a protest snarls the evening commute as demonstrators upset with bart police are joined by the hacker group anonymous. >> it started under ground then moved to surface streets against bart police use of deadly force and controversial decision last week to cut off cell phone service to bart passengers. bart service was interrupted or completely shutdown at four stations in downtown san francisco. we have team coverage tonight of the protest and it's impact of people heading home during the even commute. we start with ktvu ken wayne who is live where the protest ended. ken. >> reporter: julie, protester did succeed once again in shutting down bart service. but all in all things were much

more peaceful this time around. it started in the civic center station, protesters angry over two things, shootings involving bart police and the shutdown of cell phone service last week. some compare the cell blockage to the actions of dictators overseas. >> over reaction -- >> i, you know, i think i lack the word to adequately characterize what that is. >> can you hear me now? >> reporter: some protesters wore mask from the music v. it symbolized the hacker group anonymous. >> that stands for our rights. >> reporter: while protesters build on the platform, trains go through the station without stopping. cell phone service was not shutdown. >> as long as we stick with the plans, we're going to play as

well as we can. that includes leaving cell phone service on. >> reporter: there was some tension, one bart rider shoved protesters trying to keep train doors from closing. protesters fanned out to the streets to blocking traffic on market street then invading the montgomery stations for a time. bart closed those stations until the crowd dispersed. >> i'm stuck over here. i have stuff to do today. >> reporter: this blind man was trying to get his brother to sfo for a flight home, turning into a big hassle. >> that's putting it mildly. i'm trying to get him back to the airport. >> it's been a very long day. our customers are exhausted. and at the end of the day, they just want to go home. >> reporter: linden johnson

would not talk about the decision not to turn off cell phone service tonight. but no difference, protesters did not take over train cars and were a lot less vocal this time. live in san francisco. >> now to oakland where amber lee looks into how this evening's protest effected train service and passengers. amber. >> reporter: we wanted to find out how the protest impacted commuters away from downtown san francisco. east bay commuters heading home after a day at work in downtown san francisco. they told us they were prepared for potential delays. many say their employers sent e- mails advising them to leave work early. >> i left work a little bit early today because i didn't want to be stuck like last time. >> reporter: this man told us he learned of the protesting

watching the news. >> i was watching this morning and saw what happened over the weekend. i just decided to come out a little early and leave a little early to beat the traffic. >> reporter: at 5:27 we heard the first announcement over the public address system advising passengers about the disruption in service. there were frequent updates. >> the station is currently closed this time. >> reporter: later on, passengers from san francisco arriving in oakland told us about delays ranging from 15 minutes up to a half hour. >> i did call my wife and i was going to ask her to pick me up but then i guess it started working. >> reporter: a supervisor told us these bart employees in their vest boarded trains in san francisco to be extra eyes and ears. there was also a visible police presence. they calmly just went through, you need to get on the next

train out. they're going to close the station. they encouraged all of them to line up and get in there. >> everyone we spoke with says they're relieved the delays were minor. they call it a glitch in their commute. reporting live at the west oakland bart station. federal communication commissions has begun an investigation into bart cutting off cell phone service last week. the fcc said it has received compliance and now gathering information from bart. federal regulators say they'll look at whether bart has the right to eliminate cell phone service because of concerns about possible protest. bart says it does have the right citing public say. fcc said it would investigate the hacking group posting some information of the passengers over the weekend. aclu getting involved in ktvu with posted a letter of civil liberties group. it says bart's decision to

disrupt cell phone service was unjustified and says bart should not repeat that. what we know about the group called anonymous and its motives. oakland police officers pursuit of two carjacking suspects ended with their arrest this evening but not before a frightening crash. an officer responding hit another car in the intersection of 35th avenue and international boulevard. the collision happened at about 6:30 tonight. while it looks bad, no one was hurt. witnesses say police car had its lights flashing. police caught up with those two suspects on east 16th. carjacking victim flagged down police victim. captain joiner told ktvu news the man pulled out guns but he didn't shoot at them because the park was crowded with people. he eventually caught up to one

of the suspects. only on 2, they've had to wait their turn now for years, but now that the case is over, rita williams had learned exclusively that hayward police were finally able to interview philip and nancy about another bay area kidnapping. >> this is one of those cases that nags at you through your whole career. >> reporter: that case is the mystery what happened to 9-year- old mckayla almost 23 years ago. they finally got to interview two people they hoped would have the answers, philip and nancy, the confessed kidnappers of another girl with striking similarities. >> both of the interviews lasted well over two hours. neither of the interviews revealed any direct link to the mckayla garrett case, our case. >> meaning they did not con press to doing it?

september. the missing documentation includes logbooks, inspection records, purchase orders for pipes and x-ray reports. investigators found that the utility used bad or nonexistent data to prove the safety of the line stretching to san francisco. oakland police today announced the arrest of second suspect in connection with a drive-by shooting that killed 3- year-old carlos. the shooting happened last monday at 64th and international. the suspect is identified as 22- year-old willie toren. police say he was the driver ott car. toren was arrested by las vegas police friday night and is awaiting extradition now to california. oakland police credit witnesses coming forward with helping solve this crime. >> most of the information we received are from citizens who are just as distraught and sick to their stomach. >> police arrested the suspected gunman last week. he's scheduled to appear in

court in 2 weeks. san francisco trance gender who received an angry letter from the dmv clerk reached an out of court settlement. she sued the dmv and the clerk accusing them of violating her policy. she updated her name and gender information at the office. 4 days later the dmv clerk sent her a letter warning her of internal damnation. they ended up suspending that clerk and he quit in december. the settlement is for $55,000, 40,000 of that from the state, 15,000 from demartina. doctors offering positive news about injured -- they say he's made significant progress. he's now able to follow some commands and ability to interact has increased greatly. he's recovering from brain injury sustained during a

oakland school district has put ahead of it police force on administrative leave. she's on paid leave and information is underway. last week sources told ktvu started using the n word. they're saying he made an offhand remark. the school district calls it a personal matter and isn't providing details. they're dedicated to helping coke land use and black views in particular. this was back to school and some parents say they are devastated at some of their kids. john tells us why they are so upset. hundreds of san francisco parents are -- they didn't get to go to the cool of their courts. >> we want to go to a different
