for this morning. good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. it's saturday, august 27th. right now, hurricane-force winds had drenching rains are pounding the north carolina coast. want to show you live pictures from north carolina right now. these are some of the first pictures to come out of the region this morning. you can see it the huge waves coming through. the center of the hurricane made landfall two hours ago. more than two million people along the east coast have been ordered to move to higher ground. irene sustained winds stand at 85 miles per hour. hurricane warnings have been issued from the carolinas up to martha's vineyard in massachusetts. ali rasmus is monitoring flight cancellations in the bay area. rosemary roscoe is tracking the path of the storm. but first we start with elizabeth in virginia beach where the storm is headed next.

elizabeth. >> reporter: the conditions here are certainly deteriorating and they're doing so very, very quickly. only by a couple hundred miles from the eye of hurricane irene, so we're right in the outer bad right now, which means heavy winds and rains and the possibility of tornadoes. we've heard local meteorologists telling people the onlookers to see the surf because you can see behind me it's quite a sight to see, to get indoors because the tornadoes unpredictable. we never know when they'll hit and hurricane irene is only making her way up the east coast. take a look. final preparations underway in virginia, ahead of a monster storm. irene is expected to hit the state in the next 24 hours. >> what is your concern for the storm? >> flooding. and wind damage and trees falling over and hitting houses. >> the biggest concern is the power going out and. >> president obama declaring emergencies for virginia, massachusetts, and connecticut,

after returning to washington late friday. the first family cut short their martha's vineyard vacation. meanwhile, new york city ordering a mandatory evacuation for the first time in its history. as many as 350,000 people have to leave by 5 p.m. saturday. the nation's largest city also planning to shut down its entire public transit system. >> there will be unfortunately a serious storm coming in, and it's better to take precautions and get out of the way of the storm. mother nature is much stronger than all of us. >> in new jersey, mandatory evacuations affecting about one million residents. and all casinos in atlantic city closed. for the third time since they opened in 1978. >> this is going to be a enormous storm. and for new jersey something we haven't seen in over 60 years. do not waste any more time

working on your tan. >> claudine, hundreds of thousands of north caper residents are already out of power. we know they're in the right smack in the middle of it. here tens of thousands are already out of power, and like i said it's another five or six hours before we really start to see the worst of hurricane irene. >> we heard reports that people are doing well with evacuations. you have seen anybody out there or has it looked like everyone is cleared out like they were supposed to? >> it does look like the majority every people have cleared out. however, there are rest are residents wholy wait out the storm, which is whyer why there are so many shelters open. the people who did decide to stay home need to stay home for the next five to six hours. they can't be on the roadways. we just got full reports every road closures. they can't be out with the tornado warnings and the very unpredictable weather. we can't stress that enough. >> real quick, what does it feel like where you're standing now?

what does it seem like now? >> it's certainly unpredictable. the water isn't too cold but you'll have a break a big gust of wind, then you'll be pelted with rain. so we talk about the outer banks or outer bands of the storm, almost having a mind of their own, although it's one big storm in the counter- clockwise motion, really there are hundreds of thousands of little storms, and that's why people are so concerned because unpredictable and it's -- you can't see it coming. tornadoes can happen at any time, and like you can see here, i'll get soaked with rain, and then have a break some it's just -- up and down a very crazy experience. back to you. >> thank you very much. clearly, this will be a long weekend on the east coast. let's check in with rosemary roscoe, who is tracking the path of irene all morning. >> good morning to you. irene came ashore earlier this morning, category 1 in areas north carolina. you can see it there. the latest update, 85 miles per

hour. moving northeast, so while it's a category 1, it is a slow- moving storm, meaning it's going to hang over any certain place for a number of -- at little long ander and that's going to actually continue the soaking rains and the hurricane- force winds for longer amount of time. it came ashore, areas around cape lookout, which is just south, right there at the point. i don't know if you can see the eye on this radar shot. but it's just south of the eye currently, and you can see it the outer bands now beginning to whip over virginia as well. the storm impacts in addition to the soaking rain, the very strong winds. we're talking pretty huge storm impact for the storm surge, from 4 to 8 feet along the north carolina coastline 3 to 6 feet expected for the virginia border. giving you a look at what we expect irene to head from here. it's going to continue a northerly trek it. will begin to weak on by late tonight. it will be approaching areas

right over atlantic city. we're expecting 80-mile-per- hour at that time. continuing to weaken. by tomorrow morning crossing over new york city, long island, and then by late sunday dropping back to 75 miles per hour. still a category 1, not expected to turn no a tropical storm until the late afternoon or early evening sunday. but hurricane warnings definitely in effect, and destructive impacts expected most of the weekend. back to you. irene is forcing the shutdown of the nation's largest subway system. two hours from now at 9 a.m. pacific time, new york is going to halt service on its subways and its buses. six million people ride that subway daily. the tough task of locking up each station and cutting off power to the rails will take eight hours to complete. if new yorkers are not happy about the city's first ever system-wide shutdown. >> how do you shut down the new york city subway system? >> we don't know for sure if it's actually coming and if

