hotels and their workers. that's one of the top stories. good morning, i'm tori campbell. we begin with a rally on this labor day involving lingering tensions between workers and management at a couple of hotels in san francisco. we explain what's causing the tensions this time. >> well, this rally and march started at 10:30 this morning and it is still going. we want to show you what's going on behind us. that group of about 150 to 200 people with their picket signs and their flags are standing in front of the grand hyatt hotel in san francisco. this is one of two hotels that people are protesting and workers are asking their supporters to boycott. the other hotel involved here is the hotel frank on geary street. on this labor day, about 150 to 200 workers for both hotels and their supporters took part in this rally. they started out at union square and marched down powell street. workers at the hotel frank no

longer have a contract. meanwhile, workers at the hyatt have been in negotiations for two years and there are two issues holding his contract negotiations up. workers tyhyatt say they are fighting to maintain the right to strike even after a contract has been signed. they are also want to put protections in place to allow other hotel employees to join the union. >> it's a set of hotel bosses who think their workers are machines and commodities rather than people who need to live and breathe and raise their families and have a decent standard of living in order to do a decent job for the guests. so we're all in the same boat. >> a hyatt spokesman says the san francisco hyatt has agreed to give its workers back pay and other concessions under that union contract. those are the two issues we mentioned earlier are the only things keeping both sides from getting a contract finalized. the spokesman says today's march is counterproductive. now in response to that, union

leaders say every other union hotel in san francisco has agreed to some of the things they are fighting for today. they say the hyatt is playing hardball with them and holding out. but again, you are looking at the end of a protest and rally, a march that started at 10:30 in the morning, the people in the distance are protesting the grand hyatt hotel in san francisco and the hotel frank and they're asking their supporters to boycott both hotels. live in san francisco, alley rasmus, channel 2 news. >> thank you. many californians wish they could go back to the original meaning of labor day, a day to celebrate the workforce. right now, nearly one of every eight californians is out of work. the 12% unemployment rate is the second highest in the country. analysts say there have been several job proposals to help boost the state's labor force but the biggest hindrance here is fixing the housing market, which could take a long time. president obama talked about jobs today as part of a labor day visit to detroit.

he spoke to thousands of union members outside general motors world headquarters a few hours ago and hinted that he would unveil a major infrastructure rebuilding project. in his job speech this thursday, he said his proposal will be a test for republican lawmakers. >> we've got roads and bridges across the this country that need rebuilding. we've got private companies with the equipment and the manpower to do the building. we've got more than 1 million unemployed construction workers ready to get dirty right now. >> the president says we just need to get congress on board to help get america's unemployed back on the job but he refrained from saying too much about his proposal until this thursday. former alaska governor sarah palin appeared at a tea party express rally in new hampshire this morning but is keeping supporters guessing about her plans for the election. it's palin's second visit to the critical early nominating

state in three months. the former vice presidential nominee has not declared if she will run for president. some leaders are not seeing any evidence that she is serious about a campaign. republican presidential candidate mitt romy hosted a breakfast. later this afternoon, he will attend the palmetto freedom forum in south carolina. four other g.o.p. candidates are scheduled to speak at the campaign event, but texas governor rick perry has dropped out to deal with serious wildfires in his home state. a new poll of california voters show president obama has a 19-point lead over his closest republican opponents. in the poll, mitt romney and rick perry are tied with 22% support. texas congressman ron paul came in third with 11% and minnesota congresswoman michele bachmann had 10%. if you are interested in

getting a new car, labor day is usually one of the best days to get a deal. kraig debro joins us live from oakland to explain why. good afternoon, kraig. >> we're at honda of oakland on broadway here in oakland. this is where those stories that benefits the retailers and consumers but the fact of the matter is many sources tell us the beginning of labor day istraditionally thetime of year where consumers and retailers benefit as those retailers are trying to get rid of 2011 models to make way for their 2012 models. they use this time of year to move vehicles. the end of the summer marks the transition between the 2011 and 2012 models for many auto makers. that typically means there are deep discounts as manufacturers and dealers make way for new models. in2011 chevy malibu 1lt and ltz topped the list of deeply

discounted cars. the 2011 dodge ram 1500 is third on that list. all three vehicles are expected to yield discounts of at least 15%. and according to a site called auto loan daily, they show how many and what types of vehicles are available on the market right now. remember when the prius was scarce? now, there is a 200% oversupply of priuses. there are other cars hovering around 150% auto supply. it starts today traditionally on labor day, but it lasts until the end of the year as dealers hurry up and try to get rid of all of their 2011 models. kraig debro, channel 2 news. >> thank you. events are already underway to mark the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

