a sentence handed down. reaction to news that the two uc berkeley hikers are sentenced to eight years in an iranian prison. the battle is almost underway. the 49ers face off against the oakland raiders. and as the country's economic woes take its toll on

the youngest residents. good evening. heather holmes is off tonight. >> and i'm ken wayne. >> we are on early to bring you the 49ers versus the raiders preseason game. we follow news in oakland where a two-year-old child has been struck by a bullet. police say it happened at mcarthur avenue. the child's mother took the toddler to the hospital. the two-year-old may have been sitting in a car at the time of the shooting. we have a team on the way to the scene and on the way to the hospital. we'll bring you later on in the newscast. there was a stinging setback in the effort to free two uc berkeley students in iran. we have more on the sentenced imposed on the hikers that

could keep them behind bars >> reporter: they are often referred to as the uc berkeley graduates who were hiking and were seized. one of the three hikers has been released but the remaining two received a sentence that has caught many by surprise, many who thought it was harsher than expected. this is shane bowers and josh fattal in front of the judge. this is very harsh. this is eight years. it's very harsh. >> reporter: we spoke with journalist omid mamarian by phone today from new york. he helped the hikers obtain their attorney in iran whom he spoke with last night about the surprised sentence. >> iranian tv, they announced it. >> reporter: bowers, fattal and sarah shore contend they were hiking in iraq and were tank by

iranian forces. shore was released on bond for medical reason. she did not return. she spoke out during the two men's trial. >> i would ask iranian authority to show the same compassion they showed me. >> reporter: this was a trial that was influenced byiranian intelligence. >> he is an intill generals. he is famous for what the iranian intelligence ask him to do. >> reporter: the attorney for the hikers has 20 days to appeal the sentence and contact the bay area group that support the two. they often remain quiet when the case or the wait of the hikers remain uncertain and that is certainly the case with this appeal pending. in berkeley, ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news this latest twist comes after more that two years of

if you can't see the forecast in the short term. mostly cloudy skies right now. cloud will gradually thicken up. temperatures, you want to bundle up with the readings in the 50s. today, cooler than yesterday across the region. santa rosa right now, 69. fairfield currently in the mid- 70s. live more checking in at 74 degrees. here we go with the fog hugging the coast line. it will increase, pushing into the bay. we could be talking about some spotty drizzle. overnight lows tomorrow morning, we'll show you some 50s, low 50s for santa rosa, napa. oakland in the mid-50s. not much change in the temperature department tomorrow but there is a warming trend. i'll have that in a few minutes today, b.a.r.t. said it did not violate free speech rights by cutting phone service at several stations. in a statement, b.a.r.t. said it feared a repeat of a july protest that shut down the sipping center station.

b.a.r.t. said that protesters planned to use text messages to coordinate another demonstration on august 11th. so b.a.r.t. cut underground cell service. b.a.r.t. officials apologized for inconveniencing passengers and said that, quote, b.a.r.t.'s temporary interrupg of service did not affect any first amendment rights of any person to protest. police tell ktvu that a little boy was crossing silver avenue ahead of a family member near elmyra street when he was struck around 11:30. the boy's injuries are not life threatening. officers are now looking for a dark green 1980s hatch back with a missing passenger side mirror. witnesses said that the driver appeared to be a latino man. police in relationship pond are investigating a fatal hit- and-run accident that happened early this morning. the man was hit by a white pickup at the intersection of 13th street and colinga avenue

around 1:00 a.m. he died at the scene. a couple of blocks later a white pickup was set on fire. police are working to confirm if it is the vehicle involved in that hit-and-run. the victim's identity has not been released until his family has been notified. activists are worried about violence by police. 22-year-old petriceli was shot by police when he suffered a mental break down. the wrongful death settlement led to a retired 40-hour mental health course for police it's been 85 days since relatives last saw student michele we. but relatives have not lost hope. they hiked through the steep terrain looking for the woman. >> reporter: with their hiking

boots on, volunteers trekked. sandwiched between remote hill and a steep ravine. >> this is the third volunteer party that michele le's family organized since she went missing much. i saw something blue and it looks like surgical glove. >> reporter: it turned out to be a blue label on a water bottle. volunteers know their role is to help with the process of elimination. >> it eliminates areas where people have not looked. so that's better than not looking at all. >> this is rosa alobs yo's second time as a search volunteer. >> i am a mother and i just can't imagine how i would feel by having one of my kids missing. >> reporter: as volunteers continue to search, the le family says that police have told them that there has been new development in the case. hayward police didn't return