it's going to hit us that hard. so you know, you are putting the city in a panic. >> new york yellow cabs will still run, special rates for groups and passengers will be allowed to carry pets. the city is also closing its bridges in case of powerful winds. there's also a mad rush for supplies. look at this photo. you can see it there is nothing left on those shelves. everything from mom and pop grocery stores to department stores, reporting selling out of hurricane supplies such as batteries, flashlights and water. residents grabbing anything they can find, preparing for the worst. irene may be hitting the east coast but the hurricane is also making life tough for travelers here in the bay area. thousands of people hoping to fly back east are now stuck. ali rasmus is live with the flight cancellations. ali. >> reporter: john, all three new york area airports are shutting down operations at 9:00. we're talking about jfk, la guardia and newark new jersey airports some all bay area

flights that were heading there have been cancelled. right now we're inside terminal 2 at sfo, behind me is the american airlines check in counter and we talked to people you see in the line. some of them have still been in line for the last hour, and many of them are trying to rebook their flights and trying to find an alternate way to get to their destination. along with cancellations to new york, there are other cancellations on other east coast airports. a number of flights from sfo to boston, washington, d.c., philadelphia, even chicago, to chicago, cancelled this morning. and the airport manager says that's because that plane he believes -- supposed to fly to chicago may be stuck on the east coast because of the storm. altogether more than 40 flights out of sfo were cancelled this morning. and a lot of international travelers have been affected here since many of their flights going through cities to the east coast before crossing the atlantic. so we talked to one couple from paris who honeymooned here in san francisco. they're connecting flights from

new york to paris and they were told by their airline they won't be able to get another flight out until wednesday. other travelers are also expecting to be stuck here for several days. >> we're just going to wait and see how it goes. we're got plenty of patience. >> just want to get to new york -- don't know what will happen. we've been watching the news all night. and we're a business -- we're on holiday. i've never been to new york before so probably not going to be the new york think that wanted to see. >> along with the 40 flights cancelled in sfo, oakland airport confirm jetblue has cancelled four flights from oakland to new york this morning. we've also put in a call to mineta san jose airport, although we have not heard back from officials there. but we will continue to check in with them and get back to you about a half hour from now. stay with ktvu throughout the morning as we follow path

of irene and take you live to north carolina for the latest from there. you can also find more information on our website, ktvu.com. turning now to other nurse, the cab driver is recovering this morning after being carjacked at gunpoint in san leandro. it happened after midnight. investigators say two people assaulted a driver and then drove off with his cab. the driver flagged down a sheriff's deputy and reported the crime. and then deputies spotted the stolen cab and tried to pull it over. but the driver kept going. leading officers on a short chase. >> that pursuit came down foothill boulevard, where the suspect lost control of the cab, fishtailed, and ended up upside-down, actually in front of the sheriff's substation. >> the carjackers were taken to the hospital. they also recovered a gun at the scene of the crash. santa clara police want your help finding the noon attacked two workers at a denny's restaurant. you can see the man who is hispanic or white in his 30s walk inside the restaurant with two people.

police say he was drunk and got mad at a waitress. he threw silverware at her, cutting her face and left the restaurant. investigators say he returned, punched the manager in the mouth, then knocked the waitress unconscious. she suffered a broken nose and a concussion. the ground shook this morning with two moderate earthquakes after midnight. a 4.6 quake hit about 4 miles from the national monument. the second quake hit about three minutes later. the shaking lasted for about 10 seconds. there are no reports of injuries or damage. good morning to you. giving you a live look in oakland, we have gray skies again, even a little dense fog out there this morning. a little bit of a change in our pattern as we continue to heat it up into the afternoon. so we can deal with a little fog this morning, right? the dense fog in and around at the bay area visibility less than a quarter mile, north bay reporting some dense fog this morning. so just take it easy if you have an early morning drive. it will begin to burn off in the next hour or so, and we'll

be left with partly cloudy skies, mostly cloudy through the morning hours. plenty of sunshine for the afternoon. your fog forecast here, so pretty widespread. partly to mostly cloudy skies inland but by 11:00 we're dealing with mostly clear skies and it should be sooner than that for our inland areas. meanwhile, along the coastline, it takes until noontime, 1:00, mostly clear skies for the coast as well. so another nice day. we do have high pressure continuing, and bringing in a little monsoonal moisture, areas south, holster, salinas, perhaps parts of the southern portions of monterey county, build-up here. outside of that we may get just a few high clouds this and that will be it. so a.m. fog, high clouds in the forecast for the afternoon. temperatures continuing to warm up over yesterday. and we will have clearing skies and sunday could be the warmest day at least foyer our valley locations. 53 now napa, 56 in oakland. low 50s in san francisco. upper 50s hayward. low 60s mountainview. 60 in san jose.

