who fought to rebuild that neighborhood are coming together to mark the tragedy. hello everyone i'm heather holmes in tonight for julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. a memorial is set to begin in just moments. this is a look where families and neighbors are gathering to remember those lost. there's an estimated 500 people or so at hand. the workers who have spent months clearing the wreckage at san bruno came together with crestmoore neighbors today for a private memorial. for some that brought back a flood of memories. >> i was having some flash backs, yeah. of the fire. >> my neighbors aren't back yet. their homes reasoned built yet. this just happened. even though it was a year ago.

>> some residents are skipping tonight's memorial. they plan to stay home tonight and reflect privately. what we want to do now is go back to these live pictures of this memorial that's set to begin momentarily. we're going to continue to follow this memorial and come back as more activity begins there including the bag pipes which are expected to begin at some point in the next minutes. coming up in the year since the explosion, pg & e has been under a microscope so what exactly has changed since then. are gas pipelines safer than they were a year ago? noel walker joins us now, she spoke to protesters who said no. >> some things have changed and this is one of them. over the summer pg & e began sending letters to people who live here in the san bruno neighborhood. who live within 200 feet of a national gas transmission line. it's a part of the a season to

make the system more transparent. >> we're here to remember and mourn and also to make sure this does not happen again in another community. >> reporter: there's still anger one year after the natural gas line pipeline explosion. investigators continue their investigation into whether pg & e had any criminal wrong doing, the transportation board is already pointing a finger at pg & e and the public utilities commission that oversees it. overs are demanding change -- others are commanding change. >> nobody can take back what happened, but what we can do is a change that will reassure customers that will never happen again. >> reporter: that reassurance may be siting in your mailbox right now. pg & e is sending these letters

to anyone who lives within 200 feet of a transmission line. it >> it is wrong headed to somehow exempt the oldest pipelines in the country from any kind of safety regulation. >> reporter: now pg & e won't wouldn't go on camera today but did release a statement stating, we are committed for the long term to the community. police have quartened off the

remembering the eight people who died, one year ago in that san bruno pipeline explosion. you will recall several others were very seriously injured as well. you can see the crowd there estimated as around 500 or so. there's going to be a very pointiant moment. at 6:09 when the explosion occurred, they are going to ring bells and we're going to go back to that at 6:09. she was a very bright golf star. tonight she is being remembered as the investigation surrounding her death continues. >> reporter: i am standing on the backside of what is called fremont plaza. it's a small, nice kind of standard looking strip mall.

this is the spot where the body of the former cal golfer diane quan was found. flowers are now on the site and the investigation is well underway. diane quan once owned the title woman's amateur champion of california. john web coached quan. it was here where she earned all american honors. >> beautiful swing, everything she had was natural. i watched the whole hayward tournament and she just went through them. >> reporter: a passer by found quan's body on the back lot of the plaza behind a barnes and noble. >> we found her close to her vehicle which is a 2008 honda civic. she was wearing a white t-shirt and gray sweat pants. >> reporter: fremont police have classified the 21-year- old's death as suspicious. >> this those cases we take it to the highest degree and investigate it as a homicide

initially until we were able to determine exactly what occurred. at this point we just don't know. >> reporter: quan received a golf tournament to cal but stopped competing after a year and a half. her coach released a statement. she was a fierce competitor while still being a gracious sportswoman. >> i coached two people that i am very close to. lamar odom who is in basketball and her. the woman accused of

killing missing nursing student michelle le today made her first court appearance. gizelle esteban was supposed to enter a plea instead the 27- year-old delayed entering a plea until she has time to speak to her attorney. esteban is seven months pregnant and accused of killing le in late may. le's family spoke outside the courtroom after that hearing. >> we don't want to say anything that's too sensitive to the case. our focus is still to bring her home. we can't push that point any further. it's our number one -- we still want her back. >> reporter: esteban is expected back in court monday morning. we want to go back now to a very touching moment as bells are ringing for each of the eight victims killed in the deadly pipeline explosion. >> for jessica morales.

[bell ringing] >> and for elizabeth torrez. >> [bell ringing] >> thank you. >> remembering the eight people who were killed exactly one year ago. that explosion happened at 60:91 year ago today and now they are remembering the people who were killed. it's also important to remember that a number were seriously injured. 30 homes, more than 30 homes destroyed and a neighborhood completely changed forever because of what happened there. a day after more than a dozen b.a.r.t. protesters were arrested, some people say they will plan to

continue their demonstrations. yesterday was the sixth of the demonstrations. as you saw live right here on our air. b.a.r.t. police closed the station for more than two hours and 24 people were arrested and then released. b.a.r.t. riders tell us they are frustrated. >> there's got to be a better way than that. that doesn'tsoever anything and it only makes things more difficult for commuters -- that doesn't solve anything and it only makes things more difficult for commuters. >> a protest is scheduled to make place in civic center plaza in san francisco. hours after that protest, vandals damaged glen park station in the city. and officials say it was connected to that earlier protest. up to a dozen men dressed in black hoodies used hammers to smash ticket vending machines. they also spray painted the name charles hill on the ground. he's the homeless man shot by b.a.r.t. police after they say he threatened them with a gun. midnight is the deadline for california lawmakers to

