hurricane irene has left her mark on the caribbean and is now over the atlantic taking aim at a huge swath of the eastern united states. good evening everyone i'm frank somerville. >> i'm gasia mikaelian in for julie haener.

hurricane irene is heading toward the east coast. threatening north carolina to maine. the president has already declared an emergency for north carolina which means federal agencies can coordinate disaster relief efforts in that state. forecasters project irene will make landfall in the outer banks on saturday and move up the coast over the weekend. right now irene is leaving the bahamas. >> the entire eastern seaboard are going to see rain and flooding. >> reporter: strong hurricanes in new york are extremely rare but they do happen.

south carolina, georgia and florida should be spared. but the effects of the storm have been felt in south florida. irene churned up the ocean water causing eight injuries and one near drowning. a wind gust of 53 miles per hour was recorded by a meteorologist. and here is the very latest on irene. it is a powerful hurricane. it is now a category 3 hour 3 hurricane. it's still a category 3 as it moves into the carolinas. as we move into saturday, it's a category 2 and it's right over the carolinas. the outer banks north carolina.. here is the make or break with this hurricane, if it doesn't hit enough warm water, 9-degree

79-degree water, this could be a just a tropical storm and that's what people are hoping for. we have the computer model, it shows all the computer model runs, we'll see you back here. it could take days to determine the impact hurricane irene made on the bahamas. it caused flooding, knocked down trees and damaged roofs. the bahamas top emergency official says there are reports that two islands maintained substantial damage. they expect injuries but so far they've heard of no deaths.

at 10:30, how new york city is preparing for its first major tropical storm in years. bill is going to show us his computer models and how they project slightly different paths for irene. one of the main entrances into yosemite national park is closed tonight as an out of control grass fire burns just outside the park. the fire was reported just after one 1:00 this afternoon. so far it's burned about 1,000 acres. the highway patrol has closed a 15-mile stretch of the highway just outside the park entrance. we are told no homes are threatened tonight. tonight san francisco police hope that a new sketch will lead them to a man who beat a fan. eric rasmussen has more on what he discovered about the game this weekend.

>> reporter: tickets are going for as little as $1 to see the niners take on the houston texans. police hope this sketch will help them track down one of the most violent people who walked through these gates last weekend. as fists blew in the stands there was also plenty of witnesses in a bathroom at candle stick park. some of those witnesses helped them develop this sketch of a man who beat a fan unconscious. >> i am told it was a crowded restroom. it was during the game, hopefully when this picture goes out, someone will recognize him. >> reporter: police have also made plans to have more officers on hand. while the match up doesn't have the same reputation for trouble, some fans told us they are staying away. >> it gets to the point where

you wonder is it better to stay away. >> reporter: some fans told channel 2 they are giving their tickets away. but with a ban on tailgating after kick off, fans may feel safer. >> we'll have officers on foot in both the stadium and parking lot. but also we'll have officers on bicycle and motorcycles working the game. >> reporter: police couldn't tell us if they have an idea of who this man is. only that they're working a few leads while police said some of the people involved may have had gang tie, they said none of the incidents were actually gang related here. a southern california lawmaker wants tougher sentences for people convicted of violence at a sporting event. mike gatos says he plans on introducing a bill that creating crime enhancement for those type of crimes. they also want sports teams to

pay into a fund that will be used to offer rewards to find people who commit crimes during games. john sasaki shows us the idea to chip away at 12% unemployment relies on both tax credits and tax increases. >> reporter: at i fly indoor sky diving facility, all 24 workers make above minimum wage, about $10 and they have fun doing it. >> you get to see what people are like at their most primal. >> reporter: this man started here after months without a job. >> i had no intention of coming in. that was after i planned of nothing have the an income coming in. >> reporter: the governor's plan were to expand the reach

of that incentive to include companies of up to 50 workers. the governor also wants to raise that credit to $4,000. >> now that money is something we take advantage of. as well as increase productivity on the employees side. >> i don't believe a lot of people understood the tax incentivizing of moving jobs out and the tax disincentivizing of putting jobs in california. >> reporter: anything that creates more jobs is fine with this unemployed man we found at a bus stop. >> i have to be out doing something. i have to work, i have to be making a paycheck. >> reporter: what's unclear is whether the proposal will fly with republicans especially any idea that in effect raises taxes. in union city, i'm john sasaki. >> california lawmakers are escalating a battle with amazon.com over the state's new

interstate sales tax. in may, the governor signed a bill that will allow companies to collect taxes for the state. the modified bill needs a supermajority to pass in the legislature but if it did it would be immune to amazon's ballot referendum. tonight the names of those b.a.r.t. protesters arrested are no longer anonymous. tonight police released the names of the people arrested. nine are from the east bay, four are from out of state, one is under the age of 18. you can see the names of those arrested by going to our website ktvu.com. we've posted the information under the bay area news tab. about 150 young people came together in oakland tonight to silence the violence during a so called turf summit. new at 10:00, amber lee live at city hall and tells us how a convicted drug dealer

