storm tracker 2. you get an idea with all those reds and yellows, that is the expected landfall. wind right now 100 miles per hour. this is a category 2 storm moving to the north-northeast at 18. 100miles from cape look out. that's where that red dot is. the forecast track does take this into the overnight hours. there's the category 2, early saturday morning just approaching the north carolina coastline. saturday morning 11:00 our time, winds of 75 miles per hour. still moving to the north and weakening as a category 1 but still on that track approaching new york city as we head into sunday borderline category 1 storm. local crews are mobilizing, ktvu's allie rasmuss is live. >> reporter: we are at moffetf field where fema has a 100,000

square foot lot. inside that warehouse has food, water and other supplies depending on what happens with this hurricane. fema's bay area office may be called to send some of those supplies over. they are one of many bay area agencies pitching in to help. crews meet at the san francisco chapter. >> we got the call and it surprised me that we are going to try to get there before it hits. >> i have my gps in here. >> reporter: by tomorrow morning, they'll be in north carolina waiting for hurricane irene to hit. >> food is going to be difficult to get. places are going to shutdown. they're not going to be operating. they don't have power, so you can't use credit card in different places. gasoline will be in shortage. >> reporter: bay area red cross chappers are sending seven volunteers to the east bay. >> we're going to need a lot of

feeding and shelter. >> reporter: out of sacramento a c130 coast guard aircraft is on stand by ready to deploy up to 10 people to assist with search and rescue to supplies. they've already sent an i incident management team to new hampshire and more staff is under way. >> we've been asked for additional staff to go out to support our colleagues in new york. so we'll be getting people on a plane tomorrow. >> reporter: and clark says there are 15 people on that incident management team already in new hampshire. he says their role is to help fema's regional office an new hampshire's state emergency office. allie rasmuss, ktvu news. dozens of flights to and from new york are cancelled this evening. virgin america and united have

both cancelled eight flights so far tomorrow out of sfo. people who made it into oakland this afternoon say they feel lucky. >> everybody is talking about getting out. there was golf tournaments, a lot of things going on and everybody is going to pass on all of that and just try to get home. i came home a day early. >> actually i'm here for a wedding. it just happens that i'm out of town for a hurricane, i love it like that. >> reporter: if you're traveling for the weekend call ahead to see how your flight is affected. an evacuation is underway tonight covering maryland, new york, new jersey and north carolina. further north of new jersey,

traffic was at a near standstill as folks left the jersey shore and atlantic city headed for higher ground. new york city is under its first hurricane warning in 30 years. authorities are telling people in low lying areas of the city to move to higher ground by 5:00 p.m. tomorrow. today crews were stacking sandbags at a bus depot on manhattan west side. transit will shut down tomorrow afternoon. we have continuing coverage on our website ktvu.com. you will find a live satellite imagine of the hurricane and its path. a major highway is cut off to to yosemite because of a growing fire. >> i can tell you that this fire is really moving fast. the forest service updated the number of acres burned late this afternoon.

just before our 5:00 newscast. a 2,500 acres. let's take a look at some of that smoke from that fire. at 5:00 there was much more smoke. this afternoon there was a large cloud of smoke coming up from the hills you will see here behind me. this is right behind madera canyon. it has layed down a bit from our vantage point. the fire has already been dubbed a motor fire because it is thought to have started by a

-- by this afternoon it was 2,500 acres and zero percent contained. >> we have so many firefighters just based on the size, the terrain, the weather. >> reporter: residents of 15 homes have been evacuated and 300 guests forced to flee the cedar lodge. where firefighters focused much of their official efforts on structural protection. the motor fire is burning very close to highway 140, it is shut down leading to and from yosemite. >> it is lots to do to concerns about public safety, there's falling trees and rock, it's just not safe for travel. >> reporter: what you can appreciate from the video is the temperature here. it is in the lower 90s here and it feels very warm. there has been some gusty winds late this afternoon. the forest service says the weather is not rarely the primary factor here it is the terrain. in addition to those 600 fire fighters they have, they plan to call in about 1,100 more.

ken pritchett, ktvu news. the size of that fire in yosemite there are two other active fires. one is the lion fire. the other is the ken fire in the san bernardino county area. and two trains derailed near kansas and colorado. the train had left emeryville heading for chicago. two loco motives and the first two passenger cars left the tracks. all of the injuries are said to be nonlife threatening. palo alto police are investigating a series of nighttime commercial burglaries. we have a picture to share with you taken of one of the burglaries. the series of burglaries dates back to 2009. the most recent one was wednesday at ramonas pizza.

where he took cash and a bike. a tree branch that fell caused a power surge in thousands of east palo alto homes and businesses. rita williams is there now and tells why crews had to go door to door before turning the power on. >> reporter: what is so amazing is what little took to cause this power outage. if you look behind me at this cypress tree it was just a 12- foot branch off the tree that snapped about 10:00 last night. it's now being chipped up behind me. but when it fell on power lines it left 232 homes and business in east palo alto in the dark. this weird strange rare circumstance where it hit just right. sent a voltage surge throughout this area. >> we just had a pop sign. everything that we had like

computer and the fridge and the tv. >> reporter: some folks said lightbulbs popped when almost three times the voltage went through the lines. atm and food stamp machines were not working. >> we had to tell the customer to go to the bank and get the cash. >> reporter: the owners say it is store was only open about half an hour this morning before power was restored just after 10:00 a.m. still, it cost him. >> looking at maybe 100 to $200. maybe in half an hour. >> most of the customers came back but, i hope it doesn't happen again. >> reporter: pg & e workers checked meters at each house or store before shutting the power back off. >> we're going to shut it back off. >> reporter: they gave customers claim forms explaining that if the company is responsible for the outage it will pay for lost business or damage to appliances or for my spoiled food.