pass hundreds of last minute bills for the year. democrats and republicans both say they want to spur job growth. they're efforts have been mixed with the clock ticking. ken wayne has the story. >> reporter: they were here till 11:00 last night and it may be another long night for lawmakers. job bills are getting attention. some have passed, some have failed and some remain stalled. >> blakely, no. >> reporter: voting a frequent sound on the senate floor with about 200 bills to be tackled over two days. lawmakers do something, anything to [audio difficulty ] >> one bill cuts up to three years of legal red tape off any major green construction project. a bill celebrated by many on both sides. >> now we're going to give our

regents of california the opportunity to get started sooner rather than later with putting people back to work. >> reporter: yesterday governor brown announced a jobs plan that would adjust taxes to allow companies to do business in california. >> i don't think it'll pass today. i think it need some work. >> reporter: duhton wants lawmakers to come back next week to work on tax reform. he called the governor's plan a rush job. >> like i told the governor, i don't have any intentions to recommend to my caucus that they vote for something they haven't even read. >> reporter: many other bills are on the governor's desk such as one that delays amazon.com from collecting taxes for a

things are far from normal tonight in washington, d.c. and new york where heavy security is now in place on world of a potential car bomb attack. >> [audio difficulties ] >> the washington post today that the threat is from information gathered by the cia. defense secretary leon panetta

acknowledged the threat today at the pentagon. >> violent extremism remains a deadly threat. we are dealing with their threats as we speak. >> reporter: the white house says president obama is receiving frequent updates on the potential threat. ktvu's rob roth now looked at what kind of security we could expect to see in the bay area this weekend. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. says it's planning to launch police presence this weekend. officials say b.a.r.t. is in contact with the security administration and has teams trained and ready. >> we're doing more high visibility patrols. things our customers can see out there when they're riding the trains. additional police dogs doing sweeps. >> reporter: we've been told b.a.r.t. workers have been asked to make sure all underground access gates are secure. b.a.r.t. passengers we spoke to said they have no concerns about

riding the trains this weekend. no concerns about a terrorist attack. >> pick a day, any day, and i think if they were avoiding people being ready they wouldn't pick a predictable day. >> reporter: there will be more officers in the terminal but passengers shouldn't be experiencing security relatedty lays. >> for the most part they shouldn't see any changes at all. all the implementations we did was behind the scenes. >> reporter: in san francisco police have cancelled all vacations for this weekend. they'll be patrolling the civic center where ceremonies are scheduled. >> we will be monitoring everything, if we see any potential of a threat -- >> luxor cabs in san francisco are flying the american flag in remembrance of those lost on 9 /11. all 250 of their cabs will fly

roller coaster. the fire weather watch in efect effect for the bay area: a chance of lightning strikes but it's about a 20 or 30% chance. it's not a slam dunk. but just be forewarned. the reason it's a big deal obviously is because you don't want, we're in the height of fire season you don't want a fire strike. that's in effect till tomorrow around lunchtime. that has to do with the heat. not a lightning issue but a heat we're seeing in the marin area. through tomorrow low humidity as well. the fire weather watch, means a chance of dry lightning and that remains with us saturday morning. [audio difficulties] going to happen. really the big story is the lightning strikes. there's going to be some real fire issues here. calfire is all over this one. you bet their staffing up for the weekend.

so looks like they're going to be getting dry lightning. this low pressure center not supposed to be there. when it does it grabs some of that monsoonal moisture. and it pushes it farther north, we have a weekend morning show, mornings on two, mike mibach and claudine wong, they'll be talking about this. mark tamayo and rosemary orozco will be talking about this. we get into sunday, and you see a little more. so it's touch and go. it's not a slam dunk at all [audio difficulties ] timing this stuff out. your five day forecast with your weekend in view looks like this. the weather story then is a little cooler for the weekend

participates in the susan g. komen three day walk for the tour got off to an early start to raise money to cure cancer. the need remains great say organizers. >> some where in the world a woman dies from breast cancer every 69 seconds. and one woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes in the united states. >> each participate agreed to raise at least $3,300. today they put 20 miles on their walking shoes with another 40 to go walking through san francisco. the east bay and then over the

golden gate bridge into marin. two south bay power houses going head to head. >> our sports director mark ibanez now live on the field. hi mark. >> hey a lot of fun. one of the nicest venues in all of california to play a football game. but the biggest question i was getting when we were setting up for this game, who is palma high school? where are they? and frank said if they were in salinas. st.francis high is very familiar with them. they've actually played them four times in the last four years. this is developing into a bit of a rivalry. but last year not so great as far as the bottom line. a tie the first time you met them in the regular season. then the first round and you wound up on the short end of a another very good ball game 17- 10. >> you know we love the competition levels they bring

to us. they're very good. very comparable to a wba team. we just love playing great against competition. they came out victors last year. it's been a nice and forth between the two of us. >> aside from the obvious match up, you have to worry about your one loss record. you guys are 0-1. this is their first game but you guys had another tough loss in your opener last week. >> yeah we did. our kids competed hard. they fought through a will the of adversity. oak grove is a very good athletic football team. they did a great job. we made a few more mistakes. they were able to capitalize. at the end we knew we had the opportunity to come out on top and we just didn't cap capitalize and they were there. >> darell crooks, reminds people of wendell tyler, he sprained his ankle over the summer, how are you going to compensate. >> we have a lot of other players who are ready to fill the void.
