what we found out about the threat of a tsunami. >> reporter: a plan to practice their tricks. why a popular skate park is closing. mornings on 2 starts now. good morning. welcome to mornings on 2 i'm dave clark. >> and i'm tory campbell. we begin with a developing story from alaska. a magnitude 6.8 earthquake shook the alaskan coach. and the magnitude was originally set at 7.1. the quake hit three hours ago in a remote area of the eye lappeds that is about a thousand miles from anchorage. it triggered a tsunami morning after one small wave. sirens did sound and some alaskan residents were briefly ordered to evacuate to higher

ground. economists call the latest jobs report alarm lag and it renews fears that the u.s. might slip back into another resession. and taking a live look at the big board, the dow is down 202, the nasdaq also down 44. s&p 500 is down 23. all the annexes down about two percent. and the nation's unemployment rate remained at 9.8% last month and was weakest in a year. the obama administration is already predick what the jobless rate will look like in 2012. coming up at 7:15, we'll go life to our washington d.c. bureau for the economic predictions and a closer look at today's jobless report. 7:01. days after federal investigators slammed pg&g for the san bruno pipeline disaster. they're now under investigation

for another pipeline blast. it almost destroyed a condo. >> reporter: and i want to show you a walk around the condo so you can get an idea of the damage. this is the front door. and this is side door was blown off during this explosion. you can see some of the material that was pulled out of there. if we go around to the back of the home, you can see where the garage door also was blown off and it land in the driveway. all that stuff behind it, that is what happens when the firefighters engage in a fire fight. they pull that stuff out. and if you get an idea of how hot this fire is, i want to point out the fire extinguisher is just basically melted. it gives you an idea of blast and the heat and what must have come out of this townhome. i want to go to the video. we can take you above and throw you down into the roof. fortunately no one was inside the home when the blast happened. the owner told us they left 15

minutes before the blast to head to lunch. this happened 12:30 on wednesday afternoon. but it has raised a lot of questions. it took about 90 minutes and three holes before the pg&g crews could cut off the gas supply to this house. you're looking at a holten feet from the -- ten feet from the site. we have been putting calls into the pg&g people is this morning. we'll let you know when we hear bat and the pictures give you an idea how terrifying it was. and the reports said that several people that heard it all called 911 looking for help trying to figure out where this was coming from. 7:04. police in fairfield are investigating a suspected murder-suicide side. officers responding to a 911 call found the bodies of a man

and woman inside a home in north fairfield yesterday evening. investigators found a gun near the two bodies. early evidence indicates that the man shot and killed the woman and then turned the gun on himself following a heated argument. the tragedy stunned many neighbors that knew the man that died. >> guy was really peaceful guy. always helping neighbors. >> police say that two of the couple's teenage children were inside the home at the time of the shooting, but they were not hurt. a 22-year-old man work as a live-in baby-sitter in sacramento faces child abuse charges for scalding a toddler. he was drunk and put the boy into hot bath water as punishment for his behavior. she found the baby unresponsive

and burned. and the police arrested floors and the child's injuries are serious but his condition has stabilized. wrecking ball will topple a popular skate park in tomorrow land. we'll tell you where demonstratetors are gathering to try to stop the demolition project. >> reporter: it's called the border town skate park located under the mcarthur. this is where a dozen or more skateboarders cammed out night protesting the decision to bulldoze the skate park. it is not a legal park and that means that the skateboarder that's use it are trespassing on state property. this is not the first time that it has been threatened with closure. six years ago they wanted to shut it down. but the city of like and stepped in to lease the property and keep it open. the city declined to renew that less.

