continues, this is ktvu channel 2 news. good morning, thank you for joining us, it is wednesday august 24th. i am pam cook. >> and i am dave clark, here is mark, good morning mark my favorite surfer. some dense fog showing up on the coast and for the rest of the bay area most cooling off 5 to 10 degrees from yesterday's highs. warmest locations right around the 90-degree mark. sal standing by with an update on traffic. good morning. the fog is pretty thick in southern marine county and perhaps just use caution as you drive through the area. also if you are driving on the san mateo bridge traffic looks good getting to the peninsular. let's go back to dave and pam.

we had a quake right here in the bay area just before midnight and the newsroom was flooded with your phone calls. our reporter is near the epicenter and i know they felt it there. >> reporter: they did feel it here and we just heard this is officially a 3.9 earthquake and bigger than initial reports putting it at 3.6 or so and 6,000 people reported they felt it. we certainly know they felt it inside this 711 because we -- 7 eleven and he said he was taking a break and felt like it went from one end of the store to the other and just like that it was over. that is what we have been hearing from most people who say it happened quick but it certainly scared some people.

>> i was sitting in my car with my friend and i said stop shaking my car and he said you are shaking the car and i said no stop playing man you are shaking my car and after that we found out it was an earthquake. >> reporter: back here we spent the last hour driving up and down this main drag that heads to oakland trying to figure out how many people felt it and as we go the further down the street people were saying, what earthquake. it depends on where you are and one man said he was in his apartment and felt the walls were going to crack inside his apartment. we moved to other stores and nothing fell off the shelves here at 7ee very vend -- eleven. following that strong quake strongest since world war ii.

the biggest rattled virginia just a few hours ago following the 5.8 quake that hit early yesterday afternoon and it was centered in rural virginia just about 80 miles from washington d.c. the big quake jolted many people all the way to south carolina really shook up washington d.c. and emergency crews evacuated the pentagon and several other government buildings shortly after the ground started shaking. the washington monument will be evacuated indefinitely after engineers found cracks in the top. >> a i can't remember anything as dramatic as this. >> the big quake knocked pinocles off the national cathedral. there was damage reported in more than a dozen states and for the hately no serious

injuries are reported. this sends a clear message to everybody living in quake country. it is a reminder that earthquakes can hit any time anywhere. it shook up the nation's capital and people working in the washington d.c. bureau people were forced out on to the street and we will check in with them in a live report coming up in just a few minutes. another big story, the stage is now set for a showdown and in just a couple of hours bart's board of director will meet face to face with protesters who have been disrupting bart commutes. live right now good morning kraig debro. >> reporter: good morning and protesters want answers as to why cell phone service was shut down and we spoke to a spokesperson representing some of the mechanics and she told

me the unions are actually upset over what happened bart trying to shut off cell phone service during this planned protest back on august 11th. back on august 11th, a group protesting the deadly police officers involved -- police officer involved shooting they say protesters were coordinating their efforts using cell phones so they eliminated that at four san francisco stations downtown for three hours and nobody could use their cell phones not only protesters but people riding the trains. he agrees with bart's decision but limits it to certain circumstances. >> if it was a safety issue and that was a reason, but it if it was to clearly stop the protest and stop people from exercising their free speech in a peaceful

positive way i don't agree with it. >> bart said they shut it down. now bart ended up closing the stations on monday and unlike the 11thth bart did not shut down cell phone service. shutting down the service angered protesters and in fact they are no longer talking about the officer involved shooting and monday's protest was because of the cell phone service being shut down. the u.s. attorneys office is also talking about this and we are hoping to speak to people who were out that day and you will hear from the union rep tis who -- representative who opposed the shut down of cell phone service. shots were fired at a san francisco police officer and it happened just after midnight on bay shore boulevard and silver

