[ laughs ] tonight bay area football fans are being asked to come forward as police investigate violence during, and after last night's battle of the bay. good evening everyone i'm heather holmes. >> and i'm ken wayne. if you were at last night's game san francisco police want to talk to you. investigators are still looking

for witnesses trying to find suspects after a wild night of violence. ktvu's debra villalon is at the hospital where some of the victims were taken. >> reporter: we've been talking to investigators coming in and out of here today. this is where two men are being investigated. battle of the bay became battle in the stands during the niners- raiders game. fans say it was one melee of many. >> there was a lot of fights. i saw about 20 fights around me. it was pretty scary. we actually left a little earlier because we didn't get caught up in the parking lot. >> reporter: one scuffle roughed up an off duty santa clara sheriff's deputy a treated for minor injuries.

a san rafael man was found beaten unconscious in this men's room close to the end of the game. >> we reached out to the public. >> reporter: police are also looking for a link between two gunshot victims found in the stadium perimeter. a 24-year-old shot several times in the stomach. investigators have interviewed a younger man in the hospital. but not the other man who is critically injured. surveillance cameras caught women fighting. >> come, this is an unusual event. we don't often have people shot at sporting events. this is unusual and continue to come. >> reporter: the gunshot victims recovering here are stable.

the assault victim is in more serious condition. it's still not clear if team rivalries or something different triggered this violence. in san francisco, debra villalon, ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco mayor ed lee and oakland mayor jean quan issued a statement today. the statement read in part, fans come to our stadium to enjoy a day of football. these games are family events and the types of images we witnessed last night have no place in our arenas. the two bay area football teams are also denouncing the violence. they said, these kind of events are disquiting to everyone in the bay area community. and the raiders said in a statement quote the incidents at last night's game are not acceptable to the raiders or to any national football league

team and our thoughts are with all affected. bryan stow's improvement is bringing tears to his family's eyes. the family posted on their website that stow was able to mouth words that made them cry. the family says the words are special and say that now is not the time to share them. he is now recovering at san francisco general hospital where his progress is described as quote, slowly but surely. motorcycles roared through oakland today in an effort to bring peace. many hope that the shooting death of a 3-year-old little boy finally brings change there. >> you can tell by the items left here that carlos navas' death has touched the

community. for 23 blocks, for less than an hour. traffic on international boulevard slowed to a crawl. as an estimated 100 members of various bay area motorcycle clubs leveraged their street credibility. >> stop the violence in the city of oakland. we're fed up with it. we don't want to deal with it anymore. >> reporter: members of the clubs, see parts of their former selves reflected in today's events. >> we have validity from our past and how we've changed. >> reporter: today's rally started at 88th and international where two people were gunned down memorial day weekend. it ended at 55th and international where a 53-year- old was shot to death two weeks ago. >> there's just been a lot going on. we decided that it had to be now. >> reporter: the march down the middle of international boulevard led drivers to lay on

their horn. not out of frustration, but out of support. >> i think it's fantastic that people come together to put down violence. i think it's awesome. >> reporter: the memory of carlos nava is bringing the community together again next weekend who's proceeds of the event will go to the nava family. oakland police are still trying to figure out the circumstances surrounding the shooting of a 2-year-old boy killed yesterday. the mother says her son was hit by a stray gunshot in the chest. officers responded to this section of mcarthur boulevard and other areas yesterday afternoon. but couldn't find any evidence of a shooting. the boy is recovering tonight at oakland children's hospital. there is celebratory gunfire in the streets of tripoli at this hour as rebels there say they have taken control of the capital of libya

and freed the country. >> this is a scene in tripoli's main square. people are ripping down the green flags that represent the regime of colonel gadhafi. today president obama says the celebration has reached a tipping point and calls for mr. gadhafi to release power. and while there is an upbeat mood in parts of tripoli, as dominique diva tally reports, the question of who is in control remains unclear. >> reporter: after more than six months of fierce fighting, libyan rebels finally entering the country's capital tripoli. the rebels say there was little

resistance as gadhafi's troops appear to melt away. this all comes hours after the rebels took over a major military base outside of tripoli. but the libyan government says it won't give up. >> we will fight because we have the right to. and we have gadhafi, he led us in this confrontation for dignity and our freedom from nato's agendas. >> reporter: and gadhafi released audio message urging people to support him. >> everybody should go out. i am with you at tripoli. we should go to the end of the earth. >> reporter: but according to some reports, gadhafi is in algeria now. >> nobody thinks that the people who call themselves the transitional council are likely to stick around very long.

