solution, it's going to be a fan-based solution. the fans decide weir going to be better fans. >> coming up, joe fonzi will talk to the current players about the violence and we have coverage on www.ktvu.com, go there to find the latest in the police investigation. to the civic center bart station in san francisco where there are a lot of police on hand and they could be on the verge of making arrests because of yet another protest. last week protesters shut down four stations. ktvu's david stevenson is outside the station. what is going on? >> reporter: let's go right now to the live camera where we can show you footage of one woman being arrested. taken up the escalator at the civic center bart station by bart police. this woman we believe is a protester who was down in place at civic center bart station

for the protest. this would be the third protest in three weeks. so far we have seen little sign of protesters gathering above ground here. you can see some of the bart police down stairs at the ticket center. so far many riders knew a lot about the protest and they took steps to make sure they will be long gone by the time the protest happened. >> reporter: he is checking out of his office early this afternoon, anxious to avoid a bart protest. >> crowds and pandemonium and i don't want to go anywhere near it. >> reporter: pandemonium from last monday and the shut down of the stations today prompted many bart riders to plan for the worst. >> i am going to try to leave early. i heard about the bart protest.

the platform along with the bart police and security people as we just told you, one person has been arrested. this protest appears to be taking place underground now. we seen little sign of protesters up here but the platform is quite crowded right now. bart officials told me they are prepared to shut down cell service again to disable any organizing of the protest, that is what prompted a protest last week to shut the cell service down. right now people are gathering at the plaza, we will continue to update you as developments come. reporting live in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. from david to the sky and look at what news chopper 2 is showing us. you can see people going up and down the steps at the civic center bart station. for the most part things look

normal. that is market street. traffic flowing well as we look and pan over to the civic center area. things look normal right now but underground at the civic center bart station platform it's a different story. one person detained already. there are lot of police cars. it's about a block away and this is the police staging area. a lot of officers and vehicles ready if necessary. right now things look okay on the platform. nothing has changed. boy, you can tell authorities are ready for the third protest in three weeks. we will stay on top of this. lot of people may have been attempted to get off the train and get into their cars about the protest this afternoon. >> reporter: it's impossible to know how many people did just that but here is what it looks like right now on the bay bridge. traffic appears to be flowing

smoothly. the lower deck is heading into the east bay. looks like the cars are moving along pretty nice clip there. here is how it looked this morning, delays that tol plaza reached 20 minutes and continued that way till after 9:00. sal castaneda reported a lot more slow traffic in san francisco this morning. many blame the chaos on "anonymous." they are behind the bart protest, including the one going right now, we caught up with a man who calls himself a associate of "anonymous." >> as many as it takes. you know, we will keep organizing until we get the rights that are ours. >> coming up at 5:30 more from that man and what those rights are. >> a judge said no to joseph

naso's request to delay his hearing. he wanted to put off the september 6 hearing to have more time to find an torn to advise him as he represents himself. he is accused of killing four women between 1977 and 1994. the judge said he didn't present a good enough reason to put off the hearing. right now we want to go back down underneath the civic center bart station. live pictures from the platform where moments ago we learned there has been another arrest. you can see as we have been reporting. a lot of police on hand. the protest was set to begin 10 minutes ago. hard to tell from this picture how many protesters are there. you can see a lot of media folks, some passengers and a lot of police. those folks in the jell-o vests

are bart workers. at least judging by these pictures looks like most of the folks are media, passengers or police. we will continue to follow this story because as has been the case the protests developed through the evening and you will recall a week ago today bart protesters shut down four stations during the height of the evening commute. looks like a animated conversation going on there. we will stay on this and keep you posted. the fbi captured a convicted killer who was on the run for decades. william ayres has been caught. he was involved in a 1966 robbery and killing of a bartender. he was captured in 1967 but he escaped in 1975. recent information put him on his trial -- trail, including the photo we are showing you here. he was caught last friday. the fbi made more arrests

in a drive way shooting 7 years ago that killed a 17-year-old boy. alex fernandez was walking with a car pulled up and one opened fire. friday investigators arrested anthony figueroa on murder charges. they believe he drove the car. in march they arrested the men. investigators believe the shooting was gang related. the conflict in libya turned into a celebration as libyan rebels are in control of tripoli. you see children line the streets cheering and waving the "v" for victory sign. rebels and linnians celebrated in green square and remaimed it martyrs' square, restoring its name to what it was called.