good morning! waking up with gray skies, evenly a little drizzle and dense fog to started our day. temperatures holding in the 50s. hurricane irene is leaving some presidential fund-raisers up in the air. former massachusetts governor mitt romney is scheduled to hold two event this afternoon in the hamptons. they will probably have to be rescheduled. former utah governor jon huntsman is also scheduled a fund-raiser this weekend. the hurricane won't keep him off the campaign trail. minnesota congresswoman michele bachmann is staying clear of the hurricane zone, campaigning in florida. she stopped in jacksonville yesterday to talk to a tea party group. it still hasn't decided whether

it's endorsing bachman. ron paul is campaigning in new hampshire and says the u.s. needs to stop policing the world. >> i as a president would not go to war without a declaration of war, upped attack, and therefore it's up to the people in the congress to declare war when necessary. >> paul made the comments yesterday. the texas congressman has been a vocal critic of president obama's handling of the libya conflict, saying the president should have consulted congress first. the tea party expresses reclaiming america tour today from the bay area starting at 10 a.m. the tour will stop in 29 cities. it ends with a debate between conservative presidential candidates at the florida state fairgrounds in tampa on september 12th. the napa labor council and democrats of napa valley are planning to protest the tea party event today. the president cut short his vacation because of hurricane irene and overnight the first family flew from martha's vineyard to andrews air force

base in maryland. they jumped on to marine one. the president wants to monitor irene and the relief efforts from the white house. another issue weighing on the mind of the president is the upcoming 10th anniversary of 9/11. this morning on his weekly address, he calls on americans to rekindle the spirit of unity that characterized the nation's response to the terrorist attacks. >> so as we mark the solemn anniversary, let's summon that spirit once more and let's show that the sense of common purpose that we need in america doesn't have to be a fleeting moment. it can be a lasting virtue. not just one day but every day. >> on september 11th mr. obama plans to visit ground zero, pennsylvania and the pentagon. relatives of the friends of the 40 passengers who died on united flight 93 are heading to shanksville. they leave on monday for a cross-country motorcycle trip called ride with the 40. the campaign began in 2009 by

the loved ones, one of people on the flight. the ride honors the victims and raises money for the construction of a permanent flight 93 national memorial. british police want to know who was behind an elaborate hoax involving two suspicious devices that closed down parts of a city center. parts of tan bury were evacuated last night after a suspicious package was found near the railway line that looked like an explosive device but it was fake. the bomb squad checked another package insides a department store that one also fake. no one was hurt in either incident. pg&e outlines a plan to make its pipeline safer. there's a catch. plus the wildfire in the california tourist destination. and the progress fire crews made overnight. >> summer temperatures in the forecast for saturday. we'll show you what you can expect for your neighborhood when we come back. @

at new york city through the haze. you can see the statue of liberty there. hurricane irene headed to that area. rosemary says it should hit the new york area overnight and into tomorrow morning, so just about 24 hours from now we'll see how new york is faring. but of course, they are shutting down the subway systems and transit this afternoon so they're already feeling the effects every hurricane irene in advance of her arrival. a wildfire burning outside of yosemite is spreading. the motor fire has grown to 2600 acres. it's been burning in the stanislaus national forest on highway 140 since thursday. about 15 miles of the highway leading to yosemite is closed. cedar lodge, incline and merced campgrounds were evacuated. and nor evacuations could happen today. firefighters say the terrain is making the firefight difficult. the motor fire because it was a rv propane tank that exploded and caught the nearby vegetation on fire. >> air tankers, helicopters and

about 600 firefighters are work to contain the fire. right now there is no estimate as to when highway 140 is going to reopen. pg&e's plan to safeguard a pipeline will cost customers. proposal falls last year's deadly explosion in san bruno. pg&e says its new plan will make the pipeline system the safest in the country. the proposal includes strength testing all pipe segments. installing automated shutoff valves and moving paper records to an electronic management system. but pg&e has outraged some people by proposing customers pay for 90% of the upgrades. that's $1.9 billion over the next three years, amounting to an increase of $2 every month for each customer. the contrast between the weather here and what they're experiencing on the east coast is pretty amazing. it's nice here. >> right. no gripes here. we are starting out with a little fog even dense in some cases. outside of that, we are looking at plenty of sunshine for the

millions evacuated, thousands of flights cancelled this morning. hurricane irene is now battering the east coast shoreline. good morning. welcome back to mornings on 2. we are announcing the first damage caused by the hurricane at this hour, hurricane irene is over north carolina. here are live pictures from egg inner head. irene has already knocked out power to 200,000 customers. hurricane warnings posted from north carolina up to new england. although irene is now a category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 85 miles per hour, she remains a menacing force with plenty of rain. coming up at 7:45, a live report from kill devil hills, north carolina. new york city is taking historic precautions for irene. in any minutes the city will stop all subway and bus service, and this will be the

