5:19 pm
mountainous area. remember, i had the -- that's a deeper marine layer, a fat layer of fog and it's getting up enough to cool temperatures off today, some areas as much as 10 degrees. these are the current temperatures. highs tomorrow will be in the mid-90s but not as cool as today, even though today was definitely warm. dense coastal fog comes back. the -- as it warms up that fog is going to shrink. we will have lessened air quality, increased heat and increased fire danger. right along the ocean beaches, it's there. you will have that 50 degrees in santa rose a, 51 in nap a. 58. the days are getting shorter.

5:22 pm
still running on schedule. we'll have an update coming up.
5:23 pm
5:24 pm
back now to our breaking news. want to take you live to the powell street station. this is the level where you buy the tickets and from what we understand the protesters are trying to block the turnstile. there are a number of protesters on hand. obviously you can see a lot of
5:25 pm
media and police in riot gear. she's on the phone now, jana what's going on. >> yes, actually there's also a photographer here in this crowd. [ indiscernible ] right now police have closed in. they have bar police in kind of a here [ indiscernible ] the protesters did block off one of the turnstiles for a few minutes and police established a line in front of the turnstile so none of the passengers -- so they could get through. they have since pushed the protesters toward the middle and have urged anyone who is not -- to leave the area. it looks like they have about 3 dozen or so police who are here and then protesters who have been kind of coralled into the center of the lobby area. >> jana is the station still
5:26 pm
open right now? are trains and the hewny muny cars still running? >> yes, the cars. muny has not been affected by this so far. they have concentrated on the far side of the lobby area and basically like i said, they have closed off the turnstiles for about 5 minutes or so and then they ended up being able to move the protesters toward the center. that's where everyone is right now. i'm actually standing in the middle of it where the main organizer is talking. i'm surrounded by members of our tactical team. they have tried to establish a perimeter now. i'm hearing some others, possibly some protesters who have broken off into a sprinter group just outside and they are closing the gates right now, frank, of the powell station. they are closing the gates to the powell street station. so there are some people who
5:27 pm
are outside and they have actually closed the entrance. >> jana, we see that right now. are you still inside, are you still in the middle. it happens to be a heavy police present? are you still inside and how many protesters are there compared to police? >> it's very difficult to say. at one point it looked like -- [ indiscernible ] looked like there were more police officers than people protesting but that number has since grown. it's difficult to say because there are some people that are standing on the borders and it wasn't clear whether they were -- or not. i tell you there are a lot of people with camera phones up here and also members of the [ indiscernible ] group who are taking video. it's not clear how this will progress but they have closed the gates to the [ indiscernible ] >> so they have closed that gate that we're looking at right now. have they closed other gates and have they essentially shut down the powell street station
5:28 pm
or can people come in other parts and buy tickets? >> i'm actually [ indiscernible ] i don't know if you can hear me because they are yelling all around. maybe if i scoot over a little bit and take a look and see if they actually have -- looks like there are people who are coming into the westfield center area, at least i'm seeing some people there. so there are people who are traveling [ indiscernible ] to view the travelers and then a lot of the protesters. actually i take that back now. i can get a better view of the westfield center and it looks like most of the -- have been closed. >> and the people we see outside the fence, it's hard to tell. are those protesters as well or are those people kind of down there watching? >> i'm not sure exactly what you are seeing. are you seeing the people
5:29 pm
outside or inside? >> we're seeing the people that they first closed that gate. there are a lot of people behind that gate they have just shut. i'm just wondering are those protesters, people come to watch, are those passengers wondering what's going on? >> actually, i do see a lot of people outside on the steps. if you go past the closed gate there is a core group -- the estimate here about [ indiscernible ] organizer who is leading the [ indiscernible ] so now they are chanting let's go, let's go. there are i would say probably 15, possibly 20 protesters. >> all right, so we see jana, right in the middle of this where these protesters are and just to recap the powell street station has been essentially
5:30 pm
shut down. they closed the gates. we want to show you outside now to david stephenson. from your vantage point outside the gates, who are you seeing? >> i'm seeing the gate that was closed about 5 minutes ago. it's fully shut. that was just before a number of officers came rushing down in riot gears. they all took the escalate or down, stood outside the entrance gate and then went in. there's another dozen standing upstairs as well, too. but there are dozens and dozens of tourists and locals standing by looking on curious about what's going on out here. we could hear the echos of the let them go chant. there's still people exiting the station as well, taking their time to leave, but again you can hear that shouting that's going on. it's drawing a big crowd outside. >> you say they are chanting
