"mornings on 2" begins right now. well, good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm tori campbell. it's tuesday, september 6th. we begin with an alert sent to san jose state students. someone assaulted a woman on campus. ktvu channel 2 reporter kraig debro is at the school this morning with the warning for students. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning. tori. this happened basically in broad daylight. there was no classes. hardly anyone here. this all started around 9:30 in the morning. according to police, the woman was outside of the administration building when she was approached by a man, possibly 30 to 40 years old. he lured her, their word, into ail co -- their alcove building. once there, the man groped the woman.

the woman got away using a very unique escape route. she took public transportation and then there was a very strange ride. >> he and she rode together -- not together, but they were on the same bus all the way to the other line which ended up at capital and snell where he finally realized shy was going to call the police and he left in an unknown -- she was going to call the police and he left in an unknown direction. >> reporter: and she did call the police. the police called university police. police are asking anyone to call or text. here is a phone number you can call, 408-924-2222. the second number, 40833723919. you beck that number. we are gina talk to police again -- you text that number. we're gonna talk to police and find out how the woman was able to get on the bus, pay for the fare and get away. kraigdy bro, ktvu channel 2

news. >> thank -- kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. now we're getting a better look of what's left of a house from a fire in concord. here's more. >> reporter: flames tore through this large three-story home that's under construction right now. all morning longs we've been -- long we've been watching smoke rising up. the big issue are the embers. many were working their way through a couple of homes nearby. one neighboring house was damaged by the flames last night. some people were even doing whatever they could trying to spray their roofs down with water to keep it from catching fire. the fire started just before 5:00 here on skyler court. the partially built home that initially caught fire is considered a total loss. arson investigators are trying to figure out an exact cause. right now they don't think the fire was intentionally set.

for neighbors around here, it was scare troy watch these embers being blown around the neighborhood. >> it was falling all over. burned my hair and was burning like through my dad's shirt and through my stepmom's shirt. yeah. with all of the big embers, they were catching everything on fire. >> reporter: and fire crews faced a number of serious issues last night. flames were burning near both gas lines and power lines as well. so they had to work around those problems. meantime, neighbors tell us one of the homeowners whose house was damaged, one of the neighboring houses damaged, this person is out of town right now and on vacation and may not even know yet about this fire. but again, arson investigators trying to figure out an exact cause but they do not believe this fire was intentionally set. back to you. 7:04. part of 17th street at clayton in san francisco is still closed right now. this comes after an early- morning hit and run. police say around 2:45, the

driver of a silver car hit some scaffolding that's covering a five-story building. >> veering to the right, probably a drunk driver. they obviously weren't asleep because you are going uphill. you can't drive uphill going to sleep. they took off and caused considerable damage to the car. >> the crash knocked down most of the bottom-floor scaffolding. police say they were concerned the rest would collapse so that led to the street closure. at last check, they say the scaffolding does seem to be secure but one lane is still closed due to the -- due to all of the equipment at the scene. police in san francisco investigating the ambush of a good samaritan who helped. the woman flagged someone down

and she indicated that she needed a jump. when the man came out, five others came around him and beat him and the woman took off. >> i know if i needed help i would really appreciate it if someone helped me. >> police say the injured man drove himself to the hospital. he needed stitches. police continue to search for the men who attacked him and all also -- and also the william who -- woman who tracked him down. coming up at 7:15, we'll have a live report from our washington, d.c. newsroom with what the proposed changes could mean to your mail service. crews in southern california are fighting several wildfires this morning. the catian -- canyon fire east of bakersfield has now burned more than 8600 acres. it's just 10% contained. the fire has destroyed 12 homes and injured two firefighters.

people in 170 homes have been evacuated and hundreds more have been told to prepare to leave. and there is another wildfire in southern california that's burned at least 500 acres. the fire started around 1:00 yesterday afternoon near a barn in santa clarita. fire officials say the fire is burning close to several ranch homes but there are no evacuation orders yet and the fire is 30% contained. 7:06. right now, at least 60 wildfires are still burning this morning across texas. thousands have been evacuated. governor rick perry, in fact, just announced 1,000 homes in texas burned over the labor day weekend. he calls this the worst fire see soon in texas his -- fire season in texas history. coming up we'll have a report live from balstrop, where the fire is still burning.