>> reporter: and in benghazi, thousands of people have flooded the streets celebrating with fireworks and waving flags. and here in neighboring tenezia, refugees are celebrating with car horns. >> reporter: should h orns. >> should colonel gadhafi's rule fall, so will the price of oil prices. if the situation in libya stabilizes, oil production is expected to ramp up and lead to a drop in oil prices this fall. the lawyer for the two uc berkeley graduates inprisoned in iran says he plans to appeal

their sentences. a court sentenced the three to eight years in prison. the two men's families are disappointed with the verdict saying quote, sean and josh are innocent and have never posed any threat to the islamic republic of iran, it's government or its people. senator feinstein is expected to join lee tomorrow to talk to voters. feinstein who was san francisco's mayor from 1978 to 1988 has praised lee for his quote steady leadership and unified presence in city hall. an update now to a story we first brought you last night on

the 10:00 news. investigators believe fireworks are to blame for yesterday's hard to reach grass fire in marin county. the fire started in the hills of fairfax and took several air crews to contain. they found used fireworks near the point of origin. authorities are still looking for those responsible. documents show that pg & e was aware of weld risks on pipeline 132 since at least 2008. a section of that pipeline exploded in a san bruno neighborhood last year killing eight people. the san francisco chronicle reports that a december 2008memo turned over to federal investigators note suspected manufacturing threats related to welds on the pipeline. pg & e sometimes ran gas on that line at the highest allowed level. a former napa state

hospital patient will stand trial for attempted murder. a judge friday ruled that there was was probable cause to believe this man victor mandujano attacked his roommate. the victim is still recovering. mandujano is due back in court september 6th. police in the east bay have found two more large marijuana grow sites in the hills south of moraga near the scene where a suspect opened fire on an officer last month. district police have been searching the hills after someone with an assault rifle shot at the officer. he was not injured. police announced a total of 1,000 marijuana plants were found in the east bay m.u.d. watershed. another cultivation was found a day after the shooting. no suspects have been

identified. the rules which go into effect on tuesday include money for passengers who are bumped from an oversold flight. they also allow the transportation department to allow fines on airline if they allow an international flight to be delayed for four hours from taking off. b.a.r.t. riders consider yourself warned. the action planned for tomorrow that could throw a wrench into the evening commute. a strike by thousands of verizon workers ends so why are they planning to return to work without a deal? they are some of the smallest dogs around but they are causing a big problem for bay area animal shelters. the solution now being offered by one local group. the 10:00 news continues in just 90 seconds.

tomorrow's event. >> i definitely don't want it to get into the way of my schedule and inconveniences. but people have their first amendment rights. >> reporter: the online activist known as anonymous helped organize a protest last monday. today we spoke to peter fine who says he isn't an official spokesman but works with anonymous. and he adds that he does not participate in anything illegal. >> what is this? is this the middle east? like this is america. we don't do that. we just quite simply we don't do that. free speech is what makes this country different. >> reporter: and despite the outcry, b.a.r.t. representatives tell us it could happen again. today the head of the police union tells us to keep the piece. >> i think the frustration

levels will rise and there may be, may be something like that occurring. >> reporter: no one from b.a.r.t. would talk to us on camera about tomorrow's planned protest. it's set to start tomorrow after 5:00. although some organizers say some people could make their way down from platforms. b.a.r.t. released a statement on their controversial decision to shut off cell phone service. we posted it in its entirety on our website ktvu.com. just click on the b.a.r.t. protest tab. police are investigating a deadly shooting at a birthday party in antioch last night. someone opened fire around 10:15 at a house fire on sevile. the shooting sent a 16-year-old to the hospital where he died. a 17-year-old girl from antioch was also shot.

