well good morning, to you. welcome to friday, september 9th i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. let's start with steve paulson and a look at weather. how does it look? >> a lot of fog out there right now. some of the fog has come a little bit lower and reduced visibility if you have clear skies that is a good thing. we will have warmer temperatures today. i want to show you the weekend. it does look like changes will be developing. a little warmer today and a push on saturday. sunday may be mostly cloudy. we'll talk about that and a cooling trend coming up. here is sal. good morning, san mateo bridge traffic that looks pretty good heading out to the high-rise and over to the peninsula. i do see lights out there. they just disappeared. hopefully we are in good shape here. let's move along to the bay bridge incline. getting up into treasure aland area that looks good. let's go back to the desk. we begin with double trouble for bart.

vandals hit one san francisco station just hours after the latest protest at another station. tara moriarty is in san francisco this morning and has word on whether or not the vandalism is tied to the demonstration. >> reporter: these vandals came in with hammers and actually smashed some of the machines that you see behind me. this is one that was out of service when we first arrived. it appears the displayed screen has been fixed. this happened last night when protestors stormed in just before 10:00. police say 20-30 people rushed into the glen park station dressed in hoodies. they posted graffiti, they struck all seven clipper card readers. we still are not sure if they were part of a splinter group from that earlier prom test. >> move back. move back. >> reporter: just after 5:00 last night this one the scene at the powell street station.

bart officials said they would allow protests as long as they happened in the free speech area outside of the fare gates but police shut down the station for two hours and arrested 30 people. >> once the circle was closed, the station was also closed. we could not maintain a safe atmosphere with the station open and with pay trents walking around. >> demonstration organizers from no justice no bart said they wanted to test the free speech limitations but bart said the protest interfered with its ability to operate trains. there is another demonstration scheduled for next monday night at the civic center station. live in san francisco i'm tom p.m.. here in the bay area bart sin creasing security ahead of the 9/11 -- bart is increasing security ahead of the 9/11 anniversary. this increase security comes even though there is no specific threat targeting the bay area. >> our time 6:03. southern california travelers trying to get here to the bay

area. you are facing delays this morning due to the problems caused by that huge power outage. two southwest airlines flights going from san diego to oakland and san jose have been canceled. ktvu kraig debro live at sfo right now to give us all the details on what is going on from there. >> reporter: dave, three flights set to leave san diego and arrive at sfo have been canceled. three arriving flights have been canceled. are not sure if they are connected to the power outage. it will make it difficult for airlines to catch up. the people you see here actually waiting for the southwest ticket counter to open at 4:30 this morning. many of the same people are trying to get to san diego. some of them came last night. supposed to take flights at 4:30 and 7:30. they were told the flights were canceled. jus this morning virgin southwest and united canceled

flights. airport spokesperson says the power doesn't knock out the planes of the control tower but it does knock out many other necessities. >> we're in the same situation. we have two main field generators and portable backup generators. we can only operate varied essential services. so planes can get in and out, but we cannot load and unload. we cannot check people on and off the plane. that is the problem. >> reporter: that massive power outage was caused when a utility worker in arizona triggered what turned out to be a domino effect. you have parts of arizona but mexico as well as southern california without power. we learned this morning that the san diego power company had about 1.4 million homes are now back online. the airports are still trying to catch up. not only sfo but oakland airport as well. reporting live at sfo i'm kraig

debro. a new terror threat timed for this weekend's tenth anniversary of the september 11 attacks. we want to take you to live to ground zero in new york. u.s. counterterrorism officials say they have uncovered intelligence indicating al qaeda has plans to use car bombs to blow up bridges or tunnels in new york or washington, d.c.. now coming up at 6:15 we'll have a live report from our washington, d.c. newsroom with the increased security pressures in place in response to that threat. back here in the bay area today the city of san bruno is marking a sad anniversary. one year ago today the peninsula city became the scene of the worst pipeline in history. it exploded killing eight people and destroying dozens of homes. they will honor the victims

with a public memorial at skyline college. demonstrators will hold a rally outside pg&e's head quarters on biel street in san francisco. they will mourn the victims while expressing their outrage over pg&e's response to the disaster. just last week the national transportation safety board pointed a finger of blame directly at pg&e. an apparent domestic dispute in vacaville turned deadly. police rushed to a home on cambridge drive. that is where they found a woman shot to death. we were told a man barricaded himself inside the home but he eventually gave up. he's no custody. thousands of people are expected to fill the fort bragg high school football stadium in memory of a popular local leader. they will be attending the council memorial for jerry melo. he was shot and killed two

weeks ago at a rugged forest in fort bragg. bassler killed melo in a effort to protect his illegal opium field. golden gate transit will launch sunday express bus service. sunday services now being added because of the buses popularity. the bus trip will make seven trips leave from santa rosa and making stops in petaluma, nevada, and sausalito before heading into san francisco. there will be eight trips back from san francisco. hopefully everything is going smoothly on the road. how does it look? >> things usually start off very well dave and pam. the traffic is moving along very nicely if you are driving on interstate 880 in oakland. no majors problems here. let's go toot to another