navy ships were sent out to sea before hurricane irene. those ships will return to norfolk once the storm passes. sporting events this weekend in east coast cities such as philadelphia and boston are being rescheduled as irene churns north at 14 miles per hour. folks have evacuated ahead of the storm. >> reporter: hi there frank, it was a gorgeous day on the beach. it was a very pretty night but there weren't a lot of people around to see it. hurricane irene is still about 500 miles away but she is very much -- her impact is very much felt here. she barrels toward the east coast. >> reporter: people in north carolina are gearing up to get out. north carolina officials are clearing out coastal areas ordering hundreds of thousands of tourists and residents to

leave. the local fire chief in atlantic beach north carolina says most seem to be listening. >> mostly we're getting word that people are planning on leaving the island. even the people that have normally planned to stay during hurricanes are choosing to leave. >> reporter: hurricane irene is forces many to take this storm seriously. >> we're going to head to greensboro and watch it from our home. >> reporter: cody goes on one last walk on the beach before evacuating with all the guests who were staying at her hotel. >> some of the guests were upset that they were having to leave because their vacation was short. but most of them very were understanding and they know we couldn't do anything about it and they all say they'll be back next year. >> reporter: donna hopes hurricane irene will not damage her hotel. saying these evacuations are already costings her money. >> i'm thinking in excess of $25,000. just in revenue. >> reporter: but business is

wound. a security guard is also recovering from a gunshot wound. tonight police are telling ktvu that they were looking at the daniels brothers in connection with a brinks truck robbery at hilltop mall in may. today the union lashed out at lumis saying the company's budget cutting tactics are dangerous. they used to work in crews of threes, now they work in twos. police say they have now identified a young man fatally shot after someone recognized his distinctiontive tattoos. police now say they belong to 18-year-old evan chapman of oakland. this tattoo on his left forearm said teresa. chapman also had a series of arms tattooed on his left arm. chapman was shot, at this point no arrests have been made. barry bonds returned to federal court in san francisco this afternoon to try to clear

his name. rita williams has been our lead reporter on this case. >> reporter: barry bonds' attorneys made their best pitch in court to throw out his felony conviction for government obstruction. it's a long shot. the instructions instruction -- they argued that the instructions the judge gave jurors were not clear or fair. and they argued that the explanation that bonds gave was indeed rambling but not obstruction. prosecutors disagreed saying bonds was purposely evasive. at the end the judge said she would issue a ruling later. >> it's unlikely she would throw it out and second guess the jury. the defense has some tough good

arguments, i think that's one of the reasons the judge wants to think about it and write it up. >> how was the game last night? >> it was nice. >> reporter: bonds answered questions about the winning giants game he attended last night. but not about what happened or didn't happen in court. >> going back to day one, he's always had confidence in the system. felt that the system would do justice. and nothing has changed. >> reporter: if the judge upholds his conviction then barry bonds will be sentenced here in about three months. then no doubt he'll appeal. in san francisco, rita williams, ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco's crowded mayoral race is leading to some unusual alliances. when interim mayor ed lee entered the race 17 days ago he may have become the front runner. now some of the 15 other candidates are considering sharing strategies in an anyone but ed campaign. the idea is to utilize the city's new ranked choice sroáeting system and block major lee from getting second

and third place votes -- ranked choice voting system and block mayor lee from getting second and third place votes. candidate chu says the idea of forming alliances makes sense for him and avalos agrees. a similar strategy did work in oakland last year for jean quan when she won the lace despite pera tta being the front runner. nasdaq was off by 48. traders are awaiting a speech tomorrow by ben bernanke. b of a stock shot up after buffet agreed to invest $5 million in that company. b of a has been struggling as of late. buffet's investment is seen as

a bar-b-que is to blame for a fire. the fire started just after 7:00 near golf club road. the propane tank on the bar-b- que helped fuel the flames so did grease on the grill. thousands of people are back in their homes tonight after a propane fire burned itself out. the fire started tuesday forcing the evacuation of residents from almost 5,000 homes in lincoln. crews were worried a building

of heat could cause the tanker to explode producing a massive fire ball. the tankers were surrounded by train cars. residents now say they're relieved. >> we never thought something like this would happen. so yeah, there is some danger but, you know, we'll take it as it comes. >> reporter: federal and state investigators are trying to pinpoint the cause of the fire. an employee from the company that operating the tanker was burned in the fire. in libya, colonel gadhafi called on his loyalists to keep fighting the rebels who he called rats. those rebels say they came very close to catching gadhafi. >> reporter: despite rebel claims of having taken the libyan capitol of tripoli, pockets of fighting continued. rebels claim they missed by just hours to capture gadhafi at a safe house. >> i think the gadhafi is still in tripoli, he won't leave

tripoli until we get him or kill him. he's a crazy guy. >> reporter: even as rebels searched under ground bunker, gadhafi released this message. >> do not leave tripoli, fight them, destroy them. >> i think now he realizes he doesn't have many friends anymore. >> until he's actually found i'm not holding my breath. but what's exciting about the current situation of course that's really no longer relevant vent in the in the sense that he's no longer the dictator. >> reporter: a rebel commander said today he believes gadhafi is near by. one unanswered question is what to do with gadhafi once he's found. how he is treated could create a lasting impression of the new government. >> it's important to accomplish a precedent of a fair judicial process because it will say a

they are stocking up on the east coast. long island residents today make a run on grocery and hardware stores. and michael bloomburg says that city is now ready to evacuate.