first time the city has shut down the transit system because of a natural disaster. even on 9/11, the trains ran several hours later. the city has opened 91 evacuation centers full of temporary cots and volunteers ready to help. >> they will be afraid. they'll all be upset. and so lot to deal with but doing the best we can. >> new york city mayor bloomberg has ordered mandatory evacuations in the low-lying airs in new york. and even though irene has not reached the northeast yet, hundreds of people are already showing up at an evacuation center in new jersey. parents carrying babies, seniors and walkers and canes slowly shuffled into a shelter at a college. they did receive some much appreciated comfort food. >> couple days, as long as it lasts, and prayers. >> a thousand people are expected at this one shelter in new jersey. some of the volunteers are

survivors of hurricane katrina. although the bay area's and,000 hiles from irene, we're still falling the fallout. dozens of flights are cancel. alis rasmus it talking to travelers with no place to go. >> reporter: there are still plenty of travelers making their way to the airport but if you have a flight to new york today or tomorrow, forget about it. all three new york area airports, la guards 'ya, newark and jfk, are shutting down operations at 9:00 our time. and there are cancelled flights out of sfo to several other u.s. cities. take a look at the schedule board inside the terminal. you can see the cancellations there. a spokesperson says there are cancelled flights from here to washington, boston, baltimore, philadelphia, even two cancelled american airlines flights to chicago. inside the terminal there were a number of people trying to get rebooked and find alternate plans to their destination.

we also checked with oakland airport. they have four cancelled flights on jetblue. we spoke to one man in line who was from denmark who says he lives in raleigh, north carolina, trying to get home and he is concerned about what might happen to it in the storm. >> little bit -- talking about evacuations and 18 counties, so i'm excited to see how things look when i get home. >> excited or -- scared? >> also that, probably mostly scared. >> we talked to one couple here from paris who honeymooned here in san francisco. their connect, flight to paris was cancelled and they were told they won't be able to get another flight out until wednesday. so you can see how this could have an impact for the next several days, as all these cancelled flights create a domino effect throughout the country and other flights even across the world. ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. the bay area responds to irene is already underway.

local red cross chapters are sending seven volunteers to the east coast. a team from the chapter consists of a nurse and emergency medical technicians. >> makes landfall we'll need a lot of mass care, feeding and sheltering. >> other local agencies helping include the coast guard, spying two specialists. and out of sacramento a coast guard aircraft is on standby ready to deploy up to 10 people to help with anything from search and rescue to transporting supplies. 15 members of the bay area fema management team are now in new hampshire. a federal judge in san francisco has upheld barry bonds' conviction for obstruction of justice. the judge also denied his request for a new trial. bond's attorneys were in court this week asking the judge to toss out bond's constriction for obstruction of justice. the jury deadlocked on three other charges of perjury. formal sentencing is expected in about three months. two men convicted of murdering oakland journalist chauncey bailey will spend their lives in prison.

they were given life without parole. chauncey bailey was shot to death in august of 2007. the prosecution says they ordered the murder to prevent bailey from writing unflattering stories about the now-closed muslim bakery. before sentencing the attorney read a statement from his client. >> this case has never been about truth and justice. it has been about perception and politics. though i know i'm innocent of the crimes in which i'm convicted, i do apologize to my family and to the families of the victims. >> there was an emotional moment in court yesterday when wayly's ex-wife and mother hugged. bailey's ex-wife says she forgives them. attorneys for bay and macke say they will appeal. it's been three months since east bay nursing student michelle le disappeared. family and friends will mark the day by releasing dozens of balloons into the sky. le was last seen leaving a hayward hospital where she worked. today's event will take place on tennyson road from 3 to 6

p.m. they say the case will be solved in the near future. the le family continues to hold hope she will be found alive. family and friends are also taking their cause to social networking sites, call for a viral flash mob asking people to change their profile pictures to michelle's picture. 100 local teachers are receiving a big thank you for their work this morning. right now they're on a $200 shopping spree at the coleman target store. they're buying school supplies for their students. target teamed up with the san francisco sheriff's deputy foundation and an insurance group for civil service employees for today's giveaway. we have a new food recall to tell but this morning. 8,000 packages of smoked salmon are being recalled because they may be contaminated with listeria. it comes from chicago based vita food products. safeway and several other

grocery chains sold it across the country. and gilroy based silva sausage company also issued a recall. the company is recalling 28,000 pounds of its chicken sausage because it failed to list whey as one of its ingredients. they were made between july and august. they are not sold in the san francisco area, but they are available in sacramento, monterey, and the central valley. people can again drink water from a tap without having to boil it. a county boil order on the water was lifted yesterday. the coastal community has been under orders to boil all drinking water since tuesday tests needed to be performed on the water to make sure it was safe after the water pump broke on monday night. good morning to you. giving you a live look outside our doors this morning. widespread gray once again, and that gray even including a little dense fog. so take it easy, maybe even the

windshield wipe remember going because we have drizzle as well. hurricane irene, category 1 at this point, 85 miles per hour, moving northeast at 14 miles per hour so it's a slow-moving storm. that's not good news. came ashore near cape lookout this morning. will continue to be a category 1 as it treks up the east coast. looks like by late this evening approaching atlantic city and the overnight hours, crossing over new york, long island, still expected to be a category 1, and then continuing on into massachusetts by sunday night. looks like overnight hours into monday before finally turning in a tropical storm. satellite and radar at home, high pressure building in but as it swings our way it's also grabbing this monsoonal moisture and dragging it with us. we're not expecting any huge event but you may see a few high clouds this morning, and maybe the possibility of some pile-up over our mountains south of us. we're talking santa cruz, monterey area for the afternoon. you may see maybe a thunderstorm. through the morning ours we've got the gray with us.