this morning, a motorcade traveled to the presidential library in orange county. it's carrying 16 tons of remnants from the world trade center as well as a damaged ground zero fire truck. the wreckage will be on display as part of a week-long remembrance of the 9/11 attacks. and nearly 10 years after the september 11th attacks, we're now seeing what may be the first known video of the moments right after hijacked flight 93 crashed in pennsylvania. it was bound for san francisco with 40 passengers and crew on board. the unidentified man who took this video has died. his family wants to remain anonymous. the fbi and the department of homeland security say terrorists could try another attack close to the 911 anniversary, this time with a small plane. we talked to pilot jenna wells yesterday as she prepped her plane. she is taking the warnings seriously and always watches for anything unusual when she

flies. and she questions anyone she sees just hanging around the airport. >> what's going on, what are you training for, where are you going so if you did hear something suspicious, maybe that would be something you bring up. >> the government says terrorists may try to load a private plane with explosives to carry out an attack. the private pilots like wells say there are a lot of security procedures in place to keep terrorists out of flight schools. a race in the south bay this morning honored the memory of a man from united flight 93. the 10th annual anthony garcia memorial run took place at triangle park. he was one of the 40 people on flight 93. passengers rushed the cockpit to keep the plane from going towards its likely destination in washington. >> every single person on that flight gave their lives for us and for our freedom and it is my hope that no one ever forgets that. >> garcia would have been 72

years old on august 28th. he was returning from a business trip on 9/11 and survived by two daughters and a son as well as his widow. this sunday, ktvu will air a special program called 9/11, a decade of change. we'll have live reports from washington, new york and shanksville, pennsylvania and we'll talk with people who lost loved ones on that day and during the wars in iraq and afghanistan. our live broadcast is at 6:00 p.m. this sunday, september 11th. the u.s. postal service warns it is nearing default and it needs financial help. the postal service has to make a $5.5 billion payment to its workers' healthcare system before the end of the month and the postal service says it may not have the money. so it's asking congress to help. it's asked to close thousands of post offices, lay off 120,000 workers and end saturday mail delivery. it says without some changes, it may have to shut down

in san francisco, a big rig driver making a frozen food delivery underestimated the height of his truck and ended up with major damage to his vehicle. eternal damage was minimal and the driver was not injured. this happened around 4:00 this morning and did not cause any traffic problems. a man in long beach is lucky to be alive after his truck accidentally ended up in the harbor. the driver was trying to launch his boat from the ramp but didn't put the brakes on his truck. the truck and boat trailer both ended up in the water. divers hooked the vehicle to a tow line and pulled it out. no one was hurt. a man wanted in the shooting death of ft. bragg city councilman jerry mellow eluded authorities over

the weekend. he was spotted by sheriff's deputies yesterday morning near his mother's home but he escaped into the woods. they've been searching for bassler since the august 26th killing of mellow. he's also suspected in the killing of land trust worker matthew coleman last month. some chp continues its holiday crackdown on drunk driving. they tell us that so far officers statewide have arrested 1,008 people suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. that's up from 980 for the same period last year. there have been 11 traffic deaths statewide this labor day weekend, up from eight last year. starting tomorrow, marin city buses will stop at a new location while the main transit hub is renovated. the bus stop is on donahue

street. people getting on or off at the marin city stop may have to walk a few extra steps. some residents told ktvu news this morning they have not heard about a change in the bus stop. >> i didn't know about the change. i heard about it first from you. >> would you like to have better notice? >> that would be really cool. >> the half million dollar improvement project was caused by a surge in crime in the area. tomorrow, the issue of who can defend proposition 8 in federal court will go before the california supreme court. supporters of the voter- approved ban on same-sex marriage are suing for the right to defend prop 8 in court. they want to defend the ban because governor jerry brown and the state attorney general have chosen to stay on the sidelines. once this is decided, the case will head back to the federal courts. tropical storm lee is

