an explosion ripped through a home. good afternoon. i'm tory campbell. we'll get to the explosion investigation in just a minute. but, first, some breaking news. news chop are 2 is live over the 700 block of bay shore boulevard in san francisco. police say someone burglarized this large antique business there early this morning. about 3:30 a.m., the owner of the business got a call that his alarm had opinion activated. when he showed up, he found that the building had been ransacked. the thieves got away with antiquings, jewelry and artwork. so far, there is no description or arrest. these are live pictures over the scene at the san francisco antique mall. you can see a little bit of activities there. a few cars parked on the side. thinks the 700 block of bay shore boulevard in san francisco. the alarm went off at 3:30 this morning. it looks like some antiques

were stolen. we'll continue to follow the story and have more information for you coming up in the newscast. we are one week from the first anniversary of the san bruno explosion and pg&e is investigating another explosion in a home in kuper kuper cupertino. >> reporter: the ex-please happened here. the gas migrated the home and traveled through to the garage where the gas pooled ant explosion hit with such force it blew off the garage door. >> people in kupertiyo started the day with a courtesy call. do you have to go under the house? >> no, ma'am. >> it's peace of mind for anyone living in the sho dough

of this. a natural gas explosion and fire gut add condo. >> it sounded to me like a car crash. >> reporter: did you smell any gas before thing motion? >> no, there wasn't anything going on, really. it was a normal day. i was working. >> reporter: the force of the explosion blew off the garage door. pg&e is under a spotlight since last year's massive deadly explosion in san bruno. this week, the national transportation safety board released a report about that explosion. given pg&e's history, the ntsb and the california public utilities commission are also taking an interest in what's happened in kuper cuppertino this week. >> we are, thankful that nobody was hurt. we are here to answer any questions or concerns >> reporter: the explosion was caused bay buildup of natural

gas in the garage. an investigation reveals six other leaks. >> it's concerning for us. we don't want to find leaks in our systems. we are committed to getting to the bottom of not only this community but other places. we want to make sure that everybody is safe. >> feels safe now because they checked everything. >> reporter: the door-to-door served two purposes. public safety and public relation. you are taking a live view from the mass cam. you can see that the fire went through the roof of the home. that's because, although pg&e workers went here shortly after the explosion, it took 90 month to shut off the gas line. that's because the works had to drill from three different locations in order to pinch off the lines and stop the flow of gas to this home. reporting live, noelle walker,

ktvu ktvu. michael hoffman's attorney said that his clients posted the ad looking to play out rape faint si. 129 minute video by hoffman and shown in court, he says, shows that the sex was consentual. the three women claim they were raped. a veteran san jose police officer accused of molesting two teenage boys has entered a not guilty plea. 44-year-old patrick durigo is also accused of serving alcohol to the people in his home. this morning, the police told them that the teens had mills represented their age in a

craigslist ad. the police are worried about the possibility of other victims. the next court date is september 15th. the labor department's latest jobs report raising fear that the u.s. could be headed into another recession. the figures out that morning show that the total nonfarm payroll jobs were unchanged for the month of august. that means that any jobs added last months were offset by jobs lost for a net of 0 new jobs. that is the weakest job report in almost a year. the unemployment rate remains at 9.1%. taking a live look at the big board, the numbers have been down all day during the news. they are trickling down to the session lows. the nasdaq is down 3%, down 76. s&p down 33. volume is fairly light, though, ahead of the three-day labor day weekend and bank stocks are taking a pounding with news of an impending lawsuit by the

federal government. federal housing financial officials plan more than a dozen large banks over mortgage quality during the housing collapse. they say that bank of america, gold man sachs and others misrepresented the quality of mortgage packages sent to fanny mae and freddie mac. the lawsuit could be filed within days the u.s. state department issued a worldwide travel alert following september 11th. it does not cite any threats but says that u.s. citizens living or traveling abroad should take precautions because al-qaeda and other terrorist groups could strike anywhere. terrorist groups often hit on significant dates to gain maximum attention. the state department encourages americans to register on its website when out of the country. a crash between two big rigs in oakland this morning has left parts of a freeway connector on ramp shut down. the accident happened about two hours ago in the ramp from

northbound i-880 to westbound i- 80. one driver was hurt and one of the trucks leaked oil or gasoline on the roadway. as you can see, crews are busy cleaning up the leak right now but the highway patrol told us just a few myths ago that both the lanes of the ramp -- a few minutes ago that both the lanes of the ramp should remain closed. they will reopen later. the freeway in emeryville looks fairly heavy, especially the folks driving on the left side of the screen are heading south towards the bay bridge. taking a look in traffic on 101 in san francisco, looks fairly light there. and heading now to 280 in san jose, traffic is very light at the moment. and if you are headed to lake tahoe this weekend, on to 80 freeway, we do have a warning for you. watch out for your windshield. cal tran is resurfacing the road for a two-mile stretch of

