police searching for an armed robber. the unique disguise they say he was wearing. >> and an unusual lightning storm passes through the bay area sparking a series of fires. and new information about the people link to a possible terror plot planned for the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. grew good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. it's saturday, september 10th. let's check in with your weekend forecast with meteorologist rosemary roscoe. good morning, rosemary. that was quite a lightning storm we saw! >> you said it. but the conditions have actually improved overnight. let's start with the red flag warning over the north bay lasting until 11:00 this morning. those dry northerly winds have been gusting to 22 miles per hour, even 25 in some cases in the overnight hours. and they're expected to continue through late morning. humidity this morning is low as well, especially for first

start of the day. meanwhile, over the east and south bay, through the weekend we are expecting that possibility of thunderstorms. dry lightning sparking even some fires last night. but the atmosphere has become more saturated and from this point on we are expecting any thunderstorms to actually be attached with some moisture and some scattered showers, and that will lessen the fire threat over the east and south bay. but that thunderstorm risk will remain for the weekend, through the range and east bay hills, santa clara and monterey counties. talk more about this and what you can expect outside your door this morning, and the weekend, coming up. that began as a hostage situation finally came to an end. alex savage is live with the latest. alex. >> reporter: good morning to you, mike. armed men burst into the office depot store behind us, just around closing time last night, demanding money. and according to police, they were told by witnesses the man was wearing one of these guys fox masks from the movie v for

vendetta. he was taken into custody inside the store after this long standoff that lasted more than six hours. during that time, snipers took up positions around the store. we were also a s.w.a.t. officers on the roof of the business as well it started around 9:30 last night with a call about a robbery in progress at this store near 40th and hollis in oakland. just on the border right next to emeryville. but officers got here, they could see it a man with a gun inside the place, several employees came running out of the building and for a short time police were worried the accused gunman was holding hostages but as it turned out, he was the only one inside the business when it was all said and done. but he wasn't giving up easily. after using a loud speaker, police tried to urge the man to surrender. the s.w.a.t. team went in and found him hiding out and brought an end to this overnightstandoff. >> bottom line is, resolved peacefully. there was no significant injuries to any innocent victims or to the suspect himself. so the situation resolved

peacefully and we're all going home. and you can't ask for anything better than that. >> after he was brought out of the store he was treated for minor injuries to his hands and was taken to a hospital to get checked out. police say they did have to use tear gas to get the man to give himself up inside this office depot store. as you can see behind us, as we come back out here live, oakland police officers still out here doing an investigation this morning. we're told that they are still searching for the handgun that was used in the robbery last night or the attempted robbery i should say, and police as well. also searching this office depot store, trying to find the mask. they believe this accused armed robber was wearing when he burst into the store last night and triggered this six-hour standoff here in oakland. fires on mount diablo sparked by lightning are now

contained. that's one of the fires burning near leon drive. the other two fires were on northgate and morgan territories al regional park become 42 acres burned. all three fires started around 8 last night, when lightning hit. lightning hit all over the bay last night. this is near dublin. the storm also brought thunder, rain and hail to parts of the east bay. that unusual weather began around 8 and lasted for about two hours. at least two bay area high school football games were disrupted bit weather in. lafayette it was the game at skyline. the you can hear the fans. so the fans and players had to leave the field. some took cover in the gym. play resumed an hour later. in mountainview, our sports crew was covering the game when the lightning started. we shot this video about 5,000 fans were evacuated from those stands. this did happen at half time but the game did resume a short

time later. tomorrow marks the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. many observances are about start today. one is starting in shanksville, pennsylvania where flight 93 crashed. today vice president joe biden and former presidents george w. bush and bill clinton. families of victims have been gathering at the memorial. the first phase of a permanent memorial will be dedicated today. president obama will visit all three 9/11 sites tomorrow. and inn his weekly address he he is the attacks proved the resilience of the american people. >> in their name, we will never waver. we will protect the country we love and pass safer, stronger and more prosperous to the next generation. >> the president says the united states has strengthened its partnership with allies

