in the line of duty in afghanistan. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00. good evening, i'm ken wayne. >> i'm heather holmes. irene is now a tropical storm, but that is not much consolation to the millions left in its path this evening. flood and rain-swollen rivers are a major concern tonight as the storm moves across new england towards the u.s.-canada border. this was the scene this afternoon in vermont. much of the northeast remains under a state of emergency as they are dealing with swollen rivers, power outages and beach erosions. officials in the carolinas got a closer look today at all of that damage. >> this hurricane really was a big woman. irene was a big, big girl and stayed over the state more than 24 hours and we're hearing everybody that we talk to says that wind damage and windfall was part of the reason there

was so much structural damage. >> at least 18 people are reported dead in storm-related accidents. experts estimate that that storm left $7 billion worth of damage in its wage. >> tropical storm irene is disrupting air traffic across the country. here in the bay area, passengers at san francisco are trying to head east are experiencing the most problems today. we just got an update from sfo within the last 20 minutes, which is now reporting 46 flights to the northeast have been canceled today. the only flights canceled in oakland and san josi are jet blu flights to jfk airport in new york and a flight to boston. airlines are urging passengers to check their flight status before leaving for the airport. these are some of the last flights to take off from boston's logan airport yesterday. the airport is open, but that is really in name only. today all airlines serving the airport canceled their flights and many rented cars to get to their destinations. the airport is expected to

resume normal operations tomorrow. airlines are planning to bring in extra staff to help with the dilug of passengers. across the u.s. they canceled more than 10,000 flights this weekend. new york's port authority closed the region's main airport as the storms approached. the airports are expected to re- open tomorrow. jets serving the airports are scattered across the u.s. and will take a while for operations to get back up to speed. philadelphia's main airport re- opened four hours ago, but many flights there are still canceled. >> president obama says federal agencies are doing everything possible to help with recovery efforts. >> our thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost loved ones and those whose lives have been affected by the storm. you need to know america will be with you in your hour of need. >> the president was joined bit secretary of homeland security and administrator of

fema during his rose garden address and urged northeast residents to remain vigilant and warned that the worst may not be over yet. the president also praised the efforts of the first- responders. irene pass offend new york city leaving lots of water, but not as much damage as initially feared. we're in rhode island to tell us how residents across the northeast are faring tonight. >> reporter: holly. >> reporter: heather, the threat of irene has come and gone, but the devastation that she left in her path will take weeks if not longer to clean up. tropical storm irene raced through new jersey, new york and new england sunday. although it's no longer packing hur force winds irene is creating pornly life- threatening flooding in northeast. while many communities are waiting to see how high the waterses will rise, some, including new york city were spared from the worst-case scenario. all in all we're in pretty good shape because of the exhaustive zeps we took to prepare for

whatever came our way. >> reporter: coastal aareas took a brutal beating and there was flooding further inland. governor christie says residents should stay off the road while damage is assessed. >> i cannot urge people strongly enough, maybe i can. stay inside. please stay inside. >> are the nation's capital, 200 trees were brought down bit storm, including these at the normal cathedral. along chesapeake bay, these were along those surfing. the president is warning the public to remain vigilant. >> the impacts of this storm will be felt for some time and the recovery effort will last for weeks or longer. >> reporter: the storm has left millions without power up and down the east coast and it could be days before the lights are back on. and here in newport, rhode island, what we're experiencing

is called west wines basically on an island on the on and off and there is no barrier, so the winds are just beating us from offshore. we're getting wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour at some point and as you can see these boats are rocking in the harbor. there has been people coming in and out, checking on their boats all day long and we spoke to residents who actually live on their boats and they say what they are concerned about is some of the sailboats docked out in the harbor and they are concerned that they may break loose and head into shore. so everybody is vigilantly watching what is happening on the shoreline, halpern. heather, thank you very much. >> meteorologist mark tamayo. >> we have the most recent update from the hurricane sinter winds down to 50 miles per hour. one piece of good news. it has picked up in acceleration over the past few hours. location moving into vermont,