last week caltran demolished the waste land skate park just a few blocks away from here. and caltran said that the parks are a liability. but the people that use them say it's a place for them to go to 125eu off the streets and -- to stay off the streets and stay out of trouble. about a dozen or so skateboarders are here under the mcarthur maze. some said they have been using this park since 2004. but the city is in tough financial times and tough for the city of oakland to consider renewing the lease on this place. it is slated to be demolished later today. thank you. it is 7:06. a sacramento dad is trying to shame a thief into returning his son's scooter without going to police. >> it's the thing that i treasure the most. >> father of michael francis

took surveillance video shows the thief canvassing the home before he dashes into the garage and grabs the scooter. he used the scooter for his get away. he posted a sign telling the thief that the surveillance video could soon make its way to police. >> you thought you were sly coming into your garage. you have one day to put the scooter offer the fence. if not returned, i will take the video to the twin rivers 34r50es. >> >> also posted a sign at a busy intersection and across the street from the school. he said that his son worked two summers mowing lawns to raise enough to buy the scooter. it cost more than $500. this is the labor day weekend get away day. and if you'll be traveling west on interstate 80, watch out for your windshield. road resurfacing project in place sard county has increased

a four-day weekend, and it's making it easier for the rest of us that have to work today. if you're driving on nearby 680, it looks good on concord to the creek. and the toll plaza it's noticeably lighter than usual. this is maximum enforcement. and they're putting more officers on the road. and livermoore traffic is looking good. i want to move the maps up here. they cleared a motorcycle accident on the highway. there's still activity on the shoulder near the turnoff let's go to steve. a happy friday. by the coast. a lot of that fog had breaks in it and we have some fog today. visibility could be lousy on highway 1 and maybe clearing one for parts of the coast, but not the entire coast.

i have a lot of 60s. some of that fog may be too sub burn to burn off. it's beginning to thicken up a little bit. sunny and warm. nice to warm over the holiday weekend. but the fog will start to work its way back. so monday and cooler look cooler and saturday should be similar to today, maybe not as hot. the northeast wind is kind of slacking off a little bit. and there's more of a northwest wind. but some of the higher elevations get up around 2,000 feet. so it won't take long to get war. but there's not that northeast. it's more of a westerly component. the oakland airport did report 49 and fairfield 64. so there's some mild conditions and there's some cool ones. the tropical depression of new orleans and missouri -- and

mississippi. that is a slow counsel. it looks like it's going closer to mississippi but it's covering a wide area of the gulf. for us, high pressure aloft. and that means warm to hot conditions. but without that northeast wind, the coast has to deal with a lot of fog. it will be cool on the coast and warmer by the bay and cooler in the inland. and we'll start out a little bit of a cooldown saturday and more pronounced sunday and monday. thick fog. and watch the spots on the coast and bridges. sunny and warmer for many today so we'll go from 60s to 90s. fairfield 95, santa rose, 89, walnut creek 93, 97 brentwood, mid-90s in pleasantton. 60s on the coast. too much fog to get very warm

we're get a closer look now at the newly released august unemployment numbers. we're in the washington d.c. bureau with how the report has republicans taking aim at president obama. >> reporter: the political reaction this morning has been fierce. john boehner and gop presidential candidate mitt romney are saying that these numbers that president obama's policies are not working. take a look at the bottom line. the unemployment rate stays the same at 9.9%. no net jobs were added in august. that is the first time in more than 60 years. the economy has essentially added zero jobs. the bright spots are in health care where 30,000 jobs were added and in mining where about 6,000 jobs were added. manufacturing stayed the same. we have a crew that sat down with the secretary of labor who said that the numbers are unacceptable but the obama administration is going in the

right direction create more jobs. >> i hope and pray that people will understand this labor day weekend that people give thanks for the jobs that they have and for the hope that we all for those people that lost their jobs because we're going to continue to be next to their side to them them find jobs. and we're not going to stop. >> reporter: president obama is set to announce his new strategy to create more jobs next week. democrats are hoping that he'll be announcing another big stimulus plan. 7:16. the federal lawsuit is expected to file a lawsuit against some of the world's largest banks. they change that bank of america, j.p. morgan chase, goldman sanctions and other banks misrepresented the value of mortgage securities sold during the housing bubble. and the government said that

