amplified the shock waves. john-- >> reporter: this was an unusual earthquake here just south of the nation's capital. they are rare but also in california our earthquake faults move like this. here in central virginia, they move like this. the epicenter on the eastern flank of the appalachians, well known to moonie. >> this is where i grew up and this is where i did my research. >> reporter: while bay area faults go north and south, the appalachian faults are squeezed. >> the east has a different geology than we are used to here in california. >> reporter: it's a quake californians 50 miles away

would barely feel. fractured rocks despite the energy. east bay rocks remain more solid. >> this transmits shaking waves very efficiently so they're felt over long distances. as of just five minutes ago we discovered that the usgs is now reporting there have been three aftershocks, the largest magnitude 4.2 and they can continue for days. john fowler, ktvu channel 2 news. snipers were seen patrolling the roof of the white house immediately following the quake. the shaking could be felt 600 miles away on martha's vineyard where president obama was playing golf. the president says he didn't feel it but was notified just after it happened. back in washington, officials issued evacuation orders for the white house and surrounding buildings as a precaution. senator barbara boxer was speaking at an event in oakland around the time of that earthquake and she took a moment to talk about the situation on the east coast. >> those of us here understand

what earthquakes are all about. but for my staff and family that i have there, they honestly didn't know what was going on. >> reporter: senator boxer went on to say that all of her colleagues, friends and family in that area are fine. our coverage continues on ktvu.com. you will find more video from today's earthquake and a preparedness guide to make sure you're ready in the events of the big one just click on the east coast earthquake tab. in just the past ten minutes, a man was pulled to safety in the east bay hills where his car went off a cliff in oakland. we want to show you a live picture right now. this is from news chopper 2 where rescue crews have just put the driver of that vehicle into a chopper. we've been told that crews rescued one man that was ejected from the car. he's now being taken to the hospital. no word yet on his condition.

the punishment was handed down today to a patient who attacked and killed a napa state worker. ktvu's alex savage was in the courtroom as the victim's relatives asked the judge for a stiff penalty. >> reporter: 25 years to life in prison for massey. the former patient at napa state hospital strangled donna gross. >> he's a thug he's not going to survive in prison. >> reporter: gross' brother kapachi was one of the family members that spoke. kapachi says her sister was murdered by a man she was tried to help. >> she's a very caring individual. she lived for others rather than herself. >> reporter: gross was killed last october in this hospital courtyard. ktvu was allowed access to the area. this was one of many attacks on staff members that led to new

safety measures. rehab therapist marshall says that since gross' death, patients are not allowed to roam the hallways. >> our administration is listening to us. >> i don't think they were set up to handle a criminal like this. >> i loved my sister. and hopefully her death doesn't go in vain. >> reporter: the prosecutor in this case told us massey shouldn't have been here at napa state hospital, and she says now he is going where he always needed to be, prison. but massey will be eligible for parol in 25 years. an oakland man pleaded not

guilty in connection to a shooting. police say the shooting was gang related but that none of the victims was the intended target. tompkins is facing life in prison if convicted. dozens of bay area nurses hit the picket line to fight cuts. the nurses say staffing is already dangerously low putting patients at risk. >> nurses have had to come in and work extra shifts to get that covered, we're tired. we just can't have it. we need to let the public know that this is just not safe. >> reporter: kaiser today said the health and well being of our members and patients is our top priority at kaiser

permanente. we have begun discussions and are committed to bargaining in good faith. state lawmakers will discuss tomorrow whether california should ban circumcision. it comes after a judge pulled a proposed measure from the san francisco ballot to ban male circumcision. the state bill will find that the state has -- -- security measures which started after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and fan conduct which was added in the review back in 2008. some long time 49er fans say they have to band together