the c.i.a. received a tip from a long term source in the afghanistan region who has been reliable in the past. authorities think the attackers had a goal to set. a car bomb or come up with other ways to create chaos. >> another target is the capitol. police out in full force throughout the washington, d.c. area this weekend. officers have a vast camera network and are checking bridges, tunnels, if abandoned cars. here in the by area people may notice an increase in law enforcement. bart will have extra security at train stations and parking lots through monday. although there is no specific threat, the federal transportation security administration has asked for increased patrols around bart as part of operation rail safe, a national security operation including more than 140 agencies from 32 states and several canadian cities. stay with ktvu for coverage tomorrow, on september 11th. our coverage will begin at 5 a.m., and it will continue throughout the day. with our special 9/11, a decade

58 san francisco. mid-60s san jose. our temperatures are up over what we saw yesterday morning. so to recap quickly, it looks like the valley as well as the sierra definitely going to have their hands full. red flag warning continuing there. north bay hills through 11:00 this morning, we do continue with dry gusty winds as well as low humidity for the morning hours. talking about that low once again, that's where we're going to see the stream of moisture move through. partly cloudy skies expected for us through the weekend. a gradual cooldown. today maybe not to much but by tomorrow a notable cooldown. chance of thunderstorms remain with us, a couple rounds moving through in the afternoon. i want to show you the next 24 to 48 hours. by the afternoon we're doling with the cloudy skies, but most of that moisture up over the sierra, even the south sierra. tomorrow morning we wake up with the clouds and by the afternoon, it looks like perhaps inland east bay areas as well as the diablo range and monterey county the

down from capitol expressway to the 286-80 interchange, wrapping up by 7 tomorrow. but there will be another rounds of closures from midnight tomorrow to 5 a.m. on monday. and let's give you another live look outside. that's the longest bridge in the bay area, the san mateo bridge. traffic moving smoothly there in both directions this saturday morning. bicyclists getting back their sidewalk on the golden gate bridge today. the bridge district reopened the western sidewalk to bike traffic this morning. two weeks earlier than expected. since may, retrofit work has forced bicyclists to share the eastern sidewalk with pedestrians and another change is coming. beginning on monday, bridge work will close a section of the eastern sidewalk, but pedestrians will not be able to cross the bridge end-to-end, until mid-january. it was a long night for lawmakers on capitol hill. the votes that came down overnight about a pill that said so create more jobs.

the opportunity to get started sooner rather than later, was putting people back to work. >> like the told the governor, i don't have any intentions of recommend to go my caucus that they vote for something that they haven't even read. >> lawmakers did approve bills, including one that helps the 49ers build a new stadium in santa clara. the legislation speeds up environmental reviews of major construction projects. another bill headed to the governor gives childs care providers who receive state funding the right to unionize. lawmakers also reached a compromise with online retailers such as amazon.com. it gives online retailers before the state starts collecting state sales taxes. the company will use the time to lobby congress for national rules on governing online sales taxes. the state and senate and assembly also passed a bill to let local governments run state parks. it would allow cities or counties to take over operation of state parks that could close due to budget cuts. a similar bill by jerod huffman has also been sent to the

governor, and that bill would allow non-profit groups to run the parks. on monday, we may learn more details about the estimated 40,000 bank of america jobs being cut nationwide. details of the cutbacks are expected to be discussed by the chief executive. but some information has already been disclose. the layoffs will come mainly from the consumer banking operations, which is going to back branches, loan centers and other offices in california. california has the highest amount of bank of america branches in the country, and analysts say most of the layoffs will happen here further crippling the economy. president obama is now signed a federal disaster declaration for the state of texas. >> we need housing assistance. >> the president says the declaration will provide federal funding to the hundreds of people whose homes have been destroyed. the fire now called the largest in state history is still not 100% contained and has

destroyed or damaged 1400 homes. many evacuees are eager to get back into their neighborhoods and see what remains of their house. >> i can't get in. i had neighbors that snuck in and there are looters through the whole neighborhood. >> the fire is just one of at least 200 burning across the state. in total, about 1700 homes have burned down and four people have been killed. crews say the flames are being fueled by dry brush, a result of the worst drought in texas since the 1950s. and forecasters say the dry weather is likely to continue. calmer winds are now allowing firefighters in oregon to gain ground on a wildfire burning since august 27th. yesterday the governor took an aerial view of the dollar lake fire burning on mount hood. so far, the fire has burned more than 4600 acres. crews say lightning sparked that fire, and now the biggest concern is protecting the bull run watershed from the flames. it provides water to nearly a million people in portland.

