was in a laboratory. we're told by the fire department that coworkers actually dragged the man out. i'm joined by the fire chief. what happened? >> late this afternoon, we had the report of an explosion here in a light industrial facility in the eastern portion of menlo park. at this point what we know is we had an explosion inside a laboratory. we had one fatality and one injury. and we had to evacuate about 23 other employees of this company which is called membrane technologies. there is no impact, other impact to the other communities. no risk to the city of menlo park and the city of palo alto in terms of the residents that live in this community. what happened inside the lab, there was a man and a woman and what happened? >> i understand that the gentleman who is involved with this who is a scientist now we understand was transferring methane. not sure why the reason for or why he was doing it or what went wrong.

we heard there might have been some type of cylinder failure. at this point the other individual who was in the laboratory who was near the door way was essentially blown out of the door way, clear out of the laboratory and unfortunately the gentleman who was involved with the actual operation succumb do to his injuries. >> 23 of them then self- evacuated and dragged the men out on to the -- outside on to the cement. >> right, as we understand it right now. the other scientists within the laboratory, other parts of the building came in, pulled him out at least into the hall way is what i'm understanding now. the firefighters may have responded into the corridor inside the structure. it is a laboratory we're dealing with. we were initially told it was a warehouse. it's actually a scientist in a lab. the other victim was in the laboratory but near the door. she was blown out of the door way clear of the explosion. she does have some injuries i

understand she has eardrum injuries based upon the over pressure from the explosion. but unfortunately there is one fatality. >> i see a lot of activity behind you as far as firefighters. have they gone inside? >> so the initial crew was inside to perform the extrication and rescue of the victim. they did perform cpr, they were not successful. we have another team, the hazmat team, they're going to go in and make sure the work that the scientists did to make safe the lab is enough to shut down the evacuation. >> the workers who work at this lab are very shaken up over the death of their coworkers and what they witnessed. janine de la vega, ktvu news.

we have more breaking news. a chain reaction accident has closed down highway 12 in both directions. at least five vehicles are involved just west of interstate 880. the highway patrol says there are minor injuries but a major traffic mess. the chp hasish has -- has issued a sig alert and says there is a back up tonight. patti lee has more comments now from pg & e and residents about how the san bruno explosion and aftermath was handled. >> reporter: pg & e workers checked and in some cases double checked homes for potential problems. >> since it happened in the neighborhood it kind of scared us. >> reporter: residents here say they are glad the homeowner who also worked from home happened to leave for lunch when the explosion happened.

>> she is shaken up but she's okay. >> reporter: pg & e tells us no one has reported strange odors in this neighborhood in recent months. but fire investigators say the homeowner smelled gas several hours before the fire started. but did not consider it enough of a problem to report it. >> she went out to walk the dog, she came home about 4:00 in the morning. as she was walking up the stairs to her home, she did smell some natural gas. >> she is just darn lucky that she decided to go out to lunch. >> reporter: hugler lives in another part of the apartment complex where six other gas leaks were found sunday night. >> they came over at midnight that night and started ripping up our whole square. we had like three spots ripped up. >> reporter: pg & e fixed the leak in that same spot in april and wonders if there's a problem in the neighborhood. >> the number of leaks that we have in this community is concerning us. it's a very big concern that we take very seriously. so we're going to get to the bottom of this. >> reporter: you're looking at

fresh asphalt that was covering holes just two hours ago where you could see plastic gas lines underneath. we spoke to the vice president of gas operations for pg & e. he told us that earlier today that these plastic pipes used in this neighborhood do get brittle. and that the company plans to replace 6,000 feet of it very soon. patti lee, ktvu channel 2news. > pg & e spokesperson told us this afternoon that replacing wearing pipelines is their priority. pg & e will step up inspection of pre1973 plastic pipe. a san jose police officer pleaded not guilty today to charges that he molested two teenage boys ages 15 and 17.

investigators claim 44-year-old patrick derigo initially answered a craigslist add from someone claiming to be 18 who it turned out was actually 16 years old. >> teenage boy then introduced the defendant to several of his teenage friends. over the months of december and january 2008 and 2009, the defendant had the boys at his residence in gilroy, provided them alcohol and that's when the alleged acts took place. >> evidence shows derigo was aware that the boys were minors in high school and says there may be other victims as well. derigo's lawyers is promises a rigorous defense. a judge threw out most of the charges of a san francisco lawyer accused of raping three women who responded to his men seeking women ad on craigs list. eric rasmussen was in court and

says pictures of the event raised questions against the victims. >> reporter: we were in court when one of the victims walked in. he say, he looked at me crazy like a demon. she says she answered to these ads on craigslist. >> i asked him did you ever spent the night at my client's house and stay after he left to work. and she said no. and i read the text message and she said, yes i did. >> reporter: the defense even showed video hoffman had recorded of his encountered with the woman and a second alleged victim. judge bruce chan said it was

enough to show the sex was consensual and threw the case out. the judge will now look at another case. >> i think she did go for rough sex and she did not communicate. >> reporter: while hoffman is not out of the hook yesterday, he did get his bond reduced. his lawyer says he could be out this weekend. eric rasmussen. accused serial killer joseph naso reversed his efforts to represent himself. this afternoon a marin county judge granted a request to have an attorney represent him. the judge said that naso will

pay for his own attorney. a white ford pickup truck hit and killed 63-year-old donald casper last night while he was jogging in sonoma county. at a conference this afternoon, the chp asked anyone with information about the accident to please come forward. casper's cousin also took to the podium with a plea to the person behind the wheel. >> at the time of the accident, you may not have realized what happened. now that you've had time to think about the situation, we hope that you will see that the best thing to do would be to turn yourself in. >> reporter: a $12,500 reward is being offered for information that leads toable app arrest. the worse jobs report in nearly a year is adding to concerns that a sluggish recovery could slide back into a recession. the labor department said there were no net jobs added last month. unemployment held steady at 9.1%. the number of people unemployed for 27 weeks or longer fell.