five-week break. as ktvu's alison burns reports, one of the first orders of business is saving the u.s. postal service. alison? >> reporter: that's right, tori. the postmaster general will testify before a congressional hearing later today with a dire warning that the postal service will run out of money and default as early as next month unless congress goes some radical changes. he wants to cut 120,000 workers, close 3,700 locations, and stop saturday mail delivery. postmaster general patrick donahue wants to pull 500,000 from the generous health and pension programs. some big changes are needed. >> we do not think the postal service could really close, up against -- they are bouncing up to their $15 billion credit

welcome back. 7:22. the third homicide in one week has been reported in san francisco's mission district. now, a ktvu viewer sent us this photo of the crime scene at 16th and guerrero. police say a man in his mid-40s bass shot and killed -- was shot and killed just after 2:00 yesterday morning. police don't believe this was gang-related off is connected to two other homicides. 7:22. traffic this thursday in downtown san francisco could be a real mess. b.a.r.t. protesters are planning what they call a mass action. the group "no justice, no b.a.r.t." gathered at the civic station last night. police looked on to make sure nothing happened.

it is 7:30. in the past 15 minutes we learned that more than 1,000 homes in texas have been destroyed in wildfires in just the last week. right now, at least 60 different fires are burning across the state. reporter chris welch is in bastrop -- bastrop, texas. >> reporter: good morning. things are not looking too great. one of the biggest reasons why, i guess, is because of the wind we saw yesterday. officials are hoping for better fire-fighting conditions today. regardless, this will remain a fire for quite some time. county by county, neighborhood by neighborhood, these wildfires are charring anything that stands in their way. more than 60 fires have erupted in at least 17 counties since the weekend. >> unfortunately, this is -- for us in texas, another set of

few days, it will be dry. that makes people worried about their homes verier in -- ver nervous. >> we just got word that is sounds like more than 1,000 homes have been destroyed. this fire leaving its mark that's without question. officials obviously hoping for better firefighting conditions today. nothing is for kern certain at this point. things could all change. back to you. >> thank you, chris. 7:32. back here at home, today the argument over same-sex marriage here in california heads back to a san francisco courtroom. allie rasmus is there now and has more on what's happening in the state supreme court around the plans for a protest outside. allie? >> reporter: well, that hearing starts at 10:00 this morning. but at 8:00, opponents of proposition 8 plan to gather out here on the courthouse steps. you can see some of those on po -- opponents have already arrived.

they are starting to set up and they have their signs out here. now, at issue in today's hearing is whether supporters of proposition 8 have the right to defend that proposition in court. last summer, u.s. district judge von walker struck proposition 8 down as unconstitutional. cameras were not allowed in the courtroom during that trial but these are sketches from those proceedings. normally when the constitution ailty of the state law is called into question, it's up to the state attorney general to defend the law. but in this case, then-attorney general and kamala harris, have declined to defend proposition 8. so the supporters decided to challenge judge walker's ruling themselves. they went to the 9th circuit court of appeals. but today the supreme court will decide whether those supporters of prop 8 have the right or the legal standing to challenge judge walker's

in bay point, sal? >> that's right. still there on the shoulder. highway 4, although they are making good progress on this. the whole bay area seems to be very slow. we still have a couple of vehicles there -- here. one of them looks damaged on highway 4 it's on the right shoulder. it was in the right lane that's just mixing in with all of the very traffic -- slow traffic. so the whole stretch between antioch and concord is very slow. you can see just how bad that is coming around the corner where it usually gets better. this morning it does not. let's take a look at the 24 commute, westbound. you can see traffic is busy right off the bat from la fayette and 680 is slow nearby. i want to mention the east bay, slow traffic heading south but look at 680 here because of a crash at 84 on the shoulder. we have very slow traffic so if you drive from pleasanton to