lightning caused a fire to break out at a palm tree farm in chandler, arizona. the fire started last night when severe weather was spotted in the area. firefighters say multiple trees caught fire but no structures were damaged. they were able to quickly put out the fire and are working to clean up the debris. nato announced this morning one of its service members has died after an insurgent attack in the country yesterday. four others were killed earlier in other attacksage the country. so far 12 troops have been killed this month alone and so far 400 nato troops have died in the country. rebel fighters in india pour into the city, trying to capture the city away from supporters loyal to moammar gaddafi. it's one of his last remaining strong holds. rebel forces set today as the deadline for gaddafi loyalists to surrender. gaddafi has not been seen in public for several months and is considered a fugitive in the

country. a review of the people named in the latest wikileaks release shows no immediate danger. recently wikileaks released more than 250,000 memos, which showed the names of people who have provided information to american diplomats all over the world. an associated press review of those people found they were either comfortable with it or surprised their name was so highly valued. u.s. officials say some people have been relocated to ensure their safety. despite the review, they insist wikileaks is putting lives in danger. authorities are searching for 14,000 rounds of ammunition taken from fort bragg in north carolina. the ammunition was discovered missing on wednesday, in about 3500 people were put on lockdown during the initial investigation. lockdown was lifted after the ammunition was not found. the missing ammunition can be used in the m4 and m-16 assault rifles. congressional leaders have struck a deal averting a

new this morning, nasa is headed back to the noon. just about two hours ago, the station agency launched its grail a and b spacecraft from cape canaveral, florida. the twin spacecraft are set to arrive at the moon later this year where they'll orbit and measure the gravitational field. it was delayed twice because of bad weather. we know what a massive blackout that left people from orange county to mexico in the dark. an arizona power supply worker was working on a passer near yuma. this is a device that keeps the voltage up. he caused a short circuit and it went onlife. while thousands were left without power, city officials say the situation could have gotten a lot worse. >> signs of community were everywhere. san diegans did a magnificent job of turning what could have

been a disaster into something they all handled very well. >> a federal investigation is now being launched to determine how one short circuit could cause such a massive outage. while most of the power has been restored, people are being asked to monitor their air- conditioning and avoid using more power than usual over the weekend. on top of the blackouts, san diego residents are also dealing with a large sewage spill off the coast. there are beaches near scripps pier and del mar are shut town for the next few days. numerous contamination tests are underway, nearly 2 million tons of raw sewage was dumped into the lagoons off the coast. a advisory warning people to stay out of the water at monterey beach has been lifted. it was posted wednesday after water tests found high levels of bacteria. but since then, follow-up tests have determined bacteria levels have dropped to safe levels. potential sources of excess bacteria include marine life and human activity. check in with meteorologist

rosemary roscoe. is lightning still in the forecast. >> we do have the possibility of thunderstorms but the improvements are there. we are now a little more moist, our atmosphere, and that means those thunderstorms will come along with the scattered showers and dry lightning. that's important for fire danger, dry lightning, not a big possibility. low cloud deck there, marine layer about a thousand feet. shallower than yesterday, and many of us bus of that system bringing in the possibility of thunderstorms mixing out that marine layer, waking up with mostly clear skies. so question to have clouds on the coastline. we've got dense fog there as well. low 50s to low 60s at this hour. that storm risk will be with us. most of us not even going to see it or experience it. we're talking 20%. it is that chance there. there is that chance i should say, but most of us not likely to see it. low 60s along the coastline, expected for today. and into the afternoon. meanwhile, our inland areas will be seeing upper 70s for the lunchtime. upper 80s and low 90s for the