rick perry is asking for money this weekend, but it's not for his campaign. in a new letter to the homeland security concerning he is asking for $350 million to cover texas prison costs for illegal immigrants. he says the government isn't doing enough to secure the border with mexico. the governor says that results in increased prison costs for his state. governor perry's request comes after a violent arson attacked in a casino in north mexico. this is any video of the suspects pulling up in front of that casino. the men then spread flammable liquid around the building and lilt it on fire. 52 people died in the attack. there's no motive but the suspects are believed to be drug traffickers. mention an president calderon talked about the attack yesterday, saying the united states must also do its part to help stop drug violence.

weekend for the east coast. it did come ashore just before 5 a.m. our time giving you a live look there at north carolina, and the coastline. you can see that appear there shaking around just a little bit. hurricane-force winds, soaking rain expected throughout the weekend. right now a category 1, 85-mile- per-hour, moving northeast about 14 miles per hour. that is the slow rate. we prefer it move from 25 to 35 miles per hour. but it's just going to hang over the east coast by this afternoon. you can see it is back pretty much over the atlantic as it skirts virginia. by late tonight and the overnight hours it's expected to crosses over long island, parts of new york, still a category 1. winds dying down, but 75-mile-per-hour continuing and then through the afternoon sunday we'll continue its way across connecticut, massachusetts, and it remains a category 1 all the way through late sunday. it looks like it could take late to sunday night into early

we begin this morning with the latest on hurricane irene, the storm made landfall as a category 1 storm near cape lookout, north carolina just after 7:30 local time this morning. with winds at 90 miles per hour. we want to show you a live picture from north carolina. we just learn within the last 30 minutes that 200,000 people in that state are now without power. and the damage is only expected to get worse as irene moves up the eastern seaboard. we have live team coverage. ali rasmus is standing by with the latest travelers this weekend. rosemary is tracking irene in the ktvu weather center. but we want to start with elizabeth in virginia beach this morning, and elizabeth, you're being brought around an hour ago and are conditions getting worse? >> reporter: claudine, it's hard to imagine the conditions are going to get any worse. it's still less than 200 miles away from the eye of the storm some we'll see the conditions continue for hours. take a look.

final preparations underway in virginia ahead of a monster storm. irene is expected to hit the state in the next 24 hours. >> what is your concern for the storm? >> flooding. and wind damage and trees falling over and hitting houses. >> the biggest concern is the power going out with -- >> president obama declaring emergencies for virginia, massachusetts, and connecticut, after returning to washington late friday. the first family cut short their martha's vineyard vacation. meanwhile, new york city ordering a mandatory evacuation for the first time in its history. as many as 350,000 people have to leave by 5 p.m. saturday. the nation's largest city also planning to shut down its entire public transit system. >> there will be unfortunately a serious storm coming in, and it's better to take precautions and get out of the way of the

northeast about 14 miles per hour. so it's a slow-moving storm. came ashore cape lookout. it's now just northeast of cape lookout, and if you look closely it looks like the eye just offshore, but it's lashing out north carolina as well as virginia this morning. the storm impacts in addition to the rainfall and the strong winds are talking storm surge every 4 to 8 feet for the north carolina coast, 3 to 6 feet for the virginia coastline. a look at its track, there it is this morning. it's expected to move across the sounds and then the outer banks, then back out to the atlantic where it's going to skirt virginia and looks like by late this afternoon we'll be approaching areas right around atlantic city. if it continues this course, it takes into the overnight hours tomorrow morning before it crosses over long island, perhaps new york. 75 miles per hour meaning still a category 1 tomorrow morning. particulars will like late sunday night, maybe into monday morning, before it becomes a tropical storm. back to you. as we mentioned, the storm

made landfall in north carolina this morning and it did pack quite a punch. this is how atlantic beach, north carolina looked earlier this morning. this is just about 15 miles away from where irene made landfall. you can see it battering that part of the pier, washing part of it away. >> we're had calls from all over the south, southern governors who have called and offered to help if there are large electrical outages. and so we feel very comfortable that the recovery is planned. >> stay with us here on ktvu mornings on 2. ahead, we're going to go live to north carolina for an update on the conditions this morning. a news alert reports a tropical storm conditions spread into coastal virginia, maryland and delaware right now. that's happening as irene heads north. new york city is getting ready for irene. they're very busy there. new video shows a truck delivering food and other supplies to a shelter this

