degrees, fog for the coast and for the bay and still a few patches at 12:00. and then by 4:00 this afternoon warming up inland. there's the eventual temperature range with most areas -- a big range from 60 all the way to the lower 90s out toward antioch and brentwood. here is a look ahead, your extended forecast with your weekend always in view and there's that dip in temperatures, a little bit of a bump in the numbers for sunday, more warming for monday and into tuesday of next week. sal is standing by and he has an update on traffic. good morning, sal. >> reporter: good morning to you, mark. right now traffic is doing pretty well around the bay area, but we do have some road closures as you can see. there's still some lights out there from the road closures coming up on highway 4 in bake point and just a lot of the road work in san ramoone and in the diablo valley this morning, you can see highway 880 was closed, so just take it easy as you drive through these areas. give workers a little bit of a break. this is northbound 880 coming

up past the coliseum. you'll see traffic moving along very nicely. also this morning san mateo bridge traffic looks good, heading out to the high rise with no major issues. one of the things we've been wondering about, highway 101 has been closed for an extended period of time, but it has just reopened in marin county. jade hernandez is there to tell us why it was closed in the first place. jade. >> reporter: we're live at the command post this morning and westbound 580 did reopen a little more than three hours ago, but a man is still barricaded inside of his hotel you see right behind me. that's the extended stay hotel in san rafael. san rafael authorities are treating this as a hostage situation. early this morning police placed a metal plate in front of the hotel window where the man is holed up in order to protect freeway traffic this morning. the barricade acts as protection in case any shots are fired from inside. now, earlier this evening a -- earlier yesterday evening, a s.w.a.t team member broke a

ground-floor level window at the hotel. police say this man is believed to be on the second floor and may be responsible for stabbing a grocery store worker on sunday in san rafael. officers have been talking with the man who is also believed to have his girlfriend with him since yesterday morning. now, i want you to take a look, this westbound 580, since it was closed yesterday, there was traffic that was backed up and, of course, now that it's reopened, that's good news for commuters. but we want to show you this morning back at the extended stay hotel, this is the hotel where the man is believed to still be inside at this point this morning. we are live at the command post and as soon as we get some more information from officers out here, we will pass that along to you at the top of the hour. reporting live jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> jade, thank you. we will continue to monitor this situation throughout all of our newscasts this morning. you can also get more information and see video from

the scene online at ktvu.com. right now the coast guard is searching for a missing canoeist off the coast of san francisco. want to give you now a live look from yoba buena island. this is where the coast guard is launching its boats for the search as it resumes its search this morning. the man was with two other people when the canoe overturned near treasure island just after 6:00 last night. the coast guard says the two others managed to swim to shore, but they could not find the third person or the canoe. right now the coast guard does have three vessels searching the bay and at first daylight a helicopter will be called in. authorities in freemont are looking for the suspects who set fire to a junior high school. the fire was started in the locker room area of walters junior high at about 7:00 last night. it caused about $100,000 worth of damage. no students or teachers, though, were on campus at the time. there is no description of the

arsonist. alameda county sheriff's deputies detained two men overnight after authorities say they saw them throwing things off the roof of a building in oakland. the two men were on top of a building on international boulevard and 14th avenue around 10:00 p.m. last night. that's when alameda county sheriff's deputies from laney college saw them throwing building materials off the roof. the two men were detained and oakland police and fire were called in to investigate where the materials had come from. the investigation is ongoing. the second suspect in the shooting death of a little boy in oakland is due in a las vegas courtroom in just a few hours from now. 22-year-old willie torence is accused of driving the car in last week's droogt. police say rival gang members were the intended target, but a stray bullet hit 3-year-old carlos nava. lawrence denard was arrested in pittsburgh a day after that shooting. the little boy's killing has prompted calls by at least two oakland councilmembers to

expand gang injunctions and also impose a youth curfew. but some, including the nava family criticize those proposals. opponents say the focus should be on more social programs and community organizing. >> they're telling us what they want, they're telling us what they're going to do instead of really reaching out to the community and really seeing what the community really expects and needs from them. >> councilman dela fu urete and reid plans to talk about it after the summer recess. prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty of a san quentin inmate accused of killing another prisoner. lawyers for 30-year-old frank souza were notified of the plan this week. he's accused of stabbing fellow inmate edward schaefer to death at san quentin last july. schaefer was serving time for a 2009 dui crash that killed a 9-year-old girl and injured her father. souza is already serving 60 years to life for the murder of a homeless man in san jose.