president obama called on moammar gadhafi to have all of his forces lay down their arms. >> the situation is still fluid. there remains uncertainty and still elements who pose a threat. this much is clear, the gadhafi regime is coming to an end and the future of libya is in the hands of its people. >> over the last two days nato assisted by hitting 40 targets with air strikes. there is still no sign of moammar gadhafi. loyalists say he will not give up quickly. the situation is followed closely by 50,000 libyan americans in northern california and robert handa is in the south bay with more. >> reporter: we are outside the mosque in santa clara where inside muslims have been praying for libya but many are

homicide lieutenant. fire officials say a woman may owe her life to a smoke detector. a two-alarm fire broke out at her home this morning and her home alarm system went off and that's what woke her up. >> i was thinking what should have y do. i looked for my phone and then finally i opened my bedroom and saw the smoke. >> probably saved her life. bought her time to get out safely. >> the woman picked up her dog and got outlet of the house. firefighters say it started in the garage. when it comes to the 20-20 olympics one thing is for sure, if won't be in the united states. they notified all interested cities it will not submit a bid to get the games. the problem here, the u.s. couldn't come up with a revenue

keeping a very close eye on irene. it is expected to travel up the atlantic coast on florida on thursday, packing winds up to 115 miles per hour, which would may be it a category three hurricane. at this point it could also hit south carolina on saturday. but there is a wide margin of error in the hurricane track. we are going to bring you live pictures from the air in southern california where two brush fires are burning along interstate 15. you see here a fire fighting vehicle. the fires started about 1:00 this afternoon. traffic is a mess. a mountain pass in western san bernardino county. the main connector between san bernardino and las vegas. you can see there is a lot of

dry land. the black part is what has been burned. 200 acres burned already. traffic also again is a mess here. whether wise with this, we spoke with chief meteorologist bill martin, what they have seen down here is different than what we have seen. >> it's been hotter. temperatures in this area in the 90s. humidity are down, in the teens and below. the winds, westerly wind. it's that time of year. the state of california, we haven't had rain since june or before that. we got a bunch of dry months here. as we in the bay area move forward into a warmer pattern we will worry about brush fires as well. we have been watching it, especially the newscast, we talk about brush fires. that's where we are going. it's going to heat up and fire danger is heating up.

we go outside and doesn't look hot here because it's been jackets and hoods. that's about to change. the fog will not have as big an impact as it has had. temperatures warmer. fairfield 87. livermore 85 and tomorrow at this tinal these inland temperatures may be in the low, mid-90s. 5-10 degrees warmer inland tomorrow. that pops the fire danger up. overnight hours, the fog will do its thing. just how it's been. not all the way out into the antioch area but there will be fog. overnight lowes in the 50s. quick burnoff tomorrow gets us warmer highs. mid-90s inland. this is the warmest weather we have seen this summer.

crowded right now. you have passengers, you have media, you have riot police in riot gear and you have protesters. what we are trying to figure out if this station is closed and it looks like, judging by the speed of that train that it may have been shut down because of the situation. this is another protest from the group "anonymous," calls itself "anonymous." stems from the shooting of a bart passenger who was shot and killed, that happened several weeks ago. following that another planned protest and bart cut off cell phone service, that made people mad, talking about free speech and as a result they have been protesting at bart stations. a week ago these protesters shut down civic center and marched down market street and

closed montgomery, powell and embarcadero. so far from what we understand this is isolated to the civic center bart station but again it looks like this protest is heating up a little bit and that this station, the service may be interrupted. we heard from david stevenson talking about how this time a lot of bart riders decided to come into work early so they could leave early and avoid lof this or perhaps stay at work late and go home afterwards. we will have more on when this group "anonymous" is, we will hear from someone who is involved with "anonymous," that is coming up at 5:30. prosecutors recommended dropping the charges against dominique strauss-kahn. police arrested him in may after a maid claimed he assaulted her.

prosecutors want to end the claim because of a lack of evidence. earlier her attorney asked for a especially state prosecutor to be assigned claiming new york city protcuters bundled it. the family of a girl said they decided to allow her to be at peace. she suffered brain injuries august 13 when high winds caused a stage to collapse. six others have died. starting tomorrow, new consumer protections for airline passengers. i am consumer editor tom vacar, how you won't get the run around much longer, still ahead.

