the defendant to several of his friends. through december of 2008 and 2009 the defendant had the boys at his residence. provided them alcohol and that's when the alleged acts took place. >> reporter: derigo was aware these kids were minors in high school. the boys testified derigo gave them gift cards and ipods. >> it's going to take a time to go through the computers and flash drives we discovered. >> reporter: derigo's attorney says he will vigorously defend his client. >> it is my expectation he will be exonerated. >> reporter: we first told you about derigo yesterday when we went to his house in gilroy. a young man who appeared to be a teenager answered his door. >> who answered your door yesterday. there was a teenage boy when we went to your resident. >> reporter: derigo has no children. the da's office said police were also surprised to find a

young man at derigo's house. they said they i.d. d.ed him and he checked out, he was 18 years old. and you saw he never responded to our question. parents who are upset about a amusement park worker who had child pornography on their computer are asking that the park stop operation while hall is being investigated because they're concerned that kids could be at risk. coming up next, we'll have a live report on how the city is dealing with that arrest. we're following breaking news happening in the peninsula. it's happening at a company called membrane technologies. our news chopper 2 is now just arriving at the scene. this is in the 1300 block of willow road. the company's name membrane

technologies. you see here there are at least three fire trucks out front and there's hazmat teams. the people are being treated for that exposure. we're trying to get more information but what we do know right now is that there are a number of employees being treated for what is likely a chemical exposure. we were just on the website for membrane. the way we can sort it out for you, they do a lot of separating of chemicals. once we get the department chief from menlo hopefully we can get more information. there's several employees who can be affected at this business. we have a lot of emergency crews, a lot of vehicles in the parking lot right now. we first got word of this into our newsroom. in that time we've been trying to get more people on the phone to bring us more information. but these pictures do definitely tell a lot of story, what's happening at membrane technologies in menlo park in the 1300 block of willow road. i am not sure if this is going

to be impacting traffic in the area. but to give you sort of an idea of where this is, we're talking about near the peninsula landing of the dunbarton bridge. again frank as we look at these pictures we see a lot of hazmat crews here. we're getting more information that unfortunately one person has died. apparently what happened is that they were moving some type of cylinder with methane in it when it exploded. the late word is that at least one person has been killed. one was injured. we're not sure if there are more injuries beyond that. we have confirmed one person dead, one person injured here at membrane technologies. as gasia was mentioning, this was on willow road which is in between highway 101 and el camino real. we just got word of this perhaps a half an hour ago. you can see the emergency crews there on the scene. we're working to get more information.

we're trying to get in touch with the chief who can explain more of what's going on. as soon as we can get him on the phone we'll bring it to him. one employee from membrane technologies which is also known as mtr. one employee there has died, another injured after a cylinder with methane in it exploded. the natural gas blast that ripped a hole in one woman's cupertino home on wednesday has a lot of people concerned. as we found out the problem isn't isolated to her alone. ktvu's patti lee is live with what ktvu is doing right now to resolve this problem. >> right now there are still checking people's home. in the past hour we spoke to the chief fire investigator. the woman smelled gas yesterday morning. she smelled in this area, her front porch. and this is where one of those leaks was confirmed. she didn't say anything until after the fact.

the cause of the natural gas fire that nearly destroyed a condominium in cupertino wednesday is under investigation. but there are indications that the gas leak started sometime wednesday morning. >> she went out to take the dog out for a walk. she came home about 4:00 in the morning. as she was walking up the stairs to her door she did smell some natural gas. >> reporter: fire investigators say the owner of house did not report the leak and left for lunch. that's when the house caught fire. >> because i work from home. and this woman who just lost her home works from home. she is just darn lucky that she decided to go out for lunch. >> reporter: batallion chief says they did not know the house was powered by natural gas until they got home and the door was blown out. they worked to shut down the power at the house, it took more than 90 minutes. but that's what pg & e says

that that's how long it takes to do it right. what concerned them is what was found at the house. six other leaks. >> this is something we take very seriously. >> reporter: pg & e is checking all records where gas leaks were repaired just a couple of months ago. at least one in the same spot were leaks were found two days ago. >> they fixed the gas leak right in front of my house in april. and you know not knowing if they had done it right. it's a little scary. >> reporter: tom vacar is holding pg & e's feet to the fire. he just spoke to the president of operations he joins us live from san francisco, tom. >> reporter: we talk to the man in charge of changing it all and improving it. pipe whether it's plastic or steel has a finite life span. pg & e has to deal with 40,000 miles of it. >> this is the new pg & e.