avenue. a gunman ran towards the police officer and started shooting. the officer was in plain clothes and in his own car. he was not hit but his car was damaged and he is described as an african-american manwareing baseball cap and jeans. he is described as riding in a car with tinted windows in an eldorado dough and if you have any information call the police department. a man stabbed in front of his apartment and it happened at the park meadow apartment complex at 5:00 yesterday evening. the 24-year-old man was standing in front of his apartment when another man came up stabbed him and ran away. the victim suffered minor injuries and police say this attack appears to be unprovoked. oakland police officers still have problems with their

radios including areas where radios go dead. they installed a new $18 million radio system but officers are still running into problems with dead zones across the city as well as dropped calls. they are working to fix the problems and next montanan ten in site will be -- a new antenna sight will be installed to eliminate those dead zones. a new california lawmaker wants to get tough with unrulely sports fans. they are looking to draft legislation increasing jail sentences for people fighting at sports events. they want to create a fun for prosecuting these men like the men convicted of beating bryan stow. bryan stow family released a

statement about violence about the raiders game and quoting, they say we have felt this tragedy did not happen to brian for nothing. nobody should feel afraid to root for their team or bring their families to games. they also say pipe ann's -- bryan stow's condition has worsened. he took a couple of steps backward or coming forward. he is running a high fever and has developed some infections that doctors are treating. 6:09 is the time and let's go back to sal. sal, smooth commute? >> yes, as a matter of fact we have a nice one this wednesday. let's look at the bay bridge and the clouds up there. all right, we will come to him in a moment. no major problems trafficwise and this is a look at 237 and

that traffic is looking good, speaking of the valley, all the way to castro valley and if you are driving southbound it looks good from heyward all the way to fremont. we also looked at 237 but the rest of the bay is looking good slow traffic approach willing 101 and -- approaching 101. >> let's go to mark. a few showers and the radar loop those clouds looped up with a storm from a few days ago and it may have felt muggy and humid yesterday but it is the same story today. fairfield livermore 60s and san francisco right around 56 degrees. watch out for the dense fog for the coast and also into the

hurricane irene was upgraded to category 3 and emergency crews are evacuating people on the island. the vacation spot has 800 year round residents and is only accessible by boat. the first ferry had about a dozen cars on it. people have been stocking up on supplies and irene is now over the become as. pore casters predict it will hit the north carolina coast and on to chesapeake bay. puerto rico is trying to clean up and a 62-year-old woman tried to cross a bridge and died. power was knocked out to more than a million people there. they will receive disaster assistance. new fighting in libya this

pro bane tank -- pro pain tank rail car still on fire and we checked in with a reporter who said there is a real chance this thing could explode. a number of houses have been evacuated as a precaution and schools in the area are closed. that was the reporter right there and we will be checking in again and that rail car still burning just outside sacramento. a lot of east coast residents are still shaking after a rare 5.8 magnitude earthquake rocked that region. live in washington d.c. where they are not used to earthquakes back there, good morning carol. >> reporter: good morning, david. you can see we are constantly thinking about terror attacks so that when the building started shaking we all stopped looked at each other and ran for the door. check out this good video of

how the quake shook the d.c. region and the shaking lasted 45 seconds and prompted the evacuation of every building including federal agencies and national monuments. when all was said and done we only found minor damage to buildings including d.c.'s largest landmarks. at the national cathedral parts of the tower fell to the ground. she thought the worst when she felt the shake. we are front new york so it was a lot. >> reporter: this morning building inspections are taking place so schools in the d.c. area as well as federal agencies will remain closed. as for the after shocks geologists have reported a few taking place but none that i felt. live in washington ktvu channel

