energy. good afternoon. i'm tory campbell. this morning, the fbi began an investigation at fremont's solarindra plant which, last month, announced it was shutting down and declaring bankruptcy. alex is will to let us know what is going on. >> reporter: agents shall still inside the solyndra plant executing search warrants and gathering evidence. they won't say what they are looking for but we do know that this investigation involves the department of energy. before it exhibit under, this solar company received a huge chunk of stimulus money from the government. more trouble for solyydra. fbi agents moved in on the plant. >> they executed a warrant, showed us the warrant. we are cooperating with them. >> reporter: the fbi won't say what triggered this investigation only that they

are working with the department of energy's inspector general's office. two years ago, the company received a $500 million grant from the federal government. agents tell us they could be here for quite some time. >> based on the size of this location, that will determine how long the search takes. going to the fact that this one location is so large, it's going to take a while. >> reporter: the f b. says fbi says that they are searching several of solyndra's facilities. it was manufacturing solar pams until next week when it announced it was folding: it's a shock. we have a fantastic group of people working here. we are all sad to see how things have transpired. >> reporter: even though they have fired for bankruptcy, there is still a so-called wind down team of employees staying on here until the company shuts down. many of those remaining workers

were stopped at the front door by the fbi this morning. agents will be here through the end of the day today collecting evidence. i put in a call to the department of energy in washington, d.c. early this morning. their spokes person confirmed they are involved in this investigation but they would not confirm any specifics. >> thank you, alex. word of solyndra's trouble comes two months after it was announced a big contract with the stadium that hosts the seattle seahawks' nfl team. the company shows this picture of on the roof of what is is now century link stadium. which before was qwest in a story you will see only on 2, we have learned that police have made an arrest on a

serious attack on a football player on treasure island this summer. tara moriarty joins us live from san francisco where she got this information exclusively for ktvu >> reporter: that's right. this is a major break in the case and the news that mark mcgovern's family has been waiting for month. we are here at the hospital where mcgovern's family has been recuperating. san francisco police say they have arrested 26-year-old pat power of half moon bay. he is charged with felony battery accused of hitting mcgovern in an area where there was not a field of play. >> it was a combination of evidence and statement from witnesses and anonymous tips, things like that, that led the officers and inspectors into looking further. they department give didn't

give up -- they didn't give up on this case. >> reporter: mcgovern was in a medically interviewed induced coma. doctors say he is making tremendous progress, walk, talking, even kicking a football. the mcgovern family did issue a statement that, just a short time ago. they say, we are glad to hear of pat howard's arrest and that the city of san francisco will seek justice on mark's behalf. there is no place for this sort of conduct in sports and hopefully this will set an example and prevent others from being injured like our mark. we will continue to follow this investigation and we'll let you know when there is another report. >> thank you, tara a jet that took off from sfo was forced to make an emergency landing. an airline spokesman says that the virgin american flight had

mechanical problems touring a cross country trip. the airbus a 319 landed safety in grand junction, colorado. the 111 passengers were put up in hotel while alternate travel plans were made. the labor department just announced that the number of people filing new unemployment claims went up slightly last week. 440,000 americans filed for first-time jobless benefits up 2000 from the week before. it may be a sign that employers are not significantly increasing layoffs but they are not hiring either. economists say that first-time claims need to stay below 375,000 to indicate job growth. still a few hours before president obama unveils his job strategy and republicans are already criticizing his plan. the president is expected to pitch at least $300 billion in proposals. some of that money could come from taxes on wealthier americans.

workers at grant hyatt and hyatt regency walked off the job. a ktvu photographer recorded this video of a picket line. workers have been without a contract since august 2009. they are upset about benefits, wages and what they call dangerous working conditions. >> you know, low pay. everything else is sky high and we are still stuck with the last couple of years, we have not gotten any contract yes. >> we said yes to the exact same deal that local 2 signed with the other hotels, including wage and back pay. so, we don't know what it is that is an economic issue here. this protest is part of a nationwide week long strike. a union rep tells us there will be 4-hour picket lines through midnight on wednesday. in just a few hours, b.a.r.t. will be hit with another