the taxpayers ended up covering the more than $30 billion in bad deals. the stock is down over 7% this morning. defense secretary being criticized about his weekend trips home to carmel valley. since he took over in july, he has reportedly flown home on the weekend, five times. his aides that he's never out of touch and his ranch is equipped with secure video and telephone conferencing in case of an emergency. we're approaching the tenth anniversary of the september 11 terror attacks. several events are planned at the national cathedral in washington. it's being equipped with safety nets. after being damaged in last week's earthquake. and that netting will be installed all the way across the main sanctuary. engineer have been check out

and combing the cathedral looking for any pieces of walls of ceiling that may have been knocked off in the quake. >> they have physically looked at and touched every square inch. >> and no large stones have been found missing anywhere. president obama will speak there on september 11th. mosquito officials have discovered eight more birds infected with west nile virus. the birds were found in central and eastern county. the officials say that 17 birds there have tested positive for west nile so far this year. but there have been no confirmed reports of any people being infected. a labor day tradition continues this weekend but with a big change. the 46th annual mda telethon

but it's mainly fog free. and they said that the fog has burned off there. not much here around angel island. by the coast, you might get a little sun. but i'm keeping the temperatures in 60s. that is not a typo. the oakland airport says 47 and downtown oakland is 57. sanity rosa 49 and 62 in fairfield. they'll be warm to hot today, mid-90s. high pressure means the inland temperatures are warm to hot. so we'll see a wide variety and a widespread of the some of the high and lows. 60s on the coast to 70s and then 80s around the bay. but 90s inland. this does look like the warmest day as we head into the warm holiday weekend. but it looks like the fog wins out and a cooler pattern will take us into sunday and monday. 7:27. finally some closure for a longstanding missing person's case. they've come up with answers in

there's a warning for those that plan to hit the beach this labored day weekend. we're live in san francisco with what you need to know before you head close to the water. >> reporter: good morning. we're at ocean beach. if you look into the water, you see it's a little choppy. mainly this will affect south facing beaches. safer talk -- however talking to officials, they say they're expecting three to four feet swells at south facing beaches. it could happen here. for surfer that's a good thing. for people that don't go to the beach that much, it's going to

oil right now is down about 3% down to $86 a barrel. taking a live look at the big board, the dow down 231. and the s&p 500 down 256789 that is down 2%. carter evans joins us from the nasdaq market site at times square where are investors are probably on edge this morning. >> reporter: yes, not too happy with this report. oil is a double-edge sword but it's a signal that the investors are nervous about the economy. basically, the jobs report is a big goose egg for august saying that our economy added zero jobs. and the private sector added at 17,000 jobs. let me break this down for you over the past 12 months. this time last year we were

losing jobs. we lost 59,000 jobs last august. in february and april we were around 200,000 or more every month. and we kept falling through the summer and here we are at zero now. verizon workers, the 45,000 striking verizon workers they are count in the report. they're counted in the report as unemployed and we know they're back to work. so we know the numbers are skewed a little bit. but when you sad them back in, the number is still really bad. we need to be adding consistently more than 200,000 jobs every month to start making a dent in the unemployment rate. we need to add 150,000 jobs every month to keep up with the population growth. so we're far away from the numbers right now. and this puts more focus on the president's speech next week when he talked to a joint session of congress about jobs. >> that is thursday instead of wednesday. but i wanted to ask you about

volume today. i imagine it's quite light because we're just ahead of the labor day weekend. is that going to add to the volatility? >> reporter: yes. i think we're going to be on the downside most of the day. i was talking with some folks at the nasdaq market intelligence desk. traders generally won't take a position anyway on a friday before a three day weekend. things change so quickly these days. so they don't want to be stuck in anything. you'll see a lot of high frequency trading as we get closer to the closing bell. >> it will be interesting to see what happens on tuesday. it is 7:47. as gas prices increase this labor day weekend, there's a controversial state bill that could add more to what we have to pay at the pump. lawmakers are considering a proposal to give regional agencies the ability to add a gas surcharge as long as local voter as prove it and the money

