today no one on the beach expect for a few surfers that weren't supposed to be there. yesterday, vacationers everywhere. today it's a ghost town. the skies were grayer, the waves were rougher and north carolina's coastal communities braced themselves friday for the arrival of irene. >> we are prepared for the worse and we continue to pray for the best. i urge every citizen along the coastal planes to evacuate. after a north carolina land fall the storm will make its way up the east coast forcing preparations as far north as new england. officials are warning residents in the storm's path to not let friday's weather fool them. >> you have to get out. the weather is good today. it's sunny, it is time to move. >> reporter: most have headed the warning to get ready. there were long gas lines as people prepared to leave the

coast. elsewhere in maryland, boats were moving to safer waters and sandbags were distributed. majors outlined emergency plans for their cities. philadelphia and new york will shut down their high speed rail before the storm. >> we are bringing all federal resources to bare and deploying them properly. >> president obama of course not the only one cutting his vacation short. that's pretty much been the name of the game here for about every tourist in ocean city maryland. officials are warning if residents don't get out now they won't be able to do it tomorrow. chris welch. >> that's what's happening on the ground. let's take you up high now and show you some of the pictures that were taken of irene.

the view we're about to show you is from 250 miles above the earth. it shows the incredible size of hurricane irene which was 600 miles wide. mark tamayo is tracking irene. and we're getting more information on where irene is headed. >> a little bit more of a shift to the northeast. right now moveing to the north- northeast. already those heavy rain bands pushing on shore. latest information on the satellite with hurricane irene that makes it a category 3. we'll take this into the overnight hours. this is for the overnight hours, you can see what happens as you head into saturday

morning. this is 1: 11:00 our time. winds at 110 miles per hour. this hurricane will weaken a bit. but still producing significant rainfall and a storm surge. there's the track for late saturday approaching new england as we head into the rest of the weekend for the second half of the weekend. as far as the potential impact with this. first we'll talk about the storm surge. that's all the area shaded in red. that is the hurricane warning. for the jersey shore that backs down a little bit three to 6 feet. rainfall about six to eight inches. well hurricane irene is causing lots of trouble, everyone for those who are not

in its path -- even for those who are not in their path. >> reporter: baltimore residents happy to be coming here for a vacation and bay area residents happy to be coming home especially with what's baring down on the east shore. thousands of flights to and from the east coast and to the east coast have been cancelled affecting flights here and at other bay area airports. there's three flights to washington, new york and boston will head out as scheduled tonight but are cancelled saturday and sunday. a man from baltimore, a woman from the east bay and a man headed to new york all said the hurricane is on their mind. >> actual little i'm here for a wedding. it just so happens that i'm out of town for the hurricane. i love it like that. >> everybody was talking about getting out. there was golf tournaments and a lot of stuff going on. everybody is passing on that, so i came home a day early. >> i've lived in the east coast

for a long time. we can handle this. we've experienced a lot of things. rain and water are not going to kill us. >> reporter: no matter where you're flying you should check your the airline's website and see how your flight will be affected by hurricane irene. live at oakland airport, i'm john sasaki. even though the full force of hurricane irene hasn't hit the bay area, many people are already starting to mobilize. allie rasmuss has the story. >> reporter: right now we're at moffet field where fema has a 1,000 square foot care house it's beyond that giant -- foot warehouse it's beyond that giant hanger you're seeing.

fema could get a call to start sending some of that stuff over. fema is just one of bay area agencies already on stand by or on their way to help. the paper work will tell barbara wood where she'll be. >> in new york, i'm flying into j.f.k. >> she's one of seven volunteers briefed on her assignments at the chapter in san jose. all of them are on their way to the east coast before hurricane irene hits. >> it is a large area affecting many states with very large populations. and we don't know until it hits what damage it will do. >> i'm going to new york to do disaster assessment and so say if the hurricane hits long island they will send me out there to document how much damage has been done. >> reporter: the assignment is a personal one for wood. >> i have a daughter who lives in new york. i have been telling her that she needs to be prepared for this hurricane. >> reporter: other agencies are also helping to prepare.

the coast guard is deploying two public affairs specialist from alameda to new york. and out of sacramento, a c130 aircraft is on stand by waiting to deploy up to 10 people to help with everything from search and rescue to transporting supplies. >> coming up at 6:00, we will hear from fema representatives they've already sent to the east coast. in kentucky two dozens marine corp. planes began arriving yesterday at new river north carolina. they'll be housed temporarily at louisville airport where they'll wait out the storm. ktvu health and science editor john fowler will show us what happened the last time a hurricane this big came roaring up the east coast. plus how the waters off of california are being affected by the storm on the east. it's all about 5:45. also our coverage will continue not only through our newscast but also on our website.