a hostage situation involving an armed man in costume an an east bay store comes to an end, just hours ago. and good morning, everyone. welcome back to mornings on 2. it started when an employee at the office depot says armed man rushed into the store and started making demands. ktvu's alex savage joins us live with more on how it all

ended. alex. >> reporter: it did come to a peacefulnd a few hours ago, around 4:00 in morning, when the armed robber was found hiding out inside the office depot store. he was in a bit of a tight spot, up in an attic area is where police found him. and this standoff lasted a long time last night. more than six hours to get him out. >> come out with your hands up! >> cutting a hole mountainside of the building to make their way inside, snipeers were also positioned around the store. this is all took place along the oakland emeryville border in this shopping center here. police say the armed men inside tried to rob the store around closing time last night. he held several employees at gunpoint for a short time. but officers got here, they surrounded the building and they watched as all those employees ran out of the store and they all made it out safely. the s.w.a.t. team tried to negotiate with this than and get him to give

himself up. but that didn't work so they moved in. >> we made several attempts as we do a normal course of business in situations like this, to get people to come out. we want to -- resolve situations peacefully and avoid going in and putting officers at risk. so we made several attempts through a pa system, phone calls into the business, see if he would answer the phone. so attempts were made to get him to come out. >> the man was found hiding out in some kind of crawl space right above the manager's office. at this office depot store. police have to use teargas to get him to give himself up. the man was treated for some minor injuries to his hands and was taken to a hospital to get checked out. police say the accused robber in this case as we come back out here live, was actually wearing one of these guy fox masks from the v for vendetta movies. we've seen these during recent protests at bart stations around the bay area. according to witnesses, the man with the gun was wearing one of these masks when he burst

inside this store. police have not yet found the mask but they say they will be locking through the store to find the mask and handgun used in the crime last night. alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. the city of san bruno held a public remembrance ceremony last night on the anniversary of the pipeline explosion. [bells tolling] >> mourners mourners rang a fire bell and read the names of the people killed that night. it was attended by 300 people, and ended with the release of doves. >> it's been a touch year, and this just -- brings back a lot of pain. >> we brought another property in the peninsula. we're not going back. we sold the property -- we're moving forward. >> and while some survivors

have moved out of the neighborhood, others plan to rebuild their homes. a permanent memorial is expected to be built to honor those who died. the emotion at another observance consisted of anger towards pg&e. a few dozen people protested outside the utilities headquarters in san francisco. the group wants criminal charges filed against the company's top executives. the demonstrators are demanding pg&e reveal the locations of all gas pipelines. it's estimated that there are 150,000 miles of untested pipeline in the united states. >> my concern is these exact same pipes will all over the state. so we're all sitting around waiting for repeat of what happened. >> in response, pg&e issued say statement taking the utility is committed to making the necessary changes to operate its pipeline safely. pg&e has also issued a list of steps it's taken to improve safety. new york plans a special ceremony marking the 10th

anniversary of the terrorist attacks. the names of the nearly 3,000 victims will be read. julie is live at ground zero and morning. what are some of the concerns this morning? >> reporter: there's sort of a black cloud that is hanging over new york city this weekend, with this credible threat that we've been informed of due to a source located in pakistan, a credible source. officials are calling the threat credible, but unconfirmed. it sounded confusing. what they're saying is that they have a credible source that has provided them with credible information in the past. they sewed on wednesday, some sort of attack that could potentially involved three individuals, one or two of them u.s. citizens, has been brought into the united states, sent by the head of al-qaeda, and they were to plot an attack in the near city area and in washington, d.c., targeting

either bridges or tunnels via a truck or a car bomb. and that's all the information we have. they have been unable to confirm that, so they have that one reliable source but it's just coming from one person. so while that source is reliable, they're basically saying look, there's nothing to worry about. there's nothing to panic about. new yorkers should go on where this daily lives. new york city mayor bloomberg in fact held a news conference this week urging reporters that if you see something, say something that's been the motto here, but with the 10-year mark happening tomorrow, new york city authorities, homeland security, are being extra vigilant. the entire city will be experiencing many street closures, hundreds of extra police officers in detail here on the streets of manhattan. and from my standpoint as a new yorker, i can say that it certainly does feel like any other day, just a lot more security. tomorrow will be a lot tighter with a lot more police presence as well.