stocks plunged on those bleak job numbers. the dow fell 253 points. nasdaq closed down. another airline has apparently tossed a passenger wearing saggy pants. this time the passenger turns out to be a well known singer from the bay area. billy joe armstrong of green day twitted that he had been kicked off of sáut west because of his sag -- of southwest because of his saggy pants. we have reached out for armstrong for a comment but so far we have not heard back. tomorrow oakland becomes cannabis central. new at 6:00 tonight, jade hernandez live in oakland with

word that lighting up will be legal for some participates. >> reporter: that's right the tents are already up and ready for vendors. off in the distance a huge stage has already been set up in front of oakland city hall. today workers assembled what will house hundreds of booths for the international cannabis and hemp expo. it will take over 6.5 blocks. it begins tomorrow and lasts through sunday. you don't need a cannabis card to get in for anyone 18 years and older. medical marijuana smokers can even light up legally in front of city hall. cannabis supporters tout oakland as the first city in the country to license cannabis. a few years ago oakland passed

a tax and passed a law to allow cannabis businesses. >> it comes to show how far the industry has come that we can have an event in front of oakland city hall that is for the medical cannabis community. for the past few years the expo has been held in the bay view city. major jean quan told us organizers have already consulted for oakland pd. if there's any incidents on saturday, the festival will shutdown. aaa is reporting that 6.6

million people will drive to their destination this holiday week end. aaa says people are still concerned about the economy and gas prices. the average price for a gallon of gas is $3.81 a gallon in california up 8-cents from just a week ago. this is no holiday for the highway patrol, officers will be out in maximum patrol for the labor day weekend looking for drunk drivers. next year more than 1,500 people were arrested for driving under the influence. 21 people were also killed. of those 21 people about 50% may have been alive today had they belted. so we're hoping people will buckle up and drive sober. >> reporter: local law enforcement will be holding dui checkpoints during the long holiday weekend. right now a fire is forcing evacuations and in passing a busy freeway. big waves are hitting santa

dozens of protesters gathered in oakland to protest a skate park that is supposed to be brought down. since the city of oakland declined to extend the league, caltrans says it consideration the park a legal liability and will be torn down. another skate park was torn down last week.

we continue to watch high swells in the bay area. boaters are watching the waves with concerns. >> reporter: people here tell us that at this hour people don't generally come out here in big crowds. but then these aren't ordinary waves and they are attracting visitors and problems. the big waves surging on to the california coast today can be tough to handle. about an hour and a half ago harbor patrols rushed out to help a swimmer. afterward the person seemed safe and in good health. the i incident is one of many situations rescuers are dealing with as a storm in new zealand is bringing up the swells. >> it looks really dangerous to

me today. >> what we're doing is asking people not to cross the barriers. keep a safe distance from the shore. you know and just, enjoy it but be safe. harbor crews have their hands full along with making several rescues yesterday and today. the waves are pounding the harbor that is already in bad shape after the tsunami. many boaters are changing their plans. >> you could be looking out at the ocean, and it could appear flat and calm. and then ten minutes later a big set comes in out of nowhere. and so it's a little deceiving at times. it is those long intervals between waves that are making the next day or two a little unpredictable. live in santa cruz, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. the fire broke out at the

top of the cajon pass on i15 just about 1:00 p.m. this afternoon and it is rapidly burning into the san bernardino national forest. the fire has already burned more than 8,000 acres. people who live in the oak hills area are being told to leave. only one northbound lane is shutdown, i15 is a popular route between los angeles and las vegas. and temperatures in southern california have been very warm and adding to this fire difficulty. temperatures down there have been in the upper 90s and low 100s. for us we had near 100s out at the livermore valley. all of our friends here at the avenue are noted here. this is typical of what we've been seeing this summer. 600,000 people live around that area. maybe 500,000 but they are in the fog right now and they're wearing their puffy jackets on

a night where people in livermore are wearing flip- flops and t-shirts and people are swimming at the beach. it'll be bits of sunshine at the coast like we saw today. then the fog comes back in. so everybody in the avenues if you do want warmth. head out to the east bay or the north bay out toward nevada. you get plenty of sunshine there. 55 in concord, overnight lows. as we go into this bay area weekend we're looking for temperatures to cool slightly. as we mentioned livermore came up on 100 degrees today. upper 90s. tomorrow temperatures trend down a little bit. today it was cool at the coast, hot inland. today it's going to be cool at the coast. very warm inland. temperatures will still be in the low 90s. this is what we've been dealing with all year. the fog footprint in the morning a little more than we've seen. saturday morning looks like a nice day, sunday looks nice. monday looks nice. just a gradual cooling trend as we go into the holiday weekend. so here you go, that's not bad