picture here and take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. there is a little bit of a backup in the cash lanes. if you are driving in antioch highway 4 getting busier now. traffic is slowing down to 25 miles an hour there. pittsburgh and bay point looking good. let's go to steve. thank you. happy friday everyone. we do have low clouds around. the coast has not cleared out. there is a hint of a north wind out in the valley. higher elevations are two degrees warms than 24 hours ago. what are you telling us? some of the forecast models really warm things up. i don't see it here. fog low clouds are clear. some location are clear. fog will be retreating back by non. this afternoon it will be warmer inulin.

some 90s and maybe even 102 up toward clear lake and ukiah. the tropical clouds up in the sierra, nebraska will mayplay -- 51 in santa rosa this morning. 56 livermore. same for concord and fairfield. redwood says don't forget me. they are 59 as well. a west win to 14 at travis. and a west, southwest santa rosa. that is not a warm direction for them. the tropical clown cover will -- cloud cover will continue to drift up. as it goes to the west it will tap into some of that moisture. i think low to mid 90s. all eyes focus on that low as it settled back. to give us a partly sunny and partly cloudy weekend.

book. this shows kids in indonesia reading the comic book called i found the meaning of jihad. the 42-year-old helps train muslim before announcing terrorism. he hopes it will teach children in the middle east to avoid the mistakes he made. ktvu alison burns live in our washington, d.c. newsroom with the details of reported threats aimed at new york city and washington. allison. >> reporter: that is right the fbi and americas intelligent agencies are on the chase. they are looking for information about what is being called a credible but uncorroborated threat. this plot includes targeting new york and washington, d.c. with either a car or truck bomb. a handful of people may have come into the u.s. in recent

days to carry out the attack. one of them may be a u.s. citizen. the information comes from a credible source out of pakistan. it has not been confirmed. here's what walnut creek congressman is saying about it. >> maybe it's a rumor. maybe there is nothing to it. if there is something to it than we know. we know two or three days ahead of it. we can then take action. >> reporter: now the fbi has sent a bulletin to 18,000 law enforcement agencies across the country. saying the plot could be intended to avenge the death of osama bin laden. and it also reportedly warns about other possible attacks involving small firearms, home made bombs, or poison. reporting live alison burns. the chairman of yahoo may now be in trouble. a new york investment firm that owns more than 5% of yahoo stocks is asking roy bostock an

no problems on highway 17. texas firefighters are launching a major attack from the arraign the wild fires that have raged for days now. later today a converted d.c. tent from southern california will be brought in to fight the

flames. it's cab of -- it's capable of dropping 7,000 gallons on the fire. full containment is still several days away. parts of northern california are under a red flag warning this morning. forecasters say low humidity and gusty winds will make for dangerous conditions. now overnight firefighters in solano county were busy putting out a fire near interstate 680 and gold hill road. that started just after midnight. investigators believe it may have started because someone was shooting off flairs in the area. firefighters did have that fire out in less than an hour. a $5,000 reward is being offered in oakland for information in a robbery and shooting at a safeway store. this photo from oakland police show the robber in the black sweatshirt there pointing a gun at the clerk. it happened saturday morning at the rock ridge safeway on college and claremont. oakland police say the man fired his gun at a security

guard but missed. the man is described as 5'7" and in his early 20s. our time now 6:25. there is a new opera inspired by a man that died while saving others in the world trade center on september 11th. it's called heart of the soldier. it premiers tomorrow night at the san francisco opera. it's about the life of rick riscorla the head of security for morgan stanley. when the first hijacked plane crashed into the north tower he ignored orders to stay put. he started evacuating employees. >> i read this book and i was immediately drawn to the scenes of bravery, heroism, courage, a sense of what does it mean to be an american? >> by the time the second plane hit the south tower all but a

killing eight people and destroying dozens of homes. claudine wong is in san bruno. >> reporter: dave, memorials will be planned for today and remembrances. one year later you look at a home like this being built behind me. you see signs of people moving forward. trying to make this neighborhood home again. then you look next to it. take a lack at the empty -- take a lock at the empty lot. you are reminded how long the road to recovery can be. then you meet resident maria bar that walked through here with tears in her eyes. she walks predawn every day. today she was out walking again. remembering and mourning. she said she couldn't sleep last night and one year does not take the terror away she felt as she ran for her life. >> the horror of it. imagine going to a movie and imagining hell. nothing in your psychy knows to