morning. parts of the city including lower manhattan could see major flooding and fleet to go a mandatory evacuation for 250,000 people. irene is also forcing the shutdown a large subway system. at 9 a.m. pacific time, new york will halt service on its subways and buses. six approximately people ride the subway every day. the tack of locking up east station will take eight hours to complete. there's also a mad rush for supplies. nothing left on the shelves. everything from mom and pop stores to chain department stores report selling outs of hurricane supplies such as batteries, flashlights and water. residents seem to be grabbing anything they can find preparing for the worst. new york city's airports will close today leaving passengers across the country and here in the bay area stranded. ktvu's ali rasmus is live now at sfo, with when the passengers can finally get back into the air. could be some time. >> reporter: that's right. all three new york area airports, la guardia, jfk and

newark are shutting down operations at 9:00 our time. more than half of the cancelled flights out of sfo this morning were supposed to go to one every though three cities. we're at sfo. you can see it a long line of people here behind us in front of the american airlines check- in counter. many of them were trying to rebook their flights and find another way to get to their destination on east coast. and off to the right in this waiting area, there are a number of people sitting there, stuck there, you can see some of them working the phones, trying to find another way to book their flight. and get in another flight home. let's show you the cancellation board and break it down. a total of 40 flights are cancelled today so far out of sfo. most of them new york area. but not all. there are flights from sfo to boston, philadelphia, washington, d.c., and baltimore that have been cancelled so far this morning. and even two flights to chicago on american airlines out of sfo

were cancelled this morning. sfo spokesman says the cancelled chicago flights may be because of the plane going to chicago was supposed to come from the east coast and it's now stuck out there. international travelers have also been impacted. many international flights to europe connect through new york before crossing the atlantic. we talked to a couple from paris who were on their honeymoon here and they were connecting flights to new york to paris was cancelled. they said the airline told them they would not be abe to get on another flight to europe until wednesday. other international travelers say they're also expecting to be stuck here for a few days. >> we're just going to wait and see how it goes. we've got plenty of patience. >> just want to get to new york. we don't know what will happen. been watching the news all night. we're a built disappointed because we're on holiday. i've never been to new york before, and it's probably not the new york that i wanted to see. >> along with the 40 flights cancelled out of something, fo,

are you locking at a live picture from virginia beach, virginia. irene hit the coastline this morning with winds at 90 miles per hour. the winds are now at 85 miles per hour. and tropical storm conditions have spread into coastal virginia, maryland, and delaware. as irene heads north. what a different situation here. make a little fog but really a nice day. >> right. that's our biggest complaint, we are very lucky and we'll have a gorgeous forecast just as warm as yesterday. we found some sunshine above that low cloud deck. we will all begin to see that sunshine in just a couple hours. right now some of our inland areas dealing with mostly sunny skies. we on the other hand along the bay and coast dealing with mostly gray, even dense fog and drizzle to start your morning. temperatures in the 50s to low 60s. lunchtime numbers, 60s along the coastline, 70s around the bay. and approaching 81-degree or so for some of the hottest inland areas. that already by noontime some

police say he is a 54-year-old fisherman who was reported missing by his wife on thursday. the other man was found partially onshore and unresponsive. he was taken to the hospital but we don't know his condition. it is not clear if foul play is involved or if the incidents are connected. two bay area fishermen are safe after their boat ran a grouped. it was disabled before it crashed yesterday afternoon. gary of berkeley and tony of san leandro were crab fishing. one man called 911 from his cell phone. rescuers found him unable to move so they airlifted him to a hospital. >> i feel very lucky. injuries. a beer truck crashed caused a traffic mess in colorado. it happened around 3 lone 30 yesterday afternoon. police believe the driver of that truck there, a coors truck, was speeding and that caused it to tip on its vied. the beer did not spill, but workers had to remove hundreds of boxes every beer from the truck one by one it. took two hours to clean up the accident and reopen the road. >> we had to report the beer! >> very important. two men go on. attack in a denny's restaurant. and from the east coast, to the west, irene is being felt here in the bay area. the airport closures stranding passengers. life storm-tracker 2 keeping tabs on irene. coming up, we'll go live to north carolina on the damage being reported.

we are watching hurricane irene this morning. the storm made landfall overnight and it is already causing widespread flooding throughout north carolina. and it is only expected to get worse. welcome back to mornings on 2. right now irene is packing winds up to 85 miles per hour. here's a live picture from the beach in north carolina. irene is still a category 1 storm. we have live team coverage. let's go straight to rosemary in the ktvu weather center. >> reporter: good morning to you. category 1 meaning it weakened over the last 24 but it's a huge storm. take a look at how big it is. and we've been talking about the possibility of it being maybe wider than the state of texas. you see that? 731 miles. the state of texas is about 690 miles wide. so that's how big this storm

