commander who laid out what his officer faced when he was pulled from his post at pinol valley high. on wednesday an emergency call put him back in his squad car driving toward an attempted armed robbery. >> we had a suspect down. we had a guard down. and he was one of the first guys there getting information out and doing his job. every day officer taft protects kids but on this day the commander says his officer used skills he learned elsewhere. >> tack is a great guy, he was a combat patroller on the army combat. >> reporter: the officers say they are still investigating how tack was shot. >> i'm glad i sat in my car and called my daughter. i felt that saved my life. >> reporter: we learned police

arrested another man william fuller. he's accused of driving the get away car. officers haukis is recovering at the hospital. another security guard was also shot. the guard is recovering. as for suspect freddy daniel he is still in critical condition tonight. reporting live from pinol, jade hernandez. police raided a nuwark this morning. police from nuwark, hayward and fremont took part in the raid. they arrested three people. someone who lives in that neighborhood told us police moved in quickly and in force. >> they started kicking doors down. cops come down the street, they had the whole street lined with police. i didn't know what was going on. i heard bangs, i heard helicopters, i seen a bunch of stuff. it was crazy, i didn't know what was going on. >> neighbors say that people would come and go from the home

at all times of the day and night. police say more arrests may be made as a part of investigation. rebels have gained ground in their fight against forces forces loyal to gadhafi. the fighting has taken a fuel human toll. hundreds of civilians fill hospitals including children caught in the cross fire. and throughout the city, bodies line the streets. gadhafi is in hiding but he has recorded this message to his loyalists. >> reporter: do not leave tripoli, do not leave them. fight them, destroy them. you are the overwhelming majority. >> a spokesman for gadhafi says he is still in libya and that he is safe and healthy. >> the libyan rebels also released a number of inmates from a notorious prison in tripoli. this video shot by the rebels

you are looking live here at rightsville north carolina where people are already preparing for hurricane irene. the navy has moved warships out to sea to get them out of the hurricane's path. today irene has been pounding the bahamas. winds reaching 115-miles-an- hour. it caused an 11-foot tidal surge. right now irene is a category 3 but is expected to reach a category 4. people from north carolina up to maine are getting ready for irene's arrival. >> reporter: hi there gasia. it's a rather beautiful and quiet night here. but some models actually have this storm coming on land right

where we are standing. perhaps that's why it's rather quiet. a number of tourists have already left town. hundreds of thousands have been ordered to evacuate as irene barrels toward the u.s. irene made her mark on the bahamas. next in line, north carolina. in moorehead city people are taking this storm very seriously and packing up. something they haven't done in a while. >> we live in a stucco home so it's stable. short of a roof blow, i should be in just fine shape. >> reporter: the local lowe's hardware store has been extremely busy all day long. >> we will stay open as late as we possibly can. we just have to play that by ear and obviously we have to

keep our residents safe. >> reporter: residents will start evacuating friday morning. still some are trying to fit in one last minute a beach time. >> they ask if we wanted to leave today and we said no. it's just too beautiful today. you would never know a storm is coming. >> reporter: it's not just north carolina that's preparing. irene is expected to make her way all the way up the east coast so everybody is on alert. >> there's an element of unpredictability when it comes to the weather so we hope for the best but prepare for the worse. >> reporter: we're expecting the worse of the storm about saturday some time. but they are planning ahead. but the governors have already issued a case of emergency.

and the east coast preparing for the irene. new york city is also preparing for the worse. >> knowing that no matter what happens there's likely to be some significant impacts from this storm in terms of rain and wind. we're taking the step to make sure that the city is prepared. the federal communications commission is sending teams to boston and atlanta to be ready to deploy. emergency cell phone towers to maintain communications throughout that region. a category three hurricane is a very serious hurricane. our chief meteorologist bill martin is tracking it. >> the most fascinating thing here is day two and three when you get up to the new york area. in the carolinas saturday. this is pacific standard time. so our time 11:00 a.m. it's going to hit that area and

move right across through kitty hawk. this next move here as you go north. new york doesn't get hurricanes, but if this thing staying intake intact, that is an extremely -- that would be a big deal. it remains to be seen. it's still a ways out. the forecast for the fog is going to be pretty similar to what we saw this morning. right now we have fog in the avenues of san francisco all the way out to south on market out toward the ballpark. fog out toward krissy park as well. today's highs were nice. they were a lot like yesterday. tomorrow's highs will be warmer.

