let's go back to the desk. copper thieves are targeting san francisco schools. two schools in the sunset district have been hit. ktvu channel 2 reporter jade hernandez has more on why copper is in such high demand. >> reporter: that is right. the sign here at the school says no trespassing but thieves are not paying attention to that sign. in fact, right here in the sunset direct thieves are after copper. it puts copper between $2-$4 a pound. we are live at the alice fong yu school. they struck the school last week on wednesday, thursday, friday, and saturday. targeting a construction site on campus. police put a additional patrols in plain closed officers in the area. the team also has a security guard. the police department has a description of the thief but are not willing to release it since this is an ongoing investigation. this isn't the only school

administration dealing with left. the french school located at 12:01 ortega street had employee witness thieves removing the gutters. students are back to school here at alice fong yu. reporting live jade hernandez ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:02. overnight news this morning. two people in police custody after a robbery and police pursuit. the two suspects were arrested at benedict and daily drive early this morning. police say the chase started when the two men allegedly robbed a nearby score. they say one of the sus -- when the suspects finally pulled over they tried to run away. they were captured by police and a canine unit. overnight a bomb squad

destroyed a suspicious object. a taxi driver notified police at 8:00 after finding a shopping bag on the southbound platform. they x-rayed the bag but couldn't find out what was inside. at midnight they finally destroyed it. cal train was delayed. three people are being treated for serious injuries after an accident involving an ac don sit. investigatings say a ford torr race -- the driver was the only person on the bus and not injured. its hit a snag. ktvu kraig debro is live until oakland to tell us about a special meeting that is taking place today.

>> reporter: there will be a special meeting and a staff recommendation but the staff recommendation is no different than it was back in late july when the mtc voted in the first place to move to san francisco. the meet willing be held here at commission headquarters. they already voted 12-2 to move into the city. that's when they stepped in to say the vote violated the state law on open meetings. this building is where the mtc wants to go. by the end of next year the mtc and the bay conservation and development commission would rock wave. mtc would intent for -- the mtc runs the bay area toll authority. it violated the brown act the open meetings law.

a state senator wants to hold committee hearings on whether they can use toll money to buy and renovate the building in san francisco. wait there is more. the city of oakland is pushing this building. it's in downtown oakland as an alternate. the city of oakland is not only concerned about the brown act but losing all the monetary and benefits that come with having such a large agency with all of its employees leave the city of oakland at such a critical time. as to the allegations that they violateds brown act they don't believe they did. but the reason they are holding this rivvo today they not violating the stay law. and plus they are moving. reporting live in oakland kraig debro. we are learning this morning that president obama will unvail a major jobs plan next month. the white house says the plan

will contain fresh new ideas for speeding up job growth. coming up at 6:150 we'll have a live report from our washington, d.c. newsroom with the expected focus of the president's plan. california senator barbara boxer will be in the bay area today. she will tour the lawrence berkeley national laboratory. at the news conference boxer will discuss transportation bill she has introduce and the importance of transportation projects to the economy. federal stimulus funds were used to pay for a construction project currently under way at the caldecott to add a four bore. the mist feeing of the parks. they will talk about how to collect ideas from you the -- they will be cochairing the event. right now budget cuts are threatening to close four state parks in marin. also tonight bart holds an open

at the bay bridge tunnel we have a little bit of a pickup top developing. now then we are doing contra costa county. pittsburgh and bay point still looks good. a touch of small traffic on 680. if you driving across the carquinez bridge so far so good on interstate 80. let's go to steve. thank you kindly, sal. low clouds and fog. there is more of a fog bank today than we had yesterday. it was mainly on the coast and worked its way very thick. today looks to be higher. 50s and 60s. 50s to 70s on the coast. 70s to upper 70s around the bay. 70s and 80s for the inland areas and a few low 90s. a few high clouds might drift

by. mainly 50s and a more pronounced sea breeze today. nothing rip roaring. the low cloud deck has made it into many portions of the north bay which had nick fog yesterday. west, northwest, west, southwest that 17 is stronger than yesterday. not a big deal. it is stronger. that will equal two to three degrees cooler. the high on the southwest just depends one little turn in the atmosphere. the coast has been dealing with a lot of fog. today is no exception. they will continue to see that. increasing low clouds and fog. a little cooler. the coast has to deal with a lot of the gray. if et does it will be in the 60s to low 70s. inland we will get the sun but bring the temps down a few degrees. 70s and 80s for many unless you are well away from it than low

welcome back to the morning news. time now is 6:13. one man is in jail after a dog fight escalated to involve the animals owners. carla was playing outside with her four children when her neighbor's pit bull appeared. she was afraid a -- a dog fight broke out when carla's husband couldn't pull them apart he attacked the pit bull with a machete that is when the pit bull owners attacked carlo. >> they scratched me. like i say they pulled my hair.