bomb-sniffing dogs, the -- nypd counter-terrorism bureau is located here in downtown manhattan. they have thousands of cameras located throughout the city. they have radar, they have these -- detection pieces of equipment essentially that if there were any kind biological threat in the air that, would be censored to this downtown bureau, where these scanners are certainly keeping our eyes on new york city. so new york city is doing all it can to make sure this is safe. peter king should people be worried about tomorrow? he said no, people should go on. come down to gonzalez if they feel to pay tribute to the lives lost 10 years ago. back to you. >> thank you. menlo park fire chief was among the first responders helping at ground zero after 9/11. coming up at 7:45, we're going to talk to him live with his memories and why he will not be in new york this weekend. as new york and washington,

d.c. authorities secure their cities from terrorist threats, los angeles is also on heightened alert. law enforcement in southern california say there is no credible threat for that area, but security has been increased this weekend. there are bomb-sniffing cogs and deputies armed with rifles and bare kids. security has also been beefed up at the metro lines, docks and the airports. >> we cannot be everywhere. the public has a responsibility, and we ask that the public, if you see something, say something. >> the los angeles police chief has encouraged residents to be vigilant this weekend and not to hesitate to report any suspicious activity. chicago is also stepping up police presence there. authorities have brought in bomb-sniffing dogs there at union station and while there's no specific threat to the chicago area, police say they cannot afford to take any chances. just one day before the 10th anniversary of 9/11, the pope is calling for no violence to be committed in the name of god. the pope isn't a letter to the

archbishop of new york and in it he wrote that he will be praying for the innocent victims of the attack. he also hopes their families will be able to find peace. the pope says the events of 9/11 were made worse by the attackers' claims they were acting in the name of god. he says no circumstances can justify terrorism. a san leandro student arrested after found on campus with a loaded hands gunn. police say the student became agitated when she was asked to turn over his cell phone. campus security searched him after noticing he was wearing what looked to be a possibly a knife clip. they found the gun and a small amount of what appeared also to be marijuana. police say the student was taken to the alameda county juvenile hall. today a funeral is being held for a councilman jerry mello who was shot and killed after discovering a marijuana growing operation. the suspect is considered arm

good morning! a live lock. low clouds in the foreground. a little coastal cloud cover along the coast this morning. college students in north carolina are remembering 9/11 by creating a human tribute to the twin towers and the pentagon. thousands of students participate in the event to honor their local first responders and people who served on september 11th. each student held a name of someone who died in the attacks. most of the students say while they were young children on 9/11, they do remember the event vividly. they say they had want to honor the people who stepped forward to help on that tragic day. as the country remembers the victims of september 11th, we are also remembering the heroic efforts by so many who respond thad day and in the days that followed. fire chief harold joins us from live to talk about the efforts

and the anniversary. >> good morning. >> i know were you disappointed that you and team couldn't be at ground zero, space restrictions and things like that. you still wishing were you there this weekend? >> part of me wishes i was there, and then i have other things that i've been involved with here locally. i was at the san bruno memorial last night, and i've been busy with other local events and people invited myself and other members of our teams to their events to pay tribute this weekend. so overall, it's worked out. but yeah, it would have been nice to have gone back it. wasn't in the cards. >> chief, can you describe for us your first moments there at ground zero, when -- if you could take a step back and talk about your emotions at that time, and if there's one or two memories that will forever be in your mind? >> sure. the first real look for me of ground zero is coming over one of the bridges in new york. it was about 2:00 in the morning, you could see the

site, silhouette of the site in the lights they had set up, and you could see the smoke and the haze from the dust and de browser the site. and received a phone call and it asked us to come into the convention center midtown manhattan, and where they informed us that basically there was a fear there would be additional attacks on the responders at ground zero, and we would have a special mission for the first several days to develop a duplicate capability for the rescue capability we know that was destroyed during the event. so the city was very vulnerable after 9/11. all the responders that were alive were at the site, and all their equipment at least a majority was destroyed at least for technical rescue equipment some we duplicated that. and similar to the oklahoma city bombing, you've got to shove the human emotions of anger and so forth from seeing what you're seeing, push those down and we get paid to go on there and be professionals and raise the bar on operational

