>> complete bay area news coverage starts right now, this is ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00. good evening i am frank somerville. >> i am julie haener. we begin with breaking news in the east bay a home is under construction. it was under construction and it caught fire this afternoon. that fire quickly spread. ktvu's tom vacar is live with the latest from the scene. tom? >> reporter: the situation is this, we are in a part of the town called the valley. what happened was this house under construction suddenly caught on fire. the cause is unknown. an investigator is on the way, this house is under construction. that fire went up. if you look to the right, you will see another house, there are two that had their roofs damaged as well as the large

oak tree to the right. sustained damage. what happened is, the fire department responded and very quickly brought this blaze under control but the embers were all over the place and as a result they were able to do that. we know two homes have been damaged plus this one. the other homes are on the neighboring street. this happened at 4:22. investigators are on the way and they will know what caused the problem. already some utilities like pg&e on scene trying to do something about getting power on. reporting live, tom vacar, ktvu channel 2 news. there is a troubling new problem tonight involving napa state hospital. in a story only on 2, ktvu's john sasaki is live in napa where he learned hospital keys are missing and may be in the

hands of a patient. >> reporter: this is one more problem for napa state hospital. this one puts the community at risk. a day after they were stolen by patient, a set of hospital keys are still missing. napa state hospital houses hundreds of patients. right now one patient has keys that were taken from a staff member yesterday. she worked to work here. >> should be more careful. i know the police officers have lot on their hands. theperson suspecticide extremely dangerous. >> it puts us at risk. >> police say they could prevent someone from escaping but residents aren't confident.

>> it's creepy. >> raises a big concern. i have kids. you know, i wouldn't want, you know, keys falling in the wrong hands. i hope they would bump up the security. >> reporter: some residents remain more concerned about safety inside the hospital. >> i don't see those keys releasing people into my neighborhood. it's a concern for those within the hospital facility. >> staff are demanding the hospital change all the locks. john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. the group "no justice, no bart" is demanding free bart fairs this thursday night. the protesters held a press conference at civic center bart station. they are angry over the killing of charles hill, bart police

shot him after he threw a knife at him. >> we don't think our fare should be going to people who are beating people up and shooting them without cause. >> protesters will go through the powell station fair gates at 5:00 p.m. on thursday. we spoke to bart, they are aware of the protester's plans but they are not discussing security measures. police are investigating the third homicide in san san francisco's mission district in a week. this shooting happened before 2:30 this morning. officers found a man in his 40s dead near a tree. they say he was shot twice. people say they heard the gun shots. >> terrifying. we heard -- woke up to the shots. you know, just didn't -- i didn't want to move.

i was scared. >> authorities are working to identify the victim. police tell ktvu they do not believe it is connect with two other homicide that happened last tuesday. man hunt for a killer accused of shooting and killing a kitty councilman and they almost caught him yesterday. ktvu's rita williams is live with what is going on in fort bragg. >> reporter: the fog moved in here at the command center and day light may be fading but their search for this man, aaron bassler will be going on around the clock tonight, tomorrow and every day till they catch him. >> apprehension, that's all we want. >> reporter: underscoring the priority of this man hunt the sheriff and the district attorney are here right now. >> the community needs to have

him caught. there are people calling us u -- calling us. >> reporter: this is the eight day. they searched the woods around fort bragg but still haven't found aaron bassler. suspected of killing city councilman jere melo 10 days ago. yesterday two deputies say they spotted aaron bassler near his mother's house in fort bragg and started chasing him but they say he disappeared into the awards, an area he knows better than they do. >> reporter: how did he look? >> clean shaven and shaved head. nothing different than from day one. >> reporter: does that mean somebody may be helping him if he is able to clean up? >> that would be an assumption.