you can still see a signal rain- producer heading to the north and east, but overnight, this system will be moving into canada, still capable of producing heavy rainfall. here is a look at some of the rainfall totals you can pick out from connecticut to central park, new york and look at north carolina, over 14" of rain. in fact, nearly 15" of rain as irene pushed onshore early scat morning. as far as our changing weather pattern, i will have more on that coming up in just a little bit. >> thank you, mark. we'll continue our coverage of tropical storm irene and its aftermath at 5:30 and go rhode island. >> here at hole, in fairfield, fire crews are putting out the lot hotspots of a fire that burned over a thousand acres over the past two days. ktvu's patti lee is in fairfield, where the incident commander says the fire is now 90% contains. >> reporter: really the house that was nearly consumed by that fire and can you see by the blackened grass, just how

close it got. and take a look at this ground. it's covered in a red dust. this is actually a fire retardant that was air dropped to save this home that was once surrounded by flames. from the air, a calfire incident commander spots problem areas. >> well, this is where we see it here. >> reporter: the information relayed to more than 200 firefighters on the ground. >> we're running out of water right now and we're on our way to get more. >> reporter: this blaze which started before 6:00 last night was whipped up by strong winds which pushed flames away from this nearby subdivision, but barrel towards this lone house on the hill, where we caught up with the owner and calfire's assistant fire chief. >> they let you come back to the house. >> i don't know where these fires are coming from, my god, this is just carelessness. >> reporter: i. >> i know our investigators are looking for what exactly cause it. >> reporter: he says the fire should be contained by 6:00

tonight, at least that is the goal. >> we're trying to get everything down before the big wind gets here, before 7:00. that way we'll have a good a boundary. >> reporter: crews used bulldozer to dig that boundary ahead of the fire, containing it to 715 acres. >> we are seeing an uptick in activity statewide. and none of those fires are burning into major fires at this point, but it's going to continue to dry out. >> reporter: you can see that there are still hotspots here, but as of 6:00 tonight, this fire is expected to be 100% contained. it was one of four wildfires burning across the state today, but late this afternoon, two new wildfires were reported, including one in nearby gordon valley. live in fairfield, patti lee, ktvu channel 2 news. >> in oregon tonight red-flag warnings of lightning strikes are in effect until 11:00 as crews there battle a series of

fires across that state. lightning strikes last week sparked those fires. the largest cluster of fires started wednesday and has already burned more than 18,000 acres in eastern oregon. in the sierras tonight the motor fire outside of yosemite national park has grown to 4600 acres. highway 140 between mariposa and the main entrance is now closed, but the park itself is still open. of the blaze began thursday afternoon when a motorhome caught fire on the highway. more than 100 people have been ordered to leave the area with more evacuations possible. the fire is just 35% contained tonight and officials warn it may not be contained until september 9th. highways 41 and 120 into yosemite remain open tonight. three people are recovering tonight after a small plane made an emergency landing on a napa highway. the napa valley registry reports the single-engine aircraft reported having mechanical problems and was trying to land at napa county

airport around 12:40 this afternoon when it crashlanded into a car on highway 49. the car's driver and two passengers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. the two people in the plane were not hurt. the 5th major sandstorm in six weeks rolled over phoenix this weekend. here we go again. 60 miles per hour winds pushed the dust storm or haboob over phoenix yesterday following an even larger dust storm on friday when temperatures soared to 117 degrees. the bust storms can reach a thousand feet high and be 50 miles wide. forecasters predict more dust storms due to the unusually dry and hot weather in the region. commuters beware there is yet another protest planned for your monday rush hour commute and how people are reacting. two men recovering from gunshot wounds in san francisco, but police don't believe they were both targets the gunman. and family and friends in

. san francisco fire truck collided with a vehicle while responding to tan emergency call in the city this morning. the accident happened around 8:30 on 8th and harrison streets in the south of market neighborhood. paramedic supervisor in the fire truck and a person in a black truck were taken to the hospital with non-life- threatening injuries. the cause of the crash is under investigation. if you ride bart, get ready for yet another protest at the civic center station tomorrow. as kutv's claudine wong tells us tonight, it looks like there will be several different protests during the rush hour evening commute. >> reporter: we have all seen the chaos and as monday approaches, authorities are getting ready again. the group anonymous says it will protest tomorrow night and every monday indefinitely. but is more better? >> no. it's not.

