breaking news. the frisch closure in the north bay including the richmond san rafael bridge all because of police activity. good afternoon, i'm tori cam b we begin with this breaking news. the -- campbell. we begin with this breaking news. the richmond san rafael bridge and part of a busy highway have been shut down. police are dealing with a gunman who barricaded himself at the extended stay hotel on francisco boulevard east. the standoff began several hours ago. these are pictures of newschopper2 of the hotel. you can see some of the police cars outside. authorities shut down the bridge as well as interstate 580, from sir francis drake to bellham boulevard. authorities say the gunman is suspected of a stabbing at a

san rafael superparent earlier this earlier -- supermarket earlier this week. they say he's holed up at the hotel. police say he fired a shot up the highway before 580 was closed. there are no reports of any injuries at this time. joining me by phone is sergeant trent cross from the chp. good afternoon, sergeant. >> hi. good afternoon. can you tell us why the decision was made exactly to shut down this stretch of freeway? >> yeah. at some point during this standoff, the suspect did fire multiple shots and we believe that a couple of those shots were fired toward the freeway. so for public safety reasons, we thought it was in the best interest of the public to close down the highway to ensure no one is hurt. >> i'm just curious about the reason to shut down the bridge as well. >> because we don't want any traffic to access the freeway in that area. so in order to keep anyone out

of harm's way because we're not sure what kind of -- what type of weapon the suspect is dealing with and with this -- let's say, for example, if it's a high-powered rifle, those bullets can travel very far. so we want to make sure no one is in harm's way and we keep that perimeter in. >> any word how long that might stay in place? >> right now it's very hard to say. i know the san rafael police department is trying to -- [ inaudible ] >> we don't want to compromise public safety. this is a very, very serious incident we're dealing with, we're dealing with someone who has a gun. he's fired the gun several times. we don't want to get any innocent people involved. we're just asking for people to please be patient.

consider alternate route ors stay out of the -- routes for the next couple of hours, stay out of the hour. >> you mentioned alternate routes. do you have any suggestions? >> you might consider taking 37. that might be a better way to get out into marin county. but you definitely want to avoid the richmond/san rafael bridge, as well as the 101 in that particular area. we're just asking for people too be -- to please be patient. we're dealing with lives here. we want to make sure we're able to minimize anyone being hurt as well as taking the suspect into suspect custody. >> we just saw a live -- it looked like cars are heading east on the bridge. >> so you don't have any word whether any lanes have been reopened? >> i have not received --

curfew. new at noon, tara moriarty tells us why some relatives are not happy with those plans. >> reporter: we're here at 64th and international where police say carlos nava was gunned down in a drive-by shooting one week ago. you see the memorial there of candles and flowers of the 3- year-old who was actually laid to rest yesterday. councilman ignacio de la fuente attended the funeral. this morning, members of the nava family oppose that idea. >> gang injunctions are extremely expensive. millions of dollars. they are choosing to put it there even though it doesn't work and the community members don't want it. >> a curfew and injunction can only go so far. that's not really the root of the problem. the root of the problem is --

you know, drugs, guns, violence are just drowning oakland. >> reporter: the councilman says they need more resources to help combat that. >> the reality is the innocent bystanders are dying more often and we have to do something about it. >> reporter: now, the nava family says it would like to see the family come together again. the coalition of the injudge says it believes that cops do more harassing than policing. they say what -- what the youth really needs are jobs. the city currently restricts the movement of alleged gang members in two neighborhoods. our council members have expressed this in the past. back to you.

>> thank you. and at a -- a teenager expelled from tampa's freedom hool was arrested yesterday after allegedly -- high school was arrested yesterday after allegedly planning to blow up his school. he was arrested after someone -- after someone tipped off police about the plot. police say bomb making materials and a journal containing statements about his intent to kill were found at his home. >> we're learning more details about a series of school thefts in san francisco. we first reported this story on our newscast. jade hernandez has more 0 information -- has more information. >> reporter: we've learned within the last couple of hours that thieves struck this church overnight. you can see where the damage is. thieves ripped the copper pipes right off. just a few feet away, thieves already untrued the fasteners. we can show you right here.

they've left the pipes ready for the taking on the next go- around. pastor dan showed us the damage he was alerted to. his church and catholic school have been vandalized before and recently. thieves targeted the pipes on both sides and now they have to be replaced. >> we have a $2500 deductible for insurance. if you want to make a claim, it's -- $2500 is not going to cover so we have to do the papers ourselves. >> reporter: san francisco police say saint brendan is not the only school affected. four administrators reported four copper thefts. the san francisco police chief says he's already met with pg&e, the public utilities commission and is creating a task force to address the growing problem.