5:31 pm
let them go. who are they talking about? >> the presumetion is that the people being held inside by the gate. we have heard some people chanting that outside as well. the picture takes the story and the police presence in there that has restricted access inside powell street bart station right now. >> david, we're looking inside, there is a massive police presence. we're looking down there, seems to be more police officers than some people. what are you seeing outside in terms of police presence and people being diverted because it's affecting people trying to get home on bart. >> i'm seeing about a dozen san francisco officers standing at the top of the escalate or leading down to the plaza. they are surrounded by just a group of curious onlookers. i have not seen too many people trying to go downstairs to gain access to powell street
5:32 pm
station. there are a few dozen people coming up but so far there doesn't seem to be much of a demand for people trying to get in this entrance. it's actually fairly low tension right now. the police are standing guard at the gate that is mostly closed but so far there doesn't seem to be much hostility from people trying to travel and those inside. >> do we still have jana on the phone? >> yes, i'm here. >> i'm sorry, i lost you. >> we keep seeing that scene inside with a lot of police and it almost looks like they are surround ago group of people. have those people been arrested? >> no, but just a moment ago one of the -- i don't know if he was a lieutenant or one of the officials with bart police said you can leave, the station
5:33 pm
is closed, leave or else you will be arrested so he did make that announcement. there are some people mingling around who are passengers and trying to make their way, they are being escorted by people in yellow vests with bart staff, both -- up to the market street exit or over to other connections. so there are still some passengers still down here. but this -- that you mentioned, more than the one in here but it seems like maybe some of them have left. i also want to mention that i am standing next to somebody who is the department of homeland security in a police uniform so it is a mix of different people out here. >> so here's a live look at the bart station. we want to thank jana from inside and david outside. we want to continue to follow this to see if this protest has
5:34 pm
been halted because of the tactics and we'll bring you back. and obviously one of the concerns here is that the protesters will leave the station and then march down to another station. we have seen in the past move down to powell, then montgomery. we're going to keep following this because that could presumeably happen this evening. but the headline at this hour, the bart station is closed. we've got reporters fanned out. we will keep you posted on this throughout this newscast and. moving on, hot dry weather is a threat during this fire season but so are lightning storms. in gilmore tonight where firefighters are gearing up what could be a busy weekend, robert. >> the kind of of day we've seen today shows us how much firefighters have to worry about. what you are seeing here is the remains of a 5-acre fire put out during the past hour.
5:35 pm
we're going to show you pictures pictures we got as we first arrived. burned down two small structures but fortunately no one was injured. it was just one of several incidents cal fire is on today. monitoring lightning storms that they say is heading toward the bay area. >> cal fire also tacked a small fire in the hills this morning with all the resources it could and kept the fire from spreading to nearby homes. relieved homeowners say they are flayed glad. >> we need to think about. i was rushing home. >> there's fire trucks and we live right up against the hill, so of course i'm worried about that. >> but while cal fire tries to swarm every fire in the area it also makes it tough to plan for the electrical storms that are coming, especially lightning
5:36 pm
strikes. are watching lightning activity in northern california and nevada. on their mon monitors a small blue dot signifies a lightning strike. >> we're looking at a total of about 197 strikes with only one of those being a positive strike. the forecast was that it would circle back and then come down back through california, possibly the east bay hills. >> most lightning strikes don't happen near a road way, near good access. they tend to be in remote locations where we have to hike in resource and in some cases even drop by air. >> and those resources spread thin because the fire unit sent 5 engines and a bulldozer trying to fight this other fire. live in gill roy,. all right. we want to bring back our chief
5:37 pm
meteorologist. what are your models showing? >> last night, we talked about it. there is a slight chance for showers in the bay area but it is slight. let's go to live storm tracker 2 and here we are thursday night. look at the sierra nevada. go through time a little bit. there we are into friday afternoon. nothing there. there's a fire weather watch and then look at saturday. that's your best shot right there. let's look at where the warnings are as we head into friday and saturday. no warning for the bay area. not even a fire watch. the big concern you see that with cal fire is that it is the time of year you don't want any lightning strikes at all. but again, there is a chance of this but it is not a slam dunk. right now friday looks okay. saturday may be your best bet. i'm back here in 10 hints.