>> reporter: you might remember that aaron bassler was arrested in san francisco two years ago in this incident. throwing packages at the chinese consulate and been arrested for disurbing the piece and drunk driving. his parents say he is mentally ill. authorities just wants to catch him. rita williams, ktvu channel 2 news. labor disputes brought workers into the streets today. >> several hundred workers marched down powell street this morning. employees say there are two sticking points to a new contract. they want the right to strike even after a contract is signed and they want to allow other employees to unionize. >> we got to send a message because they don't want dash we

got three years now. >> a pokes person said the hotel wants nothing more than to sign a contract with employees. workers that hotel also protested over their expired contact. the highest paid workers in the country live in silicon valley. the highest average weekly wage last year was $1,943 or $101,000 a year. over all the average working male made $47,000 a year in 2010. the average woman made $36,000. the u.s. postal service says it is close to defaulting on a huge trust mund payment. they need to pate $5.5 billion by the end of the month. it says it could run out of money to pay its employees next year. they have proposed measures such as ending saturday service

and laying off employees to save money. >> new numbers from the highway patrol show an increase in drunk driving arrests this labor day weekend. 13 people died in traffic accidents from friday through this morning, that's up from 10 last year. officers arrested 1300 drivers on dui. the maximum enforcement period ends at midnight. the coroner released the name of a man killed yesterday. gary hanks was standing outside of his car when a man driving under the influence hit the car and threw him into traffic. another driver also under the influence ran over his body before smashing into the first

car. a passenger is being treated for serious injuries. both suspects have been arrested. 10 years after the 9/11 attacks new vido of the crash of the fourth hijacked airplane. >> remains of a airplane crash. probably had a terrorist bomb on board. blew up. i don't know anything more of that. >> when flight 93 was brought down. his family released the video after his death on the condition he not be identified. one of the passengers who died on night 93 was remembered today. the annual andy garcia fundraiser took place. he was one of 37 passengers and 7 crew member whose died in the

crash. some of whom stormed the pickpit to take control of the plane. she says it's important to remember flight 93. >> every person on that flight gave their lives for us and our freedom it is my hope no one forget that. >> money raised goes to the memorial in pennsylvania. they are planning to rally tomorrow before a hearing on proposition 8. they say they will hold a sit in on the steps of the state building in san francisco at 8:00 a.m. the supreme court is set to hear court over whether they have the standing to defend the band in court. the court will have ninety days to issue a ruling. shaming humans to help the bayers. how some are hoping a wall of shame will make a community do

california unemployment rates stands at 12% but officials say there are signs of progress. the employment development department says the state is doing better than the nation as whole at creating jobs. california added 189,000 jobs over the past year. that's an increase of 1.4%. a report shows unemployment for african americans is at

16.7%. its highest level in 27 years. ktvu's consumer editor tom vacar reports on why the -- reports on why the numbers are so high. >> reporter: labor day was leisurely here. retired policeman sees a lack of jobs, especially among young folks. >> out of the group right here, 50% are unemployed. >> no more entry level jobs for the young people. that's why it's effecting us out of proportion to other groups. >> mike agrees. >> the overall rate is 16.7%. for youth. for african american youth 16- 24, over 30%. >> reporter: part of it is lack of education. >> education is most important.

and without it your pretty much not going to make it. >> reporter: another part, many african american work in the hardest hit professions. >> those sectors that lost jobs, construction, government, manufacturing, those are sectors in which there is significant african american employment. >> reporter: add to that employers' fears. >> people aren't higher. they are scared. they are not sure where the economy is going. >> not just effecting us, effecting everybody. so there is a lot of competition now. >> reporter: tom vacar, ktvu channel 2 news. many candidates for san francisco mayor spent the day seeking support. jeff greeted folks on the streets of the mission district and john sat down with his

volunteers. >> today marks the day when people start thinking about campaigning. >> some individuals think that labor day is really the official kickoff for a mayor's race. for us it was long time ago. >> state senator spent time explaining to voters about the rank choice voting system with the election 9 weeks away. >> we need a stimulus, investment, we need jobs. >> governor jerry brown told a crowd in sacramento today the state could use help from washington to speed the economic recovery. tomorrow he is headed to san diego to meet with business leaders. he is proposing $1 billion in tax breaks to businesses that create jobs in california. >> locals are hoping a wall of shame will get neighbors to do the right thing.