2 news. well an audio message was broadcast on television from muammar gaddafi calling on the libyan people to free tripoli from the devils who have over run it. the rebels continue to celebrate the take over in tripoli but they did not find muammar gaddafi. his whereabouts are still unknown and they say it is clear his regime has nearly collapsed. we stand with the proud people of libya at this historic time. their transition occurs with people whom we have daily cons tact as they -- contact as we prepare for the transition. >> they still control some parts of tripoli including a hotel where 45 journalists are trapped. power to the hotel has been cut off and supplies are running

low. new this morning a spokesperson for the president says north korea is ready it test nuclear missiles. this is the president meeting today in russia. north korea is ready to resume its nuclear program without conditions. the last round of party talks include united states and china and north korea which occurred in 2008. 19 minutes afte 8:00 let's check in with sal and they need to know how the roads look. let's look at the traffic it is getting busier around the bay. traffic looks good on 101 getting up to the 80 split there is a bit of fog coming through the picture but it is

not causing a visibility for drivers. ing at 880 and oakland, perhaps you are trying to catch a flight it should be a nice drive for you there. this morning in the southbound already 101 approaching the capital expressway but we don't see too much going on for the santa clara valley just yet. let's go to mark. some dense fog right around the bay this morning and of course temperatures warmed up nicely. you can see a few high clouds and those could be linked with what was once a hurricane spinning off the bah-hah a few days ago and even producing a few showers up towards the county this morning. temperatures will begin to cool off from yesterday's readings and cooling will continue for tomorrow and we warm back up by the weekend. it is mild out there looking out towards fairfield oakland 60 and san francisco 56 and

mountain view 60 degrees. warming 5 to 10 degrees and warmest locations inland upper $80 to right around the 90- degree mark but here is a look at your extended forecast. there is that cooling for thursday a little bum am that -- bump that will be taken and will be back up to low-to-mid 90s. another weather check will come up in just a few minutes. they jumped 4% in july and the demand for commercial aircraft and heavy duty transportation was up. automotive parts increased more than 11% and were better than numbers expected and hopefully it can turn things around on wall street. they are taking a page from wal- mart's planning manual and they plan on bringing 1 super

. good morning traffic is getting just a little bit busier in san francisco maybe a ten minute wait as you make it on to the bridge. let's go back to the desk. a capitoa fire station that was flood damaged just a few months ago has reopened. steaks number 4 was one of several buildings in march and firefighters were housed in march at the live oak fire station. today a reopening ceremony will be held this afternoon. a body from the half dome has now been recovered. he fell about 6:30 while

climbing half dome and we don't know his name yet and park rangers are not saying what caused him to fall. this is the third deadly accident in just three weeks. 26-year-old woman fell from half dome and earlier this month a 17-year-old boy died after falling off a popular trail. they are planning to shorten the academic year to save money. they want teacher to take 7 furlough days. they also call for pay cuts and pay freezes and if it is approved the school year will be 175 days. >> we have to think outside the box and we can't sacrifice our kid's education for that. >> the furloughs are to save $6 million and the teacher union

will bring its own contract proposal. talks will begin next month. you will see a new version of your newspaper and it will cost more than 100 workers their jobs. an earthquake hits the bay area overnight but talking to people they say it is a lot -- it felt a lot bigger. and in a few moments pam will have early stock numbers. we have been speaking to people in other areas and that's the general consensus that it happened quick and fast and they thought it was bigger than 3.6 and they thought they were dealing with something more significant. we spoke to a man who was at work going about his business when that earthquake hit. >> i was sweeping the parking lot and it rolled from south to north a couple of times. it was a good shake and i thought somebody had hit the end of the building so i got up and said, earthquake. i just totally ignored it. >> reporter: was it quick? >> it lasted a few seconds actually it was pretty forceful, is what it was. >> when you went back inside did you check to see if anything fell? >> yes, well we have a wine section and i was waiting to

see the balls fall down but like i said it was pretty strong. we spoke with some people heading into oakland and there is no evidence of the shaking going on. maybe it is part of the earthquake on the east coast and part of the fact that california people are certainly aware of that. we did get posting on the fails book page -- facebook page talking about this earthquake because it rattled some people's nerves and once people felt it and once they knew everybody was okay they moved on with their day because as we said, this is california, the bay area. ktvu channel 2 news. >> cough course everybody is talking -- of course everybody is talking about the damage on the east coast and still people are talking about a quake earlier this week that jolted

colorado. the strongest one there in more than 40 years. it hit a wide area of colorado and look at these pictures. it was sent terribled in denver and these capture -- and these captured most of the damage. >> a lot of liquor, that was the most costly item there. >> they are saying there was moderate damage and no word of any injuries. school lunches could soon cost more in the red wood district. tara moriarty tells us about a plan that is being debated tonight, tara? >> reporter: school has been back in session at the red wood elementary school for two days and they are pushing for more when it comes to nutrition.