to keep games safe. they already have a tool, a text messaging system. one fan respoke with today said he uses it. >> all the time. hey this guy is being an idiot. text. >> reporter: joe lenore says he thinks the rash of violence isn't typical and police were almost overwhelmed by the number of fights. an update now on the most seriously injured fans from this weekend. a spokesperson at sf general tells ktvu a 26-year-old man from san rafael who was attacked in a restroom at candle stick park has now been transferred to another hospital and remains in fair condition this evening. a man who was stabbed four times outside the stadium remains in sf tonight in serious condition. and a third victim has been treated and released. sheriff's deputies arrested a man who was allegedly caught

on surveillance video breaking windows at city hall. deputies then arrested weaver on charges of felony vandalism. >> that was here early at 8:30 reporting to jury duty. i decided to come by and see the damage. it was extensive. all the top handles were broken, big holes and the individual did some damage unfortunately. investigators say it appears weaver was under the influence of drugs and or alcohol. fremont toyota faces a discrimination lawsuit tonight. it claims the dealerships former general manager called for afghan american sales men he called them terrorists reportedly and threatening to blow them up with a grenade. the eeoc says the man resigned a week later. b.a.r.t. riders went home early and

thousands of police officers were called out to make sure yesterday's protest didn't get out of hand. david stevenson is live with one of the costs from yesterday. >> reporter: the money went to reshuffle buses and bring out more drivers. police protesters and b.a.r.t. riders are gearing up for another possible protest next monday morning. >> i don't think they are getting any sympathy from b.a.r.t. riders. >> reporter: san francisco b.a.r.t. riders today said they are angry about the recent protests that have stalled train service. >> i think they need to stop, they're doing more harm than any good can come of it. >> reporter: activists say the protests are needed to confront police abuses.

they are also angry about b.a.r.t. cutting off cell phone service prior to a protest a week ago. >> we are going to continue until we see a policy and practice from b.a.r.t. >> i haven't haven't been able to find that out. we do budget for overtime on a yearly basis. it's not a huge cost to the organization. >> reporter: it's also unclear how the protests are affecting ridership. b.a.r.t. estimates 292,000 people road trains yesterday. the protest began at 5:00 p.m. that's 1,000 more people than road last monday. but it's still 6,000 fewer riders than a month ago. some customers say the protests are forcing them to make big changes. >> i've been taking the motorcycle in because it's quicker and you never know what's going to happen at the end of the day.

>> reporter: b.a.r.t. directors tomorrow are likely to get an ear full from b.a.r.t. riders and protesters about that fatal shooting and how the agency has since handled the protests. reporting live in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu. there is celebration in libya after rebels take over gadhafi's main military compound. at this time there's no word on colonel gadhafi's whereabouts. the obama administration is urging him to give himself up and prevent further bloodshed. sarah sidner was in the middle of all the chaos today in tripoli. she was inside gadhafi's compound as the rebels rushed in. >> the whole place has been secured by the rebels. and there are cars driving in and out easily. but there is still quite a bit

a flight instructor and a student pilot made an emergency landing today in east palo alto. it happened around 9:45 this morning while the two were practicing touch and go landings in a 1966 beach craft musketeer aircraft. while trying to land a wing clipped a tree. the pilot received an emotional reunion from his wife. >> he just bought the plane.

he just got it on friday and this is i think the first time. >> reporter: the pilot thinks what may have happened is that they ran out of gas in one of their tanks and couldn't switch over to the other tank fast enough. a new fresh food grocery store has opened and customers already have complaints. >> reporter: that's right the nearest place to pick up beer and wine used to be a little less than a mile away from this new grocery store. but now religious leaders are worried that these items are going to fall into the wrong hands. >> we don't need any more places selling alcohol in this community. we have enough. >> reporter: these religious leaders gathered outside fresh and easy. they want to know if the self- serve check outs will allow miners to get their hands on alcohol. today our cameras scanned the new aisles with the focus on