capability. we need to somewhat be separate because there's a huge effect for the local responders and local population. we need to go to work and make sure everybody comes home as best as we can, the same way they left. that's tough, but fortunately we did -- we were able to bring everybody home at times, imagining obviously what happened that day. it was little bit scary to look at the site. i say to myself, i hope we don't kill anybody here. that is one of my first thoughts, once you get past the enormity of it. >> chief, as we look at the pictures, they never really get easier to look at. but i know when you're there and they talk about all the health effects and breathing in the debris and -- what are the lasting effects? are there people still suffering any health effects and is it -- the emotional toll that it took on people? >> well, there are. and i think there are people throughout the country on these rescue teams. there are people obviously in new york city because their time on task was for a longer

period of time. it's proven now that there are issues. respiratory issues, there are people that have had the long- term cough and other ailments associated with this. when we came back, 70% of team members were ill in one form or another, skin rashes, pneumonia, upper respiratory infections, and for some it's persisted over the years. psychological effects, we don't spend a lot of time talking about it. it's left each person to say whether they have issues or not. but it takes awhile to get through these things and put it in perspective. for those of us in oklahoma for the bombing, we had maybe a little more realistic perspective of what we would do. both oklahoma city and 9/11, essentially the live rescue operations were over within 12 hours after the incident from. there on out, it was human recovery. >> chief, always a pleasure. thank you for coming in. thank you for what you did back

sexual battery officers had to be called in. alex is live to tell us how he was finally captured. alex. >> reporter: i can tell you how this started. it started with the man bursting into this office depot store just around closing time last night, with a gun, looking for money. but he ended up locked in a long standoff with police that lasted throughout the night. and according to the police officer we talked with this morning, the man was wearing a disguise, and according to police and the witnesses, it was one of these guy fox masks from the movie, the same kind of mask we've seen in many bart protests. but when the standoff did end just a few hours ago inside the office depot store, the man was brought out by officers and he was not wearing that mask. >> come out with your hands up! >> he was found in a crawl space in the store. police had to use teargas to get him to give himself up.

he was treated for some minor injuries to his hands. then was taken to the hospital. police say he tried to rob this store around 9:30 last night on the border between oakland and emeryville. he held several employee at been point but let them go, and this morning police talked about the disguise they believe he was wearing. >> he came in and it was described as a v for vendetta mask. not seen the movie myself, but that's what the witnesses provided. when we did catch them, was he still with that mask or not? i'm not sure. >> the standoff lasted a total of six hours last night. when officers first got here, they surrounded this building and watched a number of employees ran out of the place. they all made it out safely when it was all said and done. the s.w.a.t. team then tried to negotiate with this man for a long time, get him to give himself up.

but that didn't work. and that's when the s.w.a.t. officers made their way inside and they found this man hiding out in that crawl space. police say there were no customers inside the office depot store when this standoff got started last night, only a handful of employees who according to a manager i talked with off camera a short time ago, are all very shaken up this morning after what happened. alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. a lightning storm lit up the sky over the east bay. this is video from last night in dublin, where our cameras got several lightning strikes lighting up the sky. the storm also brought thunder, rain and even some hail to parts of the east bay. the unusual weather began around 8 p.m. and lasted for about two hours. meteorologist rosemary roscoe is live in the weather center with our first look at the forecast and when we can expect similar lightning today. >> good morning to you. the thunderstorm chance will continue, but we do have changes and we've seen them in the last several hours.