a gallic football player injured during a game in san francisco is set to be release from a rehabilitation center today. ktvu news learned that 21-year-old mark mcí governor can now walk and -- mcí govern can walk and talk and kick a ball around. mcí govern will continue to receive outpatient therapy. his family temporarily moved from ireland to the better to recover from the injury. another player reportedly knocked him down during a game in june. patrick power, a person of interest in the case was suspended from the sport for 96 weeks. there has been a second cyber attack against bart, this one leaked the personal information of bart police officers. someone hacked into the bart police union's website yesterday morning and they posted personal information of more than 100 officers, including home addresses. bart's police union president says officers are now being told to be on alert. >> we're telling officers if you're going to work, let your

local jurisdictions know what happened, what occurred and ask for some extra patrols around the neighborhood and look for suspicious activity. >> now, this hack attack and one over the weekend of bart's marketing website come after the transit agency cut off cell phone service inside its downtown stations last week to thawart a planned protest. the hacker group anonymous blasted bart's decision to do that. it took credit for the weekend attack, but denies responsibility for leaking the police officers' information. we want to now get another check on the weather situation out there. hi, sal. >> good morning, heather. things are doing pretty well out there. if you are driving anywhere near the east shore freeway, should be a good drive for you heading out to the mcí arthur maze and no major issues heading out to the bay bridge toll plaza where it's going to be light so far coming into san francisco. we're off to a nice start. the road work on the lower deck has been picked up, likewise for that road work on the upper deck of the bay bridge.

and this morning if you're driving in san jose, clear roads here, 280 northbound looks good getting up to highway 17. 438 -- 4:38. here's mark. >> sal, good morning to you. once again seems like the forecast pattern really not changing too much over the past few weeks, the low clouds and fog are pushing back into the bay and right near the immediate shoreline where you could encounter some drizzle, at least in the short term over the next two to three hours, so possibly some wet roadways driving highway 1 over the next few hours. current numbers, santa rosa reporting dense fog, 52 degrees, oakland 57, san jose the lower 60ed and livermore in the upper 50s, reporting mostly clear skies. for today high pressure tries to rebuild a little bit and as a result temperatures inland, we'll call it on the warm to hot side, nothing too extreme, mainly the upper 80s to the lower 90s. here's our next change, though, as we take this into friday and also saturday, this cooler weather system moves in from the north. that will deepen the marine layer, stretch it out. so with that a cooling trend, more clouds this weekend.

some locations making it up into the low 80s for both saturday into sunday. here's our forecast for the coast, fog and drizzle this morning, skies becoming partly sunny into the afternoon hours, right around the bay some patchy dense fog this morning, mostly sunny this afternoon, here's a look at the numbers in your neighborhood this afternoon, these forecast highs really not a big change from yesterday, warmest locations checking in 90, 91 degrees, san jose 81 and san mateo right around 74. here is a look ahead, your extended forecast with your weekend always in view and there's a little bit of a dip in the numbers for friday and saturday. we're going to gradually warm things up into next week. another forecast check just minutes away. >> thank you, mark. the u.s. justice department is now investigating whether the standard and poors credit rating agency improperly rated mortgage securities before the financial crisis. that's according to a "new york times" report. the paper says the investigation started before s & p downgraded

the u.s. credit rating. the report, though, says the justice department is asking about cases when analysts wanted to award lower ratings on mortgage bonds, but were then overruled by other s & p business managers. car dealers say the recent downturn in the stock market could lead to a big downturn in seams this -- sales this year. they had believed sales of $13 million this year. now they say that could be overly optimistic. august is usually a strong sales month as car dealers clear their lots for newer models. netflix is preparing to expand service to spain and britain in the first half of next year according to the "los angeles times." the las galos-based company is looking to move into europe and asia before 2012. netflix announced plans to move into canada and 43 latin american country the before the end of this year. a new security program