the oakland's as were on the wrong end of a record setter today. for the first time in history, a team hit three straight home runs today. unfortunately for the a's, it was the team they were playing. san jose's fire department received a boost. a group of firefighters who last their jobs last year are back on the force. >> i'm excited to get back in and help people. you have this drive to help people and be out there and do your job. >> reporter: ken allen and two dozen other firefighters who spent months off the job were laid off last summer during budgets cuts. but all have been rehired thanks to a grant from the federal emergency management agency. and today they received their

old badges during a reinitiation ceremony. one local congresswoman paid tribute to their service. >> when there is somebody who's fallen on the street and people are afraid, you come up and do medical treatment. when there's a fire burning and people are afraid, you burn in. >> 49 san jose firefighters were laid off in july of last year. 27 of them found work with contra costa county fire. the rest rejoined the san jose fire crew today. san jose also plans to hire and train even more firefighters recruited this july bringing the force back up to its original numbers. the jury will not be sequestered in the upcoming murder trial of michael jackson's doctor. attorneys had argued that there will be widespread media coverage of the trial. but the judge ruled against them saying he trusted jurors not to read or listen to news reports about the case. dr. murray is charged of giving

don't drink the water it has to be boiled or bottled to be sure it's safe after a water pump broke and taps ran dry. today those water worries are affecting people and businesses in bay area city. it's all happening in pescadero in san mateo county. rob roth is there now where he just got the results of the first round of water tests. >> reporter: well we're in

front of duharts restaurant in downtown pescadero. normally this place is busy but right now it's closed. that's because everybody in town has to boil their water or drink it from a bottle. this place is known for its fresh baked bread, but for the last few days its racks have been empty. the bakery is shutdown. >> we were really super busy. as soon as we open up people are lined up to get the bread and danish. >> and now? >> nobody. >> reporter: people usually come to this restaurant to get pizza or sandwiches. but the restaurant is closed too. >> there's no businesses, no hours for the workers. so we have to cut out some of the workers. >> reporter: at pescadero elementary school students are drinking bottled water. they're testing the water, the problem is a main broke and taps ran dry.

the pump has since been replaced but the state says until the water is tested, people shouldn't drink it. >> we feel there's a minimal threat right now. there's regulation governing the pot of the water. >> i'm not cooking very much. we're eating prepackaged items and using the microwave. >> reporter: i just learned the first round of test results show the water is clean. a second round of tests should be available tomorrow. if all goes well life in pescadero could return to normal as soon as friday afternoon. reporting live, rob roth, ktvu news. a federal judge in san francisco wants to record next week's hearing on whether to unseal footage of last year's trial over the constitutionality of proposition eight. the measure banned same-sex

marriages in california. backers of prop eight oppose recording the hearing and the release of court tapes. two east bay skate parks that a lot of people fought for are being ripped up by caltrans. ktvu's mike mibach live now with some saying that this makes it tougher for children. >> reporter: the fence is up, it is locked and there's no word, no signs of any skate park and that is because caltrans says it all comes down to these two words on the right. no trespassing. bulldozers, sweepers, all of them up and running underneath the mcarthur maze at 8:00 this morning. and today the skate park is no more. >> it's a sad story, it's a nightmare to me. >> they basically came through with the bulldozers and everything and got rid of it.

>> reporter: ron allen says caltrans will next demolish the skate park under the elevated portion of i80. >> the sad part now is it's now gone. it was not based on any place to do drugs, just a place to ride a skateboard. >> reporter: u.s. senator barbara boxer stepped in at the time and gave her support for keeping the park open. so the city of oakland then decided to lease the land from the state and the cate boarders were allowed to stay. >> the bottom line is, it was built illegally. without permission on state right of way. >> reporter: the former oakland city administrator sent a city saying it failed to renew the lease. >> if somebody is injured, there's a certain amount of liability that we'd have to face. >> reporter: for ron allen and his friends they say it is a dark day for them and the community. >> for it to be something that

put together a group called get the vote. a campaign spokesperson says they want to expand the electorat. a series of aftershocks continue to rattle nerves in the east coast this evening. following a tremor, there's been five aftershocks. the largest was a 4.5 that struck just after 1:00 a.m. this morning. a 4.2 and 3.4 magnitude quakes have also rumbled through the area near mineral virginia in the past 48 hours. meanwhile damage to one of the nation's most iconic landmarks appears worse than originally thought. engineers have found extensive cracks inside and outside the washington monument. blocks have cracked allowing light inside the spire. the monument will remain closed