would go to repair roads. >> fact that we pay the highest gas taxes in the country already, means that there should be sufficient money to do the road maintenance projects. >> if we do nothing, you get that you get a big pothole. >> opponents of the bill twarn could end up in the courts if it ever passes. they say it would violate policys from last year and it must get two-thirds approval in the legislature. gas prices are much higher this labor day than last year. right now the gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is 3.87 that is 77 cents more than a year ago. in san francisco the price is 3.92, and that is up 72 cents. tory, as you were talking, word came in from the associated press that there was another earthquake in

argentina. and we'll get to more details on that. in the meantime, there's a developing story from alaska. this morning magnitude 6. 8 hit the alaskan coast in a remote area about a thousand miles from anchorage. it triggered a tsunami warning but it was canceled. some residents were briefly told evacuate to higher ground. the breaking news that we were telling you about from argentina, a magnitude 6.4 quake hit the north central part of argentina it sent people running out of building into the streets. we have not heard of any injuries or damage. new video to show you this morning of the moment that a quake hit the east coast last tuesday. this is from a high school in virginia right there. the magnitude 5.4 quake

severely damaged the school it may take years before the building is pretty repaired. and the quake also damaged a nuclear power plant. operators said that 25 of 27 spent fuel storage containers actually shifted between two to four inches. no radiation was released. but the nuclear regulartory commission said this is the first time in american history that the containers had been moved by an earthquake. there are no reports of any injury or damage from the largest earthquake to rock the los angeles area in more than a year. this was centered 25 miles northwest of downtown l.a. it was followed by a half dozen aftershocks. and the earthquake was felted

despite economic worries chrysler says it's selling a lot of cars. they say that sales are up 31% over this time last year. general motors posted a 16% sales gain. ford reports sale are up 11 percent. people want smaller and more fuel-efficient cars. we're two weeks away from the release of the star wars trilogy on blu-ray. it includes contare from the directtor george lucas and extended, deleted and alternative scenes. george lucas has made some changes including using computer generated technology. the cal bears football team starts their season tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. and they'll be at candlestick park in san francisco. this year all six of cal's home games will be played in san francisco while the memorial

the house where this fire and the gas leak occurred behind me and you see the damage left behind me by the fire that happened on wednesday. since the fire, there have been multiple investigations ongoing and neighbors told us it sounded like a car crash and some said did sounded like a crack and we were concerned about what caused this and what has been happening since. brian swanson is a spokesperson. what are you doing on your end? >> we're thankful that no one was injured. and the first priority at the time was to make the scene safe. so we arrived on scene and we immediately stopped the flow of gas and began the work to stop the flow of gas and shut off the electricity so the fire department could do their job quickly. >> reporter: let's talk about that. people are talking about how long it took. you say there's a difference between the transmission lines and the main lines?

>> yes to turn off a line in the distribution line would affect thousands of customers and it would take several hours to stop flow of gas to the damaged section of pipeline. it's quicker for us to physically come out and dig holes own stop the flow of gas. >> reporter: and you to that with three holes and three different spots going in. we talk to the neighbors that said they're looking around at their house and saying are we safe. you found six other leaks around the neighborhood. >> our first priority we have a thoroughly leak survey the night of the fire. and we found six other leaks. and we wanted to make repairs immediately. we had a large staff of gas service representatives in the community yesterday that are going door-to-door answering questions and offering appliance checks and gas leak surveys around their home and

happening. noel joins us live from oakland. we're we're at the border town skate park. and you can tell that this is an area that is offlimits to skateboarders. this morning, less than an hour ago, they cut the lock to allow themselves to go inside and they're probably about 50 skateboarders here to protest the planned closure by caltran. take a look inside the skateboard park. we shot this video earlier. we have several dozen people there with signs and skateboarding. and they were here because they were under the impression that caltran was going to bulldoze the skate park starting at 8:00 this morning. this park has been here for several years, six or seven years. and for the last six years it's been under lease by the city of oakland to allow the skateboarders to skate here. but the city of oakland did not renew the lice and now caltran said that the skateboarders are trespassing and it is a