relate. the explosion and the sounds and the sight. i could see eight stories high of flames and smoke. the horrible wind it created. it was horrible. the heat i couldn't breathe. >> reporter: today maria said she will remember people like jessica morales that ran for her life but didn't survive the explosion. jessica was one of eight people that died that day and who will be remembered in a memorial tonight. the memorial will not actually happen in this neighborhood. it will happen at nearby skyline college. there are signs upright now trying to keep people away from here. this will be an emotional day. they want to give this neighborhood a little space so they can grieve in private. live here in san bruno claudine wong. the power is back on this morning for the 1.4 million people in the san diego area after that massive power

outage. but as ktvu kraig debro tells us from sfo airline passengers are still facing delays. >> reporter: still facing delays and according to san diego power company they have 700,000 people back online this morning. the version america has got about a handful of flights going to san diego on any given day. there is a flight schedule leaves at noon today. that is scheduled to leave on time. so far the people that were supposed to fly to san diego yesterday they are flying out today. people flying into sfo from san diego are again being hit with delays. all because of something that started in arizona. >> i got here about 3:30. my flight was supposed to leave at 6:00 last night. i got a cell phone message saying the flight was going to take off at 7:30. and then they made an announcement all flights were canceled due to a power outage. >> reporter: many of the people lined up at the southwest

ticket counter such as pamela. second time at the airport in two days. three flights scheduled to arrive from san diego are canceled. we cannot say if it's connected to yesterday's outage. it will make it difficult for airlines to catch up. passenger that lives in san diego says she's been getting updates from her friend on facebook. >> lights are out. power is out everywhere. and you know time went on and got dark a lot more people were you know making interesting comments about what they were doing to fill their time. had lots of pictures of my friends and kids and doing stuff they normally wouldn't do. it's kind of neat to see what they would do without all the power and technology. although everybody was still on facebook. >> reporter: the outage forced the cancellation of 11 flights inbound and outbound was alcadessed when a maintenance

worker in -- out bound was caused when a maintenance worker pulled something he wasn't supposed to. 6:35. the woman charged with killing nursing student michelle le is due in court today. we still do not show if she will show up. 27-year-old union city woman is seven months pregnant. her doctors have to first give her approval where she can appear in court. she is accused of killing michelle le her former high school friend who's body has not been found. investigators say esteban blamed le for ruining her relationship with her boyfriend. ktvu was the first to tell you that police arrested pat power of half-moon bay yesterday. he's accused of marking mark

mcgovern unconscious. he is recovering well now from his brain injury. today's fundraiser will go toward his rehabilitation. it begins at 6:00 p.m. at st. stevens church in san francisco. hundreds of people are now setting out on a long walk today to help fight breast cancer. take a look at that. this is a live picture from cal palace in daly city where the opening ceremony for the susan g. komen walk is getting under way. they will walk for three days and cover 60 miles through san francisco. all participants there must raise $2300 for breast cancer in order to take part. our time 6:36. well this weekend as you know the tenth anniversary of the september 11th attacks memorial services will be held remembering the 3,000 people killed in new york, the pentagon, and in shanksville, pennsylvania. our reporter patricia wu is in new york to tell us about event there is and the stepped up

security measures in place responding to a new terror threat. patricia. >> reporter: good morning, dave. yes, new york city police commissioner ray kelly spoke to us this morning about the extra precautions. they include increased check points at the bridges and tunnels and increased plain close officers and officer with radiation detectors. most will be happening at the 9/11 plaza which you see behind me. as you might imagine security was already extremely tight as we are expecting victims families and two presidents. worst terror attack ever on american soil. and in two cities targeted ten years ago there will be extra caution. >> as we approach the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the nytd, fbi, and entire intelligence community has been on heightened alert.

>> reporter: federal officials cited a credible but unconfirmed terror threat with new york city and washington as possible targets and citizens were urged to stay alert. >> citizens should know we are taking all the appropriate steps necessary to insure their safety. >> reporter: with a close eye on security from the pentagon to shanksville, pennsylvania to right here in lower manhattan sunday's tenth anniversary will be marked with reflection and remembrance. >> part of remembering is to honor. >> reporter: victim's families have gathered at ground zero each year will mark the opening of a 9/11 memorial this time. glass important as the hem -- >> as important as the memorial is we owe the victims much more than ceremonies and symbolism. >> reporter: for rudy guliani the anniversary will be a reminder of how in just one day things changed forever. >> biggest fear that i have is

are running two degrees warmer. 50s on the temps. 56 livermore and concord. santa rosa is down to 51. oakland 55 degrees. key for the weekend is going to be a low right there. phase with another low and settle off santa barbara. somewhere around there. we start off billion thick coast and bay fog. warming up low to mid 90s inland. think 60s and 70s and 80s closer to the coast and bay. the key and the tough challenging part of the weekend will be on sunday as we get partly cloudy skies. a few showers are possible wrapping back around. so temperatures today go from the 50s and 60s to 100. clear lake and ukiah will be hot. 91 fairfield. 91 danville. and 80 in san jose to 90 for morgan hill. sunnyvale 79. 77 wood side. the city at 64. south san francisco near 70.