these machines. reverend carol bean says she has data that shows that teens can overrule the scanners. >> the machine can be scammed 60% of the time. >> reporter: in san francisco, only two violations occurred in stores like fresh and easy say owners. >> there's always a face to face interaction, an id check for anybody under 40. and making sure that anybody who's intoxicated also can't purchase alcohol. >> there's six days to sunday to do this. kids are on the internet telling people, other kids how to scam this machine. >> reporter: san francisco supervisor malia conley said in a statement, we all have a collected interest in ensuring that the bay view store is successful and will continue to work with the fresh and easy and the community to make sure that is the case. a representative from her

office met with those concerned today. >> a grand opening is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. an hour later the doors will open to the public right here at the fresh and easy. reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. more details now, a representative from supervisor cohen's office met with those concerned community leaders. of the 48 new employees, 21 come from the bay view neighborhood itself and another eight live in a san francisco zip code. chevron stocks saw a big surge. the company based in san ramon boosted. the surge also helped push energy stocks up and the price of oil to $86 a barrel. and it was a good day over all as investors picked up stock that is fell during the past months stock market swings.

in fact, the dow saw its biggest gain in nearly two weeks picking up 322 points to close at 11,177. the nasdaq gained 101 points. amazon is planning to keep its california taxpayers from paying more. they hope to overturn a state law requiring online companies to collect sales tax on purchases from residents. amazon started the anti tax campaign last month. it would allow voters to weigh in on that tax requirement. and the temperatures are going to start to drop off tonight as the fog returns. numbers tomorrow are going to be slightly cooler than today. especially inland. we go to the live storm tracker 2. there's the golden gate bridge. live buoy reading. the winds are gusting to 22. we have a westerly winds blowing back into the valley.

which today got into the mid- 90s. certainly one of the warmer days we've seen in the summer. like in livermore and antioch. it's hot inland, cool right along the coast. tomorrow temperatures trend down with that strong push of marine air. and then the next couple of days it starts to warm up. especially on friday and saturday. this is the reason for the cooling. you knew that. it just is dropping south that low again. it's picking up the fog, it'll give a strong push tomorrow and we're looking for temperatures to drop off five to 10 degrees. still a nice day. thursday about the same. maybe a little cooler than friday. we get into a cooling trend with 90s in the inland bay valleys. fire dangers are going to come up as you might guess. the fog tonight is going to linger at the coast. it'll be dense along the avenues. maybe some spotty drizzle but then it drops back. tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m. there's a little more fog. or 5:00 a.m. than we had this morning. it burns back. but the cooling and the strong

on shore wind continues so we're going to see cooling at the bay and at the coast. 90s are still inland, so it is still hot as you head toward sa sacramento and vacaville. tomorrow 44 cities where you live or near where you live. fairfield just 88. there's a 91 at antioch and brentwood. as you head out and you get farther into the valley. you're going to start seeing these 90s pop up and even into friday. friday and saturday we'll see more 90s in the interior valleys of the bay. 78 in fremont, 79 in milpitas. fire quality still good. when you do get numbers like we did today you'll get a few brush fires. in fact, we had some today. the weekend always in view and it's pretty warm as you head into the weekend. >> looks like a great week. >> definitely feel it out

facebook is giving users more control over what their friends do online. the site is now letting people preapprove photo tags of them before they are posted. that means the picture will not be tagged until the users approves them. mark is here now with sports, a's in new york and it's looking pretty good. >> if you can make it there you can make it any where, right. and they are making it i'll tell you that. 6-0. the a's just hammering the yankees right now in the 8th inning. and one guy is having a whole lot to do with that.

brandon allen a guy they recently acquired. and he has done this twice. look at how far that ball lands back in the stands. brandon allen first time he ever batted in yankee stadium. can't do much better than that. 6-0 in the eighth. full highlights tonight at 10:00. and frank kusemon was sitting .221. he was making a ton of errors, they traded him to colorado. in the meantime you have got to see this play that occurred in the minor leagues over the weekend. i guarantee you will never see something like this happen. look closely. shaffer ball hit him in the head. he kept his cool and threw the ball back in. there is two outs and there is three outs. a triple play that started with the ball hitting him. watch in the head.
