begins to retreat. we are looking at mostly sunny skies for today and in time for the week our temperatures will warm. in fact, it will be hot in some cases. today 2-4 degrees warmer than yesterday. slightly warmer in many areas in our valley locations will be heating up. take a look at this into the afternoon. along the coastline we have the green. we have the 60s with us. for the most part a few low 70s out there. santa cruz expected to hit 72 this afternoon. wide spread 70s the yellows. we have oranges for our inland areas. 80s expected in areas around santa rosa and napa. you go farther inland that is where you see the red. concord expected to get close to 90 degrees for the afternoon. these temperatures continuing to sore. saturday looks to be the warmest day. if you have beach plans you are in luck. we'll take a look at what you can expect for the weekend. hi sal.

hello rosemary. happy friday to everyone watching. let's take a look at traffic on highway 4. it looks pretty good. 680 traffic looks good. northbound 880 off to a nice start. there is road work as you get closer to downtown oakland. a couple lanes shut down there. you can see on 80 westbound there is a whole bunch of activity on the side of the road on 80. some of the road work there near golden gate fields coming out. they have a couple lanes closed but the traffic is so light it's not causing a huge traffic jam. you can tell that you will be pinched down to two lanes. we'll run that down and have all the rest of the commute coming up. at 4:31 let's go back to pam cook. the investigation is under way into a bizarre and tragic hit and run accident in redwood city. two cars hit and killed a man last night.

kraig debro tells us the victim wanted to be hit. >> reporter: good morning, pam. typically we don't cover suicides on our broadcast but this one turned out to be a felony here. if you take a look on the street, you can see the orange markings still out there. sprayed as part of the police investigation. they received several 911 calls last night around 9:00 when they arrived there, there was a man lying in the roadway. he was pronounced dead at the scene. after interviewing several people police decided this was a suicide. he laid down in the road and was hit by two vehicles. vehicles did not stop. that is why this is not just a suicide but a felony hit and run. >> first he was hit by two cars. vehicle descriptions we have is a small silver sedan and smaller suv. >> reporter: police closed the road for two hours while the on scene investigation was taking

place. police are still trying to identify the suicide victim. he's a hispanic man in his 30s. there has been video tape taken from a shop around here not of the actual accident but one of the cars speeding away. we will try to get more information on that for morning news. reporting live in redwood city kraig debro. a state of emergency is in effect for the eastern coast of north carolina as hurricane irene approaches. i want to take you live there this morning. certainly looking at the coast it doesn't show a lot there but the storm is huge as it heads that way. it has devastated puerto rico and the bahamas and irene has its eye on the u.s. mainland. supposed to hit north carolina sometime between tonight and tomorrow morning. now this is atlantic beach north carolina. just two hours ago the national weather service downgraded irene if a category two storm but still report 6-9 feet waves

hitting north carolina beaches. now people are boarding up billings and evacuating many of the coastal cities up and down the east coast. emergency rescue crews are also preparing to deal with the hurricane's after math. >> two person team a structural collapse with hurricanes where wednesday not build down. we have our swift water rescue team that goes into flooded areas. they go in and rescue people out of homes that are trapped. >> forecasters say the wind speeds for irene are still at 115 miles an hour but could gather strength as it hits the warm atlantic water. state of emergency has been declared for new jersey with mandatory evacuations. this is the biggest evacuation in that state's history. all 11 casinos in atlantic city are bracing for a shut down. that will be the first that has

sentencing day in the chauncey bailey murder case. the two men convicted in the killing of the oakland journalist will go before a judge for formal sentencing. yusuf bey and antwon mackey will receive a life sentence without the possibility parole. they ordered bill lie's killing after they learned he was writing a story about his business. more evacuations at yosemite national park as a wild fire burns out of control. the fire began just before 1:00 yesterday afternoon along highway 140. it started when a propane tank exploded igniting nearby brush. take a look at pictures there. right now a 15-mile stretch of highway 140 just outside the park entrance remains closed.

fire crews say so far no injuries. san francisco police will have increased security at tomorrow evening's 49er game. houston texan game in the response to last weekend's fan violence at candle stick park. police also hope a sketch will lead them to a man that beat up a fan inside candle stick park bathroom during last weekends 49er-raiders game. they describe him as a heavy sell pacific islander. he's six feet tall weighing up to 250 pounds. >> i'm told it was a crowded restroom. transfers during the -- it was during the game. >> the victim of the bathroom beating is a 26-year-old man from san rafael who is grabbed by the neck and slammed into a wall. he was knocked unconscious and is in the hospital. two other fans were shot and wounded in the candle stick

park parking lot that same night. a southern california lawmaker says he plans to introduce a bill for tougher sentences for people convicted of violence at sporting events. democrat from burbank also wants professional sports teams to pay into a fund that would be used to offer rewards to find people that commit crimes at games. san francisco police have released information -- 35 people were arrested. 16 of them are from san francisco. nine are from the east bay. four are from out of state. one of the protestors arrested is under the age of 18. you can see the list of names by those arrested by going to the bay area tab of our website. barry bonds was back in a federal courtroom in san