he expects to decide whether to do that early saturday. chief meteorologist bill martin has been tracking this storm and you have a computer model people may not have seen yet. >> this is a series of model outputs. you see all the various model runs. you can see it just kissing the carolinas here in the outer banks. this next section is the one everyone is worried about. you have a lot of action going right offshore in new york. it's sort of just offshore but there's a few different model outputts as a category 1 or less. definitely a problem for the east coast. we'll keep you updated on this story and we'll see you back here in just a little bit with your local weather. the threat of hurricane irene has prompted the cancellation of the martin luther king memorial in washington, d.c. about a quarter of a million people were expected to attends the dedication on the national mall including president obama.

instead the ceremony will be held in september or october. sunday is the 48th anniversary of dr. king's i have a dream speech. also in the capital we're getting a better idea of how badly the washington monument was damaged in tuesday's earthquake. cracks and broken pieces of mortar were found that fell during the quake. the monument is closed indefinitely. new at 10:00 tonight, a holiday crack down on drunk driving -- even though labor day is weeks away. police have one message, don't even think about drinking and driving. >> reporter: the holiday is still over a week away, but police are already out in the area cracking down on drunk

drivers. i this is part of what is called the national drive sober or get pulled over campaign. it began last week and runs through september 5th. an 18 day campaign. this may seem like the crack down is beginning early but police say they are just trying to get the message out in hopes it will save lives. >> we're conducting a dui campaign making sure everybody gets home safely. >> for a combination of reasons including staffing as well as trying to meet that educational function we started a little earlier than we would normally start. >> reporter: police say they will not be impounding cars of drivers who were allegedly intoxicated but will allow sober family and friends to take the vehicles while the driver goes to jail. in 2009, nearly 11,000 people died nationwide in drunk

people in the coastal community of pescadero are under orders to boil their water for a third consecutive night. restaurant kitchens were idle today. the town's water pumps broke saturday night. it's now been fixed. tonight a test came back saying the water was clean, but a second test needs to confirm that it is safe to drink. >> we were super busy. before we opened we had a line of people waiting to get the

bread and danishing. >> reporter: and now? >> nobody. in news of the world tonight, palestinian militants are calling for a truce. the attacks and counter attacks all began last week when militants killed eight israelis on a bus. the truce is expected to go into effect tomorrow morning. in mexico, at least 53 people were killed in an arson attack on a casino in the city of monterrey. officials suspect drug cartels are responsible. and in australia, some truly incredible video. this is security camera video of a teenager actually playing chicken watch this with a high speed train. he runs right in front of that train and jumps on to the station platform and as you see here, the train just misses ripping off his leg.

authorities hope this video will act as a deterrent to others who might be considering giving something try. the cause of death of a santa rosa girl remains a mystery. takamia died after drinking vodka at a party. but the coroner was not satisfied with the tests, so he sent for a new test. it's expected to take another two to three weeks. investigators are looking for a truck that looks like this one. it is a white ford f150 a four door super crew model with a gold stripe running along the bottom. a $12,500 reward is being

pictures it remains out of control at this hour. so far no homes are threatened. caltrans crews demolished a bay area skate park calling the park a liability. the state plans to park another car built for boarders with the support of a u.s. senator. >> reporter: bulldoze trucks, sweepers, all of them in place at 8:00 in the morning. >> it's a nightmare to me, they came through with the bulldozers and everything and got rid of it. >> reporter: rob allens says they will next demolish the skateboard over the elevated part of i80. caltrans shut down border town

saying skateboarders were trespassing into state the territory. >> it was built illegally. >> reporter: caltrans says it was left with no other option but to demolish the skate parks. >> if somebody was injured there was a liability we would have to pay. >> reporter: and for skaters, they say it is a dark day for them. >> it just shows you that in america we have to figure out what we're going to do to help the kids. >> reporter: we put a call to the city to ask why they decided not to renew the lease with the state. that second skate park border town said to be demolishedded ed in the coming weeks. the epa fined the operator of the largest waste dump in

inland valleys. it was a mild evening if you were out and about this evening. temperatures for the most part in the 60s and low 70s. tomorrow is a day just like today. you will see the same amount of fog you will see a rapid burn off. the difference will be a few degrees warmer, you will see upper 80s and low 90s. the warming trend starts tomorrow. and it goes right through saturday, sunday and into monday. it's not a heat wave but we're going to see mid-90-degree read readings as we go into the bay area weekend. there's your fog footprint about 7:00 a.m. rapid burn back, that's going get you plenty of sunshine. you're going see those reds coming outs of the valley. saturday, sunday and monday you're going to see more red coming at us. we're going to have rapid burn off tomorrow. coastal low clouds and fog in the morning. then you get into some nice nice warm weather. right at the coast because you