most folks we talked with were not too upset. >> the most important thing, we're still breathing. >> reporter: now we all know to use surge protectors to protect our electronics. but electricians told me today with the high voltage here, it would not have happened. reporting live in east palo alto, rita williams, ktvu news. pg & e today submitted it's plan to ensure it's pipelines meet standards. the utility says it will test all of its pipes that have not yet been tested. it will also retrofit pipes to allow internal inspection. improved electronic monitoring to quickly find outages. ed ruskin was on hand for the operator of the months award. ruksin has only been at his new jobs for two weeks. one of his first orders of

business was to talk with all nummi employees about what needs to be improve. >> there's no question that we have to do more training, we're improving in equipment. >> reporter: just a week ago a nummi hit and killed a pedestrian. the driver wasn't on his usual route. as a result, nummi may require drivers to get a specific route before picking up any passengers. we have just received new video of crews rescuing two boaters north of the golden gate bridge this afternoon. the coast guard was called just after one o 1:00 this afternoon to plump the men out of their boat when it got stranded on the rocks. a team lowered a basket to bring one boater to safety, the other made it to shore on his own. neither was injured injured but they'll have to wait until high tide to get their boat out of the tide.

a boater heads to san francisco to remember all of those who died. the ride was organized by friends and family of joey nakie. he and 39 others died on the hijacked transliner. in previous years the ride went from new jersey to california. along the path that flight 93 would have taken. for this tenth anniversary. the ride will end at the crash side in shanksville pennsylvania. well, this house is not just an eyesore, neighbors say it's a safety hazard. why the nigerian government may be to blame. an oakland journalist, killers will spend the rest of their life behind bars. what chauncey bailey's brother said after that sentence was read.

the sound of construction is music to the ears of many in the livermore valley. a outlet shopping center is the broom there. a senior residence is under construction. the mayor of livermore says the valley has become a high tech hub and that's attracting new development. a judge today sentenced two men to life in prison in the murder of oakland murder chauncey bailey. bailey and yusuf bey iv heard their sentence. bailey was investigating the financial troubles of bey's family business your black muslim bakely. >> even though chauncey is no longer with us at this time. he is looking down at us seeing that we did a very good thing. seeing justice has been served.

with the move the city has taken. >> reporter: almost every house on this block has architectural appeal. but this house stands out. it stands dilapidated. but to remove the blithe you're going to have to contact the nigerian government. door by door i heard complaints. the eyesore has everyone upset but nobody wanted to talk to us on camera. mason working across the street told wanted to remain anonymous. but says he saw police run a squatter off. >> there was a guy that seemed to be in his mid-20s. he started running from the cops. when the cop started arrests him, he got into a fighting stance to try to fight off the arrest. >> right now it looks like there's five or six that are still outstanding on this particular property on jackson street. >> reporter: the source of the problem boils down to ownership. the nigerian government owns this home and up to this point hasn't responded to complaints. the neighbors would have gotten further faster if they had asked the federal government to step in. >> this might have been accelerated in terms of the enforcement side if people had gone to the state department sooner to say, well we think we've got an issue here.

we can't get any response from the government of nigeria, can you do something about this. >> reporter: two years ago the city made a law requiring property owners to register abandoned business or pay hundreds of dollars in fines. the nigeria government hasn't done either. now the city has contacted the state department. we've all called them and the nigerian embassy and our calls have not been returned. reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. walnut creek officials tell ktvu they are installing new equipment to adjust the traffic lights on ignacio valley road. some 700 vehicles drive ignacio every day. it should be up and running in just about a month. clouds cleared back to near the shoreline. working their way back up into the bay right now. the key headline, we have warmer temperatures for your weekends forecast. right now on the maps i can show you the fog up there banked up just offshore. even pushing locally into the

bay as you can pick out from pacifica. daily city, also san francisco, also surging across the bay and the bay bridge. temperatures today a nice warm up for the inland spots. up in the near 90s. san jose topped out 82 degrees. san francisco at 67, you can pick out on the satellite and radar moisture moving in from the south in the form of higher clouds. we're going to have to keep an eye on this primarily to the south of the bay area for late tonight into early tomorrow morning. high pressure will continue to build in and with that circulation it is drawing up some of that moisture from the south. so with that the chance of a thunderstorms down to salinas, holster and king city. overnight tonight into your saturday morning. but for us we'll pick up a few high clouds and for sunday clearing skies, temperatures that will be the warmest day. that mean it is warmest location inland will be back up into the mid-90s around 95 to 96 degrees. this high begins to weakening into next week as a result we do introduce our next cooling

trend. here's the forecast model. i'm showing you the current model out there. into saturday morning early saturday morning here is the expected pattern at the coast and right around the bay. here we are at 7:00. then we put it into motion. partly cloudy skies for the beaches. but more sunshine as you do work your way across the bay and also for the inland neighborhoods as well. temperatures tomorrow about the same as today or everyone a little bit warmer. fairfield 93 degrees, san rafael in the lower 80s right around 81. oakland mid-70s. warmest locations inland back up into the upper 80s to lower 90s. these temperatures will check in right around 3:00 or 4:00. san francisco some clouds in the morning pulling back to near the shoreline with more sunshine as you do work your way downtown by tomorrow afternoon. we could have a few stubborn patches lingering into the afternoon.

here is the forecast, temperatures will continue to worm as we head into sundays. we will call it hot inland. a few high clouds at least for the first half of the weekend. we begin our next cooling trend on monday as temperatures begin to step down. really cooling into tuesday and wednesday. but for the most part a fairly nice weekend throughout the bay area. we'll have some options with all those microclimates. kaiser employees pitch in to help an oakland community survive. why it needs more than just a clean card. and ben bernanke does not announce new measures for the economy.