red wood city trustees will vote on whether to increase it 25-cents. the district would then pump the money back into the food and we are talking about a larger array of fruits and vegetables. they have not raised its prices in nearly a decade. lunches in other areas cost nearly $5 and they have much more choices. nutritionists say better food means better fuel for alert minds. red wood city offers the cheapest school lunches and if it is a proved it would still cost $1.75. live in red wood city, tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. prosecutors will hold a news conference today about the

jeanine harm's whom said case. the d.a.'s office said they have new information about this mysterious case. the woman disappeared ten years ago and police believe she is dead even though her body has never been found. last january harm's brother shot and killed a man who had been charged with her murder. an interim police chief for oakland schools and he stepped down from the job and is being replaced because of making slurs. the coalition for justice will be part of that protest which by the way is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in oakland. the stage is set for a showdown in oakland in just a few hours. bart's board of directors will

be meeting face to face with protesters affecting commutes. 100 bay area newspaper employees will be losing their job starting the beginning of the year. they will be san jose news, the times which is all the papers along the 680 corridor and the tribune made up of all the alameda county newspapers. he said he feels he is losing something important. >> i am not from fremont so i feel i can going to lose some oakland news. >> he admits he and his wife have not red the tribune in years but like many others they go online. starting posts and starting tomorrow they will have their

on, sal? not a lot of major crashes but the slow traffic is beginning to form on many of the bay area highways and even though we don't see it in oakland you will see slow traffic in other places getting to this point and in fact most people start off on 580 and those areas are getting close. so is highway 4 in oakland and there is an accident in richmond 580 eastbound harbor way on the right shoulder and that came in as we were speaking 6:37 which is about a minute old. traffic is backed up with a minute delay. northbound 101 at mckey road there is incident on the left -- accident on the left shoulder. we have a camera there, it already sounds like it is a minor accident thank goodness.

is less than a quarter of a mile so be extra careful this morning. the fog is making a come back. here is the weather system we have been tapping which turned into a hurricane in terms of moisture and the cloud cover. we could have more humid conditions for later on today and as far as the fog pulling back to the coastline near the afternoon hours more sunshine working your way inland and for the beaches temperatures only in the low-to-mid 60s. around the bay partly cloudy skies skies patchy fog mostly sunny skies in the afternoon hours, no more upper 90s. and these numbers represent about a 5 to 10 degrees cool down compared to yesterday's readings. san mateo 76 and your weekend in view temperatures cool off thursday and minor warming by

the weekend. well it was a close call for students in iowa, they evacuated just moments before it exploded. a special bart hearing why they shut off cell phone service and they are not the only ones upset you will hear from the president of the union and how they feel about that decision. traffic northbound 101 traffic is beginning to slow down as you head up san jose in sunny dale.