highway 880 and it's happening in placer county. this project has increased the number of loose pebbles on the road and the sweepers have cleaned up the number of debring, the number of windshield chips and cracks spiked during this project. many people could be heading to the beach on the holiday weekend but there is a surf advisory in place right now. rosemary arosco is tracking the surf from our weather center. but, first, we go to kraig debro who is in santa cruz with a live look at the surf. >> reporter: i just talked to the lifeguards here. this is main beach, unof two south-facing beaches. it's right next to the boardwalk. businesses and park officials expect thousands this weekend. they expect swells large enough to warn people of the dangers. it's always a little overcast on the boardwalk on friday

morning. that's a santa cruz pattern. it will be sunny and warm. the other unofficial warning is be careful. swells that arose from the south pacific started hitting central and northern california beaches on wednesday. >> the thing about south swells is that there are long lulls in between. so you can go, 10, 15 minutes without any swells and then all of sawed, you get 10, 20 waves. >> reporter: ten days ago, waves from the bigger swells, its bigger brother and sister, were in hawaii during the surf contest. >> we will see a lot of people at the beach taking advantage of the three-day weekend. many of those people are not regular beachgoers are ocean swimmers. >> basically anybody that's about to get in the water down here, we're going to make contact with, make sure they understand the condition, that

their ability is able to handle the surf and the current successfully. >> just as the south swell recede, lifeguard say that a northwest swell will be moving in to take its place. that swell starts hitting area beaches tonight. reporting live in santa cruz, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. let's go to rosemary in the weather center tracking the surf. >> yes, tory. as kraig mentioned, high tide will be coming and we are talking about south-facing beaches. buoy reporting anywhere from 5 to 8 feet but we have had reports of up to 14 feet. some of the top spots seeing waves up to 14 feet and they are expected to get a little higher as we progress towards 2:00. the south and south-facing beaches in addition to the high surf for the weekend, we are talking about a long period swell and that will definitely

impact our beachgoers. rip current remain dangerous for you to be out there swimming. if you are along the beach, they can really catch you off guard. you are always advised to never turn your back to the beach and keep an eye on your children this weekend. >> we'll check back with you for a full forecast. oakland is scheduled to host the cannabis street fair. it is adults only which runs tomorrow through sunday. organizers will block off 14th, 15th and clay street and provide a designated spot in front of city hall where people with a valid medical marijuana card can light up. tickets start at $20. a new turn in the battle between boarders and cal tran. what we learned about the fate of this park and the weather is turning for the weekend an ocean mystery.

it happened on east 23rd street near 25th avenue. it's not clear what led up to the confrontation but it ended shortly after 8:30 a.m. the man came out of the house but an officer needed to use a bean bag weapon to help with the arrest >> in the next 90 minutes, the chp will hold a news conference to update the investigation into the hit-and-run death of a prominent san francisco attorney. a white ford pickup truck hit and killed 40-year-old donald casper when he jogged. a 12,000-dollar reward is big offered for information about the driver. the news conference is set for 1:30 this afternoon. police in fairfield are investigate what they believe was a murder-suicide. officers responded to a 911 call last night in north fairfield and found the bodies of a man and woman inside the home. they also found a gun near the bodies. evidence shows that following a heated argument, the man shot

the woman and then killed himself. news of the killing stunned neighbors. >> the guy was really a peaceful guy, you know, always helping neighbors. >> police say two of the couple's teenage children were inside the home at the time of the shooting but they were not hurt in oakland, demolition plans for a second popular skate park are apparently on hold. dozens of protesters gathered at the border town state park expecting to confront bulldozers. cal tran told us that the demolition has not been scheduled yet. skateboarders told us, they will do whatever busines necessary to protect this state park after the demolition of another one. >> it's an important place for us. we spend years, trying to make

the park. >> cal tran says statey has declined to renew the lease and the park is now a lionel. authorities issued a brief tsunami warning this morning after a magnitude 6.8 earthquake rattled alaska. the quake estimated at 7.1 hit at 2:55 a.m. and was center in the pacific ocean. the tsunami warning set up sirens in the aluthians. but it was quickly canceled. there are no damages of reports for injuries. a new data shows that 27 u.s. nuclear power plant like the north anna reactor in virginia may need seismic upgrade. the threat came into focus when a 5.8 quake shut the plant down. the only damage appears to be only cosmetic but the inspection continues. the nuclear energy regulatory

former baseball star roger clemens returns to federal court in washington, d.c. this morning where, once again, his attorney asked the judge to toss out the case in which he is accused of lying to authorities about steroids use. we just learned moments ago that the judge has rejected that request. his attorneys accused prosecutors of deliberately including testimony the judge had excluded in a video they showed jurors. prosecutors say it was an innocent mistake. it was declared a mills trial. now there will be a retrial in the roger clemens steroids case. a woman who brought a friendly and comforting presence to bay area children has died. >> pop goes the wasel and the fox jumps out of the house.