pulled my face. >> carla's husband was arrested on charges of animal cruelty. neither of the dogs were seriously injured in the fight. in big sur pg&e crews are taking down three miles of power lines. it's part of an effort to save the california condor that is endangered. the old wooden poles block the bird's flight path and caused a handful of deadly bird collisions. the new power lines will be buried three feet under ground at a cost of $4 million. president obama fighting back against the critics who say he has no plan to create new jobs. alison burns is live in our washington, d.c. newsroom with the announcement coming this morning. the president will give a big speech next month about new jobs. >> reporter: we will have to wait for all the details. the president is not making the

big job speech until after the labor day holiday. he wraps up his bus tour today with two town hall meetings in illinois. he has been using it to boost jobs, tax cuts, and trade tools. he realizes americans are looking to him for solutions. >> what i continue to believe is ultimately the buck stops with me. i will be accountable. ultimately they say look, he's the president, we think he has good intentions but we are impatient and we want to see things move faster. >> reporter: the president is also expected to detail his plan for reducing the deficit. he said his biggest challenge will be getting congress on board. he leaves tomorrow for a ten- day vacation. more than that during any next update in an hour. time is 6:15. striking verizon workers plan to picket a downtown san francisco store at noontime

today. it's part of a nation-wide protest against verizon. 45,000 employees walked off their jobs ten days ago over benefit cut backs. the wall street journal is reporting verizon issued an ultimatum to their employees. go back to work by the end of the month or risk losing their health insurance. for the first time ever, the san francisco mayor's race is dominated by asian american candidates. political experiments say the city's asian american community is energized by the historic six asian americans in the race. five of them are current office holders. ed lee. lyland yee. david chiu. assessor phil ting. and public defender jeff adachi. >> we have a community that was seen for many, many years as a sleeping dragon of san francisco politics. now suddenly in this last

election cycle become really energized. >> a record turnout of asian- american voters is expected. the cause of a brush fire in kern county is under investigation this morning. the fire started just after 4:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon. firefighters say dry grass and brush was fueling the fire which at one point was threatening homes. crews were able to contain the fire before any structures were damaged. no injuries are reported. if you see smoke in santa teresa park. don't worry it's just a training. they are conducting a live training burn today and form. it will start at # a.m. and end at 5:00 p.m. on both days. 6:17. let's get you out the door. where you knee to go. sal, you can handle that. >> we have a lot of slow

traffic. if you are driving on the golden gate bridge, the fog has been of some concern this morning and that is because it's not only foggy on this span but it's also foggy in southern marin county and you may have to slow dawn a a-- slow down a little bit. that morning fog will get your attention also on some of the other bridges like the san mateo bridge and perhaps some of the western peninsula areas half-moon bay. pacifica, and the like. just use caution. so far no wrecks reported. again we watch antioch and pittsburgh traffic where by the minute at this time in the morning it gets busier. if you are driving on the

nimitz freeway interstate 880 looking pretty nice. at 6:19 let's go to steve. sal, thank you. you touched on the fog also on the bridges and more today than we had yesterday. that is for sure. most locations say cloudy with low clouds and fog. that was not the case 24 hours ago. more of a sea breeze. nothing howling. it's there today. the lows are a little cooler or 50s or low 60s. most locations are calm but traffic picking up a little bit on that breeze that delta breeze and there is an area of low pressure you can see it spinning off the coast. it's also funneling in higher clouds to the south. not a big deal. low clouds sunny. a couple of our forecast models are increasing tropical moisture early next week. the breeze will pick up. inland temps come down two to four degrees. by the coast and bay 50s and

60s. temperatures will continue to stay about the same thursday. cool down on friday and saturday. we bump the temps inland temps especially the coast i don't think is changing much. in business news this morning wells fargo will test a $3 a month fee for customers using debt cards. the bank days the move is in part to a government imposed tax. san francisco based wells fargo does not know if they will charge the fee here in california. sony is cutting the price of the play station three. you can pick it up for $250. it's about a $50 discount. higher end models will cost more. the price cuts could prolock play station three shelf life. 6:20. we want you to watch tv. but if you are a couch potato

good morning, right now traffic is moving along slowly in parts of the contra costa county including bay point and pittsburgh heading out toward the willow pass grade. a nine-year-old philadelphia boy injured by a hit and run -- ryan white was released on monday. a specially equipped medical plane flew him back to pennsylvania. he was hit by a pickup truck after seeing the phillies play the giants. the condition is still serious but the hospital says outlook for his recovery is good. time now 6:24. we are hearing from the brother of the man suspected of killing himself and his two-year-old daughter and the brother says the tragedy was an act of desperation the body of mourad samaan and madeline samaan was found in his car on saturday.