she's expected to survive. no air arrests have been made. in castro valley two people are recovering after a shooting early this morning. officials say the victims two men and a woman were leave ago near by club when they were shot. their injuries are nonlife threatening. investigators are not releasing any details on suspects. police in santa rosa today released the name of the toddler killed by a hit and run toddler on thursday. the police say they got a tip on the driver's whereabouts and later arrested 22-year-old marcos lopez garcia of santa rosa. he's being held without bail in the sonoma county jail. nevado health officials say two bears have been killed.

they will allow the killing of 20 bears. only six can be female. wildlife commissioners suggested it may reduce human- bear conflict in the reno and lake tahoe areas. texas governor rick perry returned to his home state today after a week spent campaigning in new hampshire, iowa and south carolina. hundreds of people turned out to welcome him home. governor perry told the crowd he's basing his campaign on a history of job creation. a claim widely disputed by some including texas democrats. perry has come under fire for saying he does not believe in global warming. huntsman is trailing in the polls and says his campaign has to get more aggressive. the former utah governor has

highlighted perry's support for teaching creationism and also suggesting ben bernanke would be treasonnist for suggesting growth. there's still no deal on a new contract but union leaders and verizon management have hammered out a frame work that's getting them back to the bargaining table. the two sides must still grapple with the issues that caused the me negotiations to break down in the first place. well a possible solution tonight to a big problem facing many bay area animal shelters. claudine wong tells us tonight about a chihuahua only offer. >> reporter: they are tiny, some weighing in at just about 6 pounds. but what they lack in size they are apparently making up for in numbers. the chihuahua population is

booming in california and rescue groups are in crisis mode. >> it's amazing how many chihuahuas are filling up california shelters. ours has currently 30 in the system. if you go to public facility, county facilities, over 30% of the dog population can be chihuahuas. so there's a real crisis in california and it's causing a lot of shelters to ship them out of state. >> reporter: so a donor who took this problem to heart decided to respond with his wallet. donating money so that chihuahua owners could come to the tony la russa center could come and get their chihuahuas neutered. >> unfortunately we cannot fill up our spay/neuter

there are new rules being quietly proposed this summer that could have a massive effect on the bay area's remaining handful of steel foundries. those industrial survivors say the laws could shut them down forever leaving thousands out of work. supporters of the new rule says big steel has to clean up its act. our mike mibach takes a look in tonight's special report. this is a place few people in the bay area get to see. the fact that the place lots of bay area people are shocked to learn still exists. this is a fiery heart of a working steel foundry a place where iron, and a brew of other

elements are brought to 3,000 degrees. like everything there is a cost, one of them is air pollution. >> there has to be some sort of trade. >> reporter: devin hebinoski is a historian that met us across from where one used to exist. most of the bay area's steel factories are gone. there are fewer than a dozen left around the region. the bay area regional air traffic control district is now quietly proposing new rules the steel factories say could shut down these last few foundrieses. >> we're not looking at major changes, we're looking at improving the way air pollution is reduced at these facilities. >> reporter: victor douglas says the air board's controversial proposals. >> what we're trying to do is to reduce the impact of these industrys to the local communities where people are

living near by. >> reporter: what's more, the over all air quality of the bay area though much improved in the last generation does not meet the new stricter quality standards. air officials says that one of the reasons it is looking to tighten rules for the factory. but carefully crafted rules are already in place. >> we believe they are definitely sufficient. >> reporter: allen representing the surviving air foundries. the stack behind him is emitting steam. >> you have millions of the dollars in state of art engineering controls to control the exact emissions. they are proposing significant financial investments and they have not quantifies what the health benefits are going to be. >> reporter: naturally there are environmental activists. >> i think they can afford it.