our atmosphere moister than last night. and the thunderstorms today should be accompanied by scattered showers. that system will hang right off the coast of point concepcion through the weekend. you can see it san luis obispo seeing scattered showers this morning. we're dry, and the possibility of thunderstorms will come in the afternoon. but because we're expecting scattered showers and the dry lightning aspect not necessarily a threat any longer, the only area still with the red flag warning at this time will be the north bay hills above 1500 feet, lasting until 11:00, and this area primarily for the dry northerly winds that continue to gust this morning and relative humidity is very low as well. so that expiring later today. but yes, the possibility of thunderstorms still in the forecast. we'll take a closer look at that and show what you you can expect for temperatures, coming up. three fires on mount diablo sparked by lightning are now contained. show you video, a fire burning near leon drive and two others

at northgate. in total, about 42 acres burned. firefighters say all three fires started around 8 last night when the dry grass was hitly lightning. two bay area high school football games were disrupted by that weather. in lafayette, the game was suspended and fans and players had to leave the field. some took cover in the gym. and play resumed about an hour later. and in mountainview, we were covering a football game when lightning started there. about 5,000 fans were evacuated. this happened at half time. that game resumed as well. right now a red flag warning is in effect for parts of mount tamm. the warning means the conditions are perfect for wildfires. mount tamm is closed to traffic at sky oaks watershed outside

online video address. >> in their memory, in their name, we will never wave. we will protect the country we love and pass it safer, stronger and more prosperous to the next generation. >> the president says the united states has strengthened its partnership with allies, reformed intelligence, and invested in special forces. he adds during the past two years, more senior al-qaeda leaders such as osama bin laden have been eliminated than at any time since 9/11. the president will visit all three 9/11 sites tomorrow. security has been tightened in new york city on the eve of the 9/11 anniversary. government officials believe at least two of the men suspected in the potential al-qaeda attack are u.s. citizens, or carry u.s. travel documents. the c.i.a. involved a tip from a long-term source in the afghanistan- pakistan region who has been reliable in the past. authorities think the attackers primary goal is it set. a car bomb or come up with other ways to create chaos.

good morning to you! a little bit of a coastal fog along the coast this morning, even some dense fog. the rest of us dealing with mostly sunny skies. three, two, one -- zero, and liftoff of the delta 2 with grail. journey to the center of the moon! >> nasa headed back to the moon. just about two hours ago, the space agency launched its grail a and b sprays craft from cape canaveral, florida. the twin spacecraft are set to arrive at the moon later this year, where they'll orbit and measure the moon's gravitational field. the launch was denied twice because of bad weather. also new this morning, nato announced one of its service members has died after an insurgent attack in afghanistan. it happened yesterday in the southern part of the country. four others were killed earlier in the day in afghanistan.

temperatures up a few degrees over yesterday. and it's a mild start to the day. for the afternoon, that risk for thunderstorms will remain over the area. but as we've been talking about this morning, we have seen our weather improve at least in that category. scattered showers should accompany those thunderstorms. temperatures up by noontime, low 60s to low 70s around the bay area. upper 70s for our inland areas. and then for the afternoon, a lot like yesterday, upper 70s, low 80s for the north bay. red flag warning through 11:00 this morning. meanwhile, head to the east inland, we've got 87 in concord, 89 livermore, 73 hayward. south 79 san jose, 65 degrees expected in the city for the afternoon. extended forecast here, temperatures will fall tomorrow, and we're looking at 5 degrees cooler for inland areas so notable and the thunderstorms will remain at least that possibility through monday, tuesday, wednesday. temperatures back up into the mid it upper 80s. 60s for the coast. back to you.

how all of this unfolded. >> reporter: a new wrinkle in this investigation we just learned about some oakland police. they are telling us we initially learned this morning they arrested this man who they say robbed this office depot earlier this morning and triggered this long standoff. but we have just found out that an employee of this office depot store has also been arrested as well because police say that employee helped the other man gain access to the store, in his efforts to try to commit this robbery. in any case, you can see the home depot store right now is still shut down. the place is not open. detectives are still inside gathering evidence in this investigation. and the good news is no one was hurt in this long standoff that lasting more than six hours overnight. >> come out with your hands up! >> police brought in the s.w.a.t. team with snipers staged around the building. this all played out at the office depot near 40th street