>> it's dangerous, too. a lot of these folks that don't understand as they go for the copper -- some of that copper is charged copper. kilowatt, kilovolt generators. it's a safety thing. it's a miracle nobody has been hurt or killed. >> people are just looking for any way to make money. if you are resorting to that, it's pretty sad. >> reporter: the principal of alice fong in the district said thieves took 12 pipes and now they have is a 24-hour guard on duty. the current regional price for copper is between $2 and $4 a pound and the thieves are taking advantage. a white man, 6 foote, 190 pounds with blond hair, sometimes wearing a yellow reflective vest is one of the tooks -- is one of the

senator lois walk. >> reporter: this is the building the mtc says it tried to make fit. it's located at 1100 broadway in the heart of downtown. the mtc produced a chart that showed that location 50% more expensive than the site in san francisco. oakland city councilmember rebecca kaplin said the reason the building is expensive, that's an unfair comparison. kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. right now two people are in police custody after an alleged robbery and police pursuit. the two suspects were arrested at benedict and daly drives earlier this morning -- earlier this morning, following a police chase. they say when the suspects finally pulled over, they tried to run away but were quickry

found by officers and a -- quickly found by officers and a k-9 unit. one of the suspects was treated for injuries he got from a police dog. what led to this tense situation in new york who crashed into a wall causing him to dangle over the street. it's really nice the community is come together trying to save the -- trying to save the golf course. it's awesome for everybody. >> what san jose may have to do next to dig out of its financial hall.

incredible pictures out of new york city, a salt truck crashed through a wall and dangled from a sanitation building. a preliminary investigation suggests the 56-year-old driver was trying to back out but appears to have gone forward instead. the worker hurt his nick and back and remains hospitalized in -- neck and back and remains hospitalized in stable condition. authorities think it was an accident and don't plan any charges. caltrans wants to remind met motorized. it's upgrading and the closures could begin at 5:00 a.m. and continue through 11:00 a.m.

weekend hours could run longer. crews hope to finish the project in a year and a half. we want to look at 580 and the richmond/san rafael bridge which has been shut down for a couple of hours now because of police activity. as you can see, it looks like the eastbound direction has opened, we have been seeing traffic in the eastbound direction holding from san ralph foal richmond. the police activity involves a suspect in a stabbing at a supermarket last week. opened fire on police when they approached him at the hotel. he's now bare raided -- bare kidded himself at the hotel and that's why police have shut down part of 580 between 101ened at the -- and the -- 101 and the sab ralph fell plaza. if we get more information we will bring it to knew the city of san jose may have to sell

off a golf course to dig out of the financial hall. chuck treed wants to sell the golf course -- reed wants to sell the golf course. a developer wants to build housing there. green tees are only $10 to $15. >> it's one of the hidden gems over here in san jose. it's rea -- it's a beautiful golf course. it's heartbreaking to hear they want to go for the -- there's gonna be a lot of kids that are gonna miss this golf course. the mayor's office says the course ran a $280,000 operating loss last year. it is move-in day for some students at san francisco's state university. about 7,000 fresh american and transfer students are set to arrive on campus today. about 2,000 of them are moving into dorms. over the next couple of days, there are more than 30

well. current numbers updated. fairfield 76 degrees. santa rosa, 72. san francisco only in the upper 50s and 58. hayward reporting 66 degrees. satellite a -- satellite a few high clouds moving in. today a little bit warmer compared to yesterday pretty much the same deal for tomorrow as we head into the weekend. , a cooler weather sweeps in from the north. as far as our forecast model, some of the fog is still doing a better job and already surging back in the bay. here we are at 8:00 this morning and here is the expected pattern at 7:00, 8:00. covering a good portion of the bay. temperatures for today, you have options with those reading only in the upper 50s for the beaches but the warmest locations on track to reach the upper 80s out towards antioch and brentwood. san jose in the lower 80s. gilroy at 87.

stock -- stocks are mixed right now. the dow is dragging down, especially. nasdaq. weak results. it's down 9%. the dow is flat. nasdaq down 14. s&p is up 1. four of the largest tobacco companies are suing the federal government over graphic new warning labels on cigarette packs. the images include darkened lungs and a corpse of a smoker. the tobacco companies claim they violate their free speech right. the fda has not commented on the lawsuit. the labels are currently scheduled to be in place by september of next year. more live pictures now as we want to update you on a

developing story at the top of ktvu channel 2 news at noon, police say a gunman continues to be holed up at the extended hotel -- stay hotel in san rafael. that's shut down 580 in san rafael. right now we're looking at some traffic heading in the eastbound direction heading across the richmond san rafael bridge but authoritying have still shut down the westbound direction from the richmond toll plaza to 101, the westbound direction of 580 is still closed. this is after the alleged gunman fired at the highway. the eastbound direction at 580 reopened minutes ago. the westbound direction is still shut -- is still shut down. we'll have more coming up at -- we'll have more coming up as well. that will do it for us. thanks for watching. have a good day.