good thursday morning. time now 4:44. livermore throughout the day plenty of sunshine, temperatures warming up with a forecast high 89 degrees. new this morning, oil giant bp says a new sheen has surfaced in the gulf of mexico. bp has not indicated whether the sheen was a result of a new oil spill. the company is only saying that it was found near two abandoned exploration sites and that it's sending a remote-operated vehicle under water to examine the problem. the new discovery comes after the 2010 explosion of a bp well which killed 11 men and led to the worst offshore oil spill in u.s. history. the u.s. military has sent two more armed predator drones to libya. that's in response to requests from nato commanders. the pentagon says the armed drones are used for surveillance, but they can also strike targets when needed. nato says in recent days the rebels have made significant gains in their battle against

libyan government forces. a white house call for serious president to step down could happen today. the obama administration is reportedly expected to make a statement later on and that would also include new sanctions on president alastkpwhropb's re jet stream. he accused syrian troops of killing more than 1800 civilians since the uprisings began there in march. today president obama head out on a 10-day family vacation at martha's vineyard in massachusetts. that's after wrapping up his three-day trip through the midwest where he urged people to put pressure on congress to work together for the good of the country. >> i need you to send a message to your members of congress, to your representatives that we're tired of the games, we're tired of the posturing, we don't want more press releases, we want action. >> the president ended his midwest bus trip in illinois. during that tour he made several unscheduled stops such as this one at a county fair in illinois

where he took time out to talk with people and pose for some photographs. the top republican presidential candidates, in the meantime, continue to campaign -- continue on the campaign trail today. texas governor rick perry has several events scheduled in new hampshire. congresswoman michele bachmann is in south carolina today and mitt romney is headed west to wyoming for a fundraiser and a meet and greet event. the tsa is testing a new program that uses friendly conversation to help detect suspicious behavior. for the next two months passengers at boston's logan international airport will need to pass a new security checkpoint. under the new behavior detection program, passengers will have to provide not only their boarding pass and i.d., they'll also have to answer a few questions for tsa officials. after 60 days the tsa will decide whether to expand this program to other airports. san francisco police say crime in that city is at a historic low. the chief and mayor ed lee announced yesterday that violent

crime dropped 6% during the first half of this year. the police chief and the mayor attribute that drop to an increased cooperation between police, city dments and the community -- city departments and the community. a free camping trip to help steer people away from gung life will be offered in san francisco. mayor lee says he's planning a weeklong trip to camp maither for about 50 young people. an exact date hasn't been announced, but the trip is expected to be offered in the next few weeks. lee says the camp will be the opposite of those scared straight-style programs. this trip will be focused instead on team building and fun outdoor activities. an autopsy reveals that the kidnapped 2-year-old girl, the girl that was kidnapped by her father in the sacramento area suffered gunshot wounds. authorities say madeline fay had two gunshot wounds but her cause of death is pending because of toxicology reports. the girl's father, moread samon died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. they're bodies were found saturday in samont's suv.

they were the subject of a statewide amber alert after he abducted his daughter during a custody dispute. another report suggested the two died from carbon monoxide poisoning. a florida teenager has been arrested after threatening to blow up his farmer school and claim more victims than columbine. 17-year-old jared cano was arrested last night in tampa. police say they were tipped off about his alleged plot to set off bombs on the first day of class at freedom high school. >> they indeed found a manifesto written by jared that outlined minute by minute what his actions were going to be on the first day of school to include detonating explosive devices through the school. >> police say they also found materials to make pipe bombs at his home and believe he was acting alone. cano was expelled last year from the school for an outside incident. school officials say classes will start on tuesday as scheduled. casey anthony's lawyers have filed an appeal to try to keep her from having to return

