that's the top story today. good afternoon i'm tori campbell. just as classes are getting underway. craig joins us live with the criminal activity good afternoon. >>reporter: the intersection made famous by the 60s protest. talking crime. not unusual to have an increase in crime at the beginning of the school year. that doesn't make it easier for the victims to cope with their sense of violation. sexual crimes happened saturday night just west of tele graph. one pushed the victim. all three robbed him of a wallet and iphone. all three students live on the block. >> you think you are safe cause there's so many people but turns

out you are not. >>reporter: there was been a number of crimes on the campus over the past 10 days. the latest is this robbery. there were three sexual assaults in this time period. one of them happened here on oxford and center street. he asked the woman for directions. as soon as she began to help, the man grabbed her breasts and groin. >> you always have to be on your guard. never for a second let your guard now. it's scary but i'm here to learn. there's risks i'm willing to take. >>reporter: one of them was a mother of an incoming freshman. suspects have been arrested. issued a crime alert. posted on the website along with strategies students can use. residents are using the web to communicate on crimes. the students we talked to say they

heard about the robbery from facebook. reporting live craig, channel 2 news. >> thank you. police patrols will be increasing after the tires of more than 60 cars were slashed. cars were targeting along 17 blocks. mostly on california street. we found one man who just moved to the area for a job only to wake up to find his rental truck damaged. police tell us they know who they are looking for and arrest could be made as early as today. paloalto someone broke into ernie's wines and liquors. smashed a window and took cash and a computer. it's believed the same man involved in these two burglaries is responsible

for up to 10 in several cities since 2009. . a veteran san jose police officer is out on bail after an arrest on sex crime charges. 44-year-old patrick darrigo is accused of molesting a 15-year-old boy and 17-year-old boy in his home and providing the teens with alcohol. he was fired from the san jose police department after he was convicted of a drunk driving accident cover up for district attorney's investigator. he was later reinstated. . san francisco police are increasing patrols after two gang related killings in just 24 hours. flowers marked the spot where 22 restaurant cook was shot and killed on tuesday. two men approached him during a smoke break and shot him in the

face. police think they mistook him for a gang member. shot multiple times on hamp shier street and pronounced dead on the street. >> they are trying to saturate that area and make sure they know who people are and try to stop things before they happen. >> police don't know if the two shootings are connected. they are asking the public to help by notifying police of any gang activity. . a court hearing was held this morning of the victims of the explosion nearly one year ago. joins us live outside the court house to let us know what happened inside. >>reporter: the judge decided to put off the decision if and when this case will go to trial for another 3 weeks. trying to decide the process to move

forward. the judge hearing arguments from both side. the attorneys representing more than 300 victims. they are trying to figure out if one jury will hear the entire case but that could drag on. or whether to do mediation and break apart the liability portion. the plaintiff's attorney does not want this case to go to mediation which he says would keep the facts hidden. >> how could an organization like this allow this injustice to happen for 54 years while at the same time paying themselves executive bonuses to peter darty? how does that happen? >>reporter: so far they have plan slammed the utility because

deaths in 13 states and 8 deaths in puerto rico. . the san francisco animal shelter is making a request for people who find lost dogs. they are experiencing severe dog overcrowding and until they have room, they are asking anyone who picks up a stray dog to register that they found the pet and temporarily house the pets until the shelter has more room. reducing adoption fees 50 percent through september 12th. . today the city of san jose is launching a program for people with licensed pets. dogs and pets can be licensed with no citations, late fees or penalties for missing vaccines. and all san jose residents are required to license their dogs

. >> firefighters in north texas say they have made progress in the battle against the wild fire 100 miles west of dallas. the palo pi nto fire is 50 percent contained. 17 new fires broke out in texas in part because of the hot dry weather. destroyed at least 40 homes. no injuries have been reported. . in the libyan conflict, muammar gaddafi is urging to continue the fight and not to surrender. >> we are not cowards. the libyan people are brave. >> a man claimed to be muammar

gaddafi issued this message today but did not offer clues as to his whereabouts. he is not in that country though his wife and children have already fled. . secretary state hilary clinton is meeting with libyan leaders in parris today. 12th day since forces stormed tripoli. . calling it a case of phobia. 15 people were arrested after a scuffle. one woman argued with a police officer. witnesses say that escalated when the officer pushed her to the ground and several men jumped in to help her. >> four to five people arguing

the senate passed a bill that would allow non-profits to run some of the parks. so far there are two parks that already have operating agreements. parks and rec rehabilitation spokesman say these deals will be complicated but creative solution is needed to save the parks. . veterans are playing a big role in restoring an area. called the veterans green core. veterans are cutting down trees on the slopes where the angora fire burned in 2007. john is among those training in a career in forest service. >> i didn't have a lot of job skills that could transfer over. >> could take another three years to restore angora. the hope is veterans turned foresters can help.

. there is a new tree sitting in berkeley. a man who calls himself moon shadow purged himself in a tree. and a proposal by local businesses to revitalize the park that could include a ban on unlicensed events. he'll stay where he is for at least a week. >> they've cut down trees across the street and i'm afraid they are going to start cutting down trees here. they made a threat last november that they wanted to build a museum and soccer field here. >> moon shadow says police have come by twice a day and police tell us he is trespassing. cutting down trees and build a sports training facility. . be careful if you are planning a day at the beach. national weather service said

watch out for big waves. the beaches that face south are the most vulnerable. the swell is expected to peek tomorrow and saturday with 6 to 10 foot waves. . hawaii is also seeing the high surf. advisories and warnings are in place. some beachfront businesses say they are losing customers because the huge waves are keeping some tourists away. i think that might be mark tamayo. >> usually they are way down there as far as the surf height wise. today, very nice and great to be out there. also nice to be out here in the bay area as well. lingering haze and patchy fog. we will begin the long warmup. we have the fog hugging a good portion of the coast from point rays down.

other patches and fog closer to santa cruz county. forecast story for today. we have the clouds this morning pulling back near the shore line. temperatures near 90. mostly sunny skies. the weekend forecast holiday weekend we will bring in minor cooling but still on the nice side. here's a look at some of the current numbers. santa rosa lower 70s. 12:00 hour already in the 80s for fairfield. cooling we've been talking a lot about that over the past few weeks. cool temperatures for the coast and hot numbers inland. here's the overall trend. high pressure builds in we will see a northerly breeze as we head into early friday morning. warming trend will continue. hottest locations will be approaching the mid possibly upper 90s. but this will pull back near the

coastline. could be approaching the 70 degree mark into friday. if you are heading to the coast, the swells have been on the increase to the south. we do not have high surf warnings or advisory but still somewhat of a concern for south facing beaches. this is for today, tomorrow into the weekend. the swell backs off into sunday. here's forecast showing some fog hugging parts of the coastline and could be patchy fog out there by 3:00 this afternoon. look what happens tomorrow morning, the clouds not a lot out there. maybe a patch or two friday morning. but this is basically the signal that tomorrow will be warmer. mostly sunny skies. today the warmup begins. here's a look at forecast high. santa rosa mid 8 #0z. oakland upper 70s. lower 80s and gilroy right around 91