the fake messages that they kept getting. dozens of san francisco court workers had a message today for the judicial council. >> out of order. >> budget cuts. >> out of order. >> reporter: the workers rallied in the city this afternoon as the council held its monthly meeting. that i have say they're demonstrate -- they say they're demonstrating against the council's decision to make cuts to the san francisco court. that means lay offs of 40% of its staff. and the shutdown of 25 courtrooms. protesters say the changes will harm the court system. >> it really does scare us to see what's going to happen in the future. divorces will take three years, not to mention the families who just are going to lose their jobs and will be affected greatly by the impact of these budget cuts. >> reporter: the demonstrators argue the council should spend its money on the workers rather than move court buildings an expensive project. ben bernanke offered no new steps to boost the economy. he also hinted that congress

needs to take some action. bernanke spoke to economists at the central bankers conference. said that the economic recovery is far more robust than thought. he also pushed for congress to come up with a plan to cut the nation's deficit and stimulate economic growth. bernanke's comments helped boost stocks to some modest gains today. trading volume was wide, probably because traders were leaving town to get out ahead of hurricane irene. the nasdaq was up 60 points. you can't miss it, driving down i80, new conduction that's bringing new hope. ktvu consumer editor tom vacar there to tell us why bargain hunters and house hunters may soon find a deal. >> reporter: i have to tell you, i have not seen this much concentrated construction in

one place since the boom before the bust. construction is fully under way on this 120 store factory outlet mall in livermore. almost a thousand construction projects are going on. >> the center means over 2,000 permanent jobs. >> reporter: the carpenters union protest that it is all done with labor that can't shop here. >> we don't have anything right now that is close by. no target which is coming around here. >> reporter: it's not just factory outlets and other retailers, it's housing as well. three developers will have another thousand workers building hundreds of new homes. >> a project of that size in california is enormous at this time particularly in the state of our industry and probably across the country as well. >> reporter: the livermore valley seems to be solidly coming out of recession.

through the fog. neither of men was injured but they will have to wait until high tide before their boat can be floated off the rocks. we are near yosemite on what's being dubbed the motor fire and a look at those hailed behind me shows one reason why it's such a challenging fire to fight. clouds clear back to near the coastline today. coming up i'll show you where the fog will be first thing tomorrow morning and i'll highlight the warmest day of the weekends. some over-the-top comfort couldn't hurt. -- warmest day of the weekend. you're feeling sleepy already? nighty-night. the power is back on tonight. a tree limb came down last night causing a power surge that knocked down electricity to hundreds of customers. crews have been literally going door to door doing safety checks and inspecting meters for damage. coming up at 6:00, the problems some of these people are still facing tonight from that power surge. about two dozen people were hurt today when an amtrak train that originated here in the bay area hit a farm vehicle in nebraska. the collision derailed the effort this morning. the train was carrying 175 passengers to chicago. witnesses say around 8:00 a.m. central time it hit a construction crate. two loco motives tipped on their side and three of the passenger cars left the tracks. >> as of right now it's just a

matter of cleaning up any -- any hazardous materials that might be involved. then calling in professional services to put any cars back on the track that can move. this train left emeryville on wednesday. amtrak arranged for buses to get passengers back on the road. an unusual hit and run investigation is under way. police say a man was hit and killed just after 9:00 a.m. as he was lying on the traffic lanes of el camino real. he was hit by a small black suv and was dragged 50 feet. neither car stopped and the drivers may face charges when found. >> although it appears it was

unintentional, he layed down on the street. you still have to stop. >> the man had said he wanted to kill himself before he laid down on the street. >> reporter: first i should explain why we're on the satellite phone here. there's really no cell service here to speak of. we just received an update a short time ago from the forest service. this fire is now up to 25,000 acres. there it is. the smoke just this afternoon has really picked up in this location. and if you're familiar with yosemite, you know our current location, we're in the parking lot right now of the cedar lodge at el portal. 300 guests were evacuated because of the fire. they were evacuated yesterday because the fire was burning just so closely. right now the fire is burning on both sides of this canyon, there's no containment. when it was first reported at noon, the fire was 40 acres.

by midnight it was 1,000. this morning the fast moving motor fire was at 2,000 acres. >> it's been dubbed the motor fire because it was an ruff propane tank that exploded and caught the near by vegetation on fire. >> reporter: a dozen aircraft are fighting this fire, four planes and eight helicopters, but the hard work is being done by 600 firefighters. hiking up steep, rocky land in the sierra and stanislaus area. >> the weather is not the problem here, it's the terrain. >> reporter: some of the 300 evacuated cedar lodge guests were escorted back to the lodge today to pick up their property. 15 other scattered homes in the area were also evacuated. >> there are 70 structures that are actually in danger as well as 35 out buildings. >> that was ken pritchett reporting from yosemite. right now we want to go over to chief meteorologist bill martin. is the weather hurting or helping the firefighters tonight? >> we have warm temperatures

from the 80s to mid-90s. but as the spokesperson said the terrain is the biggest challenge. if you've been in that area, you can see the steep drop offs there. that is the biggest obstacle for fire crews. there's about a 30% chance of a shower. that's good news but the bad news a thunderstorms. with that that could trigger new flames. but right now we do have at least partly cloudy skies in the sierra right around yosemite. back here in the bay area. we have the fog right near the immediate coastline showed up nicely here as you can point out from point rays, san francisco, and pacifica. clearing skies and temperatures have warmed up nicely. forecast the story for tonight is this. we do have patchy fog targeting the coast in the bay. tomorrow, patchy clouds, next week we do bring in a cooling trend especially to a tuesday and into wednesday. here we go with the overnight lows, area fog. most areas starting out saturday morning in the low to