is. the category 1, 85 miles per hour, and moving northeast at 14 miles per hour. typically these types of storms moving 25 to 35 miles per hum we wanted to get out of the way, and but instead it's hovering and pounding, winds be rain, as well as the storm surge. look at the track expected. came ashore this morning, cape lookout will continue its northeasterly trek even moving back over the atlantic at some point as it skirts over virginia and looks like maryland and atlantic city, very close there by late tonight, early tom morning, moving over long island, new york still a category 1 although weakening a little bit. 75 miles per hour when it crosses over early tomorrow morning over parts every the big apple. and continuing on over connecticut as well as massachusetts, expected do finally drop off to a tropical storm perhaps sunday night into monday morning. back to you. as airlines are canceling flights across the country, ali rasmus is live now with more on

what people are doing and what we can expect. >> reporter: we're outside terminal 2 at sfo, where you can see there are still a lot of travelers making their way to the airport this morning. but if you have a flight to new york, today or tomorrow, forget it. all three new york area airports, la guardia, newark, and jfk are shutting down operations a half hour from now, 9 a.m. our time. let's show you the schedule board. according to spokespersons, there are a total of 40 cancelled flights to not just new york, but to several other u.s. cities. those affected cities are to washington, d.c., boston, baltimore, philadelphia, and even two cancelled american airlines flights to chicago this morning. oakland airport also has four cancelled flights on jetblue to new york and they are waiting to get -- hear back on some cancelled flights on east coast on delta and u.s. airways as well.

inside the terminal at american airlines check-in counter there's been a long line of people all morning trying to get other flights to get home. we spoke to one man who is from denmark but who lives in raleigh, north carolina. and he is worried about his home. >> little bit. talking about evacuations and 18 counties, i think. so i'm excited to see how things look when i get home. >> excited or scared? >> also that, probably mostly scared. >> we talked to a couple from paris who are on their honeymoon. their connecting flight to new york to paris was cancelled and they said the airline told they wouldn't get another flight until wednesday. so the impact of this ripple effect could go on for several days. check with your airlines before you get to the airport. your flight could be affected. ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. the bay area response to

irene is underway. local red cross chapters are sending seven volunteers to the east coast. a team from the silicon valley consists of a nurse and emergency medical technician. >> it makes landfall we'll need a lot of mass care, feeding and sheltering. >> other agencies here sending help include the coast guard, deploying two specialists, and in sacramento a c-130 aircraft is on standby ready to deploy up to 10 people to help with anything from search and rescue to transporting supplies. 15 members of a bay area fema management team are now in new hampshire as well. new york city is taking precautions for irene. a half hour from now they'll begin to stop all subway and bus service it. will be the first time the city has shut down the entire transit system because of a natural disaster. even on 9/11 the trains ran several hours later. >> we'll be afraid, all upset,

and so there's a lot to deal with. but we're doing the best we can. >> new york mayor bloomberg has ordered mandatory evacuations in the low-lying areas of staten island, brooklyn, queens and manhattan. and the city's biggest utility just said if there's serious flooding, they are going to cut power. even though irene has not reached the northeast yet, hundreds of people already showed up in an evacuation center in new jersey. parents carrying babies, seniors and walk pictures canes shuffled into a shelter at a college and got much appreciated comfort food. >> couple days, like two or three days, as long as it lasts. and prayers. >> a thousand people are expected at that one sheller teenager. some of the volunteers are survivors of hurricane can. we're getting a better look at the aftermath of irene in the bahamas. the government is in the process of assessing the damage

but we want to show you some pictures about area because if those are any indication, the damage could be expensive. look at that, hundreds of homes damaged or destroyed by the homes, bahamas, include about 700 islands, many of them remote and sparsely populated. so far, however, there are no reports of deaths or major injuries. and this is a view of hurricane irene from the international space station. all you see is that white there. nasa posted these pictures of the massive storm on its website. we're trying to show you the center of the circulation because it's not well defined in the pictures. you can see it some of that circulation -- this is bigger than the state of texas and the national hurricane center warning everyone, irene is packing quite a punch. military jets from many east core bases are out of harm's way this morning. the naval air station at pensacola, florida was one place where they were sent. more than 30 aircraft and their crews landed there. as we mentioned earlier, hurricane irene is now over the north carolina coast. reporter raphael romo is in north carolina. what are the conditions like

now? >> reporter: john, we are experiencing multiple effects as a result of hurricane irene hitting this part of the country. i can tell you about powerful winds, torrential rains, about 200,000 people or more without power. we also heard reports of a boat rescue by the coast guard, a man and a woman were rescued earlier this morning. also the american red cross is reporting that as many as 13,000 people are at their shelters in seven states, that are expected to be affected by hurricane irene. so multiple effects everywhere, as a result of hurricane irene, and this system is just beginning. it's only the beginning. but we're taking a look at here a north carolina, john. >> hurricane irene made landfall near cape lookout, north carolina this morning in cities along the east coast are bracing for this major storm.