>> i think it's expressive and it's affecting the wrong people. >> reporter: among other things, protesters want the bart police chief and the chief spokesperson fired and another investigation into the police shooting of a man armed way knife. >> they always pick the thing that is going to get the most attention and they keep biting into that. i don't understand it. >> reporter: the commuters will deal with two protests because there is a protest planned protesting the protesters. the group called commuters take back bart says it will protest at the same time to show the "misguided protesters that they are outnumbered and won't shut down bart again." . >> not surprising. i would be mad as well. >> reporter: it will be an evening of dualing protests. during the last protest 35 people were arrested, and one commuter told us she is crossing her fingers because she can't ferry in and she can't drive. >> it's not really an option for me and i hope it doesn't continue. >> reporter: one thing concern

is that the protests are growing and puts its cost at $70,000. in oakland, claudine wong, ktvu. a fatal stabbing in san josi is the latest in an unexpected surge in homicides this year. police found a man who was stabbed in south san josi around o10:30 and he died an hour later at san jose regional medical center. his death is the 32nd homicide in san josi this year, compared to just 20 in all of last year. no arrests have been made in last night's killing. two men are being treated for gunshot wounds after a man opened fire in the market district. police say the shooter opened fire on a man in his 40s around 21:15 2:15 a.m. both men are expected to survive. no arrests have been made, but the gunman is described only as a black pleal in his 20s. the clean-up is underway from an overnight fire anyway

child-care center in san francisco. the one-alarm fire started in the computer room of the children's council of san francisco. investigators do not consider the fire suspicious and believe it may have been caused by overheating equipment. ktvu news would like to apologize for mistakenly reporting this morning that that fire occurred at mission high school. we are nearing the one-year anniversary of the deadly explosion in san bruno and this week we could be a little closer to figuring out exactly what went wrong. the national transportation safety board is expected to release its final report on the blast in washington, d.c. on tuesday. last september as explosion killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes. two community events will be held in san bruno next month to remember those who died. coming up on ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00 a. a navy seal shot and killed in gay and lesbianed today in the south bay and we'll tell you his connection to san josi and how he made a difference. >> they have been sentenced to

remembered today in san josi. ktvu's janine de la vega was at the service where family members say he died doing what he loved. >> reporter: heather, even though navy seal kevin houston was killed three weeks ago, his death really hasn't sunk in for family from san josi. so that is why they hold a memorial service today, since many of thome could not attend his funeral in arlington, virginia. kevin houston was one of the 30 navy seals killed with their helicopter was shot down in afghanistan earlier this month. >> i know he was in the helicopter, he didn't flinch at all. that is how he was. he was a brave, brave guy and we loved hill a lot. >> reporter: houston spent part of his childhood in san josi before he moved to massachusetts. relatives describe hims a

janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. an appeal has been filed for two uc berkeley graduates sentenced to eight years in an iranian prison, shane bauer and josh fattal are charged with espionage. along with sarah shourd they were captured in 2009 along the iranian iraq border. the three say they were hiking when they inadvertently crossed into iran. now to the latest in libya and sporadic fighting continues in tripoli, but as arwa damon tells us that forces loyal to muammar gadhafi have fled. >> as news of the rebel arrival spread, residents of qasr bin gashir emerged in small groups. they had heard of liberation in various parts of the country,

even in tripoli. but they remain trapped. there was a military position here and over there, and there another base. she says they had no choice, but to lock their doors and pray gadhafi's forces would stay away from them. all of these flags were just recently painted whether the residents here realized that gadhafi forced begun to pull out and paint on this one is still wet and they say this is the first time that they have actually been able to feel freedom. gadhafi's forces had imbeddeds they in these farmlands, using the civilian population for cover. as they pounded rebels who took the tripoli international airport a week ago. nato and rebels were only able to target some areas in the area. they thought that the intensity of the fighting was linked to gadhafi's whereabouts and flue

millions without power the northeast is beginning to survey the damage. craig bosswell is in newport, rhode island to tell us about the conditions there. >> reporter: good evening, heather. half of the customers in rhode island remain without power, likely going to be that way for some time for many of them and that utility crews can't get out to begin on the lines until these winds are below 40 miles per hour. >> i want people to understand that this is not over. response and recovery efforts will be an ongoing operation and i urge americans in affected areas to continue to listen for the guidance and direction of their state and local officials. >> reporter: eastern seaboard bore the brunt of hurricane irene and people across are assessing the damage. in new york, they hunkered down and irene turned into a tropical storm.