autopsy shows the initial cause of death to be carbon monoxide. >> i don't justify anyone taking the life of a child, but i perceive it more as mourad saved a child from this future with a tyrant. >> the day before samaan abducted the child that he received word that the mother had been awarded full custody. san diego police want to talk to los angeles laker star kobe bryant about an altercation that he reportedly had at a local church. a man attending sunday service says brian injured -- bryant injured him -- bryant was reportedly concerned the man was taking pictures of him and his wife during a service.

witnesses say they never saw a confrontation. >> i didn't see anyone trying to speak with him. even during the sign of the peace i didn't see anyone trying to make contact with him. >> bryant's attorney says the allegations are baseless and he is prepared to fight them. a new study shows watching too much tv may take years off of your life. scientists in australia found that people that watch an average of six hours of tv a day lived about five years less than people who never watch tv. their research showed a person's life span decreased by 22 minutes for every hour of tv watched. the researchers say the problem is not the tv but the lack of activity during long periods of time. have you seen this commercial? some bay area cities are being given national recognition thanks to the new fruit of the loom commercial shot in july it shows the famous fruit guys on horse back spreading the news

street. jade hernandez has all the details. >> reporter: several things are very unusual about the thefts. first of all what thieves are targeting copper and how many times the school you see behind me has been hit. four times. we are live at the allis fong yu school. the school has been hit four times from wednesday through sat of last week. i spoke to to an officer by phone this morning. to make sure thieves don't steal anymore copper police have camped up patrols and put plain clothed officer in the area. unfortunately, it's not the only school facing copper thefts here in san francisco. here at the french school located a few minutes away from alice fong an employee witnessed two men removing copper rain gutters on sunday. they can't link the two thefts together and haven't made any arrests but they say these

cases are unusual. sfpd has a description of the thief in one of the thefts but is not releasing it because the case is still ongoing. (415)575-4444. reporting live in san francisco jade hernandez. san francisco police are warning people to lock their bikes after a series of bicycle thefts. at least five thefts have been reported in the inner sunset area since the first of the month. police say the thief breaks into garages and storageouts to take high-end bicycle units. in one incident a woman confronted a thief and was threatened with a knife. the thefts are making people nervous. >> definitely more aware of leaving our house and making sure all of our doors are locked and keeping an eye out and just having the neighbors watch out for each others stuff. >> now police say that they

will increase patrols in the inner sunset and cole valley neighborhoods. the suspect is describe as an african american man in his 40s and 50s. who has a salt and pepper beard. he may be living in a neighborhood. sonoma city council woman wants tougher rules after a deadly pit bull attack. darla was mulled to death inside her own home last thursday. officers shot and killed the dog. council woman joann sanders tells the press democrat she supports banning pit bulls in her city. time now 6:33. the mother of kidnapping victim michaela garrett praying for a miracle 23 years later. coming up we will take a rare look at the police evidence room. also tell you how the jaycee dugard case has had an impact on the investigation.

san jose mayor says he has a plan to save them millions of dollars. it's not sitting well with some people that live on the east side. tara. >> reporter: we just spoke to the assistant pro here at the golf course he says the parents of the kids that play here have actually started a petition to try to save this golf course. we have more than 400 signatures started already right here. and if you look over my shoulder if you see these greens, these could be replaced by hundreds of condos. that is if mayor chuck reid has his way. the golf course has been operating in the red for more than a decade so reid wants to sell the land here to a housing developer. he has suggested nearly 600 units on the 34-acre property. the city council will hold a public hearing tonight to discuss the issue. the nine-hole course has only made a profit once in the 11 years it has been in business. if it's not sold he says the city would have to shut down libraries and community centers. some neighbors here on the east

side worry that more housing would add traffic and pollution and say the course is one of the few public amenity with rounds costing only $10-15. >> this is one of the hidden gems over here in san jose. it's really a beautiful golf course. it's heartbreaking they want to go with steps in trying to close it and stuff like that. there will be a lot of kids that will miss this golf course if it goes. >> reporter: the mayor says the city has to cut somewhere with san jose facing an $80 million short fall next year. we will let you know what happens at the council meeting coming up on the 10:00 news. a mexican exchange student is under arrest in spain this morning accused of planning a gas attack during the pope's visit. this is video of police in madrid setting up security check points earlier this week. investigators say the student was planning to attack a group of protestors with gases and