moving north from the gulf states, leaving behind flooding from rain and damage from tornados. >> reporter: the remnants of lee causing flooding in new orleans and partially fueling wildfires in texas. the system dumping more than a foot of rain on the crescent city and spawning tornados in alabama and mississippi. the mayor of new orleans says breaks in the extreme weather have been helping first responders keep damage to a minimum, but the nasty weather not keeping visitors away. tourism officials say numbers are on par with labor day weekend last year. >> yeah, the storm did cause some cancellations but nothing to cry over. i think the city was relatively in good shake this weekend. as far as new orleans was concerned, it was mainly a rain event. >> reporter: meantime, in texas, wildfires spreading quickly, partly due to the tail end of lee. they're burning thousands of acres and have forced hundreds to evacuate their homes. in an area already suffering

drought conditions and a summer of scorching temperatures, officials say these wildfires are depleting resources already stretched too thin. >> we are trying to keep up with the fire. it's moving faster than they can move vehicles into position to contain them. we had to reposition each time because the fire would overrun us. >> reporter: people in the northeast have their eyes on lee's remnants because additional rain could cause flooding for an already saturated region trying to dry out from irene. in new orleans, fox news. well, thankfully nothing like that locally, a lot of fog and low clouds, there's some rain in the southern state. look at the tropical moisture streaming into southern california from about los angeles, over towards las vegas, also on the deserts. not all of that is reaching the ground but it is helping firefighters a little bit down there, giving some light rain.

a few light showers also up in northeast california. most of it seems to be pushing off. for us, the fog made it rather far inland. already some low 70s, a little consistent pattern there. livermore, concord and fairfield all at 71, fairfield and travis had gusts over 30 miles per hour. 58 san francisco and a lot of 60s in between. san jose at 68, had low clouds there. you can see some of the breaks on parts of the coast, still rather solid on the sonoma coast and the santa cruz coastline but that fog is beginning to burn back. some of that up in the sierra nevada you might keep an eye on the sky but overall, things will be sunny and high pressure's on its way back in. now, today, the fog made it up and over the coastal hills. tomorrow might have to struggle a little bit because high pressure is going to build in and as it does, it will compress it. so inland temps could jump up 10 degrees. today those low clouds dancing between fog and sun on the coast, sunny and breezy. mild around the bay but that

high's going to kick in for two days. today, i don't think there's much of a warming trend but tomorrow, we'll move that right up again. that will be for inland areas. so sunny, cool if you're in that fog, if you get the sun it's not too bad and we'll be warm, fog-sun mix on the coast, especially through the delta and it's out of the west- southwest. 90s into lake county but a lot of 60s and 70s in between with some 80s as you work your way inland. 86 concord, 68 berkeley, 70 oakland, and livermore at 87. 79 for san jose and sunny, a little haze also out there now right now. kind of stagnant conditions. 50s, 60s and 70s coast, in the city and south san francisco and on the peninsula. the big news is we'll get a warmup tuesday, wednesday inland and a low drops in and that's going to cool us down thursday, friday. the question is will it tap into enough moisture to give us what's going through southern california right now which would be some light rain. >> wow. >> maybe on a weekend we'll see. >> all right, thank you.

a wildfire sparked by a deadly plane crash has grown to more than 7 miles. the canyon fire started around 11:30 morning after a small plane crashed just south of bakersfield. one person died in that crash. about 600 firefighters are on the scene right now in 90- degree heat. 650 homes are threatened. evacuations are in place and at least one home was destroyed. a wildfire that burned more than 1,100 acres in san cern deano county -- san bernardino county is contained some 6,7008915 homes were evacuated there but everyone has been allowed back. two mobile homes were destroyed in that fire. the san francisco symphony begins a year-long centennial celebration this wednesday. ♪[ music ] >> the party begins with a gala

at davies symphony call for the first night of the 100th season and it will end 11 months from now next august. they plan to invite well- knownperformers and orchestras from around the world for guest performances. the orchestra will hold a free outdoor concert this thursday at noon. the plaza was fill would bicyclists today, not critical mass. it's the gear to san francisco. the series of races will take place all day ending with a 40- mile pro run at 3:00 p.m. the event has been going on since 1975. at one point, it included the bricks down lombard street. the family that runs a concession stands at san francisco's lake will close up shop today to make way for a new vendor. his grandfather started the

this wednesday, the martinez city council will consider a proposal to advertise city events on an electric billboard. the giant digital display would replace a weathered old billboard south of the bridge. the city would be one of six to eight advertisers and could change its advertising up to 24 times a year. the city would also get 11% of the ad revenue or up to $160,000 a year. labor day means many offices and government buildings are closed. federal and state courts, government offices, schools and