doing the work are with the california air national guard 129th. >> they can go down a hoist attached to the side of the helicopter and participate in the personnel recovery. >> reporter: personnel recovery means rescuing people from flood areas, fast-moving waterways and even the open seas. it's what the 129th rescue wing specializes in. these photos are from rescue operation after hurricane ike hit. >> we participated in over 50 rescues in that hurricane. >> reporter: this morning the 129th was called up, ordered to go to mcguire air force base to help with tropical storm irene. moments after the plane began to taxi on the run uaw, authorities in washington, d.c. told the 129th to standby. after hours of preparation, the mission was canceled. tropical storm irene didn't cause the amount of damage feared. >> the rescue capability that we provide wasn't necessary at the time, given the nature of

the conditions. >> reporter: most of the men and women in the squadron are part-time reservists. >> we have people who are san francisco cop, local college students, executives from the silicon valley, just about every walk of life. >> reporter: now they get to go back to their regular jobs and be ready for the next rescue operation. at moffette field, allie rasmus. >> tomorrow is the anniversary of another devastating storm. it was six years ago hurricane katrina swept through the gulf coast. more than 1800 people died in the storm and subsequent flooding of the most of the deaths occurred in new orleans when a levee system failed and flooded the city. they will gather tomorrow in st. bernard parish to commemorate the victims of the tragedy. >> it could mean good news at the gas pump. it will actually drive gas prices down over the next two

oakland for the street feast. thousands of people attended this weekend's event, which featured live entertainment, food and art. organizers from the city chamber of commerce say this festival is an opportunity to showcase chinese culture and traditions and preserve a sense ever community. the next ballot over proposition 8 will be wind tomorrow inside a san francisco federal courtroom. opponents of the voter-approved initiative banning same-sex marriages will ask a judge to release video recordings of the entire prop 8 trial and they argue that the public has a first amendment right to know. a small earthquake struck this morning near the montey san benito line. the u.s.g.s. says the quake was a 3.0 and centered six miles northwest of the pin ilks. it was felt in salinas and san

josi. there were no reports of any damage from either quake. the final section of the new eastern span of the bay bridge is set to arrive from china tomorrow and add lighting. cloud cover out there, but then the sun broke through and it's pretty nice. let's check in with mark tamayo. >> pretty nice day across most of the bay area and, in fact, a fairly nice weekend with temperatures warming up, especially away from the water. right now i can show you this on live stormtracker 2, fog tracker and some clearing near parts of the coastline, around san francisco, you can pick out around the golden gate bridge and even a few patches pushing back into the embankment transamerica building there, currently 61 degrees. 61 degrees fahrenheit, if you

want to convert to celsius, swap the numbers, 16 degrees. it's the only temperature you can do that. just a random fact to share with you. 91 degrees in fairfield, livermore, 91 and san jose lower 70s, 81. oakland, lower 70s and that there is that 61 that we already reviewed for san francisco. forecast story for tonight, we do have mostly clear skies inland, but areas of fog regrouping. cool temperatures for the coast. hot numbers inland and we bring in cooler temperatures in the extended forecast. overnight lows tomorrow morning, pretty chilly, especially in santa rosa. san francisco, 53. san josi, 57 and livermore around 56 degrees. fog targeting the coast and right around the embankment high pressure has been rebuilding and strengthening over the past few days. it will stick around for tomorrow. not much of a change in temperatures, just a little bit cooler. here is the next cooling trend, there is another cooling trend on the way that kicks in tuesday and wednesday and as a result we'll increase the fog that will push inland and temperatures continue to cool

off tuesday and also into wednesday, but no major changes at least in our forecast over the next few days and no heatwaves showing up on the long-range weather maps just yet. 7:00, coastside around the bay and possibly a few patches inland. we we put this into motion the clouds go back to near the shoreline and still patchy fog for the coast. the brighter colors reflecting the warmer locations in the 90s. 7:00, 52-57 degrees. still some patchy coastal fog at 12:00 and hot numbers inland. a big temperature range for tomorrow afternoon frrkts lower 60s to the lower 90s. santa rosaa, 86, fairfield 91 degrees and richmond at 72. oakland around 73 and livermore in the lower 90s. these temperatures will about the same, could be 2-3 degrees cooler. fremont alt 81 and san
