6:00 pm
it is a stand off between protesters and police going on right now at the powell street b.a.r.t. station in downtown san francisco. we have crews inside the station and aboveground monitoring the tense situation. there is new information just coming in. good evening everyone i'm frank somerville. >> and i'm julie haener. we want to show you a live look at downtown san francisco. we just learned 25 people have been detained during the protest. also police have been asking the media to leave this is why our camera man is now filming through the bars of the station in order to give you a look on what's going on inside. the powell station is closed to b.a.r.t. trains right now but all other stations in the area are open. we've been watching this unfold for the last hour or so. jana katsuyama has been right in the middle of this protest literally since it began.
6:01 pm
jana are things starting to calm down or does the situation appear to be getting worse. >> reporter: frank i'm sorry, they just took our press passes and they're about 12 or 50 people who are still in the circle. my photographer allen leon and i are standing next to a team of san francisco police and b.a.r.t. police officers. we are being told that all the media will have to leave. they have taken our press passes and they are processing release forms and they are being told they are going to be making arrests of anybody who is still there. i have counted 50 officers that are down here. also some in security uniforms. right now it's very quiet down here. at different points we saw people being arrested and being taken away i would say about six or so. there's about six people who were taken away in handcuffs and i'm just staying with the
6:02 pm
photographer right now as we're being processed. >> are you getting any indication -- >> jana are you getting any indication until how long until the station will reopen? >> no i do not. right now everything has been shut down. as you can see the gates are closed both on this side and on the west field shopping center sight and the entrance to market street. so right now it's very calm but they haven't made an indication as to what the next step will be or how long the station will be closed down. >> so right now does look like the officers have this situation under control. there's no more chanting and it looks fairly orderly right now just has to be processed. >> yes, there was a little bit of pushing and shoving at different points. as we told you at 5:00, they had surrounded some protesters and we were caught in the middle of that. there was a lot of chanting and they started taking people away one by one. at least for right now, the protesters say they were very
6:03 pm
upset about this. they were told the protesters were going to be allowed to from protest outside of the gates and now they are being taken away. there's a police officer here from b.a.r.t. who is waiting to escort us away from the protesters, and they're just finishing some paper work and i imagine that we are probably going to be, pulled outside of the station as they have done with most of the other media teams. >> all right, jana. thanks very much. we want to go now to david stevenson. he is live above the powell street station where a crowd has gathered. they are watching the protest. what is it like above the street. >> you can see some of the dozens of people who are been up here for at least a dozen hours. taking a look down below you can see some of the people who are gathered outside the gates including our camera man as well taking a look at what's going on inside the gates.
6:04 pm
they have been standing there watching police detain protesters there. we have video that shows what it was like inside. that shows the number of people chanting, the number of police that were there. at one point we saw more than two dozen san francisco officers head down the escalator and join b.a.r.t. police to assist with this protest. i am joined with no justice no b.a.r.t., kelly. you said earlier today this would be a spare the fair day in which you would try to encourage people to block the turnstiles to assure people have free fare. >> that was the plan. that's what we announced on monday. frankly we didn't even get that far. before protesters arrived b.a.r.t. had shut down almost every entrance of the b.a.r.t. with the exception of this one
6:05 pm
here holiday plaza. after police arrived, more and more people came. they blocked people in and about 25 people have been arrested. >> the number of police outnumbered the number of protesters at the scene. >> at times that really is what it seems. >> reporter: how successful is this protest, this is the sixth major protest that's gone on since the wake of that july 3rd shooting, that man that threatened police with a knife. you believe the public is getting the message that you're trying to get out, about police brutality. >> i think this shows what the b.a.r.t. police are trying to do, and what police authorities are willing to do to shut down any sort of peaceful protest. the only thing that happened here today is that people shouted and had banners in an
6:06 pm
area that was already designated as a protest zone. we've said since we announced this protest on monday that it was never our intention to shut down the b.a.r.t., shut down this station or shut down service in any way. our only intention was to shut down the fare gates and to give everybody a ride for free. save that 3:50 on 3. $3.50 on the way back to the bay. >> reporter: we're going to take a look at the people chanting, let them go, let them go. the shouting continues, and it likely will be for the next several hours. david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. >> just briefly here.
6:07 pm
what about the traffic. is the protest affecting that? >> reporter: we're going to pan out so you see the buses. this protest has not spilled out into the streets as have previous protests in previous weeks. traffic is moving along slowly but smoothly on the street and sidewalks despite the number of gawkers and police that are out here right now. >> we're going to keep looking at our live camera through the bars. media has been asked to stay behind the bars here. you're looking underground at the powell street station. we learned about another arrest. that would make 26. we're trying to get that confirmed that there's been 26 arrests associated with this protest. it began around 5:00 this evening. our jana katsuyama told us 50 officers, b.a.r.t. police, san francisco police and homeland security officers are downstairs here processing the protesters here doing the papers on whether or not these people are being arrested. s in the situation at the

6:10 pm
inspector general and fbi investigation. the new remaining employees here were shocked. >> there's a wind down team of some where around 100 people who have been working on it. >> reporter: is this just a bad bed on the government's part? or would evidence of fraud make solyndra an exceptance of government bail outs. >> is there going to be a winner or loser in banks or does it take it offshore where it's made cheaper. you will see this in the long run, not who gets the money back but where do the jobs in
6:11 pm
fact, go. >> reporter: make no mistake, other countries are happy to bet on new technology jobs. >> let's be clear. there's other governments around the world doing that all the time. >> reporter: if the fbi doesn't find a smoking gun, solyndra will be a victim of other countries manufacturing high tech products. 2acres of solar panels are being packed. i was inside when president obama did his facebook live event. but for oprah there was no press allowed so we waited out here on the sidewalk with a few
6:12 pm
dedicated fans. two people, three if you count little luis gonzalez were outside facebook where we arrive. >> he's my cousin's baby, i watch him on thursday. it's thursday, so we're here to see oprah. >> reporter: crystal and perige waited on the sidewalk, hoping to get a sidewalk. she thought she saw oprah arrive. >> an suv. >> tinted windows? >> tinted windows. >> reporter: oprah was here doing an interview web cast to potentially millions of the web cast live viewers. >> all day long i've been walking through the offices going, i'm in facebook. >> reporter: oprah winfrey has more than 6 million facebook fans, far more fans than her network that has struggled to gain ratings. a topic she touched on. >> she said she was -- she was scared for the first time in her life. you know doing the show for 25

years, she had a handle of it. but going forward with the network she was terrified. >> reporter: by the time the web cast ended, the fans outside had multiplied but not by much. eager to see her, they waited for hours. >> i just love oprah. >> reporter: for those fans it was certainly worth the wait. they received an photograph when oprah winfrey stopped before she left facebook. oprah winfrey in additional to this event is meeting with silican leaders to boost traffic to her website. in palo alto, ken pritchett, ktvu news. we are monitoring the b.a.r.t. protest in san francisco. another live look here as police are making arrests after protesters crowded into the powell street station earlier this evening and shut it down. more live coverage when we come back. a cooldown today, in ten minutes i'm coming back. i'm going to show you how much it's going to heat up for your friday.