to florida to serve a yearlong probation sentence. a judge recently ordered anthony to return to orlando by the end of next week. she was supposed to report to a probation officer in a case in which she pleaded guilty to stealing checks from a friend. that case is not related to anthony's recent murder trial. you may remember she was acquitted last month in the death of her 2-year-old daughter, caylee. murder suspect joran van der sloot could be leaving a peruvian jail soon. van der sloot was arrested last may in connection of the death of a woman in a hotel room. peruvian prosecutors say if a trial doesn't begin by december, van der sloot could be let go. the statutory period of custody is 18 months. van der sloot is also linked to the disappearance of natalee holloway who vanished during a trip to aruba back in 2005. there is new information out about that wildfire burning near lake tahoe. the two people police now have in custody in connection with this blaze. and it attracts surfers

two teenagers are under arrest in connection with a nevada wildfire that continues to burn out of control at this hour. the ray may fire has already burned 2800 acres east of lake tahoe. authorities say it was started by an illegal wildfire set by two 15-year-old boys. two firefighters suffered nonlife threatening injuries while fighting the flames there. right now there is still no

estimate of when they will have that fire under control. the metropolitan transportation commission will not be moving its headquarters to san francisco after all. board members reversed their decision yesterday after hearing complaints about the possible relocation. last month the mtc voted to move to a larger building in downtown san francisco, but yesterday the commission decided to study other options and then take a second vote. caltrans is using something new to smooth out the new paving on a busy couldn'tra costa freeway. it's an ongoing project on 13 miles of interstate 680 between alcosta boulevard and redger road. >> they have like 25 years old and according to this one go up 245 to 50.

>> that stretch of freeway opened 47 years ago and was expected to last 20 years before needing any repairs. because of many shortages, it's only had new patches put on it. now caltrans says the old concrete slabs are finally being replaced with pads that should last much, much longer. caltrans says the work will continue through early next year, but most of the work is being done at night, so it won't affect the majority of the 180,000 commuters who use that stretch of freeway everyday. speaking of freeways, let's get a check now on our traffic with sal. >> i like that transition, heather, thank you very much. let's take a look at what we have now, traffic is moving

along very nicely. if you are driving in most areas. i want to mention that westbound bay bridge looks pretty good. there is no road work coming across, so you'll have all five lanes moving well into san francisco. also this morning we're looking at interstate 880 right near the oakland airport if you happen to be driving there or trying to catch a flight perhaps at oakland international, should be a nice drive for you. interstate 580 near san quentin is open again. we had a stretch of the freeway closed almost all day yesterday for police activity. the activity goes on, we have a reporter on the scene, but the freeway has been reopened. let's go to mark. >> hi, sal. once again we're tracking some fog out there, coastside right around the bae, santa rosa some reports of dense visibilities here. 52 degrees, san jose at last check reporting 61. so here's a look at our thursday, clearing skies near the coast, tomorrow is the fog, we'll cool things off a bit and the weekend definitely temperatures cooling off as we head into saturday with a little bit of a bump in the numbers as we do head into sunday. for today high pressure is trying to rebuild and as a result warmest locations will be flirting with the 90-degree mark and then we'll take this into your friday and saturday. this will be the source of the cooling trend, this area of low pressure moves in from the north and with that more fog and temperatures this weekend, the warmest locations only approaching the lower 80s.

here's our updated forecast model showing you some of the fog out there and then we'll put this into motion pulling to back near the shoreline into the afternoon hours. plenty of sunshine inland and as a result we have some warm numbers to show you in the forecast maps. fairfield 89 degrees, santa rosa right around 84. oakland tops out in lower 70s. livermore upper 80s, right around 89. san jose checks in in the 80s. these temperatures will check in about 3:00 or 4:00 this afternoon. really not a big departure from yesterday's highs. here's a look ahead with your weekend always in view. there's that cooldown we've been talking about for friday into saturday. a little bit of a bump in the numbers for sunday and then we'll gradually warm things up for monday into tuesday. heather. >> thank you, mark. time now 4:56 on this thursday morning. the big wave surf season kicks off in november, but there is still no decision on just who will run this year's maverick surf competition. the san mateo harbor commission planned to issue a permit last my, but commissioners say they didn't receive any applications. can couple says they will work together on a single bid but need more time to try to put it together. a startling announcement from oil giant bp, the reason they think there may be more oil in the gulf of mexico.