and hollis in oakland, along the border with emeryville. police initially thought there may have been hostages but accounted for all the employees and realized the gunman was in there by himself. officers used a loudspeaker trying to negotiate with this man, but he refused to come out. finally the s.w.a.t. team moved in and tracked him down. he was hiding out in some kind of crawl space in the store. police had to use teargas to get him to give up bur they're glad things ended the way they did. >> bottom line is resolved peacefully. there was no significant injuries to any innocent victims or to the suspect himself. so the situation resolved peacefully and we're all going home on and you can't ask for anything better than that. >> when officers first got here, they surrounded the building and watched a number of employees running out of the store. all of them eventually made it out safely. the s.w.a.t. team negotiated with the man for some time and another interesting detail in all of this is that police are telling

us according to all the witnesses who ran out of the store, the initial gunman, the man who ran into the store, was wearing a disguise and according to the witnesses, he was wearing one of these masks from the movie v for vendetta, same mask from bart protests across the bay area. one man in custody accused of attempting to commit an armed robbery at this office depot store. another person arrested, an employee of this office depot store, arrested for assisting that man in trying to rob the place. we'll sort this out and we'll have more information on later newscasts today. alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. the city of san bruno held a public remembrance ceremony last night on the first anniversary of the pipe loin explosion. >> they read the names of 8 people killed that night.

agitated when he was asked to turn over a cell phone. campus security officers searched him, after noticing he was wearing what looked to appear to be a knife clip. they found the gun in a small amount of marijuana. police say the student was taken to the alameda county juvenile hall. today a funeral will be held for councilman jerry mello. last week he was shot and killed after discovering an illegal marijuana operation in the forest near fort bragg. the gunman is aaron bassler. he should be considered armed and dangerous. the funeral is held at fort bragg high school football stadium. right now the woman accused of murdering nursing student michelle le is sitting in the jail and police say she's being kept in seclusion because of the attention the case has received. yesterday 27-year-old gisele esteban made her first court appearance. she's accused of murdering le. police have still not recovered le's body. her family says it is organizing a search for next

him a few times he is urging billy to come home or anyone with information to come forward. a high school football player in mississippi is dead after collapsing on the field during a game last night. latrell dunbar collapsed while returning to the huddle during a play. paramedics immediately responded and rushed him off the field. players temporarily paused their game, but voted to continue on with the play. dunbar's team went on to win the game and then afterwards players were told their teammate had died. the cause of death is now under investigation. two firefighters were hurt battling a blaze at a california home reportedly owned by actor jack nicholson. the movie star has not lived there in years, though. the assistant fire chief says there was a person at the house in the hollywood hills when the fire brock out yesterday. but it was not nicholson. fire crews were able to bring the blaze under control and the firefighters that were injured are receiving medical

that red flag warning forth north bay hills until 11:00. critics of president obama say the administration should have foreseen problems with the fremont solar company solyndra. fbi agents raided the headquarters thursday morning. they received a $535 million loan from the federal government, the first in tens of billions of dollars in loans to green companies. president obama had touted solyndra as a company of the present and future. republicans wonder if taxpayer money was misspent. >> because of so much concern about where the money went, how it's spent and is there fraud and abuse? >> the founder and other executives of solyndra contributed and raised money for president obama, including visiting him at the white house. some former solyndra workers are supporting the company, they tell the chronicle they believe solyndra's use of the half billion dollar government loan was above board. one engineer says solyndra was a legitimate solar company about believes the criminal

hovering over the golden gate. traffic though looking good in both directions of 101 there. all lanes on highway 101 in san jose are back hope now after overnight construction. that is part a big project to replace a 50-year-old interchange near tully road. there will be more closures starting at midnight tonight. all lanes at 101 will be shut down from capitol expressway to the 280 interchange. the work will wrap. by 7 a.m. tomorrow, but there will be another round of closures from midnight tomorrow to 5 a.m. monday. bicyclists are getting back their sidewalk on the golden gate bridge today. the bridge district reopened the western sidewalk to bike traffic this morning. two weeks earlier than expected. since may, retrofit work has forced bicyclists to share the eastern sidewalk with pedestrians and another change is coming. beginning on monday, bridge work will close a section of that eastern sidewalk and pedestrians will not be able to cross the bridge end-to-end,