gains but ended the week down. the nasdaq loss dropped 38 points. the stock market's fourth straight week of losses san francisco food banks are struggling to help those in need now that federal funding has been cut. nationwide, congress cut food bank funding by 40 pmplets individual counties no longer get money as the poft and unmany employment rates are below the poverty level. that means that the high cost of living here, the county will not qualify for federal fund. that's meant hundreds of thousands of dollars lost. caltrain may soon be dropping its nine-year partnership with amtrak after proposing controls. caltrain track recommended signing a five-year $62 million contract with missouri-based transit america services. caltrain officials say they hope the proposed contract will save money in the long run. the board of directors will vote on the proposal september

we have an update on breaking news in oakland where a two-year-old child has parentally been shot. police say it happened at 60th avenue and mcarthur boulevard around 3:15 this afternoon. this is fresh video from highland hospital. the child's mother took the wounded toddler to the hospital for treatment. outside the hospital, officers talked with a woman who may have been with the youngster's family. the news crews is working to find out more about where the toddler was shot and the condition of the child. we'll have all of that tonight on the 10:00 news. four people are now confirmed dead in a flash flooding that caught commuters by surprise in pittsburgh, pennsylvania. a mother and two young daughters died when they were trapped under their vehicle under nine feet of water. an elderly woman was killed when she was swept away by the flood waters. others managed to escape just in time. >> water started coming in my doors and that's when i knew i was in trouble. and, you know, 911 said, we'll

disappointing news this week for first responders who helped rescue people in the 9/11. the new york mayor announced that there is no space for them. >> reporter: it is hallowed ground. next month, thousands of people will descend on ground zero for the ten-year anniversary. >> i'm bringing my wife with me. my family wept through it as well. >> reporter: first responders want to attend the anniversary but mayor bloomberg says that space is limited so not everyone invited. this week, he ruled out first responders including in new york city: i think they are missing an opportunity to allow

tracking. thinks barely a tropical storm pack winds of 40 miles per hour. at least a few high clouds moving into our forecast area. with the instability associated with, this we will have to keep an eye on the possibility of a few isolated thunderstorms. not in the forecast, just yet but something that we will be watching in the five-day forecast. you will see tomorrow morning, though, you can count on the low clouds and fog and drizzle showing up on the cold side. partly cloudy skies right around the bay. here is a look at the numbers forecast highs. santa rosa, 74. fair field, around 80. antioch at 82. san francisco, 23 degrees. these temperatures about the same today, could be a little warmer. extended forecast, you will see temperatures' warm els locations in the low 890s. and then we do warm things back up by monday. by tuesday, the warmest

and a good evening to you. i'm mark ibanez. welcome to this special edition of sports wrap as it is battle of the bay day. raiders over in candlestick park visit the san francisco 49ers. get this. this is the 38th time, counting regular season and preseason that the two teams have met and they are squared up. each has won 19 apiece. so this is a little bit of a rubber match as well. we have joe fondy standing by at the stick to talk about what's going on and we also have fred inglis covering this side of the football. as far as the quarterbacking situation, they have a little head start on the 49ers and they are feeling pretty good about things. i know you spend a lot of time

all right. we welcome back you to part 2 of sports wrap. you heard about the raiders end of the deal from fred inglis. the 49ers, after the beating their quarterback took against the saints, they went out and signed a veteran. eight years in the nfl but last played for the u.s. football league. he last threw a pass in 2008. as a matter of fact, when the 49ers gave him a call, he was coaching high school football as an assistant in north carolina. he is a bit rusty but he will see at least a little bit of playing time. he has been working out with the 49ers this past week. now we go to joe fonzi who would like to get things squared away on the offensive side of the ball. part of that is to tighten up

the offensive line. >> reporter: you are right about that. the 49ers certainly have some specific areas tonight where they want to see improvement. one thing san francisco does know about its performance in last week's game against the ain't, the offensive line play has to improve. alex smith was sacked twice and hurried throughout his brief time in the game. collin cap kapernick was sacked more during his extended play. >> it's a learning process. last week, we were ten days in the playbook, new offense, new system. everybody is still getting the communication and calls down. >> it's the preseason. it's good we have i on tape. now we can look at it and we are expecting to get better.

>> the entire 49er team is learning a new offense. on top of that, adam snyder is learning a new position, center. sometimes described as the quarterback of the offensive line. irchlt' our job at center to call our protection. from there, it was just break downs of technique and, you know, sometimes, it's not the offensive line's fault either. it always falls back on us. that's fine that's how it goes. >> reporter: fans are streaming in behind me. it is preseason and it is the raiders. see you later on after the game on the point after. reporting live, i'm joe fonzi. mark, back to you. >> thanks a lot. those two guys will be manning the locker rooms after the game. i'll be on the set here with bubba parris, former 49er great for all the post game activities. the giants are trailing the houston astros 3-0 in the 3rd inning. so the beat goes on for the san francisco giants. no scoring and no winning the last few nights.