other chemicals. time is 6:36. president obama talking about a threat of another terror i tack on american soil. he says a lone wolf attack that is more probable than a major coordinated attack. the u.s. government is still monitoring all possible terror scenarios. they are not letting their guard down. he adds there may be a little extra vigilance as the september 11 attacks gets closer. the responders are not being invited to a tenth anniversary memorial. the memorial is only for the victim's families that is because of space constraints. some of the first responders say they are heartbroken to hear that and feel betrayed by the city. mayor bloomberg says he is trying to find other ways to recognize and honor the first

responders but at a different time. let's look at traffic. what is going on? >> we are seeing traffic becoming a lot heavier in many key areas. for example the bay bridge people are already cueing up to get on to that span. it's about a 5-10 minute delay. at this time of the morning it starts to get slower and slower. also this morning we are looking at interstate 880. one of the main freeways feeding the bay bridge. traffic is busy in both directions. northbound on the right and southbound coming left or coming down the screen if you will heading toward hayward. if you are driving through the south bay the road sensors are picking up activity. it's not major. still have slow traffic on 17. 280 at 17 and 101 near 880. let's go to steve. thank you very much. mr. sun over the big city. we have sunrise. low clouds and fog though have definitely regrouped. it will be cooler pattern inland. some of the fog is thick,

the police need help to fight rising crime. all of this comes after a stray bullet killed a three-year-old boy playing near his home. copper thieves are targeting san francisco schools. so far two schools in the sunset district have been hit. police say they do have a suspect description but haven't released it yet. and this morning the white house announced president obama will announce a major jobs initiative next month. reportedly the president has been meeting with the heads of major u.s. companies to talk about creating new jobs. china is dismissing a report that pakistan gave it access to the american helicopter that crashed in the raid that killed osama bin laden. on sunday the financial times reports that pakistan allowed chinese military engineers to photograph and take samples of the top secret helicopter before giving it back to the u.s.. china defense ministry calls the report unfounded.

a new pentagon report -- the review accuses the army of fail to test the bullet blocking plates properly. the ceramic plates can only supply limited ainsurance that meets limited guidelines. it cost $2.5 billion. the metropolitan transportation commission won't be packing up. kraig debro is in oakland to tell us why. hi. >> reporter: good morning, pam. the big question is after this morning's vote and they might go ahead and start moving. this is actually the second vote on a move top san francisco this morning -- move to san francisco this morning. they are holing the second vote whether they should move to san francisco. the mtc says the 9:00 a.m. revote is being held in front of the public. without talking to anyone this morning and we tried it's hard to see why commissioners want to get a prove to move to this

building. it needs the 500,000 square foot building because it needs more room. so far they are not saying it's illegal for them to move to the building in san francisco. after it satisfies attractors a vote could be the beginning of the end. the city of oakland wrote a letter accusing the mtc of violating the brown act. that is the open public meeting law. after this mornings vote this site may be left open. the building is located 1100 broadway in downtown. presumably the billing which is not now occupied would also have to be renovated in order for the mtc and the bacon service development to operate there. i just talked to an employee with the mtc we are trying to get ahold of a representative to talk about this mornings vote and what it means for the move to san francisco. reporting live federal oakland

a bill to be introduced in sacramento that would change the rules for evaluating parole for serious offenders. right now the parole board can only look at an inmates behavior while in prison. this bill is in response to phillip garrido that was paroled after showing model behavior while in prison. investigators are looking into a fire at a san francisco juvenile detention center. it was reported yesterday evening at a center on woodside avenue. the fire started in the kitchen and extinguished within 15 minutes. no one was injured. students in palo alto have a new way of getting ready for back to school. recycling back to school flop is being held at children's library. . families can trade clothing and backpacks and toys with each other. it starts at 3:30 in the afternoon and ends at 4:30. >> you like that idea.

good morning, to you. well cam -- welcome back. the tobacco companies are suing the federal government over graphic labels on the cigarette packages. they show the corpse of a smoker. tobacco companies claim these labels violate their free speech. they act as an antismoking ad campaign. the food and drug administration has made no comment yet. the labels are currently scheduled to be in place by september of next year. police are on the lookout for a suspicious man that approached two young girls.