>> reporter: denny larson is the global emissions head. >> right now it's an estimated 20 million per company. >> barry scott works at pacific steel castings in the shorelines of oakland. >> that's going to be very difficult to continue to operate that way. and we've got alone here 600 people that, 600 people that cannot afford to be going and dragged through this type of ordeal. >> reporter: one could wonder if the fight is against air quality versus saving an american industry. perhaps underneath it all is the struggle to manage the bay area's changing history and what we are willing to give up to have a future.

in berkeley, mike mibach. a special group of tourists had a chance to see the san francisco police department put on a real live dog and pony show. they spent part of today at the exploritorium. members of the bomb squad, marine and motorcycle units were on hand as well. the kids of courage arrived in the bay area on tuesday. will fly back to new york after a week long vacation. an 8-year-old utah boy is home safe tonight after spending hours stuck in a chimney. little steven hopkins says he climbed an apricot tree to get into a chimney at a salt lake city house last night just blocks from his own home. officials say he was stuck for up to four hours before he was found. his mother just reported him missing. firefighters had to cut a hole in the wall to pull the little

boy out. >> what were you thinking when they finally pulled you out after all that time down there? >> i don't know. i couldn't think. my ears were all black. >> my ears were all black he said. the boy is doing fine aside with minor scrapes. when asked why he was tried to get in the home, he said he was looking for food and water. boys are reaching sexual maturity at an earlier age. researchers at the plank institute have determined that an 18-year-old boy today has the physical maturity of a 22- year-old from the time of the american revolution. as younger boys experience a puberty driven surge and testosterone they are more likely to take risks such as fighting, driving recklessly

well we are wrapping up a relatively cool weekend, at least cool for this time of year. plenty of low clouds and fog to start the day. the change in the temperatures is right now on the maps. we already have some fog out at the coast and pushing back into the bay. santa rosa reporting partly cloudy skies. here we go with the cloud deck moving into oakland. in fact, this was the scene today looking out over the bay at the transamerican building in the foreground. still that steady cloud bank pushing into the region. the steady on shore breeze. pretty much capping our temperatures over the next few days but tomorrow you will notice a change. for tonight, partly cloudy skies, cloud will continue to be on the increase tomorrow. tomorrow a little bit warmer, the extended forecast does feature warming temperatures. first thing tomorrow morning the fog for the coast and also right around the bay. maybe a few patches inland but not as much as we had this

morning. overnight lows, most of the area starting monday morning into the 50s. we've been talking a lot about low pressure into the next few weeks. this week we're talking about high pressure as it rebuilds in the desert southwest. you can see the net result into monday. warmest locations approaching the 90 degrees mark. by tuesday the warmest locations will be topping out into the lower 90s. but with the circulation around that high it will draw on some moisture. we are watching some activity to our south. this is remnant moisture from what was hurricane greg. we will pick up a few clouds on tuesday and especially wednesday morning. no thunderstorms in the forecast just yet. but historically these patterns have produced a few widely scattered thunderstorms. it's something we will be watching for tuesday and into wednesday. you can count on higher clouds pushing into the region. the fog around the coast and around the bay, maybe a few patches inland and heading back

to near the shoreline. still keeping cool. more sunshine as you do work your way inland. by 12:00, upper 50s to the upper 70s. then by 4:00 some warm numbers inland. temperatures back up into the mid- to upper 80s. here's a look at the numbers. santa rosa 83. walnut creek 84 and oakland in the lower 70s. san jose tops out 80 degrees. milpitas in the upper 70s. temperatures will be warming up a bit on tuesday. a little bit of a halt on wednesday as we get the clouds. warmest locations over the next few days, warming up to where they should be upper 80s and low 90s. music filled the air of the east bay as people filled the streets in oakland.

city center plaza was the place to be for the 11th annual art and soul festival. four stages presented entertainment while booths were filled with food and art. organizers say the festival has grown steadily since 2000 attracting 60,000 people last year. >> looks like a lot of fun. coming up next, an update on jason campbell. and the giants try to get back on the winning track as they wrap up their series against the stros. sports is up next.