there at the civic center bart station. at this point you see a lot of people, train just went through. this new information is the civic center bart station is closed. this has happened in the past. bart decided to close station because of the protesters and keep the people from on the train from being impacted. civic center bart station is closed. we see uniformed police officer and we see people in yellow safety vests. we see lot of people with signs and people with cameras. the group that is taking over civic center bart station once again for the third time in three weeks is called "anonymous." we talked about them before. you heard the name "anonymous" several times at this point and a lot of people want to know what does this group want to achieve. we have a lot of reporters on the scene and we will turn to

one of them now, alex savage spoke to someone with "anonymous" and me explained what they are after. >> reporter: the protesters say they will keep the focus on bart till they alter its policy. "anonymous" organized these demonstrations over the past couple of weeks. in part they did it via twitter and today we talked with a member of this group about what they want from bart. >> "anonymous" is not unanimous. people can do -- it's a flag, a banner that we can rally around. >> he works with "anonymous." although he doesn't take part in anything illegal. bart must apologize for suspending cell phone service. >> we will continue to be out here as long as they are willing to consider shutting

off cell service. the right to free speech. >> reporter: bart doesn't seem to be backing away from its policy. although the board president says he doesn't foresee a shut down. >> there is no need to turn off cell phone service but it is a tool we have. >> reporter: while members of "anonymous" disagree with that policy the group probably won't try to negotiate with bart anytime soon. >> whatever decisions, you know, they want to make we will see how the group responds. >> reporter: bart will hold a public meeting this wednesday morning in oakland to discuss the cell service policy. members of "anonymous" tell me they plan to attend that meeting. the organizer says if the policy doesn't change expect more protest and more cyber

. we want to show you pictures live inside the civic center bart station. actually outside civic center bart station. these are folks who are leaving the civic center bart station. there was a massive show of force on the platform from police in riot gear. they shut down the civic center bart station because of another protest. these are the folk whose have been told to leave the station. there have also been a couple of arrests. all of this is -- stems from the group "anonymous" upset that bart cut off cell phone service couple weeks ago to prevent a protest from happening there. another round of budget cuts may be in store for california colleges. short falls may trigger a cut back. that would be cut back in

courses, larger class sizes and community college fees could go up to $46 a unit. crisis could be looming for groups that provide help to the homeless. cuts to the same programs that spent millions to help the homeless. for oaklen $22 million could be cut. $19million for san francisco. >> cut housing programs, you are putting people at risk for homeless. having to choose between paying present. -- rent. >> 1.6 million americans spent one night at a shelter last year. ford and toyota will work together to make a new hybrid truck. it is expected to produce rear wheel drive pickups and suvs. a new survey reports salary

workers in the u.s. can expect modest raises next year. corporate profits are up but raises are expected to average 2.8% next year. the salary crunch is a reaction to all of the economic uncertainty we are facing. if you had to guess who has a more difficult time stay at home moms or moms who work outside the home. when it comes to depression working momes show less signs compared to moms that stay at home. that is what research found. but they also say women who thought juggling work and kids would be easy are more likely to be depressed. it says not for resale but some are trying to make a buck off food meant for the hungry.

civic center bart station, they shut it down. they marched down to powell station and shut down that station. if what happened last week happens this week the protesters could head down to montgomery station and'em and am shut down -- and embarcadero and shut down those stations. as david stevenson reported, a lot of people were prepared for this and decided to go into work early and leave early or go in late and leave late and hopefully avoid all of this. at food banks all over the area the need is great but not everyone is standing in line is eating it. ktvu's eric r shows us how -- eric shows us how people are selling the food and what one food bank is doing try to stop it. >> reporter: are you selling this food you got from the food bank? >> reporter: it wasn't a question he was willing to

answer but some say that's where this food came from. >> do you think it's not right to sell food you got for free? >> reporter: we counted six people selling food. she said it was a deal too good to pass up. >> i don't know why they do it but it ain't right. >> reporter: he told us he seen the same people get food from charities. >> come by here and sell it. >> reporter: that cheese is the kind we found at the food bank. officials say the food for sale represent as small fraction of all the food they distribute. they are serving 30,000 households a week, all the more reason to make sure it is getting in the hands of the people that need it most.