>> reporter: we met nick -- this afternoon. he is the new ceo of pg & e. he says other leaks were found in the area and repaired. but it seems to keep breaking because it was installed nearly 40 years ago. >> this particular pipe has certain properties to it that make it more brittle over time. >> reporter: modern plastics are far better as a result pg & e is taking on another new vast upgrade program. >> we have about 1600 miles of pre1973 plastic pipe that's similar to what we saw in this particular event. >> reporter: he says dealing with that has become another top priority for him. >> reporter: well the company had replaced pipe in the past and had maintenance procedures in place, we're putting whole new gas integrity programs in place we're going to increase the amount of pipe that we replace. and we're going to increase our

replacement cycles. >> reporter: but does pg & e have the records to find this pipe fast. >> we do have paper based records to show what was installed, when it was installed, where it was installed. >> reporter: and he says the 6,000 feet in the immediate area of today's blasts or this week's blast will be replaced in an expedited basis. tom vacar, ktvu news. this comes in the same week the transportation board report severely criticized pg & e for the san bruno explosion. we first told you here on tuesday that investigators pin the blame squarely on pg & e for that blast. they said the recordkeeping

failed to note the leak in the pipeline. the man accused of murdering four northern california women four decades ago will be represented by a public defender. joseph naso appeared in marin county court. the judge granted his request for a public defender and put off a hearing. naso preliminary hear is now scheduled for november 7th. joseph naso is accused of killing two women in 1977 and 1974. police shot and killed aziz james. officers say the 24-year-old threatened them with a knife after stabbing two friends and a police dog. on wednesday, a 2-1 panel opinion aterm that police did

to florida. advisories are stretching from sunday night all the way to san diego. the waves there today have been spectacular, but they also come with a serious warning. the latest labor department report says that no jobs were added in the month of august. the unemployment rate remained 9.1%. it's the weakest jobs report in nearly a year. stocks took a nose dive after that report came out this morning. fears of another recession triggered a sell off. with the dow losing ground, in all the dow lost 223 points. the nasdaq closed 62 points lower. the american department is taking action against big banks and it's all because of those

san francisco police are trying to track down whoever ransacked the large antique center today.

news chopper 2 was live over the scene at 2:00. the thieves hit the antique mall. the owner received a call that their alarm had been set off. he says the thieves got away with antiques, jewelry. a duck found in a santa clara lake with a blow dart through its head is now in the care of wildlife officials. the duck was spotted on wednesday with a six inch blow gun dart in its head. today an animal rescuers was now able to treat the duck. they hope to be able to return the duck to the wild. with just ten days until the tenth anniversary of the september 11th attacks the fda

over the holiday. aaa says 21.5 million americans will travel 60 miles or more from home this weekend. that's down 2.4 from a year ago. more than 26 million plan to drive to their destination. 2.5 million will fly. wig waves are becoming a big draw to the beaches. rescuers were called to help someone stuck in rough waters just moments ago. >> reporter: we are on steamers lane where we are a part of a big crowd watching the big waves. about an hour ago the harbor police and police and fire department came rushing out here to help out a swimmer who was waving for assistance. and witnesses say he seemed fatigue. it shows how dangerous the waves can be when the current is stronger than people expect. big waves and visitors are

converging on santa cruz. a storm off new zealand are generating a strong swell. >> it's great overcast and the waves are going crazy. >> what do are you thinking as you're watching them? >> it's just a spectacle. it is. >> reporter: police and life guards say the waves aren't scaring people away. they said many visitors are going out on rocks or walking past warning signs to get a better view. a harbor patrol boat rescued three young men yesterday evening at black's point. as one man started to struggle and his friends saved him. >> after they went in to save his friend. they all started to get swept out. >> reporter: at one point today, as waves picked up, officers asked people to move

back. >> i think people under estimate how strong the waves are. >> reporter: and as you can see, robert struggled a bit but did get on a wave and got his ride after all. we'll show you other situations like how it's affecting boats and people at the harbor. >> i'm watching that set behind you. i was down there yesterday and again today. it was clear the swell isn't as big but it remains through the the weekend. it'll still be present. so be careful in all the south facing beaches.