protest. ktvu's kraig debro joins us live from san francisco to explain the new strategy and how commuters are reacting to it. >> new strategy but same subject. people say they're going to be out here protesting at the powell street station at 4:30 to protest b.a.r.t. shooting date dating back to oscar grant. and this tactic has people upset. >> that's a shame to do it the way they are doing it because they are hurting everybody. they are not pushing their point across by doing it >> reporter: protest in july and august led to idle trains in the middle of rus hour. i had to take a cab for 60 bucks. are they going to give me 60 bucks? this time, they are going in front of fare money, not

b.a.r.t. and san francisco police are investigating a stabbing during this morning's commute in san francisco. a man was stabbed as he was nearly the turn style at the balboa park station around 6:00 a.m. the map was taken to san francisco general hospital. there is no report on his condition. the woman accused of murdering nursing student michele le is scheduled to appear in court this afternoon in hayward. police arrested le's childhood

friend, 26-year-oldgiselle estaban at her home today. she is due for arraignment at 2:00. evidence leads police to believe that le is dead. >> we hope that she has empathy to bring her back. she has been going on three months ago, living. our family's life stopped three months ago. >> reporter: the search search will resume in a rural area and september 16th and 17th and a man opened fire on three victims standing outside an amount. building. the victims drove themselves to the hospital in one car.

to the cathedral after last month's earthquake. calmed the concert of hope, sunday's anniversary event will now be held at the memorial center. and president obama will be attending. and many plan to fly the flag. judy's flag city has seen flag sales triple in recent weeks. some popular flag sizes are even sold out. one customer said she loves when the flag recommends. >> that's an important anniversary. i think we have to rededicate ourselves to supporting our country. workers at the flag store also answer a lot of questions about flag etiquette. flags are not supposed to touch the ground or drape a vehicle.

if they are torn, they must be taken down. there will be a special program that will air from new york, shanksville, pennsylvania and the pentagon. ktvu went back to the crest more neighborhood to see what it looks like now. we found construction crews busy bidding homes. one neighbor showed us her backyard which overlooks the now exposed canyon. she says that loud noises still cause her to panic but that the quiet of the neighborhood is also unsettling. seven homes are now under construction. six are in the final permitting process and 12 others are in the planning stages. the owners of 13 lots are still undecided. flooding from the remnants of tropical storm lee is prompting mandatory evacuations of more than 100,000 residents in the northeastern part of pennsylvania. the flood has sent numerous

rivers over their banks. in some areas, emergency crews are using boats to get to some people trapped in the rising flood waters. this is areas still recovering from hurricane irene. some rivers are expected to crest just below record levels set in 1972. back in the bay area, just a little bit of a change. you will notice a dropoff in the temperatures compared to yesterday. clear skies, a bit of some haze, apparently san jose in the upper 60s. you take a look at the fog, you can show you where the fog is right now, hugging a portion of the coast line. the beaches will remain on the chilly side. san francisco right now, only in the upper 50s. beginning to recover, inland towards fair field, con kert. livermore right now in the upper 70s. forecast headlines for today,

we do have this. coastal fog, more numbers inland. clearing skies, a one-day warmup as you head into friday. a few extra high clouds and temperatures will be cooling off especially for the second half of the weekend. today, most areas coming down about five to ten degrees from yesterday's highs. a little bit more of a strong onshore breeze. temperatures inland will be approaching upper 80s to right around 90 degrees. this air afterlow pressure will be drifting to -- towards southern california, actually backing out and retrograding. that will be a key factor this weekend that will generate a few high clouds, possibility of a fewer syria thunderstorms and temperatures cooling off into the 80s especially as we do head into the sunday. here is the forecast models. once gwen, into saturday. and once again these high clouds could be moving into the bay area from the south. as far as the short term. we have the fog out there near the coast at 3:00 this

a live look at the big board on wall street. the dow remains down as they head into the final hour of trading. some disappointments about ben bernanke's statement saying that the central will spare no effort to spur regrowth but offered no details. the dow down 93. nasdaq down 18. s&p down 112. bank of america is responding to a report that it plans to close 600 bank branches. a spokesman says that back in march, b of a announced plans to close 10% of its branches out of 500. a bank spokesman says there are no new bank closings planned apart from those originally announced. executives are meeting today and tomorrow to review the strategy to cut cost and streamline operations. one unit would handle commercial clients. the other would handle consumers. so far, 3000 layoffs are scheduled to take place later this month there is good news to report about the theft of a little girl's walker from
