good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. hundreds of bank of america branches could close. we have the impact on customers and employees. alex? >> it could be a big blow. bank of americas could be closing all over the country. this is a bank of america branch here in oakland this morning. this all has to do with recent moves made by the ceo, a shake-up at the company. the charlotte, north carolina, bank splitting into two units. one will be serving consumers, the other commercial clients. the b of a announced layoffs

later this month. analysts believe it could signal more reductions, as much as 30,000 being let go. 600 branches may be closed down across the country. one woman said she's not all that worried. >> actually, i'll be honest. i never use a branch. it doesn't affect me. i go into the atm regularly. i do online banking and everything else through the atm. >> reporter: so the latest moves could involve layoffs potentially and the closure of roughly b of a branches across the country. i put in calls with media relations with the company but have not heard back from the people. we will trito get more information for you. we're live in oakland, alex

forced to make an emergency landing in colorado. it had mechanical problems from san francisco to new york city yesterday afternoon. the jet landed safely and the 111 passengers were put up in colorado hotels. a break in the case of missing nursing student michelle le. a childhood frand is accuse -- friend is accused of her death. police arrested 27-year-old giselle esteban for murder at her union city home yesterday morning. le vanished may 27th while walking to her car in the parking garage. dna links esteban to the case. court documents indicate esteban has a history of troubling behavior. we'll have more at 7:30.

san francisco police warning cab drivers about a gunman who has been robbing tax sis. there's been seven robberies since july 17th. in three have them the robber asked the driver to drop hem off at the same intersection. in all cases he pulled off some kind of weapon. he also held a knife to the cab driver's throat. the man is described as an african-american about 5'10", about 220 pounds. as we move from that, we'll check on traffic. sal's watching our commute. it's early. how is it going? >> it's early. we have people who are already out there on president roads -- the roads. watch for the commutes. northbound 20 up to highway 17. this morning's commute in the

good morning. a lot more clouds. it will be cooler, 60s, 70s, low 90s, but more of a sea breeze. the labor department just announced that the number of people filing new unemployment claims went up slightly last week.

414,000 americans filed for first time jobless benefits. that's up 2,000 from the week before that may be a sign employers are not significantly increasing layoffs. however, they're not hiring either. economists say first time clime -- claims need to stay below 375,000. some job seekers in western new york are turning to prayer to find a job. this who normally be a healing service at the blessed sacrament parish. last night the priest focused on those looking for jobs and collected resumes in a basket for a special blessing. >> it's always turn people back to their faith. >> now the father encouraged everyone to rely on their faith during these tough times. president obama's poll

evidence of a super nova in space last night will be visible on earth tonight and tomorrow night. this galaxy is only 21 million plight years away. astronomers said that's like income our backyard. it's the closest super nova in 25 years. you can see light exploding in the big dipper constellation. the best time to look is after sunset and when the moon is visible. in california firefighters have stopped the forward progress of a wildfire in calaveras county. the blaze is burning in an area between the towns of an andreas and mountain ranch.

it's 14% contained. the fire came close to about six homes. in kern county evacuation orders have been lifted as firefighters get a handle on it. it's more than 80% contained and burned 15,000 acres. 12 homes and outbuildings have been lost. returning residents are told to check their homes for gas leaks and hazards. investigators start searching for flight recorders in the remains of that jet that crashed in moscow yesterday. members of the russian hockey team were onboard. 43 people were killed including a recent draft pick of the san

a suspect arrested for the murder of missing nursing student michelle le is due in court this afternoon.

tara moriarty will tell us of the possible conflict between le and the suspect. >> reporter: there's word that giselle esteban is pregnant. she is now in jail but is expected to make her arraignment has 2:00 this afternoon. police made public her arraignment yesterday at a press conference after arresting esteban at her union county condo. her former boyfriend said esteban had a history of disability. her ex-boyfriend filed restraining order saying he is was stalking him and his mother. esteban reportedly told friends she hated le and believed le had come between her and the child's father. >> it seems surreal like i can't believe it, like a movie.