injured. but tonight we're learning that police also faced another problem that made their job even more difficult. david stevenson is live at candle stick and tells us about the dozens of text messages that police received during the game, david. >> reporter: frank here at the stadium, there's preparations going on for tomorrow's game. even though questions still remain about reports on stands last saturday. even as police and security officers tried to stop the violence at saturday's 49ers- raiders game. officers got a lot of fake text messages calling for help. the president of stadium operations tells the bay citizen that nearly 40% of the bad fan text messages were false alarms or pranks. the 49ers did not make anyone available today to comment on that report. but nfl chief of security jeff miller today told us phony alerts aren't uncommon. >> obviously saturday was a bit

reporting live from candle stick park, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. in a story we first reported at noon, two systems suspects that crashed their car have now been arrested. a motorcycle police officer chased the suspects down red hill road before they crashed into several cars on second street in san rafael. the officer prevented the men from running away by holding them at gunpoint until other police officers arrived. neither the burglary suspects nor anyone in the other cars were injured. it's been four years since oak lands journalist chauncey bailey was killed. today the - - oakland journalist chauncey bailey was killed. and today the two suspects were in court.

high tide. meteorologist john monteverde points to the warmest sea temperatures warmer than normal. in 1944 new jersey was slammed by a hurricane also spun north by an extra warm atlantic. it's not just the atlantic but curiously the temperatures of pacific are also a factor. and a la nina could create favorable hurricane conditions. irene may be just the first in the series of up to 10 hurricanes this year. possibly five major ones category 3 or higher. >> i would not try to sit around and weather the storm

because this one looks pretty bad. >> reporter: damages are a billion dollars in the caribbean and could top another 2 billion in new york city alone. reporting live, john fowler ktvu channel 2 news. well speaking of new york city, mayor michael bloomburg has ordered the evacuation of 200,000 people living in low lying areas there. the reason is simple, the storm surge from hurricane irene may hit at high tide tomorrow. if that storm does hit new york dead on or a glancing blow it could cause the worse flooding to hit the new york area in 70 years. irene is also taking aim at sporting events in the east coast. baseball, tennis, even the nfl all affected by this monster storm. the a's will play a double header tomorrow so no game on sunday. the mets cancelled games. the new york giants moved their football game up by three hours

have clouds and fog on the bay area shoreline. near san francisco's ocean beach. and that will expand over the next few hours. as far as our time lapse looking out toward the bay. you can see evidence of that fog pushing back into the region. notice that the marine layer, with that the warm air is compressing that and as a result you will feel that warm air as we head into the weekend. san jose in the upper 70s at 79 degrees. you can see some interesting developments with showers and thunderstorms approaching southern and central california. all rotating around an area of high pressure that will be building in over the weekend. now we will pick up a few high clouds. we have introduced the possibility of an isolated thunderstorms just to our south down closer to salinas, holster and king city. we will pick up a few high clouds into saturday. after some patchy morning fog. sunday clearing skies that will be the warmest day. that means the hottest location

inland at least approaching the mid-90s. morning showing you the clouds out there pushing locally into the bay at 6:00 and 7:00. possibly drizzle once again. coast side and then as you can see pulling back to near the shoreline revealing partly cloudy skies for the beaches and more sunshine around the bay. and warmer temperatures inland. 7:00 tomorrow morning, 55 to 60 degrees by 12:00. still patchy coastal fog. lower 60s from stinson beach to lower 90s around fairfield. oakland mid-70s. skies becoming mostly sunny but that fog could be a little patchy. you will notice temperatures do spike as we head into sunday. that means the warmest locations could be around 95, 96 degrees. then we will bring in cooler cooling for monday and the cooling trend continues for tuesday and wednesday.

just $29 a month for 6 months. b.a.r.t. riders who talk or text on a cell phone would be breaking the law in california under a bill that's now in the governors desk. that bill would extend the state's hands free law to riders. fines would go up for drivers on a cell phone without a hands free device if governor brown signs the bill. the fine for first time offenders will increase from 20 to $50. court fees would increase from $180 to $300. the new owner of an old casino in lake tahoe is trying to crack a mystery.

work crews found an old safe sealed inside the wall of that building. >> i can't go any where without being stopped and being asked what was in that safe. it's like an old pirate's chest. >> reporter: the new owner mike law estimated the safe has been there for more than four decade. three lock smiths have tried and failed to open it. the mystery deepness. moth thinks the safe could contain clues to an unsolved murder. the safe and the murder have drawn plenty of attention and someone even tried to break into the building. >> every opportunist in the country is trying to get at this. >> reporter: before the safe was unsealed someone tried to cut their way but never made it through the interior wall. the owner was offered money for the safe but he's refused.