is down due to fears of an economic slump. a swiss central bank turned heads after announcing, it will try to keep the suisse franc weak. carter evans is at the nasdaq with this gamble and with europe's growing debt crisis. good morning, carter. >> reporter: hi, tori. that's kind of got the markets all shaken up today, this move by the swiss bank. basically, fixing a minimum price for the franc, suisse, franc, against the euro. so everybody is trying to figure out the full implications of that. in the meantime, let's take a look at the numbers. we started out the day significantly lower. here is a look at the dow. you can see that big drop right at the opening bell. we eased a little bit early on when we got a report showing that the service sector was much better than expected -- expected. and then we continued this

residents want to hear. right now they are dealing with remnants of tropical storm lee. north carolina and georgia are still under a tornado watch. flash flood warnings are in effect from the southern end of the appalachians to new england. tornado, strong winds and heavy rains have damaged several hundred homes across georgia. up to 4 inches of rain is expected to fall this morning. meanwhile, the tax bayer bill for hurricane irene will reach at least 2 -- at least 1.5 billion. irene caused damage from north carolina to maine. the white house released the preliminary budget estimate yesterday. now, that total does not include the cost to individuals or insurance companies. indiana lists say -- independent analysts, say. we're also talking about high-paying careers that are in demand right now.

company. last week, solyndra abruptly announced it was filing for bankruptcy and laying off its 1100 employees. the workers claim the company violated the law that we dwyer -- that requires 60 days' notice before laying off more than 50 people solyndra says they were actively seeking financing which makes them an exam shunt to the law. a man left his 1-year-old son in the hot car while he drank at a bar. police arrested him at the iron springs pub and brewery yesterday afternoon. police say witnesses saw the boy inside the car and then confronted the father. he then rolled town the windows -- windows a little before going back into the car. police say the child did not need who be -- need to be hospitalized. a proposed policy may make it hadder to buy alcohol in san jose. now, the proposal would restrict new liquor licenses

the california supreme court building. as you mentioned, already supporters and opponents of california's gay marriage ban proposition 8 have gathered in front of the courthouse buildings. off to the left, these are the opponents of california's gay ban. i would estimate there's probably 50 to 75 people in that group. supporters of proposition 8 have interest signs out -- their signs out as well. the issue up for debate in front of the california supreme court today has nothing to do with marriage. at issue is whether the supporters of a proposition have the right to defend that

proposition in court. last summer, von walker struck down proposition 8 as unconstitutional. normally, when the constitution ailty of the state law is called into question, it's up to the state attorney general to defend the law. but the past two district attorneys declined to do that. they both said judge waller -- walker's ruling should stand and will not challenge his decision. now it's up to the supreme court to find out whether the supporters of this proposition have the right or the legal standing to appeal governor's ruling. >> when the governor and attorney general refuse to step up and defend and protect the constitution, the proponents have a right to stand in their shoes and defend the initiative, as they always have in california law. >> in order to keep litigating a lawsuit, somebody has to be

bakersfield, it's burned more than 8600 acres. it's only 10% contained. 12 homes are destroyed, two firefighters have been hurst. residents in 170 homes have been evacuated and hundreds of more have been told get ready to leave. another southern california wildfire has already burned at least 500 ache eches. this one started in santa clarita yesterday, near a barn. it's burning -- it's burning closer to ranch houses. there are no evacuation orders yet. this fire is 30% contained. mareky casey black elementary school was built last year but the school never opened because of low enrollment. this month, the district officials will decide whether to open the campus for the next academic year or lease it out. the all right -- all right.

students at san jose state, a woman claims she was assaulted on campus. ktvu channel 2 reporter kraig debro is at the school this morning with the warning to students. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, tori. that woman was the victim of a sexual crime. that's sadly not unusual. it started yesterday around 9:30 in front of the administration building. the woman told police she was sitting there with a man when a man in his 30s or 40s approached her. he coaxed her over here. the bord police used was "-- the word police used was" lured." the woman eventually goes to a bus stop to get away but this order -- in order to go to that bus area, she waits for the bus, presumably pays her fare, gets on the bus. the suspect does exactly the same thing. she calls police when the bus