francisco yesterday. his defense team was there as well to urge federal judge to overturn his felony conviction for obstruction of justice. the judge says he will issue a written ruling in the near future. >> it's unlikely she would throw it out and second guess the jury. i think the surprise would be if she threw it out. >> now last april a jury found bonds guilty of obstruction of justice stemming from his grand jury testimony. the same jury deadlocked on three perjury charges. prosecutors have not said if they will seek a retrial on those three coups. labor day weekend is still a week away. police are out in force cracking down on drunk drivers. burlington police were checking drivers last night. that crack down is part of the national drive sober or get pulled over campaign. it runs through september 5th. police say they are trying to get the message out in hopes to save lives. >> the idea is to be very high

profile. so for a combination of reasons including staffing as well as trying to meet that educational function, we started a little earlier than we would normally start. >> several other bay area counties including alameda and sonoma counties are running dui check points through the holiday weekend. so far more people have been arrested this year that last. 77 arrests were made between august 19th and august 24th. 65 people were arrested during that same time last year. now police say they saw a spike in arrests on saturday following the 49er-raider game at candle stick park. for the fourth day in a row people are under orders to boil their water. restaurants remain closed as the county mandated their closure until tests confirmed the water was safe. it has now been fixed but more tests are needed to determine the water is free of bacteria.

right now it is 4:40. i want to check back in with sal for a look at traffic. sal. >> good morning. traffic is moving along pretty well around the bay area. but there is road work on the east shore freeway. one lane is closed there. you can see the flashing lights at the top of your screen. traffic is getting by it's not a huge deal there heading out to the mccarthur maze. also this mornings commute looks okay on the bay bridge. and this mornings commute in san jose is off to a nice start. so far any way. northbound 280 is off to a nice start as i just said. i'm repeating myself. traffic is nice to the west valley. 101 looks good as well. it's okay it's friday. low clouds fog out there once again and our winds are generally light. variable coming in south

plaster county that caused the evacuation of nearly 5,000 homes. the fire started on tuesday. the tanker was surrounded by trucks and other rail cars containing 170,000 gallons of propane. crews were worried a buildup of heat would cause the tanker to blow. one person was injured in that fire. police say the officer and his partner were stopping pedestrians to question them about a string of car break ins when they were fired upon. one of the officers was shot multiple times. more than 100 officers sealed off dozens of blocks in the area to search for two men. police say they have recovered the gun used in the shooting but have not found the men. police in richmond and santa rosa think two brothers involved in the attempted robbery of an armored car may be connected to other armed

truck robberies. daniel was killed in a police shootout. freddy daniel is hospitalized with a gunshot wound. they have also arrested william fuller. police resource officers and loomis security guard are recovering from gunshot wounds. police in washington state have gathered new evidence from the home of a man who's wife has been missing for nearly two years. detectives removed two computers from the home. they would not say what they were looking for on the computers. powell's wife susan has been missing since december of 2009 when the couple was living in utah with their two young sons. >> there is a certain degree of gratification knowing the police are still working actively. that they still have someone they are focusing on. >> josh powell has been named a

person of interest in his wife's disappearance but has not been charged or detained. he has refused to answer questions about a midnight camping trip that he took with their two sons. jared loughner will make another attempt today to stop the fourth medication of their client. a federal judge rejected the decision in june. they later allowed it to resume after prison officials determined that loughner's outbursts posed a danger. mental health experts are giving jared loughner in an effort to make him fit to stand trial. he has pled not guilty to the january shooting that killed six people and wounded 16 others including congresswoman gabrielle giffords.

in 200815-year-old larry king was shot and killed at his junior high school in oxnord. brandon is accused of first degree murder and a hate crime in that killing. he was 14 at the time of the shooting. if convicted he faces more than 50 years in prison. the recent string of violence in oakland has community members coming together to call for peace. 150 people showed up for a church summit last night to talk about ways to stop the violence in the city. former east oakland drug dealer darrell reed was a speaker at the event. reed called from his jail cell to deliver his message of peace. he's serving his 23rd year of a 35-year sentence. reed's 22-year-old son also had a message for young people. >> really take your decision and choices and really understand that this could every single one of them could shape the rest of your life. >> the organizer of the church

slamly wineries -- valley wineries. now take a look. two world class restaurants and several tasting rooms. >> it's nice to have napa actually mean something in napa valley. >> visitors say they like the atmosphere, good weather, and ease of getting around. the businesses are going out of their way to show tourists don't need to be at the winery to get the feel of napa. they hope the redevelopment of downtown will strengthen the local economy making even more upgrades possible. today volunteers will build a new playground in south san francisco. the new facility is going up at orange memorial park. the project is part of the let's play effort which is backed by the dr. pepper snap l group. volunteers listen to this will start working at 8:30 this morning. they expect to be done in time for ribbon counting at 3:00 this afternoon. tvs and lightbulbs blown
