damage after a moderate earthquake. the 5.8 magnitude quake was centered 500 miles southwest of minyard, virginia. its impact was felt by millions. the east coast today got a dose of what the west coast feels all too frequently. as you can see here there was a whole lot of shaking going on. >> and it started shaking our computer so bad it almost came off our desk. we didn't know what it was until we came to the back and seen all the rocks and everything laying around. >> reporter: for some in the halls of power in washington, first thoughts were not of earthquakes. >> frankly given the upcoming anniversary of 9/11. my first thought is that something much more severe than a tremor was happening. >> reporter: the capital pentagon national monument and other buildings were evacuated when the ground started

shaking. s h a king. only the washington monument remains open with cracks on the top. the earthquake shook pinnacles after the cathedral. and it upstage add news conference in new york. two nuclear reactors were automatically taken offline. back up diesel generators provided power, no damage there. but in a few places in virginia, maryland and west virginia, roof tiles, chimneys and bricks tumbled to the ground. in this case crushing empty cars. >> it was definitely an interesting experience. i can knock that off my bucket list. you know. >> reporter: all shook up, easterners will be talking about this day for a long time. rita williams. >> the quake also shook a brick wall after the top of this

building. bricks fell on to adjoining walls. no one inside was hurt. excitement and concern after the quake clogged cell phone networks. so many people were trying to make calls at the same time that it shutdown. and there were also delayed at several busy east coast airports today at 10:30 tonight, we'll hear from travelers who felt the earthquake just before flying to the bay area. seismologists in menlo park say aftershocks will be felt for weeks to come. it was felt up and down the eastern seaborg. >> it's amazing, it's a world

it is the third straight month of declines and if sales continue to lag, 2011 could turn out to be the worse year for new home sales since recordkeeping started back in 1963. a 76-year-old man is recooperating after his car plunged off the cliff in the east bay hills. he spent two days awaiting rescue. ktvu first brought you this story live on our 5:00 and 6:00 newscasts. the car went off clairmont avenue. since then we learned a hiker first spotted the man. the driver says he fell asleep on sunday while behind the wheel and went over the edge. the man told emergency crews he tried to climb back up to the road but couldn't make it. he was air lifted to the hospital this evening. rescue crews say he is expected to survive. investigators are working tonight to figure out what caused a two alarm fire this afternoon in petaluma.

fire crews were called to petaluma processers. new at 10:00 tonight, a troubling trend in california school districts. more and more are cutting budgets. heather holmes has the story. >> reporter: as you can see here on this sign we are just one week away from the start of the new school year here in the mount diablo district. and tonight a plan was revealed that will shake up the entire school schedule for more than 36,000 students. the halls after mount diablo high school were empty today and they may be quiet for five additional days this year. looking to save $6 million the district is asking teachers to take furlough days. >> we're dumbing down our kids. i want our kids to learn more

not learn less. >> reporter: michael hanson has a son in the sixth grade. he does not support the district's proposal to trim the academic year. brings it to the state minimum of 275 school days. >> everybody is in a mind. but we have to think outside the box and we can't have our kids -- or sacrificing our kids education. the economy has deteriorated, more districts have a need more unpaid teacher and furlough days. >> in 2009 and 2010, only 20% of districts were shortening their school years. but in 2010-2011, 60% were saying they were going to reduce the school year. >> reporter: 20% of districts will drop to 275 days. mount diablo school president blasted state lawmakers for putting him in this situation. >> with the standards that we

need to instruct the students on, the studies have shown that we need 200 school days to do that. we are already at 180. so dropping it down to 175 is not a big deal. this is not the way the states should be balancing their budget. their budget. >> reporter: the school district president says that his teachers are not going to be happy. healther holmes. celebrations are under way in libya after rebel forces scored a major victory today. they stormed gadhafi's compound in the libyan capital of tripoli. the head of the statute of the dictator and luted armory. gadhafi released a statement

saying he left the compound before it was reduced to rubble as a tactic. a symbol of gadhafi's power is no more. after being pounded all morning by nato war planes, the libyan leaders compound was overrun by rebels. celebratory gunfire followed, the toll of the intense fire fight can be seen. as for the come colonel himself, his whereabouts is not seen. >> this is our country, this is our people. we live here and we die here. and we are going to win because the people are with us. >> reporter: pockets of fighting remain in tripoli, with streets and street gun

a big shake up tonight in the newspaper business. the bay area news group has decided to rebrand and consolidate several local papers in just three. ken wayne tell us the mass amount of papers in the bay area are going to disappear now. >> reporter: many would argue that the tribune died in 1972. but now this head will also disappear. >> the oakland tribune, that's old school. that's oakland. >> reporter: not anymore, the oakland tribune is joining several newspapers it owns into a single edition. pay rose used to be a paper boy for the trib. >> i'm not from fremont, not from hayward so to bunch it all into one paper, i feel like i'm going to lose some oakland news. >> reporter: but he and his wife say to be honest they haven't read the tribune for

area news group says its moving some of the staff back to downtown oakland. it could be the new home of the new east bay tribune. live in oakland, ken wayne, ktvu news. the san mateo times is also going to disappear. the bay area news group is going to fold into the san jose mercury news. ubs announced cost cutting moves that will result in thousands of pink slips. about 130 workers will be let go to reduce its costs. ubs stock has lost about 1/3 of its value in the last year and faces weaker earnings and slow economic growth. toyota unveiled the latest version of its popular camry model today. the camry has been the best selling model since 1992. but it lost ground after last year's recalls.