i'm not exactly scared. i feel safe knowing that something has been resolved. >> reporter: le's blood was found in her abandoned car. cell phone records and other dna evidence found in esteban's home linked her to the crime. again, esteban is pregnant but no word on who the father is. investigator -- there is a reward for le's return. we're live in hayward, i'm tara moriarty. >> overnight the police in fairfield started looking for a suspect in a triple shooting.

a gunman inside a black sedan opened fire on the three victims while they were standing outside an apartment building. the victims then drove themselves to the hospital in one car. they're all expected to survive. investigators say this was not a random shooting, but at the same time they don't believe it is tide to gangs. police are searching for a burglar who threw a brick through a window and stole a child. a priest said the suspect may have been at the suspect earlier in the day. he returned later when the church was empty. police have not released a detailed description of the thief. the city of san francisco will be monitoring more state pin mate. the public safety realignment program shifts supervision from the state it local districts.

what's it like this morning. >> reporter: we know the fire is 30% contained. we could learn in the next few hours that that number rises. we're here at the convention center in downtown bastrop. you've heard the saying the worst of times often bring out the best in people. that's what we're seeing. all of this water was donated by people throughout the greater austin area. you see these handwritten cards and letters? these were written by children staying at a local middle school. firefighters from across the country have responded to the fire, including out in california. this one will touch your heart strings. this here is a list of homes that keeps being updated by

natural disasters of a billion dollars or more. natural disasters before hurricane eye reason totaled $35 billion. 2011 is already in the top five among the costliest years. meteorologists are tracking three major storms barreling towards the east coast. the strongest is hurricane katia. the category one storm is in the atlantic. large swells could reach bermuda and the u.s. and tropical storm nate has formed in the gulf of mexico. mexico's eastern coast is under a storm warning. in pennsylvania, flooding brought on by tropical storm lee, that's prompting evacuations of residents in the northeastern part of the state

taking a live look at the big boompletd number -- board. numbers have turned around. not as good as analysts had expected. however, there's good news coming out of europe, escalating the hardline talk on greece today. that is helping scone certain about the european debt crisis. the dow is up 32. s&p is up one and a half. the european central bank announced it will leave banks unchanged. it kept the benchmark interest

rate at 1 1/2%. they say the ongoing european debt crisis is cutting the risk of inflation. in washington, d.c. the special congressional super committee meets for the first time. the committee has until november 23rd to find ways to cut $1.3 trillion. if they cannot agree on a plan or if congress does not approve a plan by december 23rd, automatic cuts would kick in affecting hundreds of federal programs. the committee includes six republicans and six democrats. one of the items the congressional committee will start deciding to cut is the nation's transportation spending. california has already approved $9 billion in funding.

in the current economic climate, even supporters believe federal money will dry up. the house homeland security is looking into how well the u.s. is protected today 10 years after the september 11th attack. the witnesses scheduled to testify include lee hamilton, the former vis chairman of the 9/11 commission and tom ridge, the first homeland security secretary. the 10th anniversary of the september 11th attacks is actually boosting the sales of american flags. a homeowner in redwood city swapped out his old flag for a brand-new one. he is one of many who plan to fly the flag. in belmont, they have seen flag sales triple. some of the popular flag sizes sold out. one customer said she loves what the flag represents.

attack at candlestick park. >> reporter: we're getting word about a pretty big fight in the parking lot. it happened just after the kickoff. witnesses said two groups of fans of opposing teams started yelling at each other. police said when officers arrived, a 26-year-old man was found beaten unconscious. witnesses identified one man as the attacker. the bay city news said the man has admitted to the attack. this comes after the -- there was a fight during the preseasons game august 20th. if you're headed to the game between the niners and seahawks at the sticks you will see extra security. that's because the fbi will
