taxpayers. reporting live in san rafael, ktvu channel 2 news. california's attorney general announced the arrest of two attorneys believed to be involved in a mortgage scam that preyed on homeowners drowning in debt. we have more on the red flag that every homeowner should watch out for, paul? >> reporter: the state attorney says the jailed attorneys contacted roughly two million potential clients across the country and defrauded 2500 out of millions in a scam that was supposed to provide troubled relief for their mortgagees. >> are they going to -- mortgages. >> are they going to keep receiving calls? >> reporter: this man and 17 other people are accused of cold calling homeowners asking them to join a lawsuit against mortgage lender who's kramer other ands say approved inappropriate loans. they promised them to get them out of forechosure by having an attorney represent them and

it turns out that is what he is getting. a judge today set an october 17th trial date for 44-year-old william lynch. he is facing felony assault and elder abuse charges. he pled not guilty. he is accused of attacking gerald linard last year as the jesuit center. he says he sexually abused him and his brother when they were kids during camping trips. >> from the beginning williams talked about wanting his day in court and wants to talk about the incident and what happened and he always said from the beginning he would not plead anythingy he wanted his day in court. >> if found guilty he faces four years in prison. we checked with the coast guard a short time ago. there is still no sign of a man missing in san francisco bay. 52-year-old butler disappeared last night when a canoe over hub turned on the northeast side of treasure island. two friends with him made it out of the water. they say butler stayed near the canoe to try to retrieve keys.

the coast guard and others used boats and helicopter to search the bay area cities. several developments in a missing woman in aruba are putting new suspicion on her traveling companion. the press says just two days after reporting gardener missing he tried to collect on a 1 1/2 million accidental death insurance policy that he took out on her. he says that gardener disappeared while the two were small -- two were snorkeling. janet napolatono unveiled a new policy. she says a change would allow federal agents to focus on deporting convicted criminals and those with a national security or public safety threat. under this new policy the federal government will make a case by case review of about 300,000il almost immigrants who face possible deportation.

. a group of laid off firefighters is back on the job today and it could not come at a better time. let's go now to ktvu live in san jose. you will tell us how the worst of the fire season is actually right around the corner. >> reporter: that is right. so far it has been mild. but this is all part of a fire training exercise. it took place here at santa theresa county park. you can see the vegetation here is dry t. is so ease tow break up this stuff. and this -- that is why this fire burn here at the county park was just great practice for some of the firefighters that never fought a wild lined

fire before. the fire slowly grows eating away at acres of dry land. fire instructors keep feeding it. >> we are lighting fire on purpose so that the recruits can practice putting it out. >> reporter: 22 fire recruits marched out to attack it. it has been awhile since they suited up. they were part of a group of 49 fires were were laid off last year. they funded bringing half of them back and they need a refresher course. >> some of them went back to school and some have not had training for this year. >> reporter: it is the first time learning to fight a wildland fire. it is a skill. 25% of the fires they respond to during may and october are brush and wildland fires. twopbs is raging each recruit gets a chance to putting it out. fellow recruits trail behind practicing an important skill. they are using tools to rake in the embers towards the burn ground. this prevents the fire from

. mark mcgovern was released today from the hospital. when he was discharged before noon. he was injured and went into a coma after another player reportedly knocked him down at a game in june. he can now walk and talk. he can even kick a ball. he will be going to outpatient treatments here in the bay area until he is well enough to return to his home in ireland. >> mark joins us now and giant fist in action as we speak. >> yes. it is looking all right so far. they try to get their act back together and earn a split with the braves. a place they have a historically have a problem