we told you in the past that the golden gate bridge is getting a paint job but it's just taken longer to get that paint job under way. alex savidge is live to tell us why. >> reporter: when it's foggy

the way it is now, paint won't stick. crews are trying to paint the two cables on the bridge, it's more than just cot metic. it's to protect the thousands of steel wires inside those cables. from what little they can see of the golden gate, visitors don't think the iconic bridge is in need of a paint job. >> it's covered with fog. not really, it looks pretty good. >> does it look like it needs a paint job? >> not really. looks good to me. >> reporter: but these suspension cables that hold up the bridge haven't received a new coat in almost 75 years. and they're starting to show some wear and tear which is why workers will apply two coats of paint. >> it with keep the wires within from rusting. that's the goal to stay ahead of the rust. >> reporter: but mary curry says the project has been delayed the last few weeks by weather. that famous san francisco fog is making it tough to give the

golden gate a fresh coat. >> the moisture almost running like ain't off the cables. we haven't been able to apply the last couple of weeks because of the heavy fog. >> reporter: crews are scraping the cables and doing other prep work but will have to wait for the sky to clear. >> as the fog lifts, we'll continue to see more famous international orange paint. >> reporter: this project is important because those suspension cables can't be replaced they have to be maintained. this project is expected to take about four years. of course that's weather permitting. reporting live at the golden gate bridge, alex savidge, ktvu news. a tsunami all the way from

japan destroyed it. but today it's receiving work. what teams could be forced to do to crack down on violence. these stories and much more coming up in about 10 minutes. a hard breaking pictures tonight from iowa where a navy seal was laid to rest and what's so touching here is who was laying right next to his casket during his memorial service. john tumlinson was one of 20 americans who died when their helicopter was shutdown last month. friends and family said goodbye. 1,500 people packed the local high school church for the funeral. but it was john's dog hawk eye who captured everybody's heart. hawk eye walked in and laid downright next to the casket for the entire service as if keeping watch on his fallen owner. breaking news now in a story we've been covering for you for days now. in just the past few minutes here, we learned president obama has declared a state of emergency for the state of

north carolina as hurricane irene is churning toward the east coast. we actually just learned that hurricane irene also caused a near grounding in south florida. that's where seven people on a jetty in palm beach were knocked over and another man nearly drowned in heavy surf. today it slammed the bahamas with winds up to 110 miles per hour. the u.s. navy is following a century's old practice is putting as many ships as possible out to sea to ride out the storm. let's turn our thoughts now to bay area weather. some of us are already looking forward to the weekend and i hope our chief meteorologist bill martin is one of those people. >> one of the hottest, nicer

weekends. we're going to see temperatures into the 90s. along the coast too i think we'll see some clearing. not right now there's the fog. toward the marina glean, there's aquatic park. over toward the ferry building you see a little bit of clearing here and that's the end of market street. the fog will be in there tonight. there'll be plenty of it tomorrow morning like this morning. the difference tomorrow will be a rapid clear off, burn off. temperatures come up a few more degrees. a little bit of warming. as we head into the extended forecast being saturday, sunday and monday. temperatures on the increase certainly. as you go out into the avenuing tonight. we have the fog coming across there already. look for some spotty drizzle out in the avenues. out toward daly city. we're looking for the fog to be very similar in its footprint tomorrow morning to where it was this morning. so here's the fog footprint for the morning. just drop back one. but it burns back quickly. so we'll see a pretty strong push inland but then a rapid

burn off tomorrow morning. and then a really nice day. the forecast for tomorrow morning, there's a lot of low cloud and fog. as you get into your afternoon it warms up. temperatures easily into the low 90s for the inland bay valleys. a day tomorrow very similar to what we saw on tuesday. forecast high for cities where you live. 82 in fairfield, 88 in vallejo. 87 in martinez, 90 at livermore. temperatures on saturday, sunday will be slightly warmer than these. so we're getting into a nice little warm weather run. concerns will be seeing those 90s inland. the concern is going to be the fire danger increasing. they'll be fog at the coast nights and mornings right through the weekend but it's going to stick at the coast. the fog burned down to the water's edge. there's your friday forecast. mid-90s inland. so we might be talking about brush fires then because it's the heart of fire season so