toyota has sold 100 million camrys since it introduced the sedan almost 30 years ago. the fire broke out about 12:15 this afternoon near patterson pass road and cross road. air tankers helped contain the fire to 147 acres. that's about 50 fewer than initially thought. two firefighters suffered ankle injuries, no buildings were damaged and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. firefighters in lincoln east of sacramento are having real trouble extinguishing a giant propane tank that caught fire today at a rail yard. the flames jumped from the 29,000-gallon tank even as crews poured water on it. as a precaution, calfire evacuated nearly the entire town of lincoln. more than 4,000 people. no word on how long that fire could burn but crews have decided to let the fire burn itself out. dominique strass-kahn is a

free man today after sexual assault charges were dropped against him. kahn says the case has been a nightmare. the accusations of a hotel maid forced him to resign. prosecutors dropped the case saying the woman had died in quote virtually every interview. the question for a u.s. district court judge in chicago today was whether former illinois governor rod blagojevich should get another trial. prosecutors say his conviction should stand. today was sentencing day for a patient from napa hospital. >> reporter: on the steps of

the napa county courthouse, daniel kepachi remembered his sister. >> i just love my sister. and hopefully her death doesn't go in vain. >> reporter: donna gross was killed by a man she was trying to help. gross was a psychiatric technician at napa state hospital strangled to death by one of her patients, jeff massey. today a judge sentenced massey to 25 years to life in prison. >> he's a thug, he's not going to survive in prison. >> reporter: ktvu was allowed access to the hospital courtyard where gross was killed last october. her death and a series of other attacks on staff members has now led to new safety measures. marshall says since gross' murder patients can no longer roam hospital grounds without supervision. >> our new hospital is

new at 10:00, firsthand accounts from today's earthquake in the east coast by people arriving today. >> reporter: news of the quake spread quickly. on twitter within the first minute there were more than 40,000 twitts about the quake. here at sfo it was the talk among arriving passengers from jfk airport. >> reporter: at united airlines baggage claims we spotted susan cousins of fairfax, virginia just minutes before she landed. she described what it was like at the airport. >> the doors are automatic doors that open. they were literally waving and they were really, really shaking. >> reporter: several passengers told us at first they didn't know what was causing the

afterward saying a 5.8 magnitude earthquake just occurred and then we understood what had just happened. >> reporter: passengers we spoke with told us they arrived on time, we also check with the duty manager here, she told us the earthquake did not affect any flights arriving or departing from here. reporting live here at sfo, amber lee, ktvu channel 2 news. parts of colorado were also hit with an earthquake, the strongest in more than 40 years. store surveillance cameras caught items falling off of shelves, that quake hit late last night. there was some damage but no reports of any injuries. it was centered about 180 miles south of denver. the u.s. geological center says that area is not known for having earthquakes. hardware stories are doing

yet another deadly accident at yosemite national park. rangers recovered his body today. the man's identity is still yet not been released nor have the circumstances surrounding the fall. about three weeks ago a 26-year- old woman from san ramon also fell to her death from half dome. and earlier this month, a 17- year-old boy fell after falling at a popular trail at the park. a student pilot learned a frightening lesson when he was forced to make an emergency landing on the field. the plane landed near the edge of the bay in east palo alto. maureen naylor shows us what happened and the emotional moments afterward. >> reporter: the beach craft musketeer came down while a student pilot and his instructor were practicing take off and landing.

while 300 feet up. the plane's engine sputtered and stalled then the engine lost power. while the ntsb is investigating, the occupants have one theory. >> they seem to think the possibility of running out of fuel in one of the tanks. not being able to switch over to the other tank fast enough, the plane sputtered and fell. >> reporter: the pilot described his landing and his reaction. >> it's a beautiful landing, soft. happy, i'm alive. it's a beautiful day. >> reporter: the pilot was reunited with his wife. the two shared a long tearful embrace while their 8 -month-old son sat unaware of the ordeal his father survived. >> he just bought the plane. he's still learning how to fly. >> it's amazing they could land it without injury.

nevada department of wildlife officials say four bears have been shot since nevada's first black bear hunting season started four days ago. a male bear weighing almost 500 pounds was killed today above tahoe. nevada is allowing the hunt after a huge spike in the number of bear incidents in the tahoe area. the nevada wildlife commission set a maximum quota of 20 bears through december. fish and game numbers show hunters killed 1,500 bears last year. that number is for the entire state. most of nevada bears are in

coming here like limited time for tailgating, texting police if they see a problem during the game. eric rasmussen. there's new concern about bryan stow. there has been a set back, he is currently running a high fever and is suffering from urinary tract and staff infection. the family calls stow's condition a step backward but says he remains conscious and is able to recognize family members. their statement said in part, nobody should feel afraid to root for their team or bring their families to games. when someone is injured they are not the only victims. their families, loved ones and worse of all their children are victims as well. the reward for information leading to a conviction of the hit and run driver who killed a prominent san francisco

attorney has been increased now to $12,500. a funeral was held for don casper this morning. casper was struck and killed while jogging on river road and sonoma county. investigators say the hit and run driver was in a white pickup truck with an extended cab and a gold stripe around the bottom. and the fog is right back at the coast but it's not that far inland so it's still pretty warm right now in napa it's 72 degrees. i have an 82 degrees reading. it's pretty warm still around the bay area. i'll update this a little bit. you can see 73 in san jose. the cloud and low clouds are going to pick up tonight. everyone some clouds are going to move in. high clouds, i did mention this a chance of a thundershower in the north bay tomorrow morning. it's an outside chance but some of the -- i'll show you, some of the things have come together could allow that to happen. bottom line, tomorrow a little cooler than today. as we head into friday, temperatures start to warm up
