 at night. >> reporter: other banks say they keep their atms open 24 hours but but them inside a secure location. wells fargo says they will close three atms earlier. for now those are two in mission and one at civic center. alex savage ktvu channel 2 news. caltrans issued an alert to drivers on i-680 because crews are scheduled to repave the number 2 lane on the south bound side. the work begins at 9:00 p.m. and ends at 5:00 a.m. during that time workers will close the on ramp. selling shark fins.

bow baric joined lawmakers backing the bill against selling, trading or possessing shark fins. calling it a crisis. the reason is the sharks are pulled on board, their fins are cut off and they are loan back in the water to die. the fins are used in a soup. california researchers said they detected a spike in radiation in san diego from a japanese nuclear plan. they studied readings taken last march a two weeks after the earthquake and tsunami. it found higher than normal levels but they say it posed no health threat. it took them hours to measure any decay. gorgeous weekend. let's go to our chief meteorologist bill martin to talk about a warm up. >> slowly each day. nice couple days headed our

. we have breaking news right now. these are live pictures from inside the civic center bart station where you can see a lot of uniformed police in riot gear. what is happening is that there is a major protest going on on

the platform there. the platform is so crowded they have shut down escalator service and the stairs leading down to the platform so no one can reach the platform. all of this stems from last week when bart shut down cell phone service inside some of its stations to prevent a protest from going on. some people were furious about that. over the weekend a group hacked into the bart website, that group is helping toker this protest. let's see what's happening. maybe the station is shut down right now because that train just went through without stopping. we are working to get more information. we should tell you -- let's see if we can hear what this man is saying right here. >> he told people there they had 2 minutes to comply. i am assuming to comply with

stopping the protest or leaving the platform there. we should say here the camera we are using right now works off of cell phone lines so that indicates bart hasn't shut down cell phone service as it did last week. again, protesters continue to gather there and we saw a bart train go by a moment ago. let's see if we can hear what he is saying right now. >> very difficult to hear. he is drowned out by the protesters. they are carrying signs that say i believe in free speech, family members, stolen lives. lof this began when there was a individual, homeless man on the bart platform that civic center bart station, he was shot and killed by two bart police officers. he was arm would two knives.

more breaking news right now from san francisco. the civic center bart station where it is closed at we speak. we saw a moment ago a trail roll through the station. there are lot of police in riot gear. they told the protestsers they have 2 minutes to leave -- protesters they have 2 minutes to leave that station. all of this stems from last week where there was a planned protest at some of the bart stations and as a result bart shut down cell phone services because the protesters were organizing the protest. that set off a firestorm, especially concerning free speech rights. they are saying they had no rights to shut down the cell phone service. you see the results tonight. lot of protesters.

sounds like a train is coming in. let's see if it stops. nope. well, it's -- the train is not going to stop. it is rolling right through. right now the bart platform is so crowded with protesters and riot police that's why they it down. they have been told they have 2 minutes to leave. judging by the pictures doesn't look like too many of them have left. earlier they were carrying signs saying we believe in free speech. and protesting police brutality. ktvu's david stevenson is above the civic center bart station. what does it look like up there? >> reporter: well, i can tell you this, 5 minutes ago 100 protesters marched behind me, went town the steps to the platform and now you can see them walking down market

street. they are blocking the eastbound lanes on market street, heading down to the foot of market. there are about 100 people and more sort of joining in following behind right now. we haven't seen much of a police presence long market street. and so far -- so far there hasn't been much of a police presence. they are proceeding slowly down the street. this is going to slow down traffic on market street. short of imitates a protest selve weeks ago. cars will have a hard time getting through right now. >> david, is traffic being effected at all on market street? it's difficult to tell. looks like for the most part the protesters are staying on

the sidewalk. >> reporter: actually quite a few of them are on the street. that ambulance had to go into the middle of the street. we see police in riot gear at the civic center bart station. they are looking around, looking for the protesters who headed down market street. traffic is held up a little bit on market right now now. the march is proceeding slowly. down by 6th street right now. everyone seems to be figuring out what they are going to do. >> protesters are there and police are there, have you found people who hoped to go down into the bart station but unable to because the escalator is closed? >> reporter: not so far. we didn't notice people being evacuated from this particular exit. the only folks we saw were the

protesters and they got down a few steps, realized it was shut, came up, looked around and headed down market street. you can see some of these bart police wearing that riot gear, heading down another interest in to civic center bart station. we are not sure if they are checking for other protesters to open the station or keep it closed. >> david, let's get practical here, the other option if they need to take part bart, powell, union or 14. >> reporter: they are a little bit of a hike. a number of people are marching behind me now. some are consumerrers. powell street is a possibility but check the bart website for that information to see which stations are closed right now and when civic center bart station will open. >> right now civic center bart station is closed.

