killing a toddler in oakland has just wrapped up appearance in court. tara moriarty joins us live to explain what happened. >> reporter: well, lawrence denard was supposed to enter a plea let than 15 minutes ago but hiss public defender is on vacation -- his public defender is on vacation. so it was postponed. denard entered, was ratherring -- was wearing a red jumpsuit. he smiled and nodded at friended and family in the courtroom. now this, was outside the courtroom. the scene was too emotional for one of the denard's supporters. he's accused of killing carlos nava. he and his mother were picking up pizza when nava was gunned down in broad daylight.

a big rig has collided with at least two other vehicles. you can see newschopper2 zooming in a little bit. you can see a white prius on the right scene and -- screen and then a white van. and then it lookings like a lot of -- looks like a lot of damage has been done and then a bulldozer in the middle and some police -- some crews down there on the side of the road talking about the situation. again, at least one person has died in this accident. both directions of highway 12 in napa, near napa are closed between i-80 and north kelly road. the chp says the investigation will take a long time, in fact, this closure could continue into the evening commute, you can always get updates on your website at ktvu.com. the storm left widespread damage, flooding and power outages in its wake. and hurricane irene is also being blamed for at least 30 deaths now across ten states.

adam haasly has our report on what the storm left behind -- left behind. >> reporter: in hoboken, new jersey some residents are knee deep. north of new york, irene forced water from the sawmill river through jut one neighborhood. and some peer are taking it all in stride. >> something i can could -- nothing i can do. it's mother nature. >> reporter: floodwaters killed rocklin county. >> you can see the massive flood come through here. homes, residents evacuated, 200 residents displayed. >> reporter: the greenville river in massachusetts was flooded washing away cars. >> i think it's the crazy thing i've seen for living in greenfield. >> reporter: the storm left its mark in connecticut. >> they have stairs going down to the beach.

emergency -- an emergency for new york. the price tag could be in the tense of millions of dollars. irene is still causing more flight cancellations at san francisco international. five departing flights headed to the northeast were cancelled this morning. even though major airports affected by hurricane irene have resumed operations. airplanes still need to get planes and flight crews in place. this is making it tough on some who are scrambling to catch new flights. >> how much of a delay are you experiences? >> about eight hours. >> what's your hurry now? >> try to set -- too try -- try to get out on stand by. >> this morning 26 arriving flights were cancelled. a giant bronze statue featuring over two dozen historic figures is being set in place in oakland today. kraig debro has watched the process unfold and it's attracted a lot of attention.

it is back to school day in oakland. these children attend franklin elementary school. district officials made a concerted effort this year to make sure every student shows you on the first day. the first day of school has traditionally had high absentee rates in the oakland district. antioch police are trying to find thieves who have hit a roman catholic church there several times in the past month. the church is saint ignacios on contra loma boulevard. as allie rasmus reports, most of the thefts have targeted one thing -- copper wiring. >> we feel violated. >> reporter: that was the father's reaction when he saw what heefes did to the electrical system -- what thieves did to the electrical system. >> they disconnected the conduit. once that was disconnected, it

tripoli. officials will not extradite the lockerbie bombing. he has cancer and is reported to be near death. 270 people died when the pan am flight blew up over lockerbie, scotland. a cross-country motorcycle trip is underway at this hour to honor those who died on flight 93 during the september 11th attacks. family members and friends began their 11-day ride near the san francisco airport where the plane was headed flight 93 but never arrived. the riders are headed to the pennsylvania field but the plane crashed after passengers overcame the hijackers. it was the reversal from the ride in 2009 that mirrored the flight path from new ark, new jersey, to -- newark, new jersey to san francisco. >> we decided to retrace the track the other way, to reach out to more people, tell the story about flight 93, hopefully raise a little bit of money and bring as money people

as we can to the dedication of the memorial. >> the field in shanksville, pennsylvania, is also the site of the national memorial. a dedication will be held for the first phase of the memorial on the 10th anniversary of the attacks in just a couple of weeks. a bill designed to crackdown on balt salt drugs is going before the senate today. bath salt drugs contain synthetics and can cause paranoia, hallucinationsant other problems. they are sold under a variety of labels. a bill was authored to ban the sale. people caught selling the synthetics could face up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000. good afternoon to you on this monday. we are -- we're looking at mostly sunny skies. a little bit of haze out there this morning. some of us dealing with clear skies where we didn't see them yesterday and here's why --

that means we're way below average for late august, thursday and friday, back into the muper 80s. along the coastline widespread 60s expected through the weekend as well -- as well. >> no be a nice -- gonna be a nice labor day weekend. a wildfire near so membertity -- yosemite kents -- continues to burn. the fire has burned more than 4700 acres since it started on thursday after a motor home caught fire on the highway. the fire is 35% contained. it's not expected to be completely under control for more than a week. more than 100 people have been ordered to leave the area and more evacuations are possible. other highways into the yosemite park remain open. san francisco's muni is reportedly looking at a plan that would allow people to board buses at all doors. right now, everyone has to get on at the front door. but a blogger on the san