. here is a quick look at some of the top stories we are following, the bay area had an earthquake overnight. a magnitude 3.6 centered near more written county -- also found near san francisco. no injuries were reported. search continues for a man who tried to kill a police officer. his car was damaged no injuries reported. antigovernment forces and rebels took control of muammar gaddafi's compound however they are firing shells at the rebels in the company pound today.

well the -- compound today. in just a few hours they will hold a special meeting and kraig debro is live at the station this morning, i am curious have you heard if any of the protesters will attend this morning's meetings. >> reporter: we have not heard about that but the fact that bart cut off cell phone service they do organizing online and they continue to do that and the station is held near where the special board meeting will be held and they spoke it wsomebody who said they were kept out of the loop completely and it made it harder for them to do their jobs. they want to explain to the public why they decided to interrupt cell phone service august 11th and it was held to draw tension to officer involved shootings.

two weeks later they are protesting cell phone stoppage in order to prevent protesters from planning. we spoke with somebody who thinks it is wrong and the leader says the decision was also wrong. >> i don't work in the station but i am more concerned about the fact that they couldn't call family or communicate with anyone and we didn't have a response for them because we were not aware of it and that's a problem. >> reporter: it is a potential problem for their decision to cut cell phone service and monday protesters were able to shut down cell service but protesting took part in the street and they protected the public without shutting down cell phone service and protesters once again stormed bart but bart did not need to cut off any cell phone service

and in addition to talking to the president maybe we will catch some headed up to the meeting. reporting live kraig debro ktvu channel 2 news. boy some incredible terrifying moments for a bus filled with school kids in iowa. some 7th and 8th graders coming home their first day of school saw smoke coming from their bus. kids started screaming as the bus exploded into flames. they got the school kids out safely and no word on what caused this fire. kids said later they had a great story to tell for show and tell. >> my goodness. thank goodness for the quick thinking actions of the driver. 648 is the time. pam, dave? this morning you will have traffic in many areas and we

are starting off in san jose because last time i told you about a crash 101 on mckey traffic will be a little bit slow in this area especially as you drive closer to interstate 80. let's look at what we have with 880 northbound and that looks good passing the coliseum. of course we are looking at the bay bridge toll plaza and that has a 15 minute wait. back to mark. the fog is making a come back and you can look at this with yesterday's forecast it will be cooler 5 to 10 degrees from yesterday 'highs. fog will reduce visibility and we are tracking a few showers earlier and right now a few showers moving through mendocino county primarily to the -- primarily to the north of ukiah.

especially coast side we will be cooling off and a little bit more cooling for tomorrow and the weekend and we warm things up especially by sunday. look at this weather system out in the pacific. hurricane greg, we have a few high clouds out there could feel a bit muggy as we head to the afternoon hours. hurricane irene is packing winds of 115 miles per hour winds and it is approaching the bahamas. remaining offshore to the eastern seaboard it is approaching new york and also boston as we head into the weekend possibly. here is our forecast pulling back to near the shoreline into the afternoon hours and temperatures coming down on average about 5 to 10 degrees from yesterday's highs and that means warmest locations in the 90s and mid-80s mountain view

right around 80 degrees and your weekend is always in view, a little cooler for tomorrow and mine more warming by tomorrow. the risk of failing is getting smaller and the list of problemmed banks is now 865. it is down 23 from the first quarter of this year and it's the first time the list has gotten shorter but executives say the number of banks at risk of failing is at historic highs. it looked like a 100 point drop on the opening and we had decent durable goods order before the opening bell. a live look dow jones industrial average 11198. the world's largest shoe company has the largest barefoot running shoe. it is designed to mimic the

. former first lady nancy reagan is okay. reportedly she tripped over an upright post right there and marco rubio was there to catch her. he had a good grip on her and she didn't fall all the way to the ground. by the way marco rubio had been invited to speak at her husband's library. it was delivered to his studios hazmat determined the powder was harmless.

the fbi is investigating who may have sent that letter. a 76-year-old man's car went off a cliff and spent two days waiting to be rescued. it happened on sunday. a hiker spotted the man's car yesterday afternoon and a park ranger believes the man fell asleep and went over the edge. he told emergency crews he tried to climb back up the road but he couldn't make it. he is expected to survive. one of nascar's biggest stars lost his driver's license for an incident away from the racetrack. they took away kyle bush's license for 45 days after he pled guilty to speeding and reckless driving. the judge ordered him to pay $100,000 fine and sentenced him to community service and by the way he does not need a