do you know about muni? muni also uses that, do we know what muni is doing? >> reporter: this station would be shut for muni as well. that was the situation several weeks ago. we haven't confirmed that yet. we know they are not allowing anyone at all to go down into the civic center bart station. >> thank you. joining us now on the phone is ken wayne. where are you? can you hear us? okay. well -- ken, go ahead. where are you? >> reporter: that civic center bart station. there is about 15 bart police officers in their helmets and batons and handcuffs. they just now evacuated the platform area. the police officers gave the protesters a dispersal order and said they had a fixed

amount of time to leave. apparently that time has come and gone and dozens of protesters just left the platform where the trains stopped at the civic center bart station and they, for the most part are gone, there are still reporters and photographers here. but looks like the protesters left without being arrested. they were threatened with arrest if they didn't disperse. so they have gone but the bart station is still closed. trains have been coming by but not stopping. so passengers can't get on or get off at the civic center bart station. that's where things stand. there racouple dozen police officers down here -- there are a couple dozen police officers down here on the platform and the press is feltering out and it's also deserted -- always deserted. >> again, that station is closed. we are staying on top of this

protesters and he told us they are walking away from the station right now. there were dozens of them and police worried after they started chanting and holding signs bart made the decision to not to allow the trains to stop. they closed the escalators and they ordered the protesters to clear the scene and in the past few minutes, that is now the case. >> these protest were organized by a group that calls themselves anonymous. today ktvu's maureen naylor spent the day learning about anonymous. >> reporter: in those live pictures you seen them wearing red shirts, that's what anonymous asked them to do. they posted this trailer calling for a peaceful protest. and nobody knows who or how

. we continue to follow breaking news happening in san francisco. a live picture for you. this is on the streets here, minutes after a protest was broken up inside the civic center bart station. the protesters left the station under order be police andwear working towards the water along market street. the next bart station is powell street, near union scare.

this was all timed to coincide with rush hour. it's 5:45 now, this started at 5:00 tonight. we had dozens of protesters inside the civic center bart station and we have these pictures to show you what it looked like. you see here passengers inside the bart train. you see a protesters holding a sign, free speech. and looks like that train is not able to move. after this is when bart made the decision to close that station down to trains. we saw a number of trains coming in and speeding through the station and not stopping and quite a bit of this guy, surround by police, talking on his cell phone. lot of the people as part of the protest are calling for free speech in reference to bart's decision to shut down cell service inside some stations at previous protest last week. it is a developing situation and the newest information is the civic center bart station

is not open. we saw trains speeding through. we learned bart decided to close the down escalator so people could not access the civic center bart station platform. we have reporters on trains, on the streets. david stevenson shows us the protestsers. we will keep our cruise in place. when we have new information we will bring it to you. some students missed their first day of school today but the parents say it's not their fault. they lined up outside the school district on franklin street, many claimed the district's enrollment process is forcing them to go to schools an hour away. >> these are 11-year-old girls told to get on a bus with a transfer. >> i hope they do something to fix it. i can't imagine they will do that with every parent. no way. >> the placement center says it tries to allocate students in a

fair way but there are too many children. the san francisco fire station known as the bizzest in the country could be relocated. fire station 1 is set to move to a new station on folsom street between 5th and 6th. it is closer to the corridor where they are often called out to. it will also make room for a new wing for the museum. when it comes to job seeking social contacts help men more than woman. ane study of 12,000 people, men with specialized experience are 12% more likely to get a job when social contacts recruit them. for women it's about even. they will find a job either way. >> reporter: nice skies might not finish last but a study

. >> new information and breaking news we have been following for you, in san francisco, protesters are on the move and we just heard from bart that the powell station is now closed. powell station is the station directly to the east of the civic center bart station where the original protest started. we just learned the powell street bart station is closed. these are live pictures here. this takes you back to civic

center bart station. a lot of police officers on the street. this was the site of the original protest. started at 5:00 tonight. within minutes bart closed the station. it did not have trains stop. they went right on threw and closed the escalators. people are now able to get off at civic center bart station but you can't get on. civic center bart station and powell bart are now closed. another potentially crippling shut down is limiting the faa. >> this has a real world impact. this is not just a thing about a government shut down or the debt or some bigger issue. this had a real world impact. >> earlier this month congress came to an agreement to end a partial faa shut down but it was only temporary. now they could be shut down again because there has been