here is how it goes as you look at the forecast for the south swell. we don't have a high surf advisory. the high surf advisories are south. the criteria for a high surf advisory are not being met. what makes this swell nasty. see those red areas there, those represent beaches facing south. that's stinson, that's parts of half-moon bay. and santa cruz. robert handa was standing really right here in santa cruz and that's where they're getting hit the hardest. what makes it dangerous is the lows out there, the lows will go 10, 15 minutes and then it'll be flat like a lake. and then you get a big swell. it's coming down but it's still dangerous on south facing beaches. 83 right new in santa rosa. away from the water where there's no fog, nearly 100 in fairfield today. livermore got close to 100. right now it's 86.

customers of anthem blue cross may find their coverage has changed. the contract between the hospitals and anthem blue cross expired last night. talks are ongoing and blue cross customers still have access to the hospitals including lucielle packered hospitals. deductibles, copayments and preauthorization rules may be different. patients are being asked to check with blue cross to see how they will be affected. the percentage of circumcisions have dropped in the last few years. in them the percentage of circumcisions were 65%, by 2008 it had gone down to 56%. in with your survey it dropped to 47% in 2010.

panetta is raising eyebrows for his visits home. panetta has been home five weekends and several weeks of vacation. a man with firsthand experience handling in air emergency, sullenburger is bringing attention to technology. he says it's critical to train pilots to go quickly from auto pilot to manual when something goes wrong. >> we need to get more practice of hand flying the airport. many times we're required to use the auto pilot.

commission has issued a report saying that more than a quarter of them may need upgrades to make them earthquake safe. the report said 27 plants in the central and eastern united states, could face bigger earthquakes than they were built to withstand. the study began before the quake that triggered japan's earthquake disaster. a fire that has burned through the cajon has evacuated homes. the fire started near victorville in los angeles county and is rapidly burning into the san san bernardino mountains. interstate15 is a key route between los angeles and las vegas. a spare the air alert is in effect today in the bay area. we want to show you live pictures here of the berkeley hills. pretty foggy there in the

berkeley hills. can't even really tell from these pictures. today's warmer temperatures and light winds led to today's alert. so far air quality officials have not declared a spare the air day till tomorrow. we go now to chief meteorologist bill martin who is monitoring our coverage. >> and that is some bad air quality. not good at all. that is fog coming in. that's what's happening right now. it got so hot inland the fog is being sucked through the gate. i can show you on storm tracker 2. you see that fog shooting in, there's yerba buena island. the fog did come out at the beaches but then the fog came rushing back. nearly 100 degrees today in livermore. 99degrees, it's going to be very warm to hot again tomorrow. this way, you get along the coast and it's going to be very similar to what it was today. it's going to be fog, a little

bit of sun at the beaches and temperatures around 60. temperatures tomorrow, 70s and low 80s. slightly cooler for your saturday, slightly cooler again for your sunday. fog is back at the coast. we do have an northeast wind but it's not a lot. it's not enough of a northeast wind to sheer this fog away from the coast. it did a little bit today. it did a little bit yesterday. it will tomorrow. the pressure gradient is mild. normally that northeast gradient would blow that well offshore. the pog is fog is going to be playing tag with the coast. your five day forecast calls for a bit of cooling as we head into the week. i'm not saying cold, i'm saying this low jumps south. the fog reforms and this. you've seen this graphic a bunch this summer. almost all summer you've seen this graphic. that's the way it's going to be all day. tomorrow morning when you wake up. that's the fog foot print. more than you've seen right.

health officials today confirmed two children were diagnosed with a new strain of the swine flu in july and august. one of them had contact with pigs while the other may have been infected by a care giver who had contact with pigs, both have recovered. many bay area high schools are kicking off their new football season tonight as students come to the field, lawmakers are considering

strict new rules to keep them safe. >> glen jones son and another high school student from georgia both died of heat stroke earlier this summer during football practice. now high school athletic officials in georgia are reviewing their guidelines to try to protect players on especially hot and humid days. congress is considering a comprehensive plan to protect and manage. the law would require all coaches across the country to bench any player, any high school player shows signs of a concussion until he is cleared by a doctor. but some believe the efforts on capitol hill are merely political posturing. >> this is just washington politicians seeing something happening and so that they look good saying i'm going to come and i'm going to make sure this never happens again. and that's not what schools