where irene has created the storm surge of from 4 to 8 feet along that beach line and the north carolina coast. pounding rain as well as heavy winds, winds to 85 miles per hour in some cases, and we already have flooding reported in north carolina as well virginia. people can again drink water out of the tap without having to boil it. a county boil water order was lifted yesterday. tests needed to be performed to make sure the water water safe after the town's water pump broke monday night. santa clara police want your help to find a man who attacked two employees at a denny's restaurant. part of that attack was caught on video. in the video there's a suspect who is hispanic or white, man in his 30s, who walks inside the restaurant with two other people. police say he was drunk and got mad at a waitress and

apparently threw silverware, cutting her face. police say the man left the restaurant, but then came back and punchened the manager in the mouth then knocked the waitress unconscious. she suffered a broken nose and concussion. police are asking for the public's help in finding the people who killed a woman in the east san jose area. the 52-year-old victim was found yesterday at a home in the 1200 block of whitton avenue. the person who found the body went it a nearby fire station to report it. investigators have not identified the victim or a motive but they have ruled out gang involvement. walnut creek is trying out to a new high-tech camera system that could help speed up the commute. engineers say the camera system can can count cars and learn traffic patterns to adjust the timing of the lights during busy commute times. engineers have been doing the same thing for 20 years but the city says this new program is much more efficient. >> all of data from all cameras is like five heads working together to see what is going on with the exterior. >> state grant helped pay for

the project which will cover 17 in sections. a federal judge in san francisco has upheld barry bonds' conviction for obstruction of justice. the judge also denied his request for a new trial. his attorneys were in court this week asking the judge to toss out the conviction. the jury deadlocked on three other charges of perjury. sentencing now expected to happen in about three months. two men convicted of murdering oakland journalist chauncey bailey will spend their lives in prison. they were both given life without parole. the prosecution says bay ordered the murder to prevent bayfully writing unflattering stories about the now closed muslim bakery. before sentencing the attorney read a statement from his client. >> this case has never been about truth and justice. it has been about perception and politics. though i know i'm innocent of the crimes in which i'm convicted, i do apologize to my family and to the families of

the old barney's casino. the casino's new owner believes the safe belonged to a former owner who was killed more than 40 years ago by a car bomb. but three lock myths have tried to hope it and failed. officials say they do plan to try again next week. a horrendous arson attack in a casino in north mexico left 52 people dead. authorities say the men who did this spread flammable liquid around the interior of the building and lit it on fire. there's no motive but the suspects are believed to be drug traffickers. the mexican president talked about the attack yesterday saying the united states must also do its part to help stop drug violence. >> united states should kleb rat eight least to avoid letting the dollars that come into mexico to generate this kind of thank we mexicans do not want. >> the president says the u.s. must reduce its consumption of drugs and sales of guns. president calderon also

declared three days of mourning for the victims. texas governor rick perry is asking for money but it's not for his campaign. in a new letter to the homeland security department, he is asking for $350 million to cover texas prison costs for illegal immigrants. he says the government isn't doing enough to secure the border with mexico. the governor says that results in increased prison costs for his state. hurricane irene is putting some presidential fund-raiser up in the air. former massachusetts governor mitt romney is scheduled to home two events this weekend in the hamptons. a spokeswoman says the fund- raisers are probably going to have to be rescheduled. former utah governor jon huntsman is also scheduled to hold a new york area fund- raiser this weekend. irene won't keep the former cover off the campaign trail. minnesota congresswoman michele bachmann is staying clear of the hurricane area and instead campaigning in florida. she stopped in jacksonville beach yesterday to speak to a tea party group. they still haven't decided

north carolina. irene has knocked out power to more than 200,000 customers across north carolina and it's also wreaking havoc with travel plans. sfo reporting 40 flights are cancelled today. four jetblue flights cancelled in oakland. a cluster of earthquakes shook the area this morning. the largest a 4.6 magnitude after midnight. the shaking lasted for about 10 seconds. then no reports every any injuries or damages. two people are in custody in san leandro after leading authorities on a short chase in a stolen taxicab. the chase ended when the suspects lost control of the cab and it rolled over. the two suspects were taken to the hospital. authorities say they carjacked a cab driver overnight at gunpoint. they did recover the gun at the scene of the crash. rosemary, this really is the kind of day that keeps you very busy looking at what is going on on the east coast. >> yes. you can't take your eyes off! irene one last time before we go. if are you just joining us, the

span of about 690 miles very wide, so even the inland areas expected to be impacted by irene and you can see it right now in addition to north carolina, virginia being blasted as well with very heavy rain. the eye looks like just offshore, came ashore earlier this morning. cape lookout and as it treks its way north it's expected to remain a hurricane, category 1 storm. in addition to the heavy rain, rainfall 6 to 10 inches. winds 85 miles per hour. currently the storm surge from 4 to 8 feet for the north carolina coastline. three to six inches perhaps more for the virginia border. and as we move again into the afternoon, it will continue its trek by tomorrow morning, should be over a long island and new york city. 54 degrees is our coolest area at this time. 67 expected as we move through the next hour or so. we will begin to warm up. clouds will begin to break just a little bit and we'll be mostly sunny for the lunch hour. low 60s around the coastline. 70s for the bay. lunchtime low 80s for warmer inland areas. by noontime.
